i reading an interview with christina hoff sommers, who generally as a young anarcha-feminist pisses.me.the.fuck.off. her views bashing the younger feminist generation for viewing patriarchy as a problem are just completely absurd. and frankly, i don't understand how she believes complete legal equality will somehow mean complete social equality. that just makes no sense whatsoever to me.
but anyway.
in the interview she says one thing specifically which sent me over the edge.
"London[interviewer]: You use the phrase "equity feminism." Some women feel that feminism largely misses the point by defining liberation as the freedom to act as a man. They feel that this idea overlooks many of the unique qualities that women have that are not necessarily tied to equality. For example, they believe feminism has contributed to the dishonoring of the American mother. So perhaps the new feminism isn't about "equity" so much as equality of respect, honor, and compensation?

Sommers: Yes, that is how I would view it. I would view it also as about choice. If a woman chooses to be a conventional wife and mother, then, fine, that is the triumph of feminism — that we can have choices as men have. But the thing is, I would go even further. I think that many women choose to continue to be very feminine. They enjoy feminine artifice — doing their nails, their hair, wearing high heels, and fishnet stockings."

how this woman could consider herself truely a feminist is completely beyond me.
she adds dangerously to the oppression of women just as this "being a porn star is totally feminist and liberating" idea.
she does what a lot of people do - keeps her views within an acceptable oh-no-can't-be-too-radical spectrum. thinks and researches until she gets to a point too radical to be acceptable to mainstream society. [which let's be honest...too radical for mainstream society when it comes to feminism is not radical in the least.]
she's afraid to delve deeper for fear of coming off too unacceptable. too unapproachable. not a pretty little cooperative enough woman.
she stops at "women choose to be conventional housewives." she doesn't dare ask why women would choose to be acceptable baby machines. doesn't dare ask why women would choose to objectify themselves. doesn't dare ask why women would choose to be these things seen as conventionally "feminine".
because if she did, she would see there is a much deeper problem than women don't earn as much as men.
and that's scary to a woman with a desperate need to be acceptable.

in my mind she's infamous for giantly bullshit statements like the above.
but there's also little things she says in the interview. something you could just read over without another thought. but these little things are hugely important in my view of her.
for example, "If you hate a book so much, why even review it? Why even give it any attention?"
what!? if you believe something is wrong you should just not even pay attention to it? pretend it doesn't exist? talk about something else?
how would women have even come as far as they have if they had acted this way!?
since she believes we're so close to complete equality...how does she think women got there? ignoring sexism?
it just doesn't make any sense.
how can this woman be an active feminist? how?
she confused the shit out of me later in the interview when she says, "When I originally started questioning feminism, I did it mainly because no one else was doing it."
...do i even need to point out why this is confusing? no one questions feminism? are you KIDDING?

it makes me so upset to read shit like this.
it is so wrong. and it's DANGEROUS. it's dangerous to equality to masquerade yrself as a feminist while bashing women and basic feminist ideas.
speaking against BASIC FEMINIST IDEAS is NOT pro-women. is NOT helpful is overcoming oppression. is NOT FEMINIST.
