About Tools of War

Co-founded by Jorge "Pop Master Fabel" Pabon and Christie Z-Pabon, Tools of War was named with the idea that there are many "tools" one can use in competing/battling within Hip Hop culture: turntables, microphones, paint, one’s body, and especially one’s voice (and so on)! Although the name might appear aggressive, the intent behind it’s use is actually to inform and educate people regarding not only Hip Hop but many other social and political issues. As we grow, we are finding that it has also become a forum for voicing opinions and sharing ideas which might help in unifying and uplifting people all over the world. Saturday, September 19, 2009
"Let me start by saying that this isn't just about me, this is about pioneering and legendary DJs from Philadelphia who are not being recognized.

Just as everyone knows that Hip Hop's founding fathers are Kool DJ Herc, Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash from the Bronx - it is common knowledge that DJ Jazzy Jeff and myself are the most famous Hip Hop DJ legends from Philadelphia.

When the first Philly DJ Day took place in 2008, I was invited to attend and help celebrate its launch. DJs from every decade in Philadelphia Hip Hop history attended and many group photos were taken of us to commemorate this day of unity.

Around the beginning of 2009, the organizers of Philly DJ Day received a proclamation, signed by the Mayor of Philadelphia, confirming an official Philly DJ Day to be celebrated annually. They proudly announced it. I was excited to read it myself!

To my surprise, my name was left off the proclamation though some of my friends were included...and was I naturally upset! DJs included on the first document included DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ AM (Rest in Peace), DJ Drama, Schoolly D, ?uest Love, King Britt and Rich Medina.

When I called Philly DJ Day to let them know about this error, they had not noticed that my name had been left out. They claimed that it was a typo or some mistake and that they would work on it. I wondered how something so important and final could be released and signed without review or edits.

By September 2009, the organizers said they finally fixed the problem, but when I viewed the updated document, it felt like my name was just thrown in for "honorable mention" and they changed the honorees around. At this point, I felt the second version aimed at pacifying me was more insulting than the first!

Please view both versions of the Philly DJ Proclamation at myspace.com/djcashmoney12

I wondered why other DJ legends weren't included on either document like the original DJ Spinbad, Lady B, Grandmaster Nell, DJ Miz, Too Tuff, Cosmic Kev, DJ Ran, Grand Wizzard Rasheen, Tat Money, Lightning Rich, Josh Wink and the list goes on!

There are so many DJs who trail blazed!  Maybe it would have been better to just call it Philly DJ Day, not name anyone and have it be all inclusive. However, if the more accomplished DJs were to be highlighted, it would have been better that we all sat down had a chance to offer our input.

If the proper history of the Philly DJ is not going to be told, it's better not to do it at all. I give Philly DJ Day an A+ for effort but an F for history.

Yet Philly DJ Day continues to include my likeness on their website knowing that I am not happy with the organization and therefore I do not support it. When the Philly DJ Day organizers sent DMC (the longest running, most legendary DJ competition) a sponsorship proposal for 2009, which included my photo, they were turned down because Philly DJ Day wasn't even recognizing the only DMC Champion from Philly! DMC supports me 100%!

Thus, some may want to say that I am being egotistical or hard to deal with for standing up for what is right but I won't be written out of history. I have been silent far too long about the cliquishness that goes down in this city. I tour all over the world repping Philly to the fullest. The fact that I won the DJ World DJ Championship in 1988 and am the only DJ to bring this title to Philly speaks volumes. I was also inducted into the Technics/DMC Hall of Fame.

A great DJ is not made overnight! You have to put in time, blood, sweat and tears.  You become known as a legend from your fans and fellow DJ's. I didn't give myself these titles, other people did. Rightfully so, I've earned my place in history. It's like discussing Philadelphia basketball and never mentioning Dr. J.

I would suggest that the organizers start over, regroup, sit down with the true legends and get it right."

Sincerely,
DJ Cash Money

DMC Regional Battles

DJs battle solo - showcase style (not head to head). Each DJ will perform a 2 min. elimination routine. If a DJ is selected for the top six regional Finalists, he or she must perform a 6 min. routine. We are using Technic turntables and Rane TTM 56 mixers. DJs can use any needles they favor. DJ computer programs are not permitted in this battle. Each DJ must bring his/her own headphones, slipmats, needles, records, etc. Competitors must be bona-fide nationals of the USA or be able to prove that they have resided in the USA for a minimum of 6 years. Monday, June 29, 2009
Peace everyone and thanks for all who supported the 2009 DMC West Coast Regional and USA Team Battles on Sat. June 27 @ Sabor Lounge in Los Angeles!

I want to thank all the die hard battle djs who travel to the battles to compete. The hype that DJs are flying in from all parts of the US is so exciting and says so much about what the DMC battles mean to them! You also give me hope for the future of DMC USA battles – without you competing, there wouldn’t be a battle!

It was great to be in LA again and see old friends like DJ Swamp, Spryte, D-Styles, Gio, P-Trix, Greg Needlz (who is now with Guitar Center) and his lovely wife Malena,  Janice, Sweepy (RSC), Armani, Destin,  DJ Raichous, plus meet some new friends too like Charles from Vestax/Stokyo, Manny Munoz the promoter, Phillip Le from Skratchworx, Killa Jewel etc.

Malena & Greg Needlz:

Here’s who came to battle in the West Coast Regional

DJ Lifted (Vallejo, CA), Mista-B (San Francisco, CA ), DJ J.P. GUNNz (Seattle, WA), Juyadek (Huntington Beach) , SHMEEZE (Fountain Valley, CA), d187....aka johny dee (Moreno Valley, CA), 1Nemcis (Glendale, LA),  Hot Tub (El Paso  TX), DJ CajunFrog (Venice, CA), Scratchmaster Joe (Seattle), PriMO (San Francisco, CA), DJ T-WAX (Phoenix, AZ), Astonish (Phoenix, AZ), Etronik (Pico Rivera CA), Lodus (Norwalk CA)

Judges for the Elims round and the Finals included: DJ Swamp (1996 DMC US Champ), DJ P-Trix (99 DMC US Champ), Killa Jewel and D-Styles!!!!

Host: Gio + Judges: D-Styles, Killa Jewel and P-Trix

DJ Swamp wore his jacket!!!!

Host for most of the evening was Gio (aka DJ Ace) who did a wonderful job – completely on the volunteer tip) and was a natural on the mic!!!! I want to thank everyone who volunteered to judge, host, etc.  There hasn’t been a battle in LA and while this battle could have been more polished, I have to say that the community effort to bring the battle to Los Angeles, (with very little local sponsorship) is extremely commendable so I gotta give it to Manny Munoz & his crew for pulling it off!

Competitors ranking in the 09 DMC West Coast Elims
1.    Lodus
2.    Etronik
3.    Mista-B
4.    Shmeeze
5.    1Nemcis
6.    Astonish

7.    Tied: Scratch Master Joe and J.P. Gunnz (both out of Seattle too)
8.    Cajun Frog
9.    Tied: PriMO and Juyadek

I listed everyone who scored simply to encourage those who didn’t make the top 6 but also to show how varied the judging was.

Top 6 of the 2009 DMC West Coast Finals: I would love to give you a play by play but am not verbally or technically equipped (or authorized LOL)  to do so but I hope the DJs will post their own descriptions up. Interestingly enough, each of the 6 DJs received favor from the judges (which is not always the case) so I’ll list the top 6 in the order they placed (once again to encourage). In the top 3, each had just a crucial one point difference!

2009 DMC West Coast Champ: SHMEEZE

He blazed up from 4th place in the Elims to take the whole thing!!!
Congratulations Shmeeze!!!!

DMC 2009 USA Team Battle Results

Here’s who entered including the first all woman team to enter a DJ Battle – in possibly ever – if anyone knows different please let me know but this was history and Celskiii and Deeandroid hung in there against more team battle experienced crews and took third!!!! God willing, they inspired everyone, including more women, to get with the program!

Before the teams, Gio and D-Styles had to cut out so so Swamp's guest, Andrew volunteered to host. He did pretty well in light of the fact – but I have to apologize for how he introduced The Deuce when they placed. I didn’t know that he said something about them being cute and Asian, until Celskii told me later. I truly apologize for that, I didn’t register him as saying it  and that’s not cool because they did truly rock and his intro came off as demeaning – esp. for history making women!

All 4 Teams in the 2009 DMC USA Team Finals:

The Deuce (Celskiii and Deeandroid)
Battlestar (Turbulence & Phonics)
Sofa King Dope (Image & CPlus)
The Angry Exs (Lodus & Etronik)

SOFA KING DOPE: DJ Imagefromthewood & DJ CPlus

Hawthorne CA: myspace.com/imagefromthewood

Here’s how the scoring went down with judges:
P-Trix, Spryte, DJ Swamp and Killa Jewel!

The DEUCE: DJ Celskiii & DJ Deeandroid took third place!
Canyon CA & Daly City CA myspace.com/celskiiianddeeandroid

THE ANGRY EXS: Etronik & Lodus took 2nd

* Yes, it was announced that The Deuce came in second and The Angry Exs took 3rd but yesterday morning, I was studying the score sheets and re-checked the tally on the scores again. I apologize profusely for the confusion and can't exactly pinpoint how I messed this up but

Here’s exactly how the scores looked:  I can jpg them and post them if anyone needs further proof.  Normally each judge writes in a Top 3  so – three of them did

Judge # 1
1.    Battlestar
2.    Angry Exs
3.    The Deuce

Judge # 2
1.    The Angry Exs
2.    Battlestar
3.    The Deuce

Judge # 3
1.    The Deuce
2.    Battlestar
3.    The Angry Exs

Judge # 4’s sheet looked like this (no explicit list of top 3, just numbers next to names to rank)

4 Sofa King Dope
1 Battlestar
3 The Deuce
2 The Angry Exs

I think this was the score sheet that possibly led to some confusion and mistakes. But it could also be that I was delirious from traveling all day. Whatever the reason, I own up to this mistake, as embarrassing as it is and can only chalk it up to unintentional human error.  I wish all four teams could win 1st!! I sincerely apologize that this mistake was made and as soon as I landed last night in NYC, I called Celskiii and explained everything and apologized before I called Lodus to let him know that The Angry Exs came in 2nd.

PS: This morning I went over the scores from the solo battle (with dread in my heart that God forbid I messed anything up there) and I am happy to announce that the tally was exactly how the host announced it on Saturday night!

Thanks to DJ Raichous and Derrick who provided the sounds for the opening hour and intermissions (and they probably were rocking after I left!) Thanks to promoter Manny Munoz of Bomb & Systems for making it possible for Los Angeles to have a DMC Battle!

Thanks to Bernadette Desuasido - Producer for The Filipino Channel (Yoga Frog’s cousin) who covered the event  3 channels will be broadcast their coverage:  ANC (24 hour news channel), MYX (Music Channel) and TFC (the biggest Filipino Network in the World!)  ANC & TFC will broadcast:  Balitang America (Daily News Program) & Adobo Nation (Lifestyle / Current Affairs Magazine Show) and MYX - Built From Skratch.

Especial thanks to DJ Etronik who was so determined to have the DMC West Coast held in Los Angeles that he set about finding promoters to see who could do the job (since he only wanted to battle and not be the promoter too - so there was no conflicts of interest). Just like Donnie Dee in TX and Tony Skratchere in New Orleans, Etronik is one of the DJs who has decided to take matters in his own hands and try to get a battle to go down in his city.  Had he been the promoter, he would have outdone himself. I sincerely thank him (and everyone else should too) for his drive to make the battle happen in LA.

Thanks to my BFF Janice who chauffered me around (took me to the airport 3x), let me stay over and handled the door at the venue for awhile.

I had a great time and apologize that I had to rush off to catch my flight (which I missed anyhow since I took everything but my backpack with ID in it…ugh!) I wish I could have stayed and vibed with everyone longer!

Sunday, June 14, 2009
Peace everyone!

Thanks to everyone came through and supported on Saturday, June 13!
Amazing for NYC - we had 71 advance tickets sold! Most people just buy at the door. And about 250 or so in attendance!!!

Thanks to Fingaz for keeping the energy high and the crowd entertained! Thanks to Marilyn for helping sort out the DJs - which battle they were in - whether they were going on the high set up or the lower one, getting judges scores and more! I couldn't have done it without her!

Spictakular opened up the show party rocking (did not have one clean version of any song in his laptop LOL) and later on during a break the legendary DJ Jazzy Jay rocked a little and so did Fatfingaz. Rob Swift closed out the show with a showcase dedicated to the Boricuas in honor of the Puerto Rican Day parade (today, Sunday).

Swan...John Swan vs DJ Supreme
DJ Solo vs SPS

Round 3

DJ Supreme vs DJ SPS

Champion:

DJ Supreme - 1991 NMS/Superman Champ & former DJ for Lauren Hill (and 2009 Gong DJ Battle New York champ. Supreme won the Rane SL 3, some shwag from Qbert Skratch University an a 1 yr subscription to QSU + he's headed to London for the 2009 DMC World DJ Championships for Sept. 11 & 12! I'd like to see him vs. Nelson.

3 DJ Schools sponsored: Qbert Skratch University, Dubspot and Scratch DJ Academy and I think the latter two had a strong student presence to cheer on instructors in the battle! The latter two also gave away classes!

There were women there again too! Not sure where they come from but it's very cool that they pay to get in like everyone else and enjoy the show! Marilyn & I were happy that it was more than us & DJ Courtney :)

I can't give the play by plays but I hope top DJs post what their routines consisted of and I hope people post reviews of the routines, comments, opinions, etc.

Thanks to everyone who battled, judged, rocked, attended, spectated and extreme thanks also to Justin & Carlso (Fat Fingaz Jr) from DJ Pro Audio for bringing in the equipment (they rent & repair 1200s and more) http://www.djproaudio.com. They are based in Brooklyn.

Mark Carranceja from noisemakermedia.com filmed the battles on his HD camera! mcarranceja@noisemakermedia.com. He documented the event as a favor for me. http://www.myspace.com/noisemakermedia - he does great work and has a great price for day long video shoots! Hit him up!

Please be sure to support the sponsors who support the battles you love!

I think the battle scene is looking better all the time!

Also - Jazzy Jay mentioned the TV Pilot being filmed at Santos on June 18th - so be sure to rsvp if you are going (can't just show up). Some of the people from the show were there at the battle and will likely invite select Djs from the DMC East Coast & Supremacy to audition so check your email just in case.

PEACE!!!!
Christie
