Current mood:  excited
Category: Music

I am very excited to announce this upcoming collaboration with dancer/choreographer Christy Funsch.

It will take place on two different Sundays in December, 12/6 and 12/13, at 4pm in the courtyard of the Legion of Honor. I will sing, they will dance.

Admission is free. Please join us and take advantage of the lovely surroundings - the Museum itself and the dramatic trails of Land's End.

Details are below, and I will post reminders as the dates draw close.

Have a wonderful holiday!

Hélène

Funsch Dance Experience
presents:

FUNSCH SOLOS VOLUME II: WATER SOLOS

Sunday, December 6th & 13th, 2009 at 4:00 PM:

The Legion of Honor, 34th Avenue and Clement Street,
Lincoln Park, San Francisco
Performances take place outside around the water fountain

Admission is free; for information, call 415.902.5371
or visit www.funschdance.org

Drawing from her recent group work White Girls For Black Power, which examined the nexus of black power and feminist theory, Funsch Solos Volume II: Water Solos brings the nine dancers of Christy Funsch's Funsch Dance Experience  out to Lincoln Park to perform around the fountain in front of the Legion of Honor. The contextual shift offers a more serene and spacious viewing of each solo and, consequentially, each dancer. This free outdoor performance marks Funsch's third concert of 2009 and features live music by local singer song writer Hélène Renaut. The solos are delivered with electric performances by Andrea Anderson, Christine Bonansea, Leonore Deaton, Aura Fischbeck, Jennifer Minore, Jody Pettle, Phoenicia Pettyjohn, Sarah Sass, and Julie Sheetz against the stunning backdrop of the Legion of Honor and Land's End.

Christy Funsch (Choreographer) is a dance maker, educator, and performer.  She presented her first full evening of choreography (Vinyl Garden) in 2001, and formed The Funsch Dance Experience in 2002.  She has shown her work in New York, Phoenix, Toronto, and throughout California.  Christy is currently a member of Stephen Pelton Dance Theater and collaborative partner of Sue Roginski.  She received her BA in Dance and English from Hamilton College, New York, and her MFA in Performance and Choreography from Arizona State University where she studied with Daniel Nagrin.  Funsch also holds a certification in Movement Analysis from the Laban Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies in New York. She has been awarded residencies at the Djerassi Ranch, CounterPULSE Theater, and ODC Theater, as well as funding from Theatre Bay Area’s CASH program and the Zellerbach Family Fund.  She has just received her third nomination for Outstanding Performance Awards from the Isadora Duncan Dance Award Committee.

Hélène Renaut (Musician) was raised on the green and rocky coast of Brittany, France, and now claims another coast, that of San Francisco, home. Live and on records, Hélène's music oscillates between gentle folk, British-influenced pop, and compositions that come closer to a song-poem. Listen and you will be met by a unique harmonic flair, poetic lyrics, and melodies that have been compared to "a paintbrush on figure skates" for their beautiful shapes – all delivered in an accomplished, yet heartrending French accented voice. Recent recordings include ‘The Deer Convention’ (2009), ‘Perfection's somewhere near your bones’, (2005, and, as the leader of the group Beam, a self-titled album, released on Antenna Farm Records in 2003. She has also collaborated to quite a few varied projects: violin and string arrangement for folk-pop duo Willow Willow (Mod Lang Records) and Papercuts (Gnomonsong), piano, violin and vocals on Donovan Quinn’s latest opus (Soft Abuse), vocal appearance on soul indie funk act Honeycut’s ‘The day I Turned to Glass’ (Quannum), original music for theater productions of ‘The False Servant’ (Marivaux) and ‘The Green Bird’ (Carlo Gozzi), and others.

So very pleased to announce that the amazing ladies of Gravel and Gold and the kind gents of aQuarius Records now carry a few copies of the Seasonal Sevens: Summer 7". Get them while they last!

Both shops are in the sunny Mission District of San Francisco, about a block from each other. Gravel and Gold is run by a triad of stellar ladies, Cassie, Nile and Lisa. Their shop is feast for the eyes, they carry so many unusual old and new items. Whether vintage, locally crafted or from across the pond, each object has its own story and the shopkeepers will be happy to tell you about it. Right now their walls are covered in gorgeous North American Indian and Central American woven textiles. Well worth the visit, and you can lounge on the hay bed by the window...
aQuarius Records might not need an introduction, being the Mission institution that they are. Rare new and old music, a knowledgeable and opinionated staff and a listening station...also peruse the small collection of (well chosen) new and used LPs. You can order online too!

Today, Bumblebee is coming out on a split seven inch. Isn't the yellow vinyl pretty? like the rising sun of summer. And look at that cover...I can't wait to hold one in my hands (very soon!), let alone put it on the record player. You can go and get yourself a copy from the excellent folks at Autumn Ferment Records. I will celebrate in San Francisco on July 20th (an amazing bill at the Cafe du Nord)- and throughout California over the summer. Check the show listing for details - and let me know if you'd like me to play a town near you!

With love,

Hélène

The wonderful Scottish label Autumn Ferment records is starting the Seasonal Sevens, a collection of 7" vinyl releases for each season. I am honored to be part of the first installment this summer, alongside the delightful Emily Scott. Please read below for details:

Afternoon folks!
Yes, we are delighted to announce that this summer Autumn Ferment starts a collection of seasonally inspired 7" records, the Seasonal Sevens. We thought it would be a rather nice idea to release a 7” vinyl for every season, starting with summer and running through to spring next year.  Each 7” will be a split release, highlighting two artists that we feel are quite special. Each 7” will come on lovely coloured vinyl representing the season in question. Each 7” will be strictly kept to a very limited pressing of 300 copies only and will be all hand numbered.
Starting off our seasonal collection will be the fantastic Emily Scott and Helene Renaut on the summer instalment, released on the 29th of June with pre-orders being taken on the 22nd of June. Be sure to get in early and get yourself the first release in the series.
Please visit the website for more details - http://www.autumnfermentrecords.com/page14.htm
Thanks for your time,
AFR xx

Hello hello! and ring in the new!

to do so we will be playing in Oakland tomorrow night, saturday the 3rd day of 09 - at the Uptown!...see details on the page.

also a few novelties: first - and long overdue - a video of Bumblebee by James Patrick Briggs (of Pigeon Farm Media) courageously taken during a particularly noisy show. but he did a very nice job putting it all together...

then, as a token from the Holidays, a trace of the Outta Sight Holiday bash...this link takes you to the whole 'album', including drunken moments and approximate lyrics...I did one a capella number (The cherry tree carol) and a John Cale song (A child's Christmas in Wales). The backing vocals/piano/and drumming on that one are courtesy of the Mumlers, who can learn harmonies faster than most people I know. Thank you gentlemen! hat down.

that's all for tonight. Enjoy and have a splendid new year!
