• LMCC Grant Workshop at NoMAA – Wednesday, August 26, 7pm
  The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) is having an information session at NoMAA on two upcoming grant opportunities.  The Manhattan Community Arts Fund (MCAF) provides grants of up to $5,000 for arts projects by individual artists and small nonprofit organizations.  The Fund for Creative Communities (The Fund) provides grants of up to $5,000 to nonprofit organizations presenting arts projects that benefit Manhattan communities.  Deadline for both grants: Tuesday, September 22.  To RSVP for the information session, contact NoMAA: info@nomaanyc.org – for more information on the grants visit: www.lmcc.net/grants.
  
  
• Request for submissions: ¡Aquí! (Here) – An Uptown Latino Art Exhibition at the NoMAA Gallery – Deadline: Friday, August 28, 5pm
  NoMAA is calling for submissions from Latino Washington Heights/Inwood visual artists to participate in ¡Aqui!, the first group exhibition of this kind at NoMAA’s newly inaugurated gallery space in Washington Heights. ¡Aqui! will expose works by local artists depicting their creative experiences within our neighborhoods, as well as celebrate Latino arts and cultures uptown from September (Hispanic Heritage month), through December 2009. Fifteen artists will be selected by a panel of jurors to exhibit their works in this group show at the NoMAA gallery. ¡Aqui! will be curated by Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, Special Projects Coordinator at El Museo del Barrio. Culturarte is offering 20 complementary tickets to see the last performance of "Don't look at them" this Saturday August 8 before the shows leaves to Spain and Santo Domingo, DR. A slaughterhouse as a metaphor for confrontation, agony and death. “Don’t look at them” is something that no one likes to see, it is the meatmarket.

Historian James Renner will conduct a tour of the Audubon’s Park area describing the historical highlights, the original residents (the Audubon and Grinnell families) and the apartment buildings of present day Audubon Park. Also included on the tour will be a visit to the gravesite of John James Audubon at Trinity Cemetery on 155th Street.

Workshop / Taller: Art up your child’s summer
An urban planner (Susana Schaller) and a visual artist (Ingrid Menendez) have teamed up to bring your child into an art exploration journey every Thursday of August. Participating young artists will be engaged in a sequence of artistic explorations based on the theme of our community from a child’s point of view. The class will include techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking through creative and innovative processes. The schedule will be: Thursdays, 10:30am – 12pm (5-7 years old children) and 2pm – 3:30pm (8-10 years old children)

11. KEISHA wrapped up the evening with a blues, "Stormy Monday". Katie Cosco came in at this point and jumped in on piano. Keisha in great entertainer fashion stole around the room tapping each person on the shoulder and creating a scat dialogue wherein, through her scat phrases, she invited each person to scat an answer of a chorus or two. This was a true dialogue, and even the gentleman who had come in with Yasuko sang a chorus! Thanks to all. Thank you Keisha for this incredible conversation.

My new CD, Only Moment, was released two months ago and we have the honor of being featured on today’s show, the Wednesday, July 29 edition of Canadian broadcaster Ron Sweetman’s IN A MELLOW TONE.  The show is entitled REED MASTERS.  I’m in some incredible company.  You'll hear the clarinets of myself, Rozanne Levine, and Garvin Bushell, the soprano sax of Richard Hadlock, the alto saxes of Benny Carter, Red Holloway?and Phil Woods, and the tenor saxes of Stan Harrison, Jon Irabagon, Jason Robinson, Ben Webster and Frank Wess, with musical styles stretching from New Orleans to contemporary experimental.
