Hello Friends for perhaps the last time.

Today is the last day in the life of BB's Compact Discs.  It is a sad turn of events to be sure, but we did all we could to prevent it.  That said, here's the good news.  We have plenty of CDs & DVDs left in stock, and I have nowhere to put them once we close up.  So...  I'm marking all CDs & DVDs down to just $1 each!!  That's right, all CDs & DVDs are only a dollar!!!!!!!  But try and get here early, as I imagine once the word gets out, things are going to move out of here pretty quickly.

Oh, we're also selling off our DVD players and display racks, so come and get it!!

Hello Friends,

We are quickly approaching the end of the line for BB's Compact Discs.  Assuming the landlord does not change the locks in the middle of the night, we have until Saturday to get what's left of our inventory sold off, or moved out.  So that means, you should all come in anc help clear us out!!  Everything is now

75% OFF

which means most stuff will cost well under $5.  You have 5 days left to come grab whatever you can!

Hello Friends.

As you all know by now, BB's will soon be closing its doors for good.  It looked like it would have to be this weekend (the 30th), but we are trying to put it off for a little longer if we can.  There are still tons of great CDs & DVDs here, and we want to get rid of as much of it as we can before we lock up.  So we are going to try and squeeze a few more weeks out of our lease before we get the boot.  That said, everything in stock is now a whopping

70% OFF. 

Yes, 70%!!  That basically means you can probably get 4 or more CDs for the price you'd normally pay for 1!!!  Anyway, come help us clear this stuff out and grab some good stuff while it lasts.

Hello Friends.

As many of you know, BB's will be closing down in the next 2 weeks (I know, it sucks).  During our 20 years of music store greatness, we've accumulated some pretty cool swag.  Among them, is an autigraphed AVETT BROTHERS promotional poster that the boys signed during the meet & greet they did here at BB's for the EMOTIONALISM release.  It is double sided and on VERY heavy cardstock with album art on one side and photos of the Avetts on the other.  These were only sent out to the stores that the band was using to promote the record, and even then each store only got a couple of them.  As big an AVETT BROTHERS fan as I am, I know that there are more deserving Avett devotees out there.  So in an effort to raise some funds to clear out some of the money trouble the store will be left with, I've decided to hold a raffle for the poster so a lucky fan can get it.  Details are as follows:

Q: When/Where can I get a raffle ticket to win this awesome AVETT BROTHERS swag?
A: Tickets can be purchased only @ BB's Compact Discs, and will go on sale as we post this message.

Q:How much are tickets?
A: Tickets are $1 each or 5 tickets for $3.

Q: When will the winning ticket be drawn?
A: The drawing will be held on August 30th, so you don't have a lot of time to get tickets.

Q: How will the winner be contacted?
A: It would be easiest if you were at the store when we drew the winning ticket.  If the holder of the winning ticket is not present, I guess we can post the winning number in the BB's Myspace blog, but it really would be easier if you came to the store the day of the drawing.  Oh, you can also put your name and phone on the tickets we use for the drawing.

Hello All.

It breaks my heart to announce that we have not been able to successfully raise the funds we need to keep BB's alive.  It looks like the constraints of our current lease, mixed with the deteriorating state of the shopping complex we have been in for the last 20 years, created a hole we could not dig ourselves out of.  So after nearly 2 decades of serving Greensboro and beyond, BB's Compact Discs will be officailly going out of business at the end of August.

That said, we need to move the rest of the CDs/DVDs we have in stock before the end of the month.  We are upgrading our already huge 50% off to 60% OFF until further notice.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for other special offers/events as the last day draws near.  I hope to go out with a bang.

GREENSBORO -- I hate that sign.

I see it in the window, and I can't help but think of all the other independent record stores, all those cool spots of conversation that helped anchor our city, give it personality and draw every discerning music hound I knew.

School Kids. Spins. The Record Exchange. Crunchy Music Stuff. Gate City Noise. All gone.

Now, I read that sign in the window — those block letters in black and aquamarine that read, "HELP SAVE YOUR LOCAL MUSIC STORE"— and I realize the place many of us know as BB's could make that list.

I stop Duncan Dunn . He's the owner, and I find out I'm like every other customer. He gets stopped three or four times a day, and in that wide-eyed expression of regret, they ask, "What's going on?''

Well, it's crunch time for BB's Compact Discs, Greensboro's last remaining independent record store.

Dunn's store needs to pinch every penny, hold off bringing in any new releases and sell off inventory — now at half price — to get enough money to move to another location.

After this weekend, Dunn will know whether he has the money he needs. If not, BB's will close, ending a business that has buoyed music — and music lovers — in and around Greensboro for 19 years.

Dunn needs to move. His lease expires in 18 days, and in the past year, BB's business has fallen by 50 percent as Quaker Village Shopping Center, run by a big corporation out of Chicago, has become an array of empty storefronts.

So, after living paycheck to paycheck for the past six months, he's looking to relocate near UNCG, along Battleground Avenue or near his old haunt close to Guilford College.

Ask Dunn about his chances, and on a scale of 1-10, he gives the chance of success, of reinvigorating his business and pulling off a potential move, a 4.

Yet, he says he's optimistic.

"I have to be,'' he said the other day, "or I'd be too depressed when I came to work. I hold out hope, but I have to be prepared for what could come."

Look what has come.

Record companies have become conglomerates, big-box retailers sell discounted CDs next to washers and racks of clothes, and digital downloads on the Internet — particularly singles — are becoming more popular with each passing year, despite having a sound quality as scratchy as a transister radio.

Meanwhile, between 2006-2007, the most recent figures available, CD sales have dropped by nearly 21 percent. So, music spots like BB's are placed in the cross-hairs of commerce, where employees like Colt Weaver field questions about the sign outside.

"Most people say it's tragic,'' said the UNCG sophomore who started shopping at BB's in eighth grade. "One girl who came in here just flipped out because she has been coming here for four or five years.

"So, for most people, it's tough to believe because this place has been a safe haven for music fans for so long.''

Two years ago, Dunn bought the store named after guitar great B.B. King from Darryl Deitsch , a Duke grad who started it in 1989 with his longtime friend, Brad Boyson.

Deitsch got out because he worried about feeding his family on an income based on the precarious whims of the music industry. Now, Dunn worries about the same thing.

Dunn is 32, father of a 13-month-old son he and his fiancée named Yorick Dorian. Like any parent, he has bills to pay and clothes to buy.

But Dunn is an old-school music hound.

In his hometown of Savannah, Ga. , he loved nothing better than flipping through the racks of CDs and vinyl records and finding some hidden gem at a tiny place called State Street Records .

So, he wants BB's to survive.

He started working there 13 years ago , in a two-aisle hub of musical knowledge, where he could talk about his love for Wolfmother while listening to Ella Fitzgerald and have someone stop by the counter to ask, "Hey, do you know that song, 'Too Drunk To Fight' from the White Knuckle Truckers?''

That's much better than yet another question about the sign out front.

I hate it. And Dunn does, too.

Hello Friends,

As we get ever closer to the end of our current lease, BB's is nearing the point of no return.  Like I said last week, we've raised some money towards our goal of moving/keeping the last record store in Greensboro alive, but we still have a long way to go before we're safe.  So as a final desperate measure, we're cutting our prices once again.  Starting Tuesday the 12th of August, EVERYTHING at BB's will be a giagantic 50% off!!!  That means that there are some GREAT deals on CDs and DVDs here.  We're talking a fraction of their former price! 

Please come and take advantage of this final push to save BB's, and grab some great/cheap music in the process!!

Hello Everyone,

Now that we are in the midst of August, I thought I would let all our friends know how the "SAVE BB'S CAMPAIGN" has been going.  The short answer is "not great".  While we were able to raise some of the money needed to move last month, we are still a LONG way away from where we need to be. 

As a last ditch effort to keep the last record store in the triad from having to shutter its doors forever, we are expanding our clearance sale into August and giving everyone an extra 10% off everything in the store (making it a whopping 40% off!!). 

Unfortunately, if this does not help us get to our goal in the next few weeks, we are going to have to announce a "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS" sale. 

PLEASE help keep the last local record store afloat!  There are still LOTS of great CDs & DVDs to be had, and now that they are 40% off, there's no excuse for not buying them!!  Anything you can do will help.
