Current mood:  optimistic
I'm trying to capture as many comments on this post as possible. For every comment received in September, I will pledge to raise £1 for the Burma relief. This is a challenge for all of us: For me personally, I'm trying to prove to myself that all that I need to make a difference is what is in my hand, and the few minutes it took to capture this first draft. But it's not about me, your challenge is to capture any thoughts buzzing through your mind that this isn't worth it, and squash it. People really need our help.

So that's three things:

1) Read the poem
2) Watch the video ('My Story' by Jahaziel)
3) Leave a comment (your comment should include at LEAST one of the following, an idea for how to raise the money, a promise to copy and paste this blog in your own blog, a relevant poem of your own.)

If every one captures the vision and does their bit, we can all make a difference
Thank you and much Love!!!

CAPTCHA

I guess
you have to spend a moment
solving a CAPTCHA to make friends
in the world of MySpace et al...

outside cyberspace, beyond a fingertip's shadow shift,
the inverse is true: you have to capture moments with a friend,
and reSolvE to hold on them.

In either case failing to be case sensitive,
or leaving too much space between various characters
prevents or ends the friendship,

Hi there,

"If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter." a quote I shared with my (excellent) National Youth Theatre creative writing class a couple of weeks back, they were working on editing. It's also fitting for this month's Well I'll Be, the [verb]swish newsletter; I've had a long time to write it, hopefully it's extra short and sweet:
Well I'll Be...

NODDING...
my head to me debut album! The album's called Cool of The Day. We finished post-production last Friday at Masterpiece Studios in Fulham. It's been 3 years in the making and it feels good that the nodding isn't just for the rhythm - we ( Hollerzz [producer], and Al [engineer]) really love it! Hope you will too, it's out later this year.

LAYING...
digital brick, check out the new myspace profile I put together, it pops, no? New tracks up too!

GIVING...
away a free download sample of the forthcoming Selected Swishes, (2nd edition). Features new contributions from editor, James Crooke, new images and funky matte cover designed by Lakwena Suit.
GET THE FREE DIGITAL SAMPLE
PRE-ORDER THE FULL BOOK

ASKING...
for your help. Big love to the helpers, investors, contributors and good folks who've helped us get this far. But part of the reason this email is late, is 'cause we're literally run off our feet with stuff to do! and we expect be until the album is out later on this year. We'd love to hear from you - period - but especially if your handy with a camera or into video editing, OR if your interested in helping out on the street team, OR are you a stylist, artwork creative, marketing type, or just wanna help out in some other way? - if you know any of the above... send your/their deets along to info at verbswish dot com. We'd also like to hear from all the promoters out there, with cool and interesting gigs. So spread the word!

APPEARING...
at the Furnace, again! Good people, 7 months in, I'm still loving their vibe. This time at the Blithe Spirit in Balham, where I'll be going bac-to-back with 6 poets (including the excellent Phil Grieve) in a piece called poetry in motion. The night also features em-cee/producer Testament (prior collabs - Corinne Baliey-Rae, Shlomo, Soweto Kinch).
Time: Wednesday 27th August, Doors 7pm, Show 8pm
Place: Blithe Spirit, Balham High Road
Directions: http://www.thefurnaceuk.com/map.htm

Ok I said it'd be short,
more in September !

So on the [verb]swish page you now stream a preview of 'Dawn Yawns' ft. the excellent Abimaro.

Dawn Yawns is part of the uniquely styled national PAUSE Tour, that we'll be on from September. www.myspace.com/pausetour

So I'm kind of into blue now. I think they call it Gainsboro, or dark slate blue to you and me. Anyhow I like the way it pops on black so I've designed a new myspace profile around it. www.myspace.com/theverbswish. Let me know what you reckon.

Also features the new music influences collage I threw together. Wasn't easy picking just a handful, but to quote Radiohead's Thom Yorke
"If people have been really affected by something, I think they need to know the source you got it from, because otherwise you're pretending that it came from nowhere when it didn't, sort of thing."

Ok, so here's the confession. Inside me there is a DJ trapped waiting to get out, I like radio, but on the real, I cant' really find many shows I love, so here's how it's gonna work: From time to time I'll post the play list here and at verbswish.com:

At the moment this is…
(1) Partly me spinning records for me,  and partly me giving you the heads up on what we like sonically over here at TRANSTATIC.
(2)If you'd like to actually hear the set for yourself - holler.
(3) If enough people do (2) then we'll put out the show, if not I'll revert to (1:)

Session 1 (27/02/08)

Robot Rock / Oh Yeah - Daft Punk (Alive 2007)
Love Revolution - Lenny Kravitz (Love Revolution)
To know Him is to love Him - Amy Winehouse (Live session)
Wordplay - Jason Mraz (Mr A-Z.)
That's the way of the world - Dwele (Interpretations)
1983 , Flying Lotus (1983)
The Hype, NSM - (Brownswood Bubblers)
Cryin Out - Trip Lee (If They Only Knew)
Hands Up - DJ Premier (Hip-Hop Instrumentals Vol. 3)
Brazillian Groove [Instrumental] - Jay Dee
The Chronicles (I Will Always Love H.E.R)
Not A Slave - J.R (Life By Stereo )

Yes, that is correct spelling, I really meant to say 'daze'. Such is the euphoria after this weekend's off-the-handle celebrations for the launch of record label and my life into its 26th orbit of the calendar. Was joined by the fabulous Abimaro for a joint b'day celebration that I won't forget in a hurry. Great people, great vibe, nuff love. Big up's to all the acts: hang-tight Poet Michaela who soldieried it all the way down from Brum to be there. Plus James Crooke, what can I say, "dude!", watch out for him, had the crowd pulling up his acoustic brit pop (not something you see every day) - such a dark horse he leaves charcoal hoof prints - trust. Asah Shabazz blessed the mic with some awesome flows, doubtless from the same breed of stallions as James.

In all, a beautiful start for TRANSTATIC. God willing we'll do it all again in a couple months, don't sleep.

..> ..>

Q: Was there ever a defining moment in your life that made you want to become a spoken word artist?
Not really, apart from realising that its the lowest common denominator
in lyricism... the opportunity to stay true to myself and write songs, poems, monologues, comedy, raps. My eyes were definitely opened to possibilities by the different energies of local artists around at the time I started out [doing spoken word] in 2002: shortMAN, Phenzwaan and others.

Q: Who or what are your greatest artistic influences?
[In no particular order] Stevie, MJ, Mos Def, Lauryn (rasp), Spike Lee (craft), Pacino (gravitas), Robin Williams (breadth), Jerry Seinfeld (craft), Bach (craft), Lewis (clarity), Kipling (If), Jesus Christ, Sesame Street (seriously), Danny Bedingfield (craft), Gil Scott Heron (candour)... I could go on

Q: How important a role does your background, cultural or otherwise play in your work?
I guess all that can be heard in the foreground of my stuff has a big backdrop in diversity... working in theatre at an early age, computers, promotions. So yeah its an important part, though Im not really into the typical cultural 'rootsy' stuff... at least not right now. Most of the work on my album is framed through my particular worldview over the last 3/4 years.. everything beyond that has some bearing but I see it quite dimly.

Q: Favourite fruit?
Mango

Q: Do you have any rituals or routines that help you write and memorise verses?
An ipod, a pair of asics and some crisp morning air never hurt... I should know - I never stay commited to my jogging schedule. Nah seriously, I put them in audio form and listen to em.. and sometimes its just plain old rote memory work... glamarous huh?

Q: Musical instrument you wish you played?
Keys.

Q: Who on the UK live music and spoken word scene has grabbed your attention recently/one to watch?
Abimaro Suit... definitely one to keep on your radar.... uh.. Sister Jones, Taylor Lane, Hollerzz, Zac Stanley... how long you got? (lol) watch this space for the ensemble I'll be leading.. we should be gigging together soon

Q: Favourite super power?
when i was coming up it was superted and spotty.. remember them?

Q: What was the last good book you read?
Screwtape letters by C.S Lewis

Q: Name one venue or event you really enjoyed playing and why?
A swish summer nights dream last year at the EP launch.. because.. I got a chance to programme acts that I think are really deserving in a historic venue... made more special cos I dont know when I'll have the opportunity to do it again

Q: Most overrated virtue? Most underrated virtue?
hmm..If you can overrate a virtue theres a good chance that its actually a vice masquerading as a virtue. Ironically, humility- which is often misunderstood as 'low self esteem'- was, is and will continue to be underrated as a virtue

Q: Favourite or most overused word in your vocab?
swish - I like to think of it as a favourite

Q: Name one under-appreciated artist from each of the following:

Film?: I quite like Sophie Clements work, lots of rhythm and timing: Check out her vid 'Kithchen Test'

Music?: Mr J. Mederios.. I've talked about his work before.. not just cos hes gifted theres no shortage of gifted folks.. but he's gotta a lot of heart and out of that abundance he speaks a lot of light. that said, I dont think he'll be slept on for too much longer... his debut is out July 24th on Rawkus records.. 'Of Gods and Girls' go get it lemme know what you think.

Literature?: C.S Lewis.. by country miles one of the clearest thinkers this country produced in the 20th century but still neglected by too many.

Q: What's next for [verb]swish?
Wrapping up the debut album.. for release early 2008. Planning stuff with my manager. Touring with PAUSE, a night of theatre spoken word and music touring uni's from september, and more immeadiately following your show on the 19th of July @ the play bar (plug plug) I'm in need of a summer uplift (plug plug) I aim to catch a plane out to someplace hot and laze about for a few days with some books and headphones... I might do some reading and listen to some music aswell.

Q: A line from a song that describes how you are feeling right now?
"Why did I think that I could escape the Truth, you dont change - I change toward you" sung by Taylor Lane on Slight Aside.

At least thats how it played out at10am this morning. The opening address at the Music Manifesto went to yours truly.  I came back at 6pm and encountered the iconic Hugh Masekela leading Jazz Jamaica All Stars in a lovely set. superb musician, superb spoken word artist... and all superb arrangements from Jason Yarde if you ever get the chance to see this show live... go.

Couldnt help but feel, that it was fitting that a virtual unknown (me) be first up to bat.... and Hugh be the last to knock it out the park.. and knock it out the park he did.
