DJ Love began his dj career inspired by such seminal artists as Coldcut, Bomb the Bass, Simon Harris, Kraftwerk, Soulsonic Force, Egyptian Lover, Art of Noise, Paul Hardcastle and a host of other electronic and hip-hop pioneers. Electronic music fascinated him as a means of expressing raw emotion through beats, breaks and basslines
Having been trained as a classical pianist and violinist, then augmenting his skills by learning the guitar and drums in high school, Love´s musical training gave him strengths as an electronic composer from the start. Developing a small record collection his first few years of college, he was inspired by the fact that most of the music he felt was truly influential was only available on vinyl.
A live performance of "Rockit"by the legendary Herbie Hancock and Grandmaster DST changed his perspective when he witnessed someone scratching over a track live. Experimenting with his small collection, he taught himself to beat mix almost by accident. Attempting a remix of "What´s On Your Mind" by Information Society led to beatmixing a record and a drum machine together, and his DJ career was born. Confined to the small town of Lawton, Oklahoma, Love would often drive two hours or more to find the music and crowds that inspired him. He recreated scratches from his favorite hip-hop records by trial and error until he had mastered them, then began playing out at local clubs in 1988. In 1992, he threw the first-ever, documented renegade "rave" in the OKC area, employing the old-school techniques of maps, an abandoned warehouse and a generator.
This was all while he began a four-year residency at Rome, where he was given his DJ moniker of "Love". The income and gigs allowed him to acquire his own set of turntables, a mixer, and his first real music studio in 1994...six years after he had already started his DJ career. His love of real hip-hop and artists like DJ Premier and Pete Rock, among others, helped him focus on bass and beats as the sound that would define his label, Stellar Music, founded in 1996.
By 1994, Love had developed a foothold in the Dallas music scene, and in 1997 moved there permanently. With a residency at club mainstay the Lizard Lounge in 1998, he achieved a following of those dedicated to old and new beats that followed him to such respected local hot spots as 2826, The Red Jacket, The Wall, Club DNA, Starck, Euphoria, Area 51, and currenty Club One. Love has gained a following across the globe in cities like Toronto, London, D.C., Bangkok...and the dent hasn't even been made yet.

The ElastoCitizens were founded by Steve McCarthy and Jason O'Brien in the fall of 2004. With theatrical grandeur and ecstatic stageshows, they have endeavoured to bring their brand of heavy groove, funky feel good music to the masses. Since their conception The ElastoCitizens have headlined across Toronto at venues such as Crowbar, the El Mocambo, the Drake Hotel, Supermarket, Clintons Tavern, and the State Theatre, playing to over 1500 people in their first eight shows. The ElastoCitizens are distinguished from other bands by their size and by their stageshow. The band is currently made up of twelve members drawn from such diverse worlds as jazz, blues, theatre, and dance. The horn section is led by Geelicious (aka Gordon Hyland), the leader of the Ladies Foundation for the Motion of Hips is Hippapotafunk (Monica Dottor), and the entire band is led by the Grand Poohbah Groove (Steve McCarthy). With its costumes, choregraphy, superhero personas, and anarchic style the band has continued to impress new audiences with its dance-able original music. The shows are finely tuned, constantly workshopped productions whos model is closer to a theatre piece or circus than your usual rock concert. The band chooses to draw from the polyrhythms and themes of the funk era as a means of making groove-ridden modern tunes. The belief that dancing, and the buoyant joyful expression of life and sex that is at the heart of funk music, is actually good for you, unites the citizenship and gives the band unity of purpose!
Colin Chu, better known as Big League Chu, is simply the leading DJ talent in Canada's breakbeat scene today. After nearly a decade of DJing, his name is synonymous with the funky, party-happy sound that?s become Chu's rallying call - and it's one that crowds answer faithfully. Passion for music and fun are what motivates Chu, who plays the piano, flute and guitar, and counts the Dave Matthews Band and Public Enemy as his biggest musical influences. It's this good-natured respect for good times and eclectic sounds that has garnered this humble DJ of Hong Kong and Singaporean descent to such a steady stream of press, from underground publications like Tribe and Klublife to mainstream outlets like the Toronto Star and Eye weekly. As Make It Funky's main resident, Colin dynamic sets and down to earth nature has made him Toronto's most sought after performer.

They have also been called upon by the godfather himself, Afrika Bambaataa, to produce four tracks on his recent album "Dark Matter" on Tommy Boy Records. Recently, they have been back in the studio with Afrika Bambaataa and King Kamonzi releasing a smoking new single called Radio Free DC. FK5's unique DJ style ranges from eclectic downbeat & hip hop, to upbeat funk and breaks. Their keen sense of party rocking has gained them countless fans around the globe. They have rocked dancefloors in Russia, Germany, Greece, Spain, Hungary, Holland, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and Canada to name a few. As well as mega clubs such as Fabric Live in London, Supercharged in Brighton, La Paloma in Barcelona, and many more....
In 2005 Fort Knox Five was honoured into the prestigious Urb Magazine Next 100, and featured on the Hotel Costes Sept Compilation, FK5 also teamed up with the English Funkateers, Skeewiff, over at Jalapeno Records. Together they compiled a breakbeat funk compilation called, The Raid. It features exclusive tracks and remixes by Skeewiff, the Fort Knox Five, and Kraak en Smaak. These tunes all come from the back catalogs of Fort Knox and Jalapeno.
A major turning point also in that year was when they were selected to be Gwen Stefanis tour and show DJ on the Harajuku Lovers 2005 tour. Being a part of this, they had the opportunity to open sellout shows with Gwen Stefani, and the Black Eyed Peas. They were able to play massive arenas, such as the Hollywood Bowl, Madison Square Gardens, and everywhere else in between. Returning to Toronto almost a year after his legedary jam with God Made Me Funky in the summer of 2006, Fort Knox Five is also touring to support FORT KNOX REMINTED.
Reminted is the second CD release from Fort Knox Recordings, featuring a selection of Fort Knox Five's remixes, compiled & mixed in their signature, party-rocking DJ style.

Zirca (Make it Funky, Mixed Bag) www.djzirca.com
Zirca has been spinning Drum & Bass since 2002. Although a fan of all genres of DnB, he prefers the smoother, funked out rollers and all that is liquid funk. He plays gigs regularly in Toronto and has touched down on local radio shows such as 1groove.com, partyradio.ca & club246.com and internationally on proxima.fm. He is a resident for Make It Funky and the founder of Mixed Bag: Downtempo & Breakbeat Sessions & the forthcoming liquid funk/reggae/dub monthly, SoulFULL. With two monthly's under his belt Zirca is one to watch.
Lady Linzee www.myspace.com/ladylinzee
Linzee (or Lady Linzee as we now know her) first became aware of her love for music back in the mid-nineties, in her soon to be hometown of Toronto, Canada. Always one of the first clubgoers on the dancefloor and one of the last one's to leave, she was inspired by some of the Detroit techno, house and trance greats such as Kenny Glasgow, Richie Hawtin, John Debo and DJ Dan. Today when Linzee is not on the dancefloor, she can be found bopping behind the decks of some of the smaller, more intimate parties around Toronto where she uses the music as a catalyst to create a funky explosion of energy.
She has built a name for herself spinning tunes on the chunky and funky edge of house music, gracing the decks in such clubs as the Ministry of Sound (London, UK), Heaven (London UK), Buzz (Washington, DC), Trade (Turnmills, London, UK), Faces (Ayia Napa, Cyprus), Volkesgarten (Vienna, Austria). Since her return to Toronto she held a monthly residency at Element Bar (Toronto, Canada), played to a crowd of thousands at the Docks for Reconnected in April 2005 opening up for the world renowned Crystal Method and held a year-long residency alongside a wide range of international superstars at Toronto's System Soundbar. Two years running she has funked up the stage at Toronto's Pride.
Seeing Linzee spin, you can't help but catch on to her infectious grooves as she bops along behind the decks. Her boundless enthusiasm, tremendous skill and overall presence behind the decks definitely makes her a DJ not to be missed.
Make it Funky is one of Toronto's largest Breaks & Live Funk Production Companies. ..WOW Z-Trip ROCKED Toronto
Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate with me as well as all of you who don't know me yet. It really was the greatest birthday of my life. Thank you to everyone who joined me in the lounge to celebrate. Hope you enjoyed the cake cookies and lollipops and thanks to my GF and Sis for providing all the goodies and taking care of all the responsabilities my drunk ass couldnt handle. I love you guys! What a fun night!
Where do I begin? After more than two years of setting lineups, beating the streets, night after night, spreading the good vibes, working to break new artists and funk n breaks djs, with varied styles of beatboxing, mixing, cutting, scratching and instrumentation, it all built up to this night. Many DJs have perfected one or two of the above mentioned skills but Z-Trip is the one DJ on the planet whose boundries are completely limitless and skills on the turntables capable of redefining genres. On Saturday night we witnessed this first hand.
Let me tell you about my awe inspiring evening. First off Z-Trip and his friend Josh are troupers. When I picked up Z-Trip at the airport, Z and Josh were exhausted having slept only 2 hours after an all nighter from partying in vancouver the night before. To top it off the hockey game was on on the plane. Josh was telling me that he was sleeping full mask pillow blanket dealio and when a goal was scored the guy behind him slammed on the tray. hahahaha that would suck so bad.
I should say Z comes across as one of those really relaxed people that just vibes good energy and has a zillion funny and interesting stories to tell regardless of his sleep state. We went straight to Fresh. mmmmmmmmmm Fresh or as z-trip called it "Grounds to move to Toronto". Smoothies, rocket fuel, budda bowls, green goddess and some sweet potato fries later we were all feelin like a million bucks. We zoomed over to soundcheck where the band had left for dinner and we needed to move the setup cause originally the keyboards were up front and Z in the back and that just wasnt gonna work. Once we got it set it was on!
KC Roberts and the live revolution came back and played around with Z-Trip on the decks. Fantastic to see the live jam come together from plan to performance. So here we are as the event was about to begin.
Angus Robinson jumped on the decks and was playing some amazing stuff but for some reason the volume was low in the back. I went over to Vince the incredibly helpful and amazingly knowledgable soundman and asked what the deal was. on a typical Saturday they turn up the intensity over the course of the night. We couldnt have that this was Make It Funky, we wanted the people to shake thier shitters from startup to lights on! So after a short discussion the sound was boosted! Angus got the vibe goin dropping some really funky stuff and playing very well with his new serato(Ill be there soon!). Angus I need to know what that "So much trouble in my mind" track was!
Next up was KC Roberts. I was really impressed with thier range of tracks. I hear what people are saying about the r&b type stuff slowin down a bit, but I think part of the way the band works is to take you on a journey through thier set and the valleys make the peaks that much greater. Im a sucker for a fun horn section and a funky drummer and this band has both.
I was super drunk thanks to everyone in the place for buying me jagr after jagr, tequila after tequila, liquid cocaine after liquid cocaine and corona after corona. Im sure there was more but Im a bit fuzzy on just how many trips I took to the bar. Id also like to thank you all for the super headache I woke up with the next morning;) .
THEN IT WAS TIME FOR THE MAN HIMSELF Z-TRIP!!!! well sort of lol. Z-Trip was on his way back from the hotel (which he probably got a whole 10 minutes at) with Jay Cleary when they arrived at the back door to hear KC Roberts playing Popcorn which was the tune that Z was to drop in on. He bolted through the crowd to the stage and jumped in true champion styles. Letting the band drop out one by one after a fantastic lil jam to the James Brown stylee. So now Its Z-Trip alone on stage with however many people there were drooling with anticipation for the onslaught that was about to come. Tune after tune you would hear people screaming or the familiar OHHHHH! as arms flail in the air in every direction moment after moment. Starting with some sick reggae "erbs come around"(not sure who by) some of my favs from the night were the Johnny Cash "Ring of Fire", "Gonna Prove", "Sweet child of mine mixed with stevie wonder" definately my fav of the night, doors, hendrix, nirvana, beastie boys, frikken love the "No, No No', Fat bottom girls killed it, but my total favorite tune of the night was "Im your puppet" its like a 50's/60's tune not sure who its by. Then finally the band rejoined Z-Trip on stage to celebrate with some live "I know you got soul" remixin which was SOOOOOO Fantastic! Cheers to Z-Trip for knowin how to rock a party right.
Next up was Big League Chu who always does it proper. He prepared some really funky tunes for the night and the people stayed all the way to lights on to hear them drop. I was up in the green room chillin out by then so I didnt get to hear as much of chu as I would have liked. I was thrilled to hear Z-Trip and Josh both repeat many times over and over "What a fantastic day". Knowing the whole ordeal and lack of sleep situation I was amazed that we were all still hanging out and chillin in the green room well past 4:30. Z-Trip was super stoked about the show and really showed his love for Toronto. You can count on seeing Z-Trip and Make It Funky doing shows in the future as he is really welcome here anytime.
Id like to thank everyone who helped to make this event something super special. It really was everything we could have asked of it and that was all due to the hard work and dedication of the Make It Funky Crew. Jay Cleary, Big League Chu, Robb G, Lady Linzee, Mickey D, Zirca, Erica, Brad, Shannon, Angus Robinson, Adam Addison, Laura, Dylan, and all the people Im missing and should be slapped for leaving out(sorry its late as I write this), all these people bust thier asses to make these shows happen, and they consistently provide the quality of entertainment that you deserve. It takes a lot of energy to make these events happen and we do it from the heart but it only works when we all come together to make it happen. Its nights like this that make it worthwhile and give us the drive to move forward. Turning 30 is a really nostalgic point for me. Especially with regards to Make It Funky. I was always a band kid travelling the world over to see over 500 concerts through the years. Then I got into breaks and life was just turned upside down. About two and a half years ago I got a chance to build my dream. That dream was to show people that good music can move you, to put on one stage both bands and djs to add in visuals and the change the scenery so it doesnt get old. To put the party back in party, where people can smile and have fun, dance like no one is watching and push the boundries of where the music takes us. Today looking back I feel we are reaching that dream and like a stream that leads to a river we are lucky enough to be able to work with pool of artists so wide and varied in scope, that we can continue to keep it fresh while we to bring back the DJ faces you know to funk the party. When I think of what MIF is all about I will look at this night as inspiration to always keep moving down new paths but never leave the funk behind as its the groove that oils our gears.
Make It Funky events have always focused on the more organic side of the beat. Seeking out DJ's that fuse electronic music with original melodies and vocals creating that new piece of art that makes us go wild on the dancefloor track after track. Z-Trip is that DJ.
This was that night.

A-SKILLZ

Adam 'A.Skillz' is one of Sussex's most talented beatmeisters. At just 23 years of age, Adam has been producing music and DJing for more than five years. Since starting out playing drums in the rock band Sabio, which for several years took him on regular tours across Europe, Adam has fast gained a reputation for himself as studio wizard, musical maestro and tantalizing turntablist.
His incredible deck talents involve fusing funk, hip-hop and breaks with his own style of highly innovative scratching and sampling, and have won him prime-time slots across the UK including FabricLive, Ministry of Sound, The Apollo, 93 Feet East and Chew The Fat in London; Supercharged, The Boutique, Catskills, Ocean Rooms and The Event in Brighton and Blowpop in Bristol, as well as gigs across the world playing at major events and music industry parties such as the Hit Factory Studio (New York) and Transmusicales Festival (France).
A.Skillz has also been a busy boy in the studio with his impeccable engineering talents being utilised by high profile labels such as Defunked, Arista, Curious Records and Planet Funk. He also co-produced the flip to the UK No.1 smash hit "Breathe" by Blu Cantrell with fellow producers Ed Funk & D Rok, as well as "Feel The Love" with Funk n' Flex. Adam has also mixed and engineered compilations for the UK's leading dance music magazine Mixmag, and has written and produced tracks for pop groups T-Girl and Tribe.
Over the past two years, Mr Skillz has been working in the studio with a certain other Brighton breakbeater and scratchmaster: Finger Lickin's very own Krafty Kuts, producing their highly acclaimed album "Tricka Technology". With a nod towards De La Soul, Ugly Duckling, Gorillaz and Jurassic 5, it is true Finger Lickin' Funk, and the future certainly looks bright for these two! Enlisting the talents of some of the world's best hip-hop and funk artists including Kurtis Blow, Real Elements and Ashley "Freakpower" Slater, the duo have created an album that just oozes a summertime vibe full of hip-hop beats, party licks, deck tricks and spontaneous skits.
He is currently working on his first solo artist album which will see him team up with DJ partner Krafty Kuts as well as other major names for some seriously hot collaborations! You read it hear first: you'll be seeing plenty more of the amazing Skillz in the future!
wordPEOPLE www.myspace.com/wordpeoplemusic
Sometimes timing is everything. Driven by the common objective to assemble an all-live manifestation of a love for beats, rhymes and life, wordPEOPLE was formed in summer of 2003.The band's desire to record the material that had matured in front of live audiences materialized when 91.5fm The Beat hosted the "Rhythm of the Future Showcase" in Kitchener, Ontario. An outstanding performance of original music earned wordPEOPLE first prize in the group performance category and $18, 000 in studio time. The resulting recording, a five song EP entitled Vol. 1: PLAYONWORDS, musically and thematically fulfills the emcee's lyrical declaration; it is a mix of "the physical and digital, the sensible and whimsical". With current online distribution through Maple Music, wordPEOPLE is poised to continue the soul mission to make music that satisfies the mind and body.
wordPEOPLE's positive vibe and live instrumentation is at the heart of their ability to entertain audiences of all ages and musical interests. wordPEOPLE has garnered the attention of festival promoters, propelling the act into the public eye at such events as the Nike "Who Runs This Town?" rock festival in spring of 2005. In the same year wordPEOPLE was well received at the 2005 Oakville Jazz Festival, where festival-goers eagerly embraced the contemporary urban sounds alongside a line-up of traditional jazz ensembles. More recent dates have seen wordPEOPLE share the stage with God Made Me Funky, Mr. Something Something, Ike Turner, The Pocket Dwellers, K'naan, Sekoya and Nick Ali's GruvAsylum.
Currently recording their first full-length offering set for release in mid-March 2007, wordPEOPLE continues to perform for steadily increasing and receptive crowds, proudly delivering carefully crafted Canadian urban music.
THANK YOU! What an incredible two years for the fledging collective! Make it Funky has raised the bar in Toronto by putting the party back in party. The collective has focused on introducing new acts and old favorites to the Toronto scene and has developed a loyal following. Some of the outstanding acts presented to date include: DJ Krafty Kuts (Brighton, UK), Afrika Bambaata (NYC), Malente (Hamburg, Germany) Freddy Fresh (Mineapolis), DJ Czech (Vancouver, BC), Mat The Alien (Whister, BC), Greg J (San Francisco, CA), Vinyl Ritchie (Victoria), Fort Knox Five (Washington, DC), Wax Romeo (Calgary, AB), Smalltown DJs (Calgary, AB), All Good Funk Alliance (Washington, DC), MC Killa Kella (London, UK), The Jimmy Swift Band (Halifax, NS), God Made Me Funky (Toronto, ON), King Sunshine (Toronto, ON), High Plains Drifter (Toronto, ON), Chameleon Project (Toronto, ON), Moses Mayes (Winnepeg, MB), Kobayashi (Montreal, PQ)... and the list goes on! And it all started by a group of fans who had the foresight and determination to bring the Canadian underground funk scene & burgeoning international mid-tempo break scenes together, re-definining dj & live events in Toronto. We would like to take a moment to thank all our fans and supporters who have come out to make Make It Funky what it has become. We could not do it without your unwavering support.
