The Commander Series is a webcomic I created in 3D using
Daz Studio and
Blender. Below is the first page.

I love Sci-Fi as much as I love Fantasy, and I've always loved the space opera genre, so I've been kicking this idea around in my head for some time, I even wrote a short story about it, but I never really moved on it.
Then one day I was reading an issue of
ImagineFX Magazine and they mentioned Daz Studio as a free 3D application that many artists featured in the magazine seemd to use. I downloaded it and gave it a whirl.
I was completely lost at first, but I dug in to see what I could do with the program. It quickly became obvious that I could not create my own work with Daz, I could really only pose and modify existing models.
That led me on a quest for a free modeling app, and I came up with Blender. Once I found it, I pretty much opened my mind to a whole bunch of other possibilities. I was in the mood to experiment, and so I came back to my space opera idea and set out to realize it in 3D.
I determined to do as much as I could for the least amount of money. I used some of the free figures from Daz, and purchased a few other background props and sets when they were on sale. The ship itself was created from scratch by me in Blender. So I'm rendering out images from both apps, compositing them in Photoshop, and adding the text in Illustrator.
I'm pretty happy with these results, but I'm not sure how quickly I will follow it up. I've kind of
fallen out of love with Daz Studio these days, as the app runs extremely slowly on my machine. It got to the point where I would literally
dread working on the comic because I knew how slow and unweildly the program was. I'm not that anxious to jump back into it.
So these days I concentrate more on Blender, and I'm really pouring my efforts into creating my own figures from scratch. Since Blender runs so smoothly, and can pretty much do everything Daz does and more, I'm going to try to create the next episodes entirely in there.
Anyway please feel free to give it a read and I hope you enjoy it. Please let me know if you have any comments or questions. Thanks for reading.
