PRESS RELEASE
The Elbert County Office of Emergency Management would like to remind you that September is “National Preparedness” month. It’s a reminder to prepare for the changing weather and life safety emergencies. “We have had an interesting year in Colorado weather patterns this year leaving some people to believe we are going to have a strong winter season” said Cory Stark, Coordinator with the Office of Emergency Management. Having a vehicle survival kit is a good habit to have with items like blankets, warm weather gear, non perishables and water, flares and reflectors, essential medications, cell phone chargers, waterproof matches and candles, portable radios, flash lights, batteries, fire extinguisher, 1st aid kit and always try and keep your vehicle full of gas during the colder months.

The intent of the preparedness campaign is to get the word out to start preparing for winter weather and personal safety. The preparedness campaign reaches out to our kids as well, with an exciting new assembly that is reaching out to schools. Two schools in Elbert County were selected for “Preparedness Month” by Emergency Management for an opportunity from “Ready Colorado” and “Radio Disney” with a preparedness assembly. Elbert and Kiowa school districts will host this exciting and informative assembly on the 2nd of September to bring entertainment around safety practices for elementery and middle school students. “This is a great opportunity for the kids to have some fun learning the importance of personal safety” said Cory Stark.

In light of “Preparedness Month” Emergency Management is bringing more CPR opportunities for the public to get this important training. Preparedness is not just about the weather and travel but home and health too. “Community CPR and AED (Automated External Defribulator) is the single most important training community members can do to prepare themselves for family emergencies” said Dian Bowers, Fire Chief of the Kiowa Fire Department. Emergency Management agrees and will host another class courtesy of Citizen Corps on October 10th 2009 at 10:00am with location to be determined. Seating is by RSVP only and class size is limited, so call and reserve your seat today by calling the Office of Emergency Management at 303-805-6132
“Getting prepared for emergencies we hope we never have, can be a challenging task, but surviving a storm or saving a life is an immeasurable reward” said Cory Stark
