When I first read Jason Henninger's brilliant "tutorial" How to Lie About Books earlier this year, I laughed so hard I cried! It was one of the most entertaining and relatable things I'd come across in quite some time. I bookmarked the article, shared it with many, even Tweeted about it several times.
Well, not only did I find out that the talented Mr. Henninger was a long-time fan of mine, but also he had come to several of my concerts in Hollywood, and asked if he could do an in-depth interview with me for Tor, the great science-fiction, fantasy literary blog.
Needless to say, I was thrilled.
What transpired was a two-hour phone conversation about everything from The Twilight Zone and spontaneous human combustion, to Count St. Germain and musical psychometry.
Jason had the fine task of whittling down our recorded interview into what has become a wonderful read called--
It's one of my favorites to date. Please enjoy, comment, and share this!!
Thank you so much Jason Henninger and all at Tor. xox

My dear Los Angeles! A perfect excuse for us to get together again--it's HALLOWEEN.
Join me and the legendary David J (Bauhaus) as we host the "Ghostly Equestrian Ball" Oct 31 at Bar Sinister in Hollywood.
I've been honored this year to not only host the now-infamous "Black Valentine's" party at Bar Sinister, but also was invited to perform with David for this elegant and sensual event.
If nothing else, an ideal opportunity to wield that black-leather riding crop again. (Like you need one..)
Expect some musical surprises in store particularly crafted for the night. I shall grace the stage about 11pm-ish. David to follow.
***Note to LA fans and friends: I will need a personal assistant/merch person that evening!! Come hang out with me, get backstage, meet the performers, free swag and free admission for you plus guest! The merch is set up in the same area as the concert, so you will not miss anything. If you would like to become an official "Malcontent" for Halloween please email: suspect (at) jilltracy dot com and put "LA assistant" as the subject. We need you!
yours. soon, Jill Tracy

Join me in DETROIT Oct 30 (the notorious "Devil's Night") for one of the most darkly compelling and sensual events I've been involved with this year.
DAMNED II is a dark fine arts exhibition and masquerade ball. A gathering of the most controversial artists from around the world. Including special guest artists Marilyn Manson and the legendary H.R. Giger! 140 artists in all.
I will be giving a special concert during the elegant masquerade ball! There is even a six-course aphrodisiac dinner. What more does one need?
Please visit the official website to read more about this truly unique and intriguing event. Make the effort to get to Detroit. This is a rare and important happening. I'm thrilled to be part of it.

After a sumptuous time last year performing at both Anne Rice's Halloween Ball, and House of Blues "Day of the Dead Festival" in New Orleans, I am excited to be returning again for the Halloween season!
Many thanks to the University of Louisiana (at Lafayette) for bringing me out for a special solo theater concert Weds, October 28 at the Ducrest-Gilfry Auditorium.
This will be Jill Tracy "recital-style!" I believe there will be a grand piano, plus trusty Roland at my disposal. So, expect the unexpected....whatever mood strikes me, that's where I'll go. The pure, uninhibited magic of the solo show.
You will hear some of my newer dark modern classical works in addition to songs from my albums. Some never-before-heard pieces! Lots of stories...
Hope to see you! The school is a short drive from New Orleans (about 2 hours away.)
***Just announced: There will be special comps for ARVLFC members at this concert! If you need more info, please leave your email in an comment and someone will contact you.
I am fortunate to be able to spend some days prior lurking amidst the French Quarter and Garden District. I will be in person for my screenings at the New Orleans Vampire Film Festival on Oct 25.
If you have any "must-see" NOLA suggestions, or song requests, post them here.
Please spread the word! Much appreciated.
Jill Tracy

I am fortunate to receive many beautiful notes from you. Although I simply do not have the time to reply to each and every one-—rest assured, I read every message personally. I even keep many of them in an online folder.
Often, a note will come through at “just the right time”...when I am feeling discouraged, lonely, frustrated, enduring the endless struggle of an artist’s life. (You all have saved me more than you realize!)
The words are beacons, your notes remind me “why I do what I do.”
There is no destination; it’s the journey, the adventure, the wonderment that matters, always. It is false and meaningless otherwise...
So, I’ve decided instead of having these recent treasures hide in my Inbox, it’s time to share them with the world. As a way not only to celebrate how you feel about my work, but also to honor you, your bravery, your imagination— your efforts to connect with me.
*How befitting to post this on the fortuitous day of 09/09/09.
Here is the first installment of the Jill Tracy “Mailbag:”
Jill,
I've been listening to 2 of your CDs on repeat all day today while I write--
The Bittersweet Constrain and Diabolical Streak. They are both amazing. Thank you for creating such captivating art.
Melissa Marr (New York Times best-selling author of Wicked Lovely and Fragile Eternity)
(Author Melissa Marr also posted about my music in her popular blog:) "Dear World, I am in love again--this time with Jill Tracy's music. *sighhhh*
My current Oh My I Am Obsessed is Jill Tracy. Regular blog readers know that I have to have the right sounds to write. Graveminder was lacking a full playlist (& yes, it will continue to evolve), but that evolution took the PERFECT turn this week when I queued up Jill Tracy..."
More mailbag:
Jill— I have decided to get your lyrics tattooed on my forearm. From your amazing song “Torture” : “For Desire is the cruelest pain.” No truer words have ever been spoken! Awesome! Thanks lady! Andrew B, Spokane WA
You are the music I have been waiting to hear all my life. Thank you for existing.
Stephanie (from Chicago)
Dear Jill, I just watched the short film “The Cat Piano,” produced and narrated by Nick Cave. The sexy feline heroine totally reminded me of you...she looks and even sounds like you! (This is a compliment! :) ) I had read somewhere that Nick Cave was a fan of your music, so I am wondering if the character was based on you. Seems appropriate. It was a really cool film.
Lady Denise, Brooklyn, NY
...a mortal male’s review:
I hear in all these reviews that you are an idol of “past times.” No, in fact when I hear your music, you are none other than a siren for the modern day man and woman.
Freedom is dark and scary and we all deal in our own way once we realize the extent of said freedom. Some run and scream, and some wrench down with all their might and tighten down those piano chords and draw blood. Most go completely Mad. But your music to me is as a painting with no bounds, no rules, nothing but what the artist can see. For that is life. We paint or sing a bit by bit everyday and in our minds, until it bursts forth in a chromatic spray of reality. Whether its in blood, paint, or music it does not matter. The fact is you have done so with your music. Congratulations...from a modern day Pollock, or fool, or whomever you may think me to be...
the malcontent artist Mr. Brock Farrington
If there is a more mesmerizing performer alive than Jill Tracy, I would be astonished to find them.
Troy DeVolld (via YouTube)
Miss Tracy —I just want to let you know what a huge inspiration you have been to me since I discovered your music. It’s spoken to me in ways you’ll never know, and has helped me through difficult times. I am working on a series of oil paintings, each one inspired by a different song of yours. I have been listening to your music exclusively while I paint. I hope to send you one as a gift someday. They would not exist without you.
John R, Austin TX
This music- the instruments, the tone, the voice- is so heart-breakingly beautiful. It makes me lament what passes for the majority of music in this day and age. When you put the latest pop piece of garbage next to Jill Tracy, you'll see the difference.
This isn't just sound, this is soul, this is the human condition.
XiaBranSinnach (via You Tube)
You are my new heroine, m' lady...
For me, your music is transportive. I absolutely love it... You're all I've been listening to for the last four days. Jeffrey L. George, D.M.A. Professor of Guitar Studies
School of Music University of Louisiana at Lafayette
Hiya Jill (if I may be so bold),
I spent a solid hour on your site the day I discovered it and was frankly in awe of your art, your mind, and your incredibly nimble powers to attract like very very few artists I've EVER run across. Still kinda shell-shocked but ready for another round...
You’re definitely a phenomenon onto yourself. You're a titan but the greatest asset of the giant is the noble act of reaching down every so often to find a smile.
Peace and Respect from Minneapolis,
Tim DeMillo

Thank you to everyone who made the Cambret Noir event in Hollywood such a beautiful night.
Violinist Paul Mercer flew in from Altanta for a surprise appearance---with such a quiet intimate audience, we were able to perform some rare instrumentals and improvisations (spontaneous musical combustions!)
There was such a strong specific energy in Citizen Smith that night, we played fragile, delicate pieces that you would never hear at a regular rock venue. I was thrilled for it. And so were the fans!
It was spectacular to have DJ Xian, Nicki Jaine and Reagan Remy rounding out the bill.
Please read Liz Ohanesian's interview with me in LA WEEKLY.

It's sensual, dark, evocative...I'm so excited to announce this show! Sheer bliss. Please don't miss this one. By any means necessary.
I personally invited two of my favorite female performers to join me for one special night, , Sunday August 16 at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco. ** NOTE: It's an early show. Doors at 7pm, show at 8pm. I play second. More info and tickets HERE:

We've all been traveling, touring, and engaged in other projects, so this is quite the rare opportunity to get us all in the same town, on the same stage together! (It took some wrangling.) Nicki Jaine rarely makes it to the West Coast, and this is her only scheduled show thus far. Please get there before 8pm so you don't miss her.
Now, to complete the magic, I just need YOU there- shining in the darkness...
More info and tickets HERE:
Special thanks to NOH Productions and Chad Savage.

For your aural pleasures, I have uploaded three new songs from The Bittersweet Constrain , plus a rare out-of print live track by popular demand!
Notes:
"I Can't Shake It"- has become a unifying anthem for struggling visionaries of all sorts. Refusing to forego your dreams and passions, when the clueless around you regard it as a sickness! "No medicine for this malady..."
Features moving strings by violinist Tony Cross and cellist Unwoman.
"The Water Flows So Slow"- a shimmering musical epic with Kenny Annis on sarod, Alex Nahas on Chapman Stick, Tony Cross, harmonium, and the brilliant percussion of Randy Odell. Much of track was improvised. I am quite proud of its lavish fragility and intensity.
"Petrified"- Why does that perfect moment EVER need to change? Why do we sabotage ourselves? "It's perfect just like this..." Love the interplay between my piano and Alex Nahas' Chapman Stick. And of course, the drumming of Randy Odell. Contrabass by Daniel Fabricant.
Click HERE to purchase The Bittersweet Constrain on CD Baby. The album is also available on Amazon, i-Tunes, and various other retailers.
"(Variations on) Paint It Black"- I have been receiving countless requests for this out-of-print live track. It has an interesting back story. It was never intended to be on the album at all--it rather wished itself into being.
During the 1995 sessions for my live solo demo, Quintessentially Unreal, engineer Christian Jones was getting me settled in at the grand piano. Surrounded by nothing but candlelight, a few pillows and talismans, I was sitting in the dark, amidst a strategically-placed collection of microphones.
I remember Christian saying "I'm getting levels in here, just play something." And so I began to improvise, unaware that he was even rolling tape, unaware of what I was actually playing. I channeled something classical, slightly Arabian, then the Rolling Stones visited my fingertips and the rest is history.
After nearly six minutes, Everyone's jaw in the control room dropped. "One thing is for certain, Christian exclaimed. "THAT is going on the record." And it's become my very favorite cut from Quintessentially Unreal. Pure authenticity. Pure captured magic. I have appreciated it's current rabid popularity again, and even broke into parts of it at a recent Knitting Factory gig.
Quintessentially Unreal is now out-of-print. Click HERE to to download the digital version from CD Baby. Downloads are also available on Amazon, i-Tunes, and various other retailers.
Thank you for listening.
