Charlie Parrwww.myspace.com/charlieparrduluth

We welcome the return of Charlie Parr to this intimate London venue. Duluth's finest purveyor of traditional American piedmont style blues. This is the last London show for Charlie in 2009 so make sure you don't miss it...

It's no surprise that he counts among his fans the illustrator R. Crumb and slow-core rockers Low, Charlie's music has an appeal that spans genres, the authentic voice and utter lack of pretence of the music speaks to everyone. Charlie is considered 'one of the most important contemporary protagonists of the American folk tradition' by the Bath International Music Festival, and it's no surprise. These songs are records of the journeys, troubles and experiences of real people. His most recent release, Roustabout (Misplaced Music) is a superb collection of new and traditional songs.
'Charlie Parr has an inseparable affinity with his music, a 100 percent-proof blend of bluegrass, blues and country, with a rock-red seam of rag and stomp.' The Irish Times

Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou – www.myspace.com/trevormossandhannahlou

Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou are rare musicians. This formidable young husband and wife duo are redefining the modern folk musician. Their resilient and perfectly synchronised union of heart and mind hollers and sings in euphonious harmony, dancing elegantly with words masterfully placed.
Thee Intolerable Kidd - www.myspace.com/theeintolerablekidd
“All simple chord progressions bashed out to accompany schoolboy lyrics. The kidd looked good, and his music was simple and effective. I felt like leaning out of a Cadillac gushing over a guy who was from the wrong side of town.” – Run-riot.com
The Fox and the Bramble – www.myspace.com/thefoxandthebramble
A beguiling and riotous live show of swapped instruments and vocals, this anti-folk boy-girl duo are like a less crude Moldy Peaches. Their playful lyrics and charming melodies dance on the lip and linger on the air.

Hello,

Let's go baboon is putting on a Friday night show at The Wilmington Arms with the fantastic Golden Animals, She Keeps Bees (both from the US) and New Morning Blues and The Silver Abduction (ft. Allison from 18th Day of May).....
Gonna be a great show. One thing we forgot to organise was a dj to put on music in between acts. we can't provide any monies, just a Friday night in central London... I'd love it if I wasn't organising the show.
We're fairly flexible on music - interesting and intriguing, but fitting in with 'noisy-ish' acts... probably reference point is Sonic Cathedral, but I love loads of stuff...
Get in touch if interested - Stuart 07903 950 613 or stugibb at hotmail.com. Basically text with some suggestions of stuff you'll play and that should do it...
Cheers, Stuart

It is August, you are all probably on holiday/festival somewhere... hope it was good.

Our next two gigs feature acts performing at three of the finest festivals the UK has.

Firstly, Golden Animals and She Keeps Bees rock out the Wilmington Arms next Friday night. Both US acts, who are over for Summer Sundae and Green Man Festivals.... Secondly, Charlie Parr  will do his final London show of 2009 at Brixton Windmill on Monday 14th September following his appearance at End of the Road festival (I think its almost sold out, if not, get buying!)...

More information shortly about two October gigs... including International John Peel Day on 10th October at Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes.

Take care, see you soon, Cheers

Stuart

Golden Animals – www.myspace.com/goldenanimals

This is a must see, rare central London show from one of the finest live acts around. They are performing as part of their festival tour (Summer Sundae and Green Man). They provide an intense psychedelic blast of far-out blues rock following the traditions set by The Doors. File with Two Gallants, Dead Meadow, Kings of Leon...
Golden Animals were an experience. The smell of incense, the sheer wall of sound that attacked the senses, and these two rockers going at it really took the audience to a place out of time. LoudVine.com

She Keeps Bees – www.myspace.com/shekeepsbees

We’re delighted to add She Keeps Bees to the line up. Here is a recent review from The Guardian:
This stripped-down blues-rock duo are an anomaly in their adopted home of Brooklyn. While most of their neighbours are painting alt-pop into kaleidoscopic new colours, this compelling debut cleaves to a version of rock that is sparse, soulful and defiantly retro. White Stripes comparisons are inevitable, not least because of the thrillingly primal way Andy LaPlant thumps the drums, but it is raw emotion akin to Cat Power that comes through most strongly on tracks such as "Release" and the startling "Bones Are Tired", on which Jessica Larrabee's unadorned voice is at its most desolate.

New Morning Blues – www.myspace.com/newmorningblues

Like Television playing songs from The Last Waltz... low down dirty troubled blues in the Jesus and Mary Chain mould, building up a strong London following, they’ve recently at Alan McGee’s Death Disco night and are formed by Ian De Sylva who has recorded for Rough trade and Medicine...

The Silver Abduction – www.myspace.com/thesilverabduction

The phenomenal new project from vocalist Allison Brice (The Eighteenth Day of May) and composer / producer / all around pop-svengali Andy Dragazis (Blue States). The Silver Abduction's music enjoys a slightly otherworldly 1950’s feel, but with an entirely modern expression. Lush arrangements perfectly compliment Allison’s mesmeric vocals, and the result is an entirely unique sound, rich and enchanting...

MY SAD CAPTAINS

THE OXYGEN PONIES (Brooklyn)

RANDI RUSSO (Brooklyn)

8pm

£4.50adv/£5 door - www.wegottickets.com/event/54041

MY SAD CAPTAINS (London)
With their debut album just released to widespread approval on Stolen Recordings label, this London-based quintet have managed to excite many in the capital with their slacker indie pop, and have already received loads of airplay on Radio 1 and XFM.
MSC produce an american alt-pop sound, touched with country lashes and occasional fiery noise outbursts which has been described as sounding a little like Pavement getting a pop overhaul with violin, melodica, keyboard, glockenspiel and various toys.
‘One of the capital’s best kept secrets’ - The Fly
www.myspace.com/mysadcaptains

THE OXYGEN PONIES (Brooklyn, NY)
..is all about disenchantment, but somehow it remains uplifting. Songwriter Paul Megna's songs are a constant tug-of-war, reaching unexpected crescendos and spiralling down on a tightrope of oblivion, yet they never lose their balance.
Signed to Tummy Touch Records.
For those who like: Red House Painters, Afghan Whigs, Elliott Smith, Lloyd Cole, Arab Strap, Sparklehorse, Talk Talk, Smog etc
www.myspace.com/theoxygenponies

RANDI RUSSO (Brooklyn, NY)
...mixes emotionally drenched indie-rock with psychedelic, punk, art-rock, garage, and folk influences. Her velvety singing style is as equally raw and beautiful as her guitar playing is edgy and unusual. Randi's a southpaw who plays her guitar upside-down and backwards which creates interesting chords and sounds.

Hello there, hope you are mighty fine. We’ve gone from 1 gig to 4 in the space of a week. Featured in this month’s classic episode, Our next Gig, Forthcoming Gigs, Join Let’s go baboon as a volunteer! Our April update and www.letsgobaboon.com website goes live!

Right, let’s crack on...

Our next gig – 26th May at the Luminaire:

Charlie Parr is back for his second London show this year. We’ve moved it up to the Luminaire by popular demand and we are thoroughly looking forward to it. He is performing at End of the Road festival this year too, which has a great line-up. We are doing our double headliner thing again and joining Charlie, will be one of England’s finest acts, Nancy Elizabeth. Not only two headliners, but a heartily good support – My Two Toms... These guys really are the funk in a folk kind of way. We put them on back in 06 at the 12 Bar and they went down a storm... Also, DJ-ing will be Honest Jons – who have recently put out a compilation featuring Mr Charlie Parr.... We have just put more tickets on sale due to popular demand. Remember, they’re £6 advance and £8 on the door...

A note on forthcoming gigs:

26th May – Luminaire – Nancy Elizabeth, Charlie Parr, My Two Toms + DJ Honest Jons - £6 adv, £8 door, 7.30pm

29th June – Tbc – Kaiser Cartel & more to be confirmed very shortly if we can sort ourselves...

21st August – The Wilmington Arms – Golden Animals (US), tbc, tbc, tbc - £4 adv, £5 door

25th October – Brixton WindmillLazarus Clamp & more tbc

What happened in April

Let’s go baboon went to the Half Moon, Herne Hill for the first time. The venue is great, staff are very nice and we recommend it (also keep an eye out for record fairs there in future...). We didn’t quite get the crowd we had hoped, primarily due to the fact about 150 people in the pub were watching the footie... aw well. Danny George Wilson was phenomenal as ever, rousing I think is the word to use. We had a welcome return of The Diamond Family Archive who have matured fantastically well and deserve far greater attention than they currently receive. Our showcase was Woodpecker Wooliams who performed her first show in London. It was exceptional, made me think of Bjork & Joanna Newsom but with a twisted traditional British folk element...  Standing in at very short notice for Citizen Helene (get well soon, we’ll have you back shortly!), was Monster Bobby. The work of a fine songsmith indeed who uses his influences (the flawless Disco Inferno) to great effect...

Let’s go baboon website launch

We’ve finally sorted out our new website... and we’re really quite chuffed with it. Check it out, let us know what you think, feedback and suggestions and thoughts are valued... Indeed, give us a good suggestion on our website, and we’ll give you a compilation CD... Remember: www.letsgobaboon.com.

Join Let’s go baboon part #1 – volunteer/work experience/intern...

Too much information for one update, but essentially we’re looking for someone to join the term – A kind of intern/volunteer if you will who is keen to gain experience within music promoting, whilst not having to commit to huge amounts of time... More information, here – get in touch if interested, pass on to relevant folk as you see fit...

Join Let’s go baboon part #2 – where to find us...

Various ways and means to keep up to date with let’s go baboon (far too many really), they are:

Mailing list – email stugibb@hotmail.com

Facebook – Let’s go baboon group
