With grainy black and white artwork, a title I didn't think much of, and a distinctly 1980s feel - I thought I was going to hate this second offering from Patrick Cleandenim. And so I eat my words and remember the old saying, 'You should never judge a book by its cover' - or in this case, a CD.

Because 'Orange Moonbeam Floorshow' is actually rather delicious. Full of bubbly synths, sweeping slices of orchestral electro tunes, and more than its fair share of funky beats, this album is a 1980s nostalgia trip is ever there was one. And sometimes thats exactly what's called for. With production values hinting at old classics from Kraftwerk and Madonna, and gems like 'Little Baby Party' and 'In Your Mind' lifting the mood skywards, Patrick's perfected the recipe for pop.

If you missed the 80s the first time round, this'll give you a modern take on the decade of excess. And I bet Mums will love it, too.

Polished NYC crooner joins the retro-synth goldrush

Two years after praise for his jazzy, orchestral debut, this young New Yorker takes a sharp swerve into suave electro-pop. The aching voice and urbane lyrics remain as Gatsby-esque as before ("There is no sound louder than high heels on cobblestones"), but the chilly synth-funk arrangements are pure high-end 1980s. "Stage Fright" could be Rufus Wainwright tackling A-Ha's "The Living Daylights" while "City Lights" sounds like New Order covering Landscape's "Einstein A Go Go". Overall,  Cleandenim brilliantly evokes that sense of walking Antwerp in a raincoat, circa 1982.

Mike Wolf, editor of Time Out NY talks on WNYC's Soundcheck about what acts will emerge from CMJ unforgotten. According to Wolf, "embarassingly talented" Patrick Cleandenim is a likely contender.
