Change is a beautiful thing!
At times we don't want to embrace change cause it can be scary, it can be disruptive, but at the same time its is necessary! Change is a constant!

I for one am looking forward to change and all the GREAT things the Spring has to offer! It's going to be AMAZING for Harriet's, a gang of other folks and YOU to! Mark my words!

Speaking of change we have just re-launched our website. And we are re-structuring our boutique, watch the changes as the unfold!

I'm sure you're familiar with the saying "One's man's trash is another man's treasure", perhaps more so now than ever.

Welcome the era of eco-chic! No longer do you have to be ashamed to be a pack rat. If you walk the streets and can't resist picking up discarded nick nacks, stand up. If you stalk flea markets, garage/stoop sales and church bazaars be proud. Its now cool to say I collect garbage! In fact its quite fashionalbe!

Its really amazing the things one can do with "garbage." One artist in particular is doing some really interesting things with found objects aka "trash". Kmcann founder and curator of F.O.A.M (Found Objects Art Museum) is making folks re-evaluate what they consider garbage.

At Harriet's we also have an affinity for things some might consider throwaways. We take all the little left over scraps of fabrics the average seamstress or tailor would discard and make lovely dresses, skirts, tops and bags.

Garbage Collector you say? I'LL BE THAT!

The Changing Landscape of Brooklyn

A metamorphosis can sometimes happen very quickly or sometimes it can be slow and gradual. But no matter how long the transformation takes for some reason it always seems like it happened overnight.

One need only take a leisurely walk through any give neighborhood to bear witness to the transformation of the borough. This weekend I and 20 of my peoples walked the streets of Downtown Brooklyn. Our excursion started on North Flatbush Avenue at Harriet's in Prospect Heights.

As we walked Flatbush Avenue towards Downtown, we noticed the strip of mostly Mom & Pop shops had several new additions including an American Apparel, a Dunkin Donuts and a Baskin Robins. We took notice of all the construction happening around the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the futrue location of the 24 hour BAM Cultural District.

We saw the properties being converted to condos and luxury apartments. We saw neighborhoods, streets and buildings in transition.

What's my take on all the changes? Well... It depends on who you are and what are your vested interests. But I think we can all agree "A Change Is A Coming." In fact, It's already here.

THE HARRIET CHRONICLES

When did you first fall in love with Hip Hop?

For me, I had encountered hip hop on several occasions, but it was not love at first sight. I remember hearing Run-Dmc's "Walk This Way" and thinking 'That's pretty cool', but the love affair really jumped off when I was 12. I was playing softball when a car drove buy blasting Rob Base's "It take Two". Once I heard that it was a wrap. It was official. I was a hip hop junkie!

Now let's bring it full circle to 2006!
Now a days its easy for me to forget how much I love hip hop and its even harder for me to feel the way I did but when I was 12. But every now and then, something takes me back to them days and the nostalgia takes over. Last week I picked up the 200th Issue of The Source. I have not read a Source mag in years. But Harriet's is featured in this months fashion spread (shameless plug), so I copped the issue on my way home. I read it on the train and quite frankly i was reminded why I started reading The Source in the early 90s and to be honest I felt the love.

So grab the 200th Issue of The Source or flip through it and Barnes and Noble. Its definitely worth a read, if nothing else check us out in the fashion spread "Back To The Future" (peep the fly-ass lace dress). And if you feel moved let me know. If your love affair with hip hop is in anyway re-kindled shout me out! And if you feel like grabbin' your shell toes, door-knockers, africa medallions, mcm jump suits and heading to the park or an old school jam hollah at me and I'm there!

Hip Hop It Started Out In The Park... we use to do it out in the dark!

THE REMIX: Fashion Collaborations

It seems as if collaborations between different fashion houses and labels are the way to go! Even mass market chain stores are getting on the band wagon. Who ever thought Luella Bartley and Target would join forces to put out a line of clothing. Everyone from Stella McCartney for Addidas to Boateng for Givenchy to Todd Oldham for Lazyboy is working on design projects with other companies.

THE ULTIMATE SIDE HUSTLE
The idea of collaborating is not new. It does not take a genius to know that you can get more done with two hands then one! Joining forces with another company allows one to share valuable resources, reach untapped markets and creates excitement! For independent designers collaborating with another label can be a great way to tap into new markets. It's all about working smarter not harder!

Brooklyn based artist, Kelvin McCann, classifies his creations as his love child. Since a youngster, hes been enamored with interior space. This fascination coupled with an unyielding compassion that prompts him to rescue orphaned furniture abandoned on sidewalks. With these two elements driving him to procreate, Kelvin has developed his art, his love child, into grand, futuristic furniture pieces consisting of obscure parts lying on the street.

A fascinating element is Kelvins father had been a furniture designer. Kelvin was thrilled to finally connect the dots, to discover the source of his creativity. Unfortunately, he never witnessed his fathers process or product. Kelvins dual mission as an artist now is to take over the family business that, really, never got started. He calls his collection Middlefinger Art, which reclaims the creative connection between a son and father artist and shuns the forces that separated the two talents in the beginning.

Monique Schubert asserts that the visual patterns that occur on wall paper, textile designs and throughout universe are metaphor for patterns of human behavior, thought or experience. Her works on reflective paper are inspired by those repeat patterns. This installation is based on a wallpaper format, stretching from ceiling to floor. Utilizing silkscreen printing and collage, the patterns seek to explore the notion of decadence. The idea is that those who choose to live decadently, their behaviors are based on patterns that balances out other elements in their lives. She views her life and an artist as a way to reconnect with the balance of nature which has been chipped away by the business of the world.
