Kentucky Equality Federation applauds legislation pre-filed by Representative Mary Lou Marzian (BR 93) to place the issue of same-sex marriage or civil unions back in the hands of Kentucky citizens.

Earlier this year, Kentucky Equality Federation and Marriage Equality Kentucky began collecting signatures to present to lawmakers to repeal the law by giving voters another opportunity to vote on the issue. The "Marriage Declaration," started in July 2009.

Currently, the Commonwealth will not recognize any type of same-sex union. Marriage, domestic partnerships, and civil unions are all illegal in Kentucky (even if performed in other countries or states).

"We are very pleased with Representative Marzain's pre-filed bill," stated Kentucky Equality Federation President Jordan Palmer. "Currently, same-sex couples are basically 'second-class' citizens even though we pay the same taxes as everyone else; same-sex couples currently have absolutely no rights whatsoever and the Kentucky Constitution doesn't mention having a lower class of people. If this passes both the Kentucky House and Senate and voters ratify it, lawmakers would then be able to legislate domestic-partnerships, or civil unions, such as the new domestic partnership law in the state of Washington."

A Conversation with Statehouse Candidate Matthew Vanderpool
Vanderpool is undertaking a major battle in an effort to unseat Lee; complete community support is essential.

Matthew Vanderpool (D-Lexington) will face a tough race against incumbent anti-gay, and who most consider homophobic, Representative Stan Lee (R-Lexington) who has been in the Kentucky House of Representatives since 2001.

United We Stand has a exclusive interview with Vanderpool.

"Our public officials are elected to fight for the needs of all, not a few; gays are a part of that "all" group. This type of "two dimensional thinking" holds Kentucky back instead of moving us forward towards a brighter future." -

The GLBT community is the only community worldwide that does not learn its history at home, in public schools or in religious institutions. GLBT History Month teaches our heritage, provides role models, builds community and makes the civil rights statement of our extraordinary national and international contributions.

In the 1990's, teachers and community organizations determined that a month should be designated for GLBT history. They chose October because public schools are in session and traditions, such as National Coming Out Day, occur then.

Bill to repeal DOMA to be filed in the U.S. House on Sept. 15th. Most expect the bill to fail if the provision allowing states to ignore gay marriages performed outside their borders isn't left in tact.

Kennedy fought for HIV/AIDS funding, was one of the few Senators to vote against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996, he helped the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act pass the Senate in 2009, and he also introduced the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

In order to overturn Prop 8 in California, LGBTI Rights Organizations must change the hearts/minds of more than 1,000 California citizens per day to successfully repeal it in 2010 and 500 per day if they wait until 2012. This means California LGBTI Rights Organizations have a very long road in front of them.

While Kentucky LGBTI Rights Organizations have supported California in their struggle for marriage equality, THE TIME HAS COME FOR US TO DO SOMETHING FOR OURSELVES.

Yesterday, Marriage Equality Kentucky® (a group funded, and ultimately controlled by Kentucky Equality Federation's Board of Directors) started an online signature petition to overturn Kentucky Constitutional Amendment 223A.

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT MARRIAGE IS A BASIC CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT THE COMMONWEALTH SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO ALL PEOPLE? If so, sign the petition, and tell your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers about it! Nothing speaks louder to your lawmakers in Frankfort than the voice of their constituents!

SIGN YOUR NAME NOW: http://www.kentuckylgbt.org/ht/d/Join/pid/1267412

** All signatures will be organized by zip code and matched to voting districts. Once enough signatures are collected, they will be presented to each member of the Kentucky Legislature. **

Louisville Pastor (New Bethel Church) Urges His Flock to Bring Guns to Church

With gay hate killings the highest in more than 10 years because of gay marriage, and an increasing number of gay pride events nationwide..... this puts the icing on the cake...... a religious leader with a gun; this particular minister may not be 'dangerous with a gun,' encouraging others could be disastrous.

The 2009 Kentucky Legislative Session is officially over.

As Kentucky Equality Federation predicted, Senate Bill 68 died before the recess.

The Great Hall in the Kentucky Capitol is finally empty of anti-equality lawmakers, who will not be back in full force until the 2010 Legislative Session (unless serving on an Interim Committee).

Though we can celebrate for now, we must be prepared for similar legislation to be filed next year. Remember, the 2010 Legislative Session (which begins in January) will be a long session.

The Family Foundation of Kentucky told the Associated Press that they support Senate Bill 68 (unmarried couples adoption ban, click here for details)……well of course they do.

This is another example of how so-called family organizations are some of the most useless, money-hungry scams in the world with their bizarre and all-encompassing ‘gay fetish.’

With national divorce rates rising because of layoffs, increases in daycare, and an economy in the tank, one would think a ‘family oriented organization’ would be focused on economic solutions to help take the stress off couples (such as using their money to provide free daycare instead of lobbying Frankfort against domestic partner benefits, and using children as political pawns). But, instead, they continue to focus on keeping a minority group of families from having the same civil liberties and protections as the majority.

How can excluding gay couples from hospital rooms, fighting to keep us from providing health insurance for each other, and teaching hatred for people who are different be a family value?

In Kentucky, you cannot be fired for being a smoker, but you can be fired for being gay……now THAT is cheating (what the Family Foundation of Kentucky called Kentucky Equality Federation’s coordination of the National Freedom to Marry Day in Kentucky).

It is our generation’s obligation and opportunity to bring equality to the gay community; we stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us – the time is here.
