The Making of Waking the Dead – Part 2....

.. ..

During the first phase of recording, Simon’s mom went into hospital suffering from heart and kidney failure. She moved into a nursing home early in September where she died on September 23rd. Working around his job, visits to the hospital, meetings with doctors and social workers Simon managed to complete the recording and editing of the guitars and vocals to the first 7 songs by September 18th. ....

.. ..

On Friday 25th September Kev emailed Simon a rough mix of the edited drum tracks to “The End Game” and “Above Water”. Simon began work on both tracks the following Monday, and by the end of the week all the guitar parts had been recorded.....

.. ..

Margaret Lees’ funeral was on the following Tuesday (6th Oct) and a rough mix of “The End Game” was played at the end of the Service which was held at Gornal Wood Crematorium. ....

.. ..

Simon took a break from recording between October 6th and November 3rd as he took his annual 2 week holiday and work on Sarah’s solo EP “Wish” was completed. During this time Kev edited the drum tracks to the final four songs and emailed rough mixes of each to Simon so that the guitars and vocals could be added. The remaining songs were: Dawn Will Never Come, In Your Mind, Locked In and My God.....

.. ..

Simon took up the baton again on Tuesday 3rd November and on Monday 16th all of his guitars and vocals were complete. The following day Simon produced a spreadsheet showing all the tracks for each song and began colour coding each type of track to make mixing less daunting. ....

.. ..

On Wednesday 18th Sarah recorded the lead vocal tracks for Abandoned, Above Water, Colourful, Locked In and My God in Pete’s ..Shropshire.. studio.....

Also on Wednesday, Simon began setting the EQ, gating, Compression and Panning for each of the 240 tracks he’d laid down for the 13 songs/instrumentals. This odious task took him until Monday 23rd. Just in time for his PC to start crashing!! ....

.. ..

On Tuesday 24th November Kev took two songs worth of finished drum tracks to load onto Simon’s PC. All day was spent on Colourful and templates were created for each drum and cymbal which could easily be applied to the other 12 songs. There are 18 tracks of drums on each song and Kev had checked every hit of every drum to make sure it was right. ....

.. ..

Later that night Simon’s PC crashed again and the following day Simon downloaded updates for his hardware drivers and recording software which seemed to fix the problem. He also ordered a new digital cable to connect his guitar processor to his soundcard in case his old one had caused his PC to crash. On Wednesday afternoon Simon loaded Kev’s finished drum tracks onto “Hold Me Now” and applied the templates that were created the day before. ....

.. ..

On Thursday Simon re-set his 49 vocal tracks (lead and backing vocals) to lower the volume as it looked as though some distortion had occurred due to levels being too high.....

.. ..

On Friday 27th Simon produced a CD of rough mixes of all 13 tracks to play in the car on the way to his gig in Cambridgeshire. Pete accompanied Simon to the gig and made notes while Simon drove.....

.. ..

After a long weekend, Simon started again on Tuesday 1st December. The CD had revealed there was too much bass on most of the guitar tracks so two days were spent fixing this. During the two days Simon selected reverbs to suit his vocals and guitars on each track.....

.. ..

On Thursday 3rd Pete gave Simon Sarah’s vocal tracks and his own bass parts. Sarah had recorded each song several times so Simon sifted through each take, choosing all the best bits. It is the same process he carried out on his own vocal parts back in September – a process known as “Compiling” or “Comping”. ....

.. ..

On Thursday 10th December the bass and lead vocals were complete. ....

.. ..

Simon spent the following week tweaking and fine tuning various bits and pieces, adding backing vocals here and there and on December 18th produced another CD of the 13 tracks to play in his car.....

.. ..

At present (22nd December) The Making of Waking the Dead is approaching “The End Game”. The following tasks remain:-....

  1. Replacing the rough mixes of drums for the remaining 11 songs with the finished tracks. ....
  2. Recording Sarah’s backing vocals.....
  3. Final Mixing....
  4. Mastering....
  5. Artwork....
  6. Pressing....

.. ..

Hopefully “The Making of Waking the Dead Part Three” will be shorter!!....

New Anubis Related CD! (Not the new album!!)

Sarah (Isis) from Anubis
has released a Christmas single for 2009 entitled Wish. It features the guitar playing of Andy Hart and was engineered by Pete Williamson and mastered by yours truly. It is available for purchase at http://www.anubianmerch.co.uk/ and costs just £4.00 plus P&P.

New One Man Rock Show Dates
The Diary has filled up a little over the last 2 weeks so check out my gig dates for November and December. These dates include The Haygate on Fri 20th Nov (currently billed s a Burlesque night but don't worry about that!) and The Plough in Ashbourne on New Year's Eve.

Saturday and Early Evening Guitar Lesson Slots Available
For the first time in a long while I now have a few slots available at peak times. If you've been meaning to get around to learning the guitar or bass, now is an excellent time to get in touch.

Dave Parsons - R.I.P.
I was absolutely shocked and deeply saddened by the death of one of my students, Dave Parsons who died suddenly of a heart attack. I only taught him on Saturday 7th Nov - we were working on Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs. He was a lovely bloke and I will miss him. My deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Gig Changes

I've updated my Gig List for November and I'd like to point out a couple of changes.

The Anubis Album Launch that was due to take place at the Robin 2 on Tuesday 17th Novermber has now been postponed until March 9th at the same venue. This is mainly due to unforseen problems with the drum recordings and also to give us more time to perfect the album. You can be sure that the finished product will be absolutely breathtaking.

The new gaffer is now comfortably installed at The Stirrups and wishes to check out my web site before continuing with my bookings there. He didn't sound very positive when I spoke to him the other day which is why I've booked a Private Party on the 13th Nov. Apologies to anyone who was hoping to see me there last Saturday but it was out of my control. I still have the 5th of December available if anyone would like to try and persuade him!

Radio Interview!
I was interviewed the other night on Radio WCR 101.8FM. You can listen or download a podcast of the show by clicking HERE . Previous episodes of the show are available but the one I took part in was "Episode 17 - October 7th". My interview begins about 40 minutes into the show and is quite amusing...

If you need to contact me over the next couple of weeks I will be on my Mobile or you can send a message to my My Space site. I will not be contactable any other way until the 28th October.

I thought it might be interesting to chronicle the progress of the new Anubis album to show everybody how the thing is being put together and the timescale involved.

Here it is.............

The Making of Anubis' 2nd Album "Waking the Dead" - Part 1

Long before recording began - Simon, Sarah and Kevin already had material ready to work on and 4 new songs were played live at the Solstice Rock Festival in June. These were "Colourful", "Abandoned", "Are We There Yet" and "Locked In". Sarah wrote all except "Are We There Yet" which Simon wrote and the rest of the band chipped in to help shape each song into its current form.

Pete really liked an acoustic song from Simon's 2nd solo Album Freethinka entitled "Hold Me Now". Many who subsequently heard the song on Radio EKR have hailed it as "the new "Stalked by Sadness" - although others would disagree! The band decided to re-record the song and put it on the new album.

Another of Simon's old tunes which had never been previously released was added to the list and this instrumental is called "Chenevare". Simon originally intended this to go onto Freethinka but was never 100% happy with it. With a new arrangement it now sounds excellent and worthy of a place on the new album.

Kev was extremely keen to contribute to the writing on Waking the Dead and produced several demos to be considered by the rest of the band. These demos were worked on and two songs emerged - "Without Anaesthetic" and a song currently entitled "Dawn Will Never Come".

The only song to emerge from a jam between band members was a thing currently entitled "Stompy". Simon wanted to have a big Sabbathy groove to jam to, so after one rehearsal Kev and Simon stayed behind and Simon recorded the results on his mobile phone. A short time later Simon had the finished arrangement for "Stompy".

Early in July Simon made some rough recordings of the new songs during the band's weekly rehearsal and then set about creating tempo tracks for each one. A tempo track is what a drummer plays along to in the studio so that he doesn't play the song too fast or slow. A few of the songs have deliberate tempo changes during the song so it was essential to have these perfected before Kev recorded the drums which would form the foundation for the rest of the instruments to follow.

Kev and Simon had a few rehearsal sessions to practise the new songs so that Kev would be comfortable with the arrangements and the overall "feel" of each song.

The drum recording sessions were scheduled for August 3rd but due to a soundcard blowing up the first session was put back to August 7th. This was a blessing in disguise as the replacement soundcard was of much higher quality. There were problems with the recordings from the first session as the only available engineer was inexperienced. Fortunately, at the beginning of this session, the chief engineer (under Simon's watchful eye) had established a fantastic drum sound before leaving us in the slightly less capable hands of his understudy. Kev however worked like a trooper, laying down 8 complete songs worth of drums in a day.

It must be said at this point that the studio gave Anubis a fantastic deal on the recordings and that the end result has been as good as if Kev's drums had been recorded in any of the world's top studios.

It had been decided to complete the album in Simon's studio so whilst making the tempo tracks, Simon tried out various settings with his electric and acoustic guitar sounds as well as his mic pre-amp to try to get the best sounds for each instrument. Pete meanwhile was working on a great vocal sound for Sarah to record with as she and Pete would be recording their parts in Pete's studio.

Before handing over the drum recordings to Simon, Kev worked with the chief engineer to edit the drums and make sure they were up to Kev's very high standards. On August 20th Simon loaded the drum tracks onto his PC so that he could start building up the songs. At this point Kev had recorded the drum parts to "Are We There Yet", "Abandoned", "Chenevare", "Colourful", "Locked In", "Hold Me Now", "Stompy" and "Without Anaesthetic".

There had been a technical hitch with the drum recording of "Locked In" so Simon concentrated on the other 7 tracks while Kev fixed the problem.

Although Kev had edited the drums as far as timing issues were concerned there was still a lot of work to get the drums sounding clean - for example deleting unwanted sections where a tom tom may only have been used once during the entire song. Kev also wanted to "normalise" the drums. This is a painstaking process where every drum hit is analysed and brought up to a certain level of loudness. Although this takes a long time to achieve, (up to 5 hours for 1 song) Kev is a master at it and the results are absolutely breathtaking.

Simon's guitar and vocal recordings finally got underway on August 24th. Although not fond of playing the acoustic guitar, Simon has managed to get some acoustic on most of the tracks. The only predominantly "acoustic" song so far - "Hold Me Now" currently has 58 tracks - most of which are combinations of 6 string, 12 string, classical and 6 string with a Capo. Although this is the highest track count, most songs have around 40 which include 16 tracks of drums and 24 tracks of Simon's guitars and vocals. This may seem crazy but during the recording process, Simon has recorded everything he can think of so when it comes to mixing, all of the necessary ingredients will be there.

To speed the whole process up a bit, Simon produced rough mixes of the songs for Pete and Sarah to record vocal and bass parts to so they didn't have to wait for Simon to finish his parts completely before they could start recording theirs. Sarah and Pete began recording their parts immediately and although Pete wasn't 100% happy with his bass sound he continued experimenting with different bass lines until he found the perfect one for each song.

On September 9th, Simon had a session in Pete's studio where he helped Pete achieve the ultimate bass sounds for each type of track. Notes were made so that Simon can re-create these sounds in his studio which means that Pete could record his bass very quickly and be confident in the sound of his instrument.

A 2nd drum recording session was booked and tempo tracks were created and parts rehearsed as before.

The band decided to record new versions of "Above Water" and "In Your Mind" (previously featured on the "Avatar" EP) as bonus tracks. As the original versions used artificial drums, these songs will benefit from Kev's expertise and the fact that these songs have been performed Live.
Another of Sarah's song's "My God" is the heaviest Anubis song so far with a brutal riff played on a de-tuned 7 string Les Paul!
"The End Game" is an instrumental Simon wrote earlier this year and is the only track to go on the album which Kev didn't actually rehearse. Despite this he nailed it on the 2nd take!
The 5th track to be recorded is as yet unfinished but has a working title of "Dawn Will Never Come".

The 2nd drum recording session took place on September 11th and with an upgraded mixing desk the drum sounds came out even better than on the first session.

On 18th September, Simon finished his guitar and vocal recordings on the first 7 tracks and made preparations to make mixing those tracks a bit quicker.

Sarah is filling the time between recordings by writing songs for the 3rd album!

Pete also has a track up his sleeve on which Kev will be playing arabic style percussion.

Kev is currently working with the chief engineer to edit the drum tracks so that the 2nd phase of recording can commence.
