I've been a KISS fan since I was a kid and now KISS and Ace release their albums and so close together. Is that Daja Vu or What?
So let's begin with KISS' Sonic Boom!
The cover art is nestalgic to KISS' 1976 album Rock and Roll Over. Modern Day Delilah is the wrong song for KISS to be pushing on the radio but it is still one of Paul Stanley's better works. The album is full of Tommy Thayer impersonations of Ace's guitar work. The number 5 track "Stand" has a "God Gave Rock and Roll To You II" feel. The weakest track of the album is "Hot and Cold," Gene Simmons' lyrics are lack luster at best here. Eric Singer makes his studio vocal debut here with "All For the Glory" and he's doing his best to sound like Peter Criss' voice but the song's not bad. But the only track that I feel is ment to "piss" classic KISS Fans off is Tommy Thayer's vocal debut "When Lightning Strikes." Not only his guitar work is not original but he's trying to sound like Ace vocally AND on a song that has the feel of Ace's "Shock Me."
This Album musically should have been done with the original line up. KISS wasted time on Psycho Circus with the wrong guys to make that crap. This album is too good for the current line-up of KISS. So yes I recommend buying Sonic Boom.
Next Album:
After the long awaited time us Ace Frehley fans had to wait for the next Ace creation "Anomaly" finally satisfies many. Or Does it?! For me it's Ace's reflection on some of his life like the Track "A Little Below The Angels."
Ace did show no growth as a musician here on this album but when you are that good at expressing yourself on the guitar there is nowhere else to go but lyrically on some of the songs I admit he could have done better. The best song on the Album I feel is "Outer Space" and I might add that some of the songs on this album Ace uses drop D tuning which is kind of rare for Ace but he still loves half step down!
For Ace and his works I still put this album up there next to his Comet stuff. This is a great album that was entirely done on Pro Tools and the packaging could have been better in a standard jewel case instead of just cardboard but you can make a pyramid out of the package so, cool!
This Album is not up there with Ace's 1978 solo album but it is still great but I have to say that KISS' Sonic Boom wins this one just because Ace's song writing could still be better lyrically but as a guitar player Tommy can't touch him and KISS has realized that their sound is nothing without Ace's guitar so yes Tommy you are doing good at playing someone elses licks!!..........................Jason E.
