Current mood:  sad
It was an October day in 1998 that changed my life forever. I was heading home from a writing appointment when I passed a little puppy laying on the side of the road. I thought he'd probably been hit by a car and he probably hadn't survived but I stopped anyway because something inside of me was hoping he was okay. As soon as I walked over to him he jumped up and started wagging his little tail. He was so filthy that I thought he was a chocolate colored lab but when I got him home and gave him a bath I found out that he was a little golden retriever puppy or at least that's what I thought he was. I definitely thought I was going to have a BIG dog on my hands but months went by and he only grew longer not taller. Everybody always had their opinions on what they thought he was. My dad called him Falcor while my friends nicknamed him the Golden Weenie. My niece Hailey called him the Lick Shark because he was always licking her little hands... probably because there was still a trace food on them. Buddy was my very first rescue puppy.
Buddy wasn't your average dog. I swear sometimes it felt like he was a human trapped in that little body. He went with me everywhere from the studio to sing demo's to Topsail Island for a writers retreat. He was there through the best times and the worst times. Through broken hearts, getting a record deal, losing grandfathers, hit songs, losing a record deal, getting married... you name it he was right there. The only constant I had in my life for 12 years.
Now I'd be lying if I said Buddy was the nicest dog in the world. He was known to do a little biting here and there including the time he bit through John's bottom lip because John was too close to me. They of course kissed and made up.
Buddy also had a hard time adjusting to having what he considered "dogs" in the house. He barked and growled and regulated the house quite often. Every time we added a new family member he would give me that frustrated look. I guess he just wasn't a dog person.
It's hard to believe that 12 years have gone by since that first day I looked into his little puppy dog eyes. Buddy's eyes always spoke to me. I could always understand every word he said. Letting him go was the hardest thing I've ever had to do but he told me with those beautiful brown eyes he was tired and he was ready. I know that my Paw Paw Jack was waiting for him as soon as he got to heaven and I know they went on a big long walk together just like they used to do. I will cry many more tears for my sweet boy. I will miss him every day. There is an enormous empty space where he used to be. I know time heals and soon I will only smile when I think of him. There are so many wonderful memories.
I want to close my blog with an email I just got from my Maw Maw Adah. She always knows how to word things to make me understand...
 Rachel
It was time for Buddy to go back to heaven.  God sent an angel to earth to protect you and love you more than anyone. God , knowing you ... decided to send a dog angel.  Buddy 's job was finished with you. Someday you will see him again. He will come back when another little girl needs him.  You will see him well and happy and playing with another little girl and when you do, just say hi to him and give him a big hug. He will come to you. I believe this with all my heart. There are lots of dog angels. I can think of a million times dogs have saved peoples lives. Just say thank you God for sending me Buddy for a little while and now you can send him to someone else who needs him... but don't let him out on the highway to wait for someone to come along its too dangerous.
Maw Maw Adah

RIP Buddy... There will never be another dog like you

Current mood:  nostalgic
I should REALLY be in bed right now but for some odd reason I'm still wide awake. I ran across an old review of my debut album Where I Belong and it made me want to listen to it again. I haven't listened to that album for many years but since my new one is about to come out I thought it would be fun to listen to the first one.
It brings back a lot of memories and I'm feeling very nostalgic right now. As I listened to "If That Chair Could Talk" I started to cry. I always loved that song and still believe someone else should record it and make it a hit!
I decided to post the four singles from Where I Belong on MySpace so you could all go back in time with me. A lot of people have no idea that I had two singles before "Me and Emily". "Days Like This" was the first single which went to #16 on the charts. Looking back I was a pretty lucky girl that my first single went top 20

On a different note, John and I are nominated for song of the year for the 2009 JPF Music Awards. I posted the banner on my page so you guys can go vote for "Baby Don't Let Me Go" John is super excited to be nominated

The artwork for "What Didn't Kill Me" has been finished and the CD will go into production next week. We are hoping for a mid August release. Hopefully some of you can make it out to the release party. I'll keep you posted on the date for that.

Enjoy the oldies :-)
xoxo

Current mood:  relaxed
I feel like I haven't blogged in ages. Since today is my first "real" day off in months I thought I would take a moment to catch everybody up on what's going on in Rachel's world.
The biggest and most exciting change for me is my new publishing deal. I just became a staff writer for EMI Music Publishing. I can't tell you how happy I am to be at such a great company. It ROCKS!!! I'm doing my first demo session on April 27th so get ready for more new songs :-) I'm actually going to start a new MySpace page called ShadowCash Music to put new song demo's on because I know so many of you have favorites on this page that you hate to see go. This way everyone will be happy. So keep your eyes open for that page to be in my top friends
My new record is...and has been finished for a month now. I know some of you are patiently awaiting it's release. I'm exploring some options right now to make sure that I get it released with the right people and in the right way so thank you so much for being patient. New photo's are also on the way.
I'm VERY excited to tell you that I co-wrote the first single being released on new Atlantic Records artist Jesse Lee. "It's a Girl Thing" is now available on iTunes. Go buy it!!!  You won't be disappointed!!! You're gonna fall in love with Miss Jesse. What a sweet girl!!!  I just saw the video and it's so super cute. It should be posted on her myspace page soon. Start calling your local radio stations to request May 5th.
I'm heading to LA next week to write with Jewel. I can't tell you how excited I am to do that. I've been a fan of her writing for so long. I can't believe that I'm getting the awesome opportunity to write with her myself. I'm really looking forward to it. Gonna spend the weekend working on ideas :-)
I'm also looking forward to spending a few days in sunny California as I sit here and look out the window and listen to the tornado sirens going off in the background. It's that time of year here in TN. Allergies and Tornado's.
The dogs are as crazy as ever!!! Buddy is such a trooper for putting up with the wild antics of Shadow and Cash. Cash now weighs 95 lbs and is definitely the new alpha in the Lancaster home. Gracie, my sweet little girl has become my walking buddy. She and I love to take longs walks to get away from all the boys in the house.
John is doing great. Still working for Gary Allan and loving it. He's off for a month so he and I are going to do some serious writing!!! I'm looking forward to seeing what we can come up with. My favorite song I've ever written is Only Lonely Girl which we wrote one night while drinking a nice bottle of wine.
I lost my sweet grandmother Mona Lee last month. It's very hard to say goodbye to the ones we love but I know she's in a much better place. Just knowing she's back in the arms my Paw Paw Charlie makes me smile.
I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend. Be safe if you're traveling.
Happy Easter !!!!
Rachel

I think I can, I think I can, I think I AM finally finishing my record. I'm so excited. Chad Carlson and I have been working on this record for almost a year now and we are finally on the home stretch.
From time to time you've heard several of the tracks on my MySpace. These same songs will be amped up versions of what you've heard. We put the finishing touches on the tracks last Thursday and I have one more vocal to sing. I can't wait for you to hear it. It has definitely been a labor of love.
Next step is a photo shoot and artwork. I'm HOPING to have everything ready by March. I'll keep you posted on a release date. Now all I have to do is figure out what to call it...Any ideas???

Ok...so yes...I'm bored but I'm also completely enjoying the fact that all I've done for two days is sit on my red leather chaise with Shadow and Cash fighting over who's going to sit at my feet while I watch Lifetime Movie Network for a solid 12 hours a day (only turning once in a while to check and see what's going on in Pine Valley on All My Children). 2008 was such an exciting and busy year for me that I feel like I deserve a little down time.

I've been thinking about the year in music. 2008 had a lot of great music coming out. I decided to make a list of my top 20 favorite songs of the year (not including my own songs because let's face it we know I like those).

5. 27 Dresses

8. Into the Wild

9. Saw IV

10. PS I love you

It seems like the older I get the faster time flies by. I was making my 2009 Wish List and a dream board yesterday and thinking it feels like I just did that for 2008. Luckily last year was very good to me and I accomplished a lot of my goals. Some of my to do list will forward on to my goals for 2009 but that's ok. There's no way to get it all done in one year.

I'm thankful for

my husband

My best friends... the old and new. Jennifer, Jen, Victoria, Carole Ann, Christy, Lila, Maile, Nikki

my beautiful family especially Hailey and Reese

for the newest member of our family Cash. He has been such a blessing in our lives.

Shadow, Gracie, and Buddy for making everyday fun.

Camp Chaos 37206 for all of the awesome work you do saving the pups... and to all of the wonderful fosters and adoptive parents who take the dogs in off the streets.

for my publisher Full Circle for working so hard for me over the last 3 years.

for Jesse Lee, Kristy Lee Cook, Danielle Peck, and Jessica Simpson recording my songs for their albums AND for getting to write with some other fantastic artists this year including The Coppola's and Julie Roberts (fingers crossed for cuts on their albums).

for my partners in crime Bruce and Victoria

for my awesome band...John, Nick, Tim, Bruce, and Rob...You guys rock

for my engineer and producer Chad Carlson

for you... the fans who keep coming back for more Rachel Proctor songs
