Four demos from my upcoming iSv album "GHz" have been posted on my media player. All four songs were performed live at the Systems Check Detroit show during DEMF weekend, and two of them are available on that free compilation I linked to last week.

lil 500 - A tribute of sorts to IU Bloomington's "Little 500" bicycle race. Inspired by Kraftwerk's "tour de france" and The Prodigy's "speedway [theme from fastlane]" while managing to not be as good as either one. Samples Rock 'N' Roll Racing from the SNES, among other things.

GHz - Proper iSv homage to the soundtracks of the Battletoads series of games. An 8-bit version of the song, "MHz," is available on the free-download "MHz" EP.

tek - Built from a sample set provided by Dave Wright of Not Breathing. Speech sampled from sci-fi author Harlan Ellison.

fin - Meant to be used as a dramatic outro. Samples the Legend of Zelda, among other things.

As mentioned on True Chip Til Death, the Systems Check Detroit compilation has been made available for free download. 14. +Matt Moffitt · Calculater
15. + Yatagarasu · Shot in the Face
16. + Baron Knoxburry · blink on the brink

The music is all video game/chiptune/8-bit related, from Gameboy dancepop tunes to NES haywire freakouts. Lots of blips and bleeps, courtesy of Select Start Records. Enjoy. :)

There are two new iSv "songs" on a new compilation out of Australia. From the Dustin Must Die netlabel comes "The Ten Second Comp" themed release, where all included songs last only ten seconds each... 106 tracks in all! The iSv pieces are as follows:

44. iSv - One (0:10)
45. iSv - Two (0:10)

Both are glitchy, bleepy sketches that I plan on kicking out to full-length pieces later. You can download the entire sexy collection right here:

It's chopped way down from its original length, but there's still some meat left on the bone. Get the dirt at the semi-unwieldy URL below:

"Hip to be Square Wave: An Interview with Chiptunes Artist iSv"

Here's one of the Q&As to whet your appetites:

"GG: What kind of equipment do you use to make your music?
iSv: I paint repeating geometrical patterns of syrup onto wax cylinders and then release colonies of ravenous ants into the room. This accomplishes two things: first, the finished cylinders make delightful noises when played on my victrola, which I then record and convert to MP3 for online distribution; second, it ensures that I am never able to keep pets for very long. Damn ants."

I'm happy to report that I've begun posting mp3s of my past releases on MySpace for purchase at a rate of only $0.99 a track... "mSv" and "WAR" are the first two albums available, with EPs, rare works, and comp tracks on the way. You can buy only the tracks you like, or you can buy entire albums for cheaper than it would be to get the songs individually. Enjoy!

In other news, MHz was such a positive experience for me [have you downloaded it for free yet?] that production on the follow-up album, GHz, is going along at a steady clip. It will easily be the longest iSv album to date, with 15 to 17 tracks currently in production. I haven't felt this inspired in a while...

I also have a remix on the new Hansel remix CD, "Reshaping Linear Formulai." It's in a glitchy idm vein, and I'm really happy with the results... definitely something different from a lot of the other tracks on the disc. Fellow SI members Phallus Uber Alles and Black Market Arms Dealers have remixes on the release as well, and the whole thing is up for free download from D-Trash Records.

As promised, my new solo EP is up for free download! 10 tracks of 8-bit/video game/chiptune/experimental goodness! Get it now! Before I explodes!! Nnnngh!!!

Brief track descriptions were posted in my last blog entry-- more detailed info will be up on the iSv web site soon. The only change to the track order is the addition of an 8-bit cover version of the song "LD 50" by Sphere Lazza [remember them?].

Current mood:zombified

In addition to my track "gHz" coming out this month on the new Slave Indvstries compilation "Pro-Tech Anti-Corp", an entire iSv EP will also be released in December. Both will be free downloads. Oh yeah.

01. mHz - Title track of the EP. If the song "gHz" is imagined as a 16-bit work, this is its 8-bit predecessor.

02. MDA - "MDA" refers to an old monochrome video standard for PCs before the rise of VGA. The song "VGA" is set to appear on the "gHz" album. You can see where this is going.

03. mSx - Short for "mSv mix," this original composition was created from the final notes from each of the songs off the first iSv album, mSv.

04. 041 - Creepy electronic piece a la Scanners, Videodrome, etc. 41 was Tetsuo's test subject number in Akira.

05. sid - SID sounds, SID music. C64 stylee. I think the only time I've played this one live was when I opened for VHS or BETA and I Am The World Trade Center.

06. bob - Short for "wobbly-headed bob," a much-beloved character from old Jhonen Vasquez work. Guaranteed to induce both head explodey and satanic head bitey.

07. '98 - One of my earlier [listenable] demo tracks after discovering the Making Waves sequencing software. Recovered and dusted off in the interests of archiving.

08. win - Victory music? Mario, Link and Toad chopped up in a blender. Inexplicably channels a bit of Twin Peaks-era Angelo Badalamenti for no good reason.

09. ??? - I've said too much already...

Seeing that InSoc track posted was so much fun, I thought I'd do it some more:

Up now for listening and [soon?] free download, the title track from my next album. GHz. From GHz. Synth guitar mayo slathered over Money-era KMFDM meat, all stuffed inside NES Battletoads bread.

Delicious!

EDIT: Taken down to showcase more MHz tracks. GHz will be back soon enough...

A fun bit of news on this day: Information Society, the 80s synthpop act responsible for "what's on your mind? (pure energy)," among many others, has posted an exclusive iSv track on their recently-overhauled website, www.informationsociety.us, in the "insoc beat mutation syndicate" section. "nfo soc" is not a remix, but rather an original iSv composition.

The joint effort came about when InSoc added the Slave Indvstries collective on MySpace, and SI mentioned that I had an unreleased track built entirely out of .wav files and samples downloaded from the old InSoc site. Deeming the song "supercool" upon hearing it, the band has now made it available for your listening pleasure!
