My Sound Advice Column, "All The Dumber For It" for Brick this Week....

“The performance by Adam Lambert clearly crossed the line. ABC should be held accountable for airing this indecent and offensive performance. ABC promoted Lambert’s performance to boost its ratings. Now ABC should have to pay a hefty penalty to the FCC for assaulting its viewers with a debased performance by Adam Lambert.”

Anita L. Staver, President of Liberty Counsel, in a complaint to the FCC against the American Broadcasting Company (“ABC”) for airing, “an outrageously lewd and filthy performance by Adam Lambert” on November 22, 2009 during the 2009 American Music Awards.

That’s funny. The only things I find offensive about Adam Lambert are his singing and his fans. The fact that he, to use a partial song title from the late great Richmond instrumental band Breadwinner, “kisses men on the mouth” on national television has no barring on my opinion of him. Regardless of their sexual preferences, I hate all American Idol contestants for the simple reason that they suck. They are to music what Augusto Pinochet was to human rights. As is always the case of these singing and dancing minions of ruthless corporate tyranny, Lambert’s carefully planned attempt at edginess (much like Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction or the kisses exchanged between Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV Music Awards) is nothing more than an oppressive regime solidifying it’s control over the docile masses by presenting pre-packaged controversy that is really much to do about nothing. And oh, how tiresome it is. If Lambert actually sucked his keyboard player’s dick and ass fucked him on the show, I might understand some of the lunatic fringe’s feigned indignation, but he didn’t. He kissed a dude with the same amount of passion most people homosexual or not would reserve for seducing their grandmother’s corpse. Worst of all, Lambert’s thinly veiled Applebee’s inspired homage to Ziggy Stardust era Bowie sexuality was about as groundbreaking as Starship’s “We Built This City”. Anita is right about one thing though. The continually bankable reason behind this meticulously scripted man kiss and choreographed homosexual innuendo is that controversy-no matter how contrived or manufactured- helps to move units. She and her ilk have a vested financial interest in telling people what to be mad at. The whole fake scandal is an early holiday kick off to the seasonal good cheer of the war on Christmas crowd. You can hear it now. “They’ll let two gay men kiss on national television, but they won’t let me call it Christmas blah, blah, blah…” Meanwhile, as the self righteous guardians of public decency fill their coffers with the tidings of irrational moral squeamishness, the machine milks the most of Lambert’s predestinated 15-second reign as a legitimate pop music provocateur based on his ability to incense these very simpletons. It’s one big circle jerk with everybody insisting that they and they alone offer the best reach around and we all are the dumber for it.

Free shows at Balliceaux this week....

On Tuesday 11/10/09, Amazing Ghost plays to entice the teeming masses to gleefully fornicate & drink heavily with their unique brand of 80’s pop/dance subversion. It’s always a super swell, Jim dandy good time when Eddie strikes up the band. On Thursday 11/12/09, the New York/ Richmond conglomeration of boho rock/jazz/soundtrack avant-garde, And The Wiremen grace the Balliceaux backroom stage with their moody, vaguely agitated compositions of post modern urban angst, contemplation and subtle melodic hanky panky. They remind me of Ennio Morricone playing with Pere Ubu during a French film festival showcasing the works of Abel Gance, Jean Epstein, Marcel L'Herbier, and Dimitri Kirsanoff. In other words, I can’t wait to see them live. Both shows are totally free (Let me stress that again. Neither show will cost you any cold hard cash to attend) and begin around 9PMish. I hope you and your loved & not-so-loved ones can make it out to the shows.

Again, exactly listening to the Bopst Show, it won’t cost you a single, shinny penny to do so.
