Had so much fun doing the show today!  I just got out of my chair and did a little dance after typing that.  Seriously, I just did that.  I'm going to do it again.....I just did a back flip!  Life is fun on email, you can say whatever you want.  I did have fun though.  Was feeling the flow.

1. The flight from Salt Lake City to Spokane.  Truly magic
2. Eating Fritos and beer for dinner the first night.  Suddenly I was 18 again.
3. Party boat.  Every year we end the trip by all getting on the boat with a lot of drinks (not the guy driving of course) and heading out.  Always fun.  This year we all got to see our buddy Darren get naked and jump off the boat.  Someone always seems to get naked.
4. Reading.  Seriously, sitting on the dock and reading is so good.  Then I read "A Short History of Everything"...I think that's the title.  It's pretty much how lucky we are to be alive on such a messed up planet and universe.  Live each day man.
5. The smell of 6 dudes in a cabin.  Even the screen porch stunk.

TV on The Radio's Tunde Adebimpe Appearing in Jonathan Demme Movie With Anne Hathaway

After all his lyrical musings on life and love, TV on the Radio lead singer Tunde Adebimpe will actually play someone's lover in the upcoming movie Rachel Getting Married [via One for the Good Days]. Adebimpe's character is named "Sidney," and from the looks of this trailer, he appears to be marrying the titular character, played by Rosemarie DeWitt.

Georgie James Break Up

August isn't exactly a transitional season, but this particular August seems to be fast turning into a time for bands to move on. On Friday we learned we'll soon lose first-rate firebrands Be Your Own Pet, and today comes the sad news that the members of DC indie-pop act Georgie James have decided to go their separate ways. But Georgie James, we hardly knew thee!

Band principals John Davis (ex-Q and Not U) and Laura Burhenn relayed the letdown in plain terms on their website [via The Washington Post's Going Out Gurus blog]:

After three years, Georgie James is calling it a day. We're proud of the album we made and everything else that we were able to do during our time together. We are both working on our respective solo projects...and hope to have albums out early next year. Thanks to everyone that helped our band over these past few years. And thanks to those who've listened to the music and come out to the shows. It is greatly appreciated. See you around soon.

Georgie James leave us with one Saddle Creek full-length, 2007's Places, and a couple scattered singles and EPs. Their spirit will live on in the aforementioned solo projects: Burhenn's singer/songwriter work, and Davis' new thing, Title Tracks. Davis hopes to record a Title Tracks album this fall and release it early next year, and he's already recruited a live band consisting of Merideth Munoz (Pash) and former Georgie James associates Michael Cotterman and Andrew Black.

Beck's own spastic youth is in the past, but he'll get to relive it vicariously through spaz king Jay Reatard's cover of "Gamma Ray" on the Modern Guilt track's forthcoming single. XL will release "Gamma Ray" in Europe on August 11 with Beck's original on the A-side and Jay Reatard's cover on the B-side.

Speaking of Jay Reatard and singles, don't forget that Jay's Matador Singles '08 comes out via Matador in the U.S. on October 7 (October 6 in the UK). His Singles 06-07, meanwhile, is available now via In the Red.

Both Jay and Beck have tour dates scheduled for the coming months. One of Jay's is tonight (August 4) in Dallas.

Stooges' Gear Stolen!

Well son of a gun. It seems some thieves in Montreal decided to run off with a rented truck on the morning of August 4, and that truck happened to be packed with a whole bunch of gear belonging to the Stooges. I mean, shit, I don't want the Stooges to make another Weirdness either, but c'mon dudes!

The truck was parked outside the Embassy Suites Hotel in Montreal, has Michigan plates with license number AC46493, and was nabbed between the hours of 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. The list of stolen goods is exhaustive. It includes, perhaps most tragically, Mike Watt's beloved "little bass", seen here:

 

"Man, you don't how I feel," Watt wrote in an email to Pitchfork. "I lost my little bass, how I loved her!"

He elaborated on the treaured instrument: "I had to modify it (especially the electronics) to let the 'Watt Sound' out...and I really got to dig it. It's got so much emotional value to me, I've done tons of gigs and recordings with it, and it just feels so right to work [with], like a part of me. I can work it without even thinking about it, like I can put my emotions right from my heart to its strings, you know?"

The Stooges played Montreal's Osheaga Festival the night before the theft. They have quite a few more dates planned through the rest of the summer and into fall, and those dates appear to be still on for now. Watt also has a trio of Warped Tour shows with the Missingmen.

Cotton Jones (ex-Page France) Sign to Suicide Squeeze

After dismantling his former band Page France and releasing multiple EPs with songwriting partner Whitney McGraw as the Cotton Jones Basket Ride, Michael Nau has signed to Suicide Squeeze to release the debut full-length from the new project. Nau and McGraw have shortened their name to Cotton Jones, and they'll release the album, Paranoid Cocoon, in early January.

Cotton Jones will tour this fall, but for now, their only date is an August 8 appearance at IOTA in Arlington, Virginia.

Drummers for Boredoms' 88 BoaDrum Revealed

It's gonna take a whole lotta drummers--88 of 'em on each coast!--to fully achieve the epic sonic assault the Boredoms are bringing in the form of 88BoaDrum. The bi-coastal, Nike Sportswear-sponsored event, which goes down August 8 at L.A.'s La Brea Tar Pits and the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn, recently unleashed an almost complete list of the 88 drummers who will make up either event. It, too, is quite a sight to behold.

So who's on board with this BoaDrum? Well, in L.A., there's Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse, Zach Hill of Hella, Man Man and Icy Demon Christopher Powell, Rob Barber of High Places, Mika Miko's Katelyn Hall, Sara Lund from Unwound, Patty Schemel from Hole, peeps from Oneida, Jawbreaker, We Are Scientists, Tussle, Pit Er Pat, Crystal Antlers, Erase Errata, and naturally, many, many others. That event's being overseen by the Boredoms and Hisham Bharoocha of Soft Circle, all of whom will take their spots behind the trapset under the ever-watchful Eye.

Brooklyn's affair-- coordinated by Gang Gang Dance-- gets both Panda Bear and Geologist of Animal Collective, Jaleel Bunton of TV on the Radio, Matt Sweeney of Chavez/Superwolf/Neil Diamond, members of Metric, Excepter, Parts and Labor, Spank Rock, Celebration, and like, way more other people than we could possibly pick out by name. The Brooklyn drummer list still has one drummer TBA. I can just see the message board chatter now: Where's the Spunt, man? Where's the freakin' Saunier?

The title of their debut album (Hold on Now, Youngster...) may have been a message of restraint, but Los Campesinos! are pursuing this whole "being a band" thing full bore. The Welsh septet will release their sophomore full-length-- We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed-- via Wichita on October 13 in the UK, mere months after Youngster hit stores. A North American release is scheduled for November via Arts&Crafts.

Los Campesinos! spoke about the suddenness of their second album's appearance in a post on their website and in their newsletter: "Despite Hold on Now, Youngster... being only five or so months old, we wanted to emphasize that this is no post-album cash-in.

"It's no B-Sides and rarities or 'songs that weren't good enough to be on the album cobbled together with some remixes and field recordings of Cardiff's indie scene'; it's 10 all-new tracks that none of you have ever heard before.

"Sure, we considered re-releasing a radio-edit of 'You! Me! Dancing!' and trying to get famous and scraping another tour out of that, but our parents unanimously agreed that if we did they would never speak to us again."

Los Campesinos! have an August full of festival shows, but a UK tour announcement is not far behind.

Be Your Own Pet Break Up

Be Your Own Pet have broken up, and they are barely even saying goodbye. In a message on their website, BYOP say, "To all of our fans, we are sad to bring you the news that our upcoming shows in the UK are going to be our last as a band. We thank you for all your love and support these past few years. It's been a blast, but the time has come for the four of us to go our separate ways."

The band gives no reason for the breakup, but perhaps the seeds of the split were responsible for them canceling their Warped Tour appearances.

Anyone who was fortunate enough to witness Be Your Own Pet live during their brief existence as a band knows what a bummer this breakup is. What sucks even more is that previously reported shows in Brooklyn and Norfolk, Virginia this month are off their schedule, which leaves a mere four British dates to serve as the band's farewell. Nonetheless, we have no doubt these shows will be as ripping as ever.

Be Your Own Pet, you will be missed.

BYOP guitarist Jonas Stein and drummer John Eatherly will continue to play together in Turbo Fruits. In fact, the Fruits have a pair of U.S. shows in August before heading over to the UK for the Be Your Own Pet dates.
