Spartanburg singer finds new band was the punch she needed all along
Getting it right by Wayne Bledsoe for the Knoxville News Sentinel
When Brandy Lindsey was putting together her band the Punch a little over a year ago, she knew when the mix was just right.
"With this band, everything they do makes me smile or laugh or cry or just react in some real way," says Lindsey in a telephone call from her home in Spartanburg, S.C.
The music that Brandy Lindsey and the Punch perform is a combination of Americana and pop with a little country and rhythm and blues blended in. It's like being in a honky-tonk or a greasy rock club that isn't embarrassed to serve good wine along with Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Lindsey says she got her start as a singer about 15 years ago when she and a friend decided to visit a Spartanburg band called Pineapple Drive.
"One of my friends was friends with the band and (they) were just hanging out and they were jamming," says Lindsey. "When they took a break and went upstairs my friend and I got on the microphone just to be silly. When they came back downstairs they handed me some lyrics and told me to sing along."
Suddenly, Lindsey, who had never sung more than in school music class, and never as a soloist, was a vocalist.
However, she eventually she got tired of just singing the band's songs and started writing some of her own.
"I just wanted something from a female perspective," she says. "Now that's the part I really enjoy - the songwriting."
Lindsey ended up marrying Eric Lindsey, the bass player with Pineapple Drive, and the two provided the core of a group that went through numerous name changes and lineups over the next several years.
"I think we first changed it to Meteor Macaroni," she says. "We had some really bad band names."
The Punch came together after Lindsey released a solo disc three years ago.
"I just took some songs that I had written that didn't really fit with the band," she says. "When it was finished I could see that was the direction I really wanted to go."
The previous efforts had been rock with a capital "R."
"I could be pouring my heart on on stage, but I'd be screaming it out," says Lindsey. "I didn't dislike it. It just wasn't me."
Lindsey's solo effort was far more subtle and concentrated more on the melody. She and Eric began looking for like-minded musicians.
The duo had found guitarist Scott Hart and drummer Kevin Heuer and (recently) keyboardist Wilson Warren. While the group's sound is not a recreation of any of the members' influences, it's a mixture of those influences.
"We love the old country music and Motown and pop - and by that I mean the Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann kind of pop, and the pop songs from the 1960s," says Lindsey.
In 2008, the group released the EP "Songs We Know."
She says that, rather than wait until the group could finish an entire album, she and the band wanted something to represent what the group sounds like immediately. But there's little doubt that the band will record a complete album in the future.
"Everybody has faith in the music," she says. "We are all older and we've all played in various bands through the years and we know it's always a pipe dream, but we have so much fun!"

By Chris Shipman For the Herald-Journal
In 1993, as a joke, a 20-year-old Brandy Lindsey got up to sing one night in her friend and future husband's band.
"I knew I could carry a tune before that but never really thought of myself as a singer," she said. "But I was bitten by it that night."
Since then, she has made music her life. She learned to play guitar and write songs and has performed in bands and as a solo act.
"It was the best accident that's ever happened," she said.
She was performing in a band called Peephole for about four years when she decided to go solo. She recorded an album titled "Who Am I This Time?" and formed her current band in 2006 while promoting the CD.
"The band was put together to promote the solo album," she said. "But we clicked so well, we decided to give the band a name. They are the backbone of the group." She and the band are now working on a demo.
Brandy Lindsey and the Punch are Lindsey (singer, songwriter, acoustic guitar), Scott Hart (electric guitar), Kevin Hewer (drums) and Eric Lindsey (bass).
Lindsey described their sound as "Americana rock, mostly upbeat with a hint of country." She said fans of the Pretenders and Tom Petty would enjoy their show.
Stephen Long, director of The Showroom, said Lindsey "is one of those musicians who seems to draw from a lot of sources but doesn't try to copy from anybody."
"She has a great, soulful voice," Long said. "And she is well respected in the Spartanburg music scene. She represents the kind of spirit we like to see in Spartanburg.
"She wants to make something happen here, and she is an inspiration to other artists in Spartanburg."
"We usually have musicians come out to see us," Lindsey said, "but it seems like we have new fans after every show. Hopefully, people will appreciate what we do by keeping the music original."

Not only bolstering the local music scene by filling area venues with a variety of styles and unique approaches, several Spartanburg artists made it into the studio with fresh and creative ideas, emerging with CDs that not only signify the robust state of local music talent, but epitomize our local musical heritage and illuminate its future.
Here in no particular order are the five most noteworthy recordings Spartanburg musicians released in 2006:
David Ezell, "The Back Shop Live"; Perhaps the most anticipated local release of the year, Ezell finally appeased longtime fans, and allured those curious about his music with a CD of original music recorded during a performance at The Back Shop, literally a private back shop utilized for house concerts. The atmosphere of the performance and the strength of Ezell's songs and voice successfully encapsulate an artist who has been active in the region for nearly four decades. Ezell has influenced generations of Spartanburg songwriters, and the new CD demonstrates effectively why this musical jewel is so prized. Visit www.davidezell.net for more information.
Marc Higgins Band, "Change Is Good" An original Spartanburg act with musical momentum, Marc Higgins Band released its debut during the summer, striking powerfully with songs such as "Subway Song" and "I Know What You Know." But perhaps even more impressive is the group's rapid progression in performance and prolific production. With vocalist and guitarist Marc Higgins at the helm, the group has practically completed its follow-up, "Slow Moving Train," due out as early as January, and sessions for that album reveal songs that not only assert the band's solidifying sonic identity, but also continue to unfold as-yet-unseen areas of lyrical and melodic explorations. Visit www.marchiggins band.com for more information.
Brandy Lindsey, "Who Am I This Time" Despite the title, Lindsey obviously knows exactly who she is. Possessing an extraordinary voice, Lindsey has been exciting to watch since she began honing her craft in the early 1990s. On her newest CD, her first solo effort, she has perfected the means to utilize her immense vocal range and versatility in a way that is both subtle and powerful. Visit www.brandylindsey. com for more information.
The Antibodies, "Senses" Crafted by a quartet of seasoned local musicians who have been associated musically for nearly 20 years, perhaps what's most striking about "Senses" is that it sounds so fresh. Along with the freshness, however, the band's experience shines through in the sureness of its musical chemistry, as well as its intelligent approach to crafting intriguing songs. Visit www.myspace.com/ antibodiestheband for more information.
Headsnap, "To Phoenix and Back" Representing the top of the class of Spartanburg's vibrant hard-rocking counterculture, Headsnap hit the scene full-throttle with this CD. Although the album has all the ultra-tight guitar and rhythm section crunch and punch you might expect, vocalist Ricky Shuler's compelling vocal melodies set Headsnap apart, as does the band's ability to explore inventive musical twists and turns without overindulging.
