.... from a new writer - Gabe Jackson!
Live at the Bieroc discovers another diamond
By Gabe Jackson
Dale Dueland, talent scout for “Live at the Bieroc” has been mining the country for over nine years now with the goal of bringing talented musical artists to McCook in an unpretentious, informal and relaxed fashion. The intimate setting coupled with enthusiastic and appreciative audiences has generated a buzz with folk / acoustic artists traveling through the area and as a result has earned “Live at the Bieroc” a “must stop” reputation. This is a goal he had in mind when he first began this venue with Bieroc Café Owner, Matt Sehnert. “We remain committed to bringing to McCook a variety of high quality, emerging artists who show great potential in the music industry” said Dueland.
Meet Claire Cook, publicist for the group SHEL who will be performing “Live at the Bieroc” this Thursday. “I am excited about recently picking up SHEL as a client because they are a talented group of sisters with a unique sound, and artists with a lot of potential. It takes hard work to put a quality sound together and these girls have what it takes, they are just wonderful”, said Cook.
Cook should know, throughout her twenty year career in the music business she has worked with some of the best including: Bob Seger, Bonnie Raitt, Earl Klugh, J. Geils Band, Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes, Michael Johnson, Tina Turner, The Stray Cats, George Thorogood, Queen, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a host of others.
In addition, five-time Grammy award winning producer, Brent Maher, produced their first project, the 2009 debut release, “Try to Scream”, praised as “one of the most impressive debut albums of the year”, by Chris Douridas, host of KRCW’s Weekend Becomes Eclectic. And the acknowledgments keep coming including, “New Favorite Band” title by writer and music critic Dave Herrera of The Denver Westword Music Blog.
“I am confident when these sisters take the stage this Thursday, those in attendance will discover what others have seen and heard in SHEL, a soulful blend of amazing harmonies accompanied by stunning instrumentals which move and inspire you”, said Dueland.
Be inspired. Check out SHEL on the web at http://www.myspace.com/coloradoshel www.myspace.com/coloradoshel, http://www.iloveshel.com www.iloveshel.com, and Live at the Bieroc, in McCook, NE, Thursday, September 17th.

Folks - if you haven't checked out musicload.com, do it today! We can't mention Greg Chamberlain's efforts on behalf of indie artists enough because he has a great ear and eye for talent. Ever since SHEL became acquainted with Greg and musicload, we have consistently been impressed with his drive to promote indie artists - at his own expense!
Now that is dedication!!!
We hope that you will take the time to read through his page and go listen to all of the artists listed. Again - what an amazing resource for anyone looking for great quality outside of mainstream music played on most of the really big radio stations in this country.
Check it out!!

Art auction to feature 30 local artists, live music
BY STACY NICK StacyNick@coloradoan.com Crammed together in a station wagon to show stops from Nashville to Nebraska isn't always easy for local band SHEL. Good thing they've had a lot of practice being together. Taking their name from the first letters in each of their names, the Holbrook sisters - Sarah, 18, Hannah, 21, Eva, 19 and Liza 15 - form the latest Northern Colorado group generating national buzz in the music industry. "We take the opportunities as they come," said the folk-pop group's pianist, Hannah. And there are a lot more opportunities on the horizon, although for now the girls are looking forward to staying close to home. Next up: On Friday, the group, along with guitarist Mike Banta, pianist Calvin Jones and physical art performer Scott Freeman, will perform as part of Art Show '09, an art auction and fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity. The girls will then head back out to do some shows in Kansas and then to Nashville to record some more songs. They recently released the EP "Try to Scream" with Grammy-winning producer Brent Maher, who has worked with Shelby Lynne, Kenny Rogers and the Judds. He's just about the only member of the SHEL team right now who isn't part of the Holbrook clan. The girls write and perform all of their own music, Sarah also does the band's videos and "momager" Lynn Holbrook handles publicity and merchandising for the group. But it was dad Andrew Holbrook, a 35-year veteran songwriter and musician, who gave the girls their first opportunity to perform on stage, working as backup musicians for him. Soon enough, it became clear that each of the girls had their own natural musical talents - Liza, the group's youngest member, began playing the pedal harp at age 6. Each also, in turn, backed up Andrew at various shows until it was their dad who began backing them up. "Dad began stepping back and letting us run the show," said Eva, who, along with Hanna, is one of the group's chief songwriters, and they bounce ideas off of him. "Our dad is one of our biggest influences," said Liza, who moved on to drums two years ago. "He always gives us honest feedback on our songs," Hannah added. "Our mom, too; they are honest to a point." But just because SHEL happens to be a band of sisters, don't label it a "sister act," the girls said. "People always think we're a bluegrass or a gospel group because of that, but we're not," Eva said, adding that no matter what hook people focus on, be it the fact that they're sisters or girls or young, SHEL will have to prove it is more than a gimmick. "Women and girls are marketed because of their looks; we're more interested in being marketed because of our musicianship," Eva said. Having the constant support of family helps - especially as the sisters say they frequently find themselves on the same musical wavelength - but sometimes things get a little too close for comfort. "We're all together all the time, so when stuff comes up (with one or two of us), it affects the whole family," Sarah said. But as the band's success grows, the girls are finding balance, Eva said. Each has committed to music and to making the band a success. It wasn't always the clearest path; prior to committing full time to the band, each was pursuing other interests - Hannah was majoring in piano performance at Colorado State University, Sarah was studying graphic design and Eva was working on a solo album. But when it came time to make the decision, the sisters said it was easy. "We've all chosen music to be our lives," Hannah said. Ultimately, the band hopes to be able to tour with large-scale acts, like its heroes Switchfoot and Coldplay, creating a worldwide audience for its unique sound. "And survive the music business - not just survive but also thrive," Eva added. "Which can be a challenge if you don't have the right people on your team."

Concert of Hope 2009
Local nonprofit Hospitals of Hope will hold its second annual benefit concert on October 16 at Maranatha Worship Center in Wichita. This year’s concert will feature popular Christian band Waterdeep, talented singer/songwriter Justin McRoberts, and SHEL, a neo-acoustic quartet of sisters. Proceeds will go to support Hospitals of Hope’s international medical mission work, in countries from Bolivia to Liberia. Tickets, which are $12 or $10 each for groups of 10 or more, can be purchased online at http://www.hospitalsofhope.org/concert.htm or at the door the night of the concert. Doors open at 6:30, and the concert will begin at 7:30.
Waterdeep, composed of husband and wife team Don and Lori Chaffer, is an independent Christian band which recently moved to Nashville, TN from the Kansas City area. Originally formed in 1995, Waterdeep has included several other musicians over the years and has released over ten albums. Waterdeep is best known for a joint project with 100 Portraits that yielded the worship album Enter the Worship Circle, which has been reported by some media outlets as the biggest-selling independent Christian album of all time. It was released in 1999 and included original worship songs such as “You Are So Good To Me,” “I Will Not Forget You,” and “You Have Redeemed My Soul.” For more information, visit http://www.waterdeep.com/home.
Justin McRoberts is a highly respected singer, songwriter and speaker who, over the past nine years, has carved out a niche for himself in the independent music scene. He is one of those rare artists who blends artistry, honesty and humor almost seamlessly. McRoberts’ most recent release, Deconstruction (2008), is laden with the same disarming honesty he is known for both in his recordings as well as his live performances. Without becoming heady or overbearing, Deconstruction is a prescription for a healthy re-examination of established religious, consumer and scientific worldviews. To learn more, visit http://www.justinmcroberts.com/.
Shel, of Ft Collins, Colorado, glides effortlessly atop the lilting, sublime voices of the Holbrook sisters, Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza. But Shel's appeal goes way beyond the vocals. These gals are exceptional musicians as well, with each member playing an array of instruments including violin, electric bass, piano, mandolin to drums. To find out more about the band, visit http://iloveshel.com/.
Hospitals of Hope is a Christian medical relief organization based in Wichita. Hospitals of Hope aims to improve the healthcare of the under-served, both locally and internationally, through the gathering and distribution of medical supplies and equipment, the establishment and support of low-income clinics and hospitals, and the sending of volunteers to serve abroad. To learn more about Hospitals of Hope, visit www.hospitalsofhope.org or hospitalsofhope.blogspot.com.

Head here and read a great article about SHEL (it's at the bottom of the page - but there are lots of great articles before that...).
If you aren't familiar with Musicload.com check it out. Greg does an amazing job of getting indie music out there for people to listen to and make choices about. His heart is in it and that is SO wonderful for the many indie musicians, internationally that he is bringing to light. Hope you will support his efforts!

Tip sheet: Meet Shel, our new favorite band By Dave Herrera in Tip Sheet Wednesday, Aug. 5 2009 @ 6:00AM
What in the hell are they putting in the water up in Fort Collins? Seriously? Seems like every ten minutes or so our neighbors to the north are churning out another batch of noteworthy artists. Meet Shel, the latest FoCo outfit to cast us under its spell. Comprised of four sisters, the group glides effortlessly atop the lilting, sublime voices of the Holbrook sisters, Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza. But Shel's appeal goes way beyond the vocals. These gals are exceptional musicians as well, with each member playing an array of instruments including violin, electric bass, piano, mandolin to drums. The sisters, which got their start backing their singer-songwriter dad Andrew, have already attracted the attention of soundtrack supervisor extraordinaire, Chris Douridas from KCRW, who listed their six-song EP, Try To Scream, as "one of the most impressive debuts of the year." Couldn't agree more. Check out the video for the Shel song that caught Douridas's (and our) attention, "Latest Greatest Blueberry Rubber Band" after the jump, and then catch the group at Heavenfest this Saturday, August 8 at 1 p.m. on the Rock Stage.

From Musicload.com - "The Colorado based band, SHEL, is not just talented. This group of four sisters is very gifted. Having spent their earliest childhood years with their singer/songwriter/guitarist father, they themselves are now firmly in the artist's seat. The music of SHEL is a mixture of serious angelic pop vocals mixed with a blend of gypsy mountain classical rock and jazz. They just don't sound like anyone else to compare them to. Each arrangement is simply exquisite and unique. SHEL's music is pure bliss and synchronistic harmony that perhaps only sisters could possibly achieve. Enjoy!

While many local Pop musicians are still sleeping, the four Holbrook sisters gather by 9 a.m. for daily band meetings before several hours of daily practice. The sisters – Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza – combine their names and musical talents to form Shel, a Fort Collins Folk-Pop band with three records and six years of performances under their belts, even though the youngest member, Liza, is just 15. While she is home-schooled, the other three – ages 18, 19 and 21 – play music all day. They are on hiatus from school and work, focusing on solo and band tunes.
It's a full-time and full-family affair. The sisters each started out by playing backup for their father, Andrew, a longtime staple on the Fort Collins singer-songwriter circuit. He led the band until 2008, when he stepped back. "If they wanted to take the next step, the old man being up front was not going to cut it," Andrew said. He is still involved with Shel, coaching them on instruments, helping guide their songwriting and manning the soundboards at shows. Mother, Lynn Holbrook, is affectionately known as the "momager." She's the manager, publicist, merchandise distributor and chef for Shel. All the parental guidance might invoke Jackson family nightmares, with Eva building a backyard amusement park and befriending a chimp. But it's clear the daughters are passionate musicians driven toward exposure and success. "We want to be a Pop band and see the world," said Hannah, picking Switchfoot or Jars of Clay as ideal co-headliners. Sarah admitted to a more modest goal: "All we really want is to play frisbee with Switchfoot." For now, the touring has reached the Midwest, including regular summer festival gigs. But Shel's studio tracks have reached Nashville. They recorded a demo with Grammy-winning producer Brent Maher, who has worked with Shelby Lynne, Kenny Rogers and the Judds. He may continue working with them on their next studio album. Eva said Shel was Maher's first long-distance production collaboration, as well as his first with an underage member. He may add a Country-Pop tint to an already eclectic musical palette. The Maher-produced demo is an infectious Regina Spektor-influenced Pop song with the Beatle-esque title, "The Latest and Greatest Blueberry Rubber Band." It's full of harmonic oohs and aahs backing some Fort Collins-inspired lyrics. "If everybody rode a bike, think how quiet it would be," sings Eva. "No noisy motors driving past to bother you and me." Other songs have a slower, more somber feel akin to Neko Case (no mean feat, vocally) or simple radio-friendly Pop harmonies. Eva and Hannah are the main songwriters for Shel, and each play regular "solo" shows – mainly with backup instrumentation from the other sisters. The Holbrook sisters demonstrate their experience with a calm, personable stage demeanor and a creative collaboration of four related but quite different musicians. "Our home is an incubator for original sound," Eva said. If you like: Regina Spektor, Nickel Creek, Switchfoot LIVE: April 11 / Fort Collins MX Festival at Avogadro’s Number / Eva – solo / 9:15 p.m. April 25 / Fort Collins' City Park for an Earth Day celebration / Shel – 1 p.m.

If you have plans for March 27th, Change them!!!! Category: Music Had an awesome time last Friday listening to Eva Holbrook and her sisters Sarah, Hannah, and Liza who comprise the group SHEL. Wonderfully pure voices, they ooze inspired talent unspoiled as of yet by overproduction or someone trying to commercialize their sound. They have an excellent command of their instruments that they manipulate with the ease that comes with eons of practice and that one percent inspiration that makes genius (as I borrow from Einstein). Their innate sense of vocal harmonizing most likely stems from the closeness that you can only get from family, topped off with natural talent and of course, hard work. I was truly amazed at their level of talent, and their love of music is evident in every note. They are just wonderful to watch, and listen to, lol my coffee even got cold as I forgot to sip it for half their set. Eva's command of the mandolin and Sarah's magical touch of the violin are amazing. SHEL was performing with minimal instruments, as it was a somewhat farewell gig for Eva as a soloist. Next Friday, March 27th SHEL will be in full force, Hannah will have her keyboard and Liza her full percussion set. Hence my suggestion to change your plans and meet me at 8 pm at Everyday Joes in Fort Collins, Colorado. Check out their myspace at www.myspace.com/coloradoshel if you are out of the area. Its magical though, to see them in person. Everyday Joes is a non profit coffee house, so audiences of all ages are welcome.
Thank you Steve and Joni!!!
