During our recent trip to Toronto for NXNE we had the chance to talk with Dan Busheikin of andPOP. Dan writes, "Holler Wild Rose’s “Our Little Hymnal” is a mainstay of my stereo rotation right now. The band crafts incredibly expansive songs, packed with ambient guitars and delicate melody. There’s a lot of love in this band, and it really comes through in the music. I met up with two of the members during NxNE to speak about their band."

Here is the interview: http://www.andpop.com/tag/holler-wild-rose/

During our recent trip to Toronto for NXNE we got to perform at the Toronto Academy of Recording Arts as part of their Secret Sessions. Below is a video from AUX TV that has an interview and a subdued portion of our song "Pale and Faithful Morning". There is a really great performance by our friends the Paint Movement, too!

You can also head over to Secret Sessions to download an mp3 of the NxNe session; included are the aforementioned "Pale and Faithful Morning" , and a brand new song entitled "Skein of Yarns".

Many thanks to the folks at Myspace Music Canada for featuring our video, "Marylawn Hair" on the front page of Myspace Music Canada this week. If you haven't had a chance to see the video yet - you can view it by clicking here.

March 26, 2009 - Thursday

Hey Everyone!

We've been invited to play a very special show this Saturday at 8 pm with our friends, The Loom (http://www.myspace.com/theloommusic).

Vox Pop (http://www.voxpopnet.net), an amazing coffee shop / community center / book store / printing press in the Ditmas Park neighborhood of Brooklyn (the Q to Cortelyou Road) is in danger of closing and we're excited to be joining the effort to stop this from happening!

You can read more about their situation here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/16/nyregion/16ditmas.html?scp=3&sq=vox%20pop&st=cse , but in a nutshell if they aren't able to raise upwards of $20,000 by the end of the week, they are going to be shut down.

Several people and musicians have come together and do what they can to help them raise the money. All proceeds from Saturday's show will be donated directly to Vox Pop. So come join us on Saturday at 8 - there will be several other incredible artists performing and its all for a great cause!

Hope to see you there and come early because we are expecting some special guests!

Audio Blood Tea Party featuring Serb Superb,
Great Lenin's Ghost, The Paint Movement, Our History of Cowboys and
Holler, Wild Rose!

http://itsnotthebandihateitstheirfans.blogspot.com/2009/03/audio-blood-tea-party-featuring-serb.html

Which brings us to the greatest surprise of the week. Out of the 23 bands
that I saw over the past week, New Jersey's Holler, Wild Rose!
were easily the most impressive. I love that feeling when you're
watching a band and suddenly you realize that you are actually in the
midst of greatness. That moment for me came when they performed Captive Train.

The harmonies were absolutely cherubic on that song, and the steady
build of those ringing guitars continued to climb to euphoric heights
before Jon Mosloskie's high pitched Buckley-inspired
throat tore a strip out of the atmosphere and made me completely forget
where I was. The reaction of those around me when the song was over
pretty much summed up the consensus that we weren't just watching an
amazing performance, but this was something downright legendary. Their
soaring melodies and epic falsetto's suck you in and hold you captive,
and a mere mortal is powerless against their ambient charms. Whew! OK,
I'll admit that overexpressive gushing does not a viable music critic
make, but dang it, I'm a fan too and it's a shame that there weren't
more people out to witness this show. Hopefully these Jersey boys will
be back again soon.

Part-time band: Radiohead reminiscent Holler, Wild Rose! plays Montreal with first EP in two years

by Joelle Lemieux

What keeps a band who hasn’t released an album in two years relevant?

If you’re Holler, Wild Rose! it’s an unending series of gigs, and a Radiohead-reminiscent appeal that still feels new.

In 2007, Holler, Wild Rose! released Our Little Hymnal, their most
recent LP. Toted as one of the year’s best albums, it’s hard not to
wonder why there hasn’t been a follow-up. Lead singer John Mosloskie
cites full-time employment as a reason, but promises a next album to be
“record[ed] towards the end of this year” with most of it already
written. “I would love to be able to record and create,” he says. At
this point, it’s more “logistics” than lack of desire.

For Holler, Wild Rose! time away from the studio has been a chance
to get their name out into the ears of the public, “hitting blogs [and]
online publications.”

What was originally a foursome (Mosloskie, drummer Ryan Smyth,
bassist Scott Vangenderen, and guitarist Ryan Cheresnick) has become,
over the years, seven with the addition of Mosloskie’s sister Morgan as
keyboardist, as well as rhythm guitarist Lou D’Elia and newest member
Steve Oyola on guitar.

Fresh out of Jersey, Mosloskie says the band often comes up against
some “unfair media stereotypes” borne of TV shows like “The Sopranos,”
but stays true to his Jersey roots. “What our music will do is give us
a little cred,” he assures me. Besides, Jersey’s not all bad, “there
are mountains and oceans and it’s good here,” he says, so I accuse him
of sounding like a travel brochure.

He laughs, and in that moment I realize that he is the voice behind
the band. “I’m just getting over a cold,” he says defensively,
“Although, I did say I would be honest. This is pretty much what I
sound like normally.”

So, what’s the significance of Holler, Wild Rose! and where did all
the punctuation come from? Like all bands there came a time when things
had to change. The band, then called A Dive, “were at this show,
supposed to play at 11.” Mosloskie remembers, “the time just kept
getting pushed back, we all got really frustrated [and] started taking
it out on each other.

“It got pretty heated,” he admits. “We all believed in the music,”
and in the end, it “opened our eyes to the need. [...] It was just that
song [Holler, Wild Rose!], the direction of the music, something we had
to pursue.” They changed the name, and they didn’t look back. To this
day, they close all shows with Holler, Wild Rose! and it’s Mosloskie’s
favourite song to perform.

This week, they’ll be coming to Canada for a second time since their
inaugural trek in 2007. This time, the band will be touring with a new
four song EP, The Yarn, which includes a live song and a previously
unreleased instrumental. “Montreal was a great show,” he remembers, and
when asked to describe his band’s live show, had only one thing to say:
“a wall of sound.” I know Mosloskie’s “excited to come back,” so you
should get excited to see them.

Holler, Wild Rose! - Our Little Hymnal

http://itsnotthebandihateitstheirfans.blogspot.com/2009/03/contest-holler-wild-rose-prize-pack.html

It's no secret that, although I do enjoy a catchy hook and a simple
melody, nothing impresses me more than an artist that has the guts to
stretch beyond the masses' collective acceptance of stagnant music
forms. New Jersey's Holler, Wild Rose! have released a magnificent
album in Our Little Hymnal by doing just that. Admittedly, the album's
epic length coupled with its minimalistic approach does require a bit
of patience, but the payoff is well worth the effort.

John Mosloskie's voice has a certain Jeff Buckley-esque strain to it,
while the music is reminiscent of early Verve and perhaps a touch of Sigur Rós.

What blows me away about the songs on this release is their ability to
completely suck you in to the point where you literally get lost in
their coherent atmosphere. One example is the album's 12 minute center
piece called Poor In Spirit. The track's use of space and controlled
(i.e. - not rushed) timing creates an air of grand seraphic tranquility
which actually managed to hold my attention, despite its length. Other
songs on the album such as Holler, Wild Rose and Mary Lawn Hair are
a wonderful mix of cacophony and serenity, shifting back and forth
in a way that is challenging, yes, but never jarring. Captive Train
includes some Road To Nowhere-type choral harmonies accompanied by
in and out psychedelia and uplifting percussion. Sun Vines is perhaps
the poppiest song on the album, perhaps like a bluesy Shins,
although it still clocks in at just shy of 7 minutes enabling it the
room to breathe, which aids in the song's overall excellence. By the
time you get to the album's hushed closer Promise Braid, you've completed
a fulfilling ambient journey, a passionate art rock experience that you
just can't wait to embark upon again.

As you can tell from my previous reviews of other bands, I've never been
one to hide the fact that one of the greatest travesties of the CD age
is an artist's need to extend an album's length much longer than
necessary. Holler, Wild Rose! is the exception to that thought.
Although Our Little Hymnal is over an hour in length, I feel that
it never lags, and there are so many ideas flowing throughout
the disc, that the length seems just enough to accurately capture the mood.

Our Little Hymnal is actually almost a couple of years old now and
the band is preparing to release a new EP entitled The Yarn EP.
It sounds like they're taking a slightly more southern blues
approach this time around.
