But I have a feeling the band that won this round is going to win shindig.

That's right - we have made it past round one.  We are playing at the semi-finals on Nov 24th.

From Vancouver, A Lengthy List of Lovers were to warm up the wide age range of people already in attendance. After a draw for prizes A Lengthy List of Lovers strutted on stage wearing some spacey looking outfits that had vintage connotations of what the future should look like. Making up the band were Alyson Fun on synthesizer/vocals and Daniel Brard on programming/guitars. Using the programmed beats and the abilities of the synthesizer, the group would get on with haunting vocals and chord progressions while the guitar rocked out.

The sound of A Lengthy List of Lovers has this feeling of The Organ in the vocals and the synthesizer whereas the sound of the guitar slightly emulated Doolittle era Pixies. At some point A Lengthy List of Lovers, who are clearly older twenty-somethings, made reference to a movie called the Wizard which was really a commercial for Super Mario Brothers Three. It seemed to whoosh over the heads of all minus the other older twenty-somethings. A Lengthy List of Lovers was a delightful way to start off a good show.

"The Biltmore Cabaret is one of my favourite venues. Small, and with great sound, it feels like coming home to your family, but a musical one that you genuinely like all the time. While I had never heard of Spookey Ruben until a week ago, everyone I met told me I was in for a really great show.

Spookey Ruben boasted three opening bands. The first was Lengthy List of Lovers, whose dream came true opening for their idol and biggest influence. Consisting of Alyson Fun on vocals, synth and cymbal, and Daniel Brard on guitar and occasional vocals, they make a lovely pair who have managed to roll their musical influences into a sunshine-y music that puts a smile on your face. They discovered Spookey Ruben about three years ago, and they measure their musical influences as 50% Spookey, 25% Talking Heads and 25% Beach Boys. It is, in fact, an obscure lyric of The Beach Boys that gave Lengthy List of Lovers their name.

LLL played a fun techno dance number about faking your own death. They offered a prize for the best dancer, which contained only things that were red and white, such as cinnamon hearts, vintage peppermint scratch-and-sniff stickers, and Daniel's kazoo from when he was six. The red and white theme was to match their outfits, as Lengthy List of Lovers wears all white with red accessories (inspired by Talking Heads). Even the Lengthy List of Lovers Lamp is red.

Then they played another number featuring a chorus of “Take your medicine, don’t fall down,” which was based on a riff about epilepsy. Alyson left the stage with her tambourine in the last section of the song, walking around the floor and calling for everyone to sing along. Daniel stopped playing his guitar so he could flip it over to reveal the line written in electrical tape on the back. Lengthy List of Lovers is adorable, genuine and original. Even with a drum machine, they have an organic sound that adds flavour to their electric music and trundling guitar. Check back on Backstage Vancouver for another concert by Lengthy List of Lovers, coming up on Saturday 20 June at the Purple Crab with Quite Testy..."
