NOTE: this blog is not as long as it looks, takes about 5 minutes to read ;) Have fun.
Good morning.
It seems to me that there are two ways in which the ego can attain gratification; competition and cooperation. The ego can feel good when it sees or makes someone else feel bad, this is competition. It can also feel good by seeing, or making someone feel good, this is cooperation.
The feeling is the same, the only difference being that in one scenario a person has to suffer, while in the other everyone gains. I would argue therefore that cooperation is the better, and that there is NO need, in any situation, for competition.
Surely if the banks, the businesses, the governments, the scientists, the religions, were cooperating rather than competing we would have no banking crisis, no poverty, no torture, no crime, no war. For why would someone choose crime/war/greed when they want for nothing and have a healthy sense of self and dignity?
So this brings me to my next point, that Competition is the cause of all personal (and therefore collective) pain. I would say that any time you feel pain, if you look carefully you will see that somewhere along the line you have, either consciously or unconsciously, signed yourself up as a candidate in a competition.
For example, you feel ugly and fat, and it hurts, but to feel ugly and fat means that you are comparing yourself to someone, otherwise how would you know what "ugly and fat" is? In comparing yourself you are competing. Take yourself out of the competition, lose the comparison, lose the feeling of uglyness.
If you feel you have a shitty job, you must be comparing/competing, for there can be no "shitty" without something supposedly better. You feel like the only way to feel good about yourself is to have a "better" job, but there is a problem with this. For if your attitude is one of competition, no matter how high you go, how many promotions, how much money and success, there will always be someone you will think is better off than you in some way. And its this cycle that causes pain and suffering on an individual, and global scale.
The difference between competitive and cooperative is that one is sustainable while the other is not. Say you have a neighbor with a hot wife, a cool car and an awesome job and you are wildly jealous of this guy. Even if all on the same day he lost his job, his wife and his car, and you got a promotion and a fancy new hat, sure you would feel a great satisfaction at his suffering, but within days (if not hours) you will find you are lacking in some other department and your jealousy and competition will find another outlet, and you'll be bitter and miserable again.
Ironically there is no way to really "Win" in a true, long term way using the competitive model!
Whereas with cooperation, it goes back and forth with a constant sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, it is sustainable and fulfilling to all parties involved.
So look in your life at any pain you are feeling, trace that pain back to the point where you signed up for the competition and hand in your resignation, leave the fuckers to it. The world wants you to compete, school says so, advertising says so, how about fuck off!
Alright, I'd better go get breakfast.
And so no one starts taking me too seriously heres another one I came up with the other day:
"What do you call someone who is sure of something?.....A fool"
All the best.
Rohan.

Usually I don't like to talk about what my songs are "about", but I'll make an exception for this one. So heres a little song about the over medication (SSRI's) of psychological disorders and the poor condition of mental institutions in Ireland.
Did you know they still use ECT (Electro Convulsive "Thearapy" ie. electric shock to your brain) without your consent, even though it has been proven to be dangerous and has never cured anyone of anything!
I could go to any doc in the country, say I'm feeling a little down and be given access to powerful anti depressants which have been proven to be associated with both suicide and homicide.
Check these two links below to see a sample of the compelling connection between these SSRI's and ADHD medication with murder/suicides:
These medications have a role to play in the mental health of some, very depressed people as part of a holistic talking thearapy, but should not be handed out like sweet to anyone whos having a bad mood.
An uneducated population combined with a greedy and soulless Drugs industry is a dangerous combination, wouldnt you say?
I've seen the effects of these drugs on a persons life, it aint pretty, enjoy the song:
Hospital Doors by rohanforsale
Lyrics:
"I sucked your milk, you fed me like a baby. You said "it's because of the drugs", I said "I don't know, maybe". I sat at the window, just sat there watching the sun go down, If not for those days I wouldn't be here now.
I plucked up the courage and walked through those hospital doors, I saw such pain as I ascended the floors. (If you take your life, do it not with a knife, Do it with reason and strength, take your life and make it new again)
The chocolates I brought were put in the drawer with the others, The hugs that I offered were just places in the cupboard. They said you locked yourself in and wouldn't eat for days, They took away the knives but you still found ways, To release the pain, to free your brain, To show them all that you're still the boss and to make all your problems go away.
I hope they don't find you floating in the Liffey, The doctors got it wrong but that doesn't mean you can give. So the whole damn world and it's rules are kind of fucking iffy, But yours are the only rules you ever have to live up to, Be kind or cruel, it's up to you, be wise or be a fool."
Rohan.

Hollywood, Paris, Dublin.
I had heard DIE PUPPE's version of the Velvet Underground classic "White Light White Heat" the day before. I was so impressed with the new angle taken, and of course Kim Dallesandro's sassy vocals.
So naturally I was delighted when Usher (of DIE PUPPE) asked would I make a film for the song. I told Kim I was making the film and she kindly gave me exclusive access to her private photos for me to pick away at. Amongst them were some wonderful images of Joe Dallesandro with Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin, Kim hanging out with Keith Richards. Some beautiful moments of Joe with Andy Warhol and John Waters caught on film as well.
From Usher's studio in Paris to LA where Kim and Joe sang it out, to Dublin where I made the film.
Please enjoy the film, see you at Cannes, I'll be easy to spot, I'll be the one with an umbrella drink, shmoozing with Angelina Jolie holding a suitcase full of money. ciao, MWAH!
Excerpt from Kim's blog about the song:
Kim Dallesandro "So we went to Hunter's Hollow Studio in Echo Park after Usher asked would I (me!) sing this Velvet Underground classic. Mila Reynard came along to shoot some photos to record the event, Chris Schweska was there to sing the parts I wasn't doing and Aaron pretended we were all fantastic. At the end of it all Joeboy called the studio and did the end bit and off went the MP3 files across the ocean to France where they were mixed into this modern day version of a song we all know and sang:"

It's getting harder and harder. Despite our respective leaders and polititians positive attitudes and selective use of up beat statistics, it's still getting worse as evidenced by the growing dole queus in Europe and "depression style" tent cities in America.
So heres my tips on how to combat the global economic crisis, in style.
Step 1: Buy a limited edition "Rohan Tatoo Shirt", click the pic below to visit the store:
Step 2: While wearing your Rohan shirt go to your boss and ask for a raise. The confidence gained by wearing the Rohan shirt is sure to help you bag that much needed income boost!
Step 3: When you go shopping, put on your Rohan shirt and close your eyes, then simply allow the power of the shirt to guide you to the special offers, Luke Skywalker style.
Step 4: Stop buying gifts for people you hate, and that clearly hate you while staying totally immune to their abuses by wearing your Rohan shirt.
Step 5: Because 98% of sex happens in the brain, the same is therefore true of expensive foreign holidays! Slap on some sunscreen, turn the heating up in the house, lay back and enjoy. Then show off your Rohan shirt to your friends and pretend you bought it from a snake charmer at an exotic bazaar! Voila! Free holiday!
Step 6: It's scientifically proven that the only people who want you to go out night clubbing on the weekend actually work for the drink companies, don't be fooled anymore! Stay at home, enjoy a nice night in with a good book and your Rohan shirt.
Step 7: Sell that big gas guzzler and buy yourself a bicycle. Stay fit and save money while showing off your Rohan shirt.
Step 8: Because the world is either going to end or radically change beyond recognition in 2012, while the recession will go until at least 2015, use your Rohan shirt as a reminder of the fact that you've just wiped 3 years off your recession!
Step 9: The limited edition Rohan Tattoo shirt is so cool you can wear it almost every day saving a fortune on laundry bills. Then when it does need a wash, why not wash by hand saving further!
Step 10: Cancel all your direct debit payments to charitable causes because the only people who can actually do something to help starving people are the exact same people who want them to starve (and that means not you). Wear your Rohan shirt and tell everyone to get fucked, you'll feel great and have more money!
Good luck folks!

These past weeks I've had the great honor of working with a wonderful artist, poet and person! That person is Kim Dallesandro, and the songs "Did You See The Sun Fall", "Frozen Reality", "Objects In The Mirror", "Always Be Near", "Prayer From A Lonely Child" and "Victim #3" are the works in question.
I took Kim's lyrics, wrapped some sound around them and these are the results:
"Victim #3":
VICTIM #3 kdallesandro 2009 sorta music BMI
Live the life of Reilly And tryin' to make believe All you have to offer Is hidden up your sleeve Insults dripping with measured dare Eyes are nothing but a glassy stare Rip Rip Rip me to pieces Confetti flying through the air I don't have the guts To even the score and I don't want to be Your victim number 3 (don't pressure me//)
Running the risk Of walking the line You don't have the guts To admit this carnal crime I caught you sitting on a dirty floor With your knickers and her pinafore Rip Rip Rip me to pieces Confetti flying through the air I don't have the guts To even this score and I don't want be Your victim number 3 (don't pressure me//)
//
Don't want to be victim #3 Don't pressure me Don't want to be victim #3
Rip Rip Rip me to pieces I don't want to be Your victim number 3
Jump on the bandwagon And ride your coattails home Censor correspondence And request you're left alone You break The 10 commandments Hammer falling striking stone Rip Rip Rip me to pieces Confetti flying through the air I don't have the guts To even this score but I don't want to be Your victim number 3 (don't pressure me//)
"Prayer From A Lonely Child":
PRAYER FROM A LONELY CHILD (life will be the death of me) k (banks)dallesandro sorta music 2009 BMI
I can't recall it being easy Living on your own Nobody to protect you No one to call your own And all I find that age brings Is weariness and pain Finding what you had before Will never be the same
Dreams are the invaders The shoot straight to the soul Until you try to reach for one And like a man they go Life will be the death of me I find it rough and hard Me the unlucky poker player Waiting for that winning card
Then I found a gentle stranger Drifting through the sea I'd been waiting for so long Waiting for his company I threw away the pain and I pushed aside my pride I had waited for so long For someone by my side
// This is a prayer from a lonely child Lost in a world that is so big and wild You were the cool breeze of the evening The warmth of every summer day Let me hold you tight one last time Then I'll watch you fly away
I suppose I'm alittle selfish That's what people say I only wish that I could somehow Make you say you'd stay Your head is in the city And your heart is way back home So hold me tight one last time Then leave me all alone
That's why I don't recall it being easy Living on your own
"Did You See The Sun Fall":
SING ALONG:
With Jesus up above me And the Devil down below I found myself in circles Not knowing where to go
Too bad I lost direction On a rocky winding path And fell into the cluthes Of such jealousy and wrath
My heart belonged to everyone But my soul remained my own Now even if it's the fire of hell I will always have a home
Past that point I'm finding My story starts to fade But I recall a poet Stealing souls was his trade
"Words come so easy But costly to get back" Said the weary poet Pulling rhymes from his sack
I wish he would have stopped me As my words began to flow I told him of my deepest fears And things he'd never know
"Just take what life delivers And invest it at your will" But I just looked straight through him As my soul began to spill
"Did you see the sun fall Into the raging stream Can you help me understand Can you tell me what it means?"
I spoke into the darkness I spoke into the dawn Bartered all those memories For this dance upon the lawn
When my voice was but an echo My chest an empty shell I found my soul had vanished And on my knees I fell
My heart belonged to everyone But my soul remained my own Now even if it's the fire of hell I will always have a home
"Just take what life delivers And invest it at your will" But I just looked straight through him As my soul began to spill
Past that point I'm finding My story starts to fade But I recall a poet Stealing souls was his trade
"Did you see the sun fall Into the raging stream Can you help me understand Can you tell me what it means?"

Working and touring with my dad over the years I've met a lot of cool musicians, I've found myself eating Pizza backstage with Cat Power's Chan Marshal, I've chewed the fat with Russel Crowe and Billy Bragg, but this tops them all!
Recently I've had the opportunity to work with my dad David Virgin on the song "Little Joe" for Joe Dallesandro, Warhol Superstar! But more than that I've had the opportunity to speak with Joe and be moved by what a wonderful guy he is.
Right now Joe is releasing his biographical documentary, chronicling his rise to stardom in the Warhol Factory scene and beyond! So far it is recieving rave reviews from various film festivals (Seattle, Berlin) and critics alike! Be sure to click his pic in this blog, check out his page and blogs for interviews and other cool stuff!
Below is the work of two good men, the song "Little Joe", David Virgin's "Rock n Roll Man" set against the timeless images of Joe Dallesandro, and a lovely slideshow created by the artist and songwriter Kim Dallesandro.
Please take the time to check them out and visit their wonderful pages:
New single "Little Joe" by David Virgin, you can hear it on the profile and you can download it here and stick it on your phone or mp3 player it's FREE Click the picture below to download: "Sexy rock and roll. I love it." - Joe Dallesandro
"LITTLE JOE" by David Virgin
Now girls and boys here's a name you ought to know, He's cut from the stone of Michaelangelo. I don't care if you're a boy or a girl, He the finest looking man in the whole damn world.
Little Joe.
Hey little baby c'mon let's go, To the Warhol, Morrissey picture show. He's the real life Flesh of Saint Sebastian, He's the wingless angel of Trash and Heat.
Little Joe.
Listen here people I say you gotta know, That movie actor in the hustler role. When the camera rolled on that New York street, I had to catch my breath and let my heart skip a beat.
That's Joe.
Little Joe.

Hey guys, so here is my top ten favorite films! I could easily think of another 30 or more to battle for the top ten spots, but that will have to wait till the next list! (Rohan's other top ten favorite films)
And before you say "where the fuck is Jurassic Park: The Lost World?" I say to you that this is just my personal faves, let me know what you think should be included in the comments if you like ;)
So have fun, hope you enjoy the list, and if you havent already be sure to watch all these films!!!
ps. I'm pretty sure I got all my film facts right but if theres something wrong let me know and I'll fix it up ;)
In no particular order:
1: Lost Horizon
dir: Frank Capra
year: 1937
Ro. The best Movie ever. A bunch of people are flying over China when they crash land in Shangri La. Perfect in every way, encapsulates all of humanity, beautifully shot, beautifully acted. Watch this film! Stars Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy and Eddie Murphy (no it doesnt)
2: Flesh
dir: Paul Morrissey
year: 1968
Ro. Produced by Andy Warhol, Flesh is the first of the early Andy Warhol/Paul Morrissey/Joe Dallesandro trilogy (Flesh/Trash/Heat), Id certainly never seen a film like this, and I'll bet it was even more eye opening in 1968. Its so layed back and realistic, a lot of the dialogue was ad libbed, the shots are so long and personal without ever becoming uncomfortable, you just feel like your there in the room with the actors like no other film. Its funny and sweet, strangely innocent despite the New York hustling scene in which its set.
Youve just gotta see it.
A warning to all the straight guys, this ones a confuser, you might need to take some time to contemplate your sexuality after viewing!
3: Rope
dir: Alfred Hitchcock
year: 1948
Ro. For fucks sake, almost too good to be true this one. Filmed as one continuos shot (though they had to zoom into something dark every 40 minutes or so to change the rolls of film) Rope really shows the acting tallent of the cast and Hitchocks skill in the art of tension is just mindblowing. Its like watching a play. I remember when watching this the last time thinking "I'd like to see Tom Fucking Cruise" hold a character like that for a 40 minute continuos take!! Also the fact that its one take, is not jarring in the slightest, in fact if you didnt know before hand you probably wouldnt notice, its that smooth!!
The fact that this was made in 1948 boggles the mind.
James Stuart is a god. Watch this damn movie!
4: Coogans Bluff
dir: Don Siegel
year: 1968
Ro. Cmon, who hasnt wanted to be Clint Eastwood for a week? Cmon!! A cowboy sheriff goes to the big city to kick some butt and act fucking cool. Its not Citizen Kane by any means but its got that awesome late 60's vibe, and HELLO he's a cowboy who goes to the big city to kick butt FFS!
Also watch out for the scene in the club with the psychadelic band playing the song "Pidgeon Toe'd Orange Peel"!!
Plus its got the best movie quote of all time: "No one calls me Mr with my boots off" fuck yeah!
How could a film with this shot not to be awesome:
5: Rollerball
dir: Norman Jewison
year: 1975
Ro. Thirty guys on roller skates and motorbikes fighting each other to get a Mango sized steel ball into a tiny hole while beating the crap out of each other...in the future! Doesnt get much better than thas, plus James Caan is super cool, and the soundtrack is awesome!
6: 2001: A Space Odyssey
dir: Stanley Kubrick
year: 1968
Ro. I wouldnt even know where to start with 2001, and nothing I could say would do it justice. Just see it (preferably at the cinema), take it all in, and point out to your friends all the bits that were in the Simpsons. Sci Fi perfection.
7: I am a Fugitive From A Chain Gang
dir: Mervyn LeRoy
year: 1932
Ro. This is great, I wont tell you what happens, just trust me that its a good one! Back before Hollywood had honed its cookie cutter formula there was still room for experimentation, one of my favorite film endings ever! And what a cool fucking poster!!
8: The Razors Edge
dir: Edmund Goulding
year: 1946
Ro. Another that encapulates all of human nature. A great adaptation of Somerset Maugham's book of the same name. Our protagonist gets back from WWI and cant quite fit in so he goes on a spiritual journey to find himself and everyone else, pretty wild stuff! So good I wrote a song called "Sophie" as soon as the credits started to roll, must finish recording that one of these days!
9: Eraserhead
dir: David Lynch
year:1977
Ro. I watched this when I was 12 years old and I didnt sleep properly for a week, it is highly disturbing regardless of your age, I certainly wont be watching it alone at night!! An example of David Lynch's early work, totally unique, totally freaky! It's an experience!
10: The General
dir: Buster Keaton
year: 1926
Ro. Buster Keaton is a genius. There is a list about a mile long of new standards and techniques pioneered by Keaton during the making of this film, the types of shots, the sets, the stunts, the editing, stuff that is still used for movies now. Besides all that its also a really great silent comedy, his wonderful face that stays straight despite all around him going to the shit lol, a really beautiful film!
Bonus Movie: Shogun Assasin
dir: Kenji Misumi & Robert Houston
year. 1980
Ro. Yeah so I said best "10" but hey its my list and I'll do what I want (I think I did pretty well concidering theres about another 30 I'd like to mention). There are many great Samurai movies new and old, including of course the great work of Akira Kurosawa. But for sheer fun and awesomeness its hard to beat "Shogun Assassin". From the moment The Lone Wolf places before his baby son a ball and a sword and little fella crawls to the sword you know this movies is gonna be fucking cool!
If this trailer isnt the coolest thing youve ever seen, you need to see a psychothearapist:
