From the Talking Heads to Lightning Bolt, Providence, RI's tight-knit, diverse and loyal music scene and thriving art culture provided many a young, odd upstart with lodgings and inspiration. Public Assembly will host the first of a series of shows by performers who owe genesis and allegiance to the Ocean State. Curated by songwriter/producer Casey Holford.
THE EXILE OF PROVIDENCE Sunday May 31 2009 Public Assembly 70 North 6th St Brooklyn Back Room Doors 8pm 1st: Seabrook Power Plant 2nd: Ten Minute Turns 3rd: Outlines $7
Seabrook Power Plant, formed of brothers Brandon and Jared Seabrook on guitar/banjo and drums, and bassist Tom Blancarte, bring a rich musical background of punk, jazz, and klezmer to bear on their songs, which turn on a dime (to paraphrase their heroes the Minutemen) from dark and atmospheric to spastic and joyful. SPP live is an addling attack of bodyblows on top of hearty ticklings. The band's debut album will be released in 2009 on Loyal Label. Listen Here http://www.loyalabel.com "guitarist–banjo player Brandon Seabrook has made a name for himself applying the latter ax to avant-jazz and experimental contexts. His rousing trio Power Plant combines those aesthetics with gleeful rock bombast" - Time Out NY
Ten Minute Turns has a playful, collaborative, everything-often-including-the-kitchen-sink attitude about sound that's immediately evident to anyone with a pair of ears. Formed in 2006 between multi-instrumentalists Alan Foreman and Roger Mason, TMT is celebrating their third independent release and second full-length album, Leaving Robot City. Foreman and Mason are also notable in the field of animation, having worked on visuals, music, and sound for cult favorite shows like Home Movies and Three Delivery. Listen Here http://www.tenminuteturns.com “Visual and audio art go hand in hand with Brooklyn’s Ten Minute Turns” – Billboard
FM folk on the kitchen radio, new wave vinyl from the living room, punk rock tapes on the basement boombox—these are the ancestral sounds of Outlines, a family indie rock affair. The band brings together the talents of Holford brothers Casey (Urban Barnyard) and Matt (Darediablo, Southern Records) on guitar and keyboards, cousin Wes Stannard (No Man=No Eyes) on bass, and honorary godfather Daoud Tyler-Ameen (Air Waves, Art Sorority for Girls) on drums. The band is recording its debut release this summer, an amalgam of Casey's solo music and new material composed by the full group. Listen Here "... an edgy and innovative quality that suggests a collaboration between Paul Simon and Mr. Craig Wedren, of the late, great Shudder to Think" - Village Voice "the missing link between lesbian folk, DC punk, '80's synth-pop, and classic rock." - Dan Fishback for Boog City

It's nice when you record something, it goes away for a while, and then suddenly sounds or feels relevant again. with that in mind i uploaded Climb the Walls from my 2003 album Bad Spell, Good Spell. sounds kind of fresh to me right now, somehow. enjoy! (also note matt holford's guest appearance on cardboard box and triangle.)

I hope you will come out to one or all of these fantastic-looking shows. xo C
CASEY'S RESIDENCY EXTRAVAGANZA at SIDEWALK CAFÉ in JANUARY 2009
Tuesday January 6: 8pm CHRIS KIEHNE http://www.myspace.com/chriskiehne my favorite recent songwriter discovery! I've known Chris for years but only recently have I heard his solo material, which is passionate, nimble, tasteful, and sublime.
9pm CASEY SOLO! For my first trick I will be playing as many instruments as possible. Definitely several kinds of guitars and a banjo will be featured. Come watch me play more different instruments than I have ever played at one show before!
Tuesday January 13 8pm DAN FISHBACK http://www.myspace.com/danfishback One of my most frequent and beloved creative collaborators. He's a playwright! He's a performance artist! He's a confrontational/motivational speaker! And he's a fantastic songwriter. Come let him croon to you and somehow kick your butt simultaneously! 9pm DAOUETS http://www.myspace.com/daouets Featuring me, Yoko Kikuchi, and Daoud Tyler-Ameen, all switching instruments while playing one another's songs as a thoughtful, goofball indie-rock power trio.
Tuesday January 20 8pm TOBY GOODSHANK http://www.myspace.com/tobygoodshank the most prolific songwriter i've met, who somehow manages to mix startling diversity with complete clarity of vision. I've been watching him play shows for about seven years and every one has been better than the last.
9pm GILMORE BOYS Me and Preston Spurlock (of the sewing circle! http://www.myspace.com/thesewingcircle ) in a very specific and delightful side-project -- we only write songs based on the Girlmore Girls, and the lyrics of said songs are only based on poems by David Kirschenbaum. This will also feature an actual reading from the lyricist for the first time in the history of our shows (namely, about three).
Tuesday January 27 8pm NO MAN = NO EYES http://www.myspace.com/wesstannard My cousin Wes's music! Dreamy eyed, atmospheric, melancholy, spooky, and tasteful.
9pm OUTLINES My band featuring my brother Matt, cousin Wes, and good buddy Daoud! Master musicians all, they are a pleasure to rock with, and rock we shall.

Just a quick note to let you know that the EP i've been working on in stops and starts for a while now is finally finished ... i'm very happy with how it turned out. I recorded all the instruments and mixed it at home. there is one wonderful guest performance from Julie DeLano of the leader ... man can that lady sing a song.
You can preview a couple of tracks here. The EP is not yet available for download, but if you would like a physical copy please get in touch with me and i'll send you one for cheap.
Love, Casey

hi friends, i put up full length streaming versions of "all young and beautiful," "bad spell, good spell," and "january" at my page on last.fm. so, if you're inclined, check it out. i'm surprised to find myself kinda hooked on the user end of this site as well. i find looking at what i'm listening to somehow fascinating. in other news, just wanted to say i've finally wrested a block of time from the jaws of my schedule in order to do the tracking for "march," my follow up to january. it's composed of four songs i wrote on consecutive days of march 2006. it's been really fun to work on, and i think the songs are sounding great. if you wanna read lyrics to them, to whet your appetite, look no further than here. happy holidays love casey

I've been told a bit of one of my songs will be used in the soundtrack of tonight's episode of Band in a Bubble, the MTV show about, yes, a band called Cartel that's in a big bubble. I think tonight is the final episode. Anyhow, it's tonight, June 12, at 8pm on MTV. So if you are watching it, and you hear a little bit of something that sounds like it could possibly be a Casey Holford song, there's a chance that it is!
love, Casey

Hello friends, I've been writing my own songs and recording my own records for a good while now. Recently I've started producing things for others, and my first completed project is the new record from my friends Cheese on Bread, a multi-city, multilateral diversely and perversely talented pop group who hired me late last year to work on a whole bunch of their richly arranged, irreverent, transcendent, fun-and-smart-and-catchy-as-hell songs. The recordings took place in Brooklyn, LA, DC, and Philly, were mixed on the Lower East Side at and mastered in Chinatown. It took a lot of people a lot of time and talk and resources and effort, and it was all worth it. The album, called "The Search for Colonel Mustard," will be available later this summer after CoB returns from its first European tour. Right now, though, I wanted to let you know there are some tracks available for preview on myspace: myspace.com/cheeseonbread (the songs up at the moment from the recordings are Piece of Ass, Colenol Mustard part 1, and Samurai) I am super proud to have been a part of this record and I can say objectively that it's one of the most satisfying musical experiences I've had in quite a while. I hope you enjoy it too, and thanks for taking the time to read this. Love, Casey -- http://www.caseyholford.com http://www.myspace.com/casey
