Off to America next week (Denver & Pittsburgh) to do 'Lost & Found' sets (so expext Northern Soul/50's R&B, maybe some Rockabilly & Ska - dont expect anything new to be played!). The 'Greensleeves Document' is out on Monday February 9th 2009 (in the UK & the US). Really enjoyed doing this (with MC Brother Culture on vocal duties) as I have always been a fan of Greensleeves records especially the 80's as is covered on this release. Many thanks to Brother Culture on this release as he sounds great riding classic Greensleeves dubs! 'Lost & Found' at Madame Jo-Jos (with Keb Darge) goes from Strength to Strength (last Saturday being the busiest ever night!!). Get there early though as the dancefloor gets so full its hard to find room to dance sometimes! Other dj dates coming up are at The Jazz Cafe in Camden Town, London (Andy Smith's Northern Soul), 'Da Doo Ron Ron' in Brighton (Komedia) - 60's Girl Group night - all records have to have a female lead vocal! and the Cully Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Sadly my good friend Shel Shapiro passed away in the early hours of Sat night/Sunday morning - 28/29 July. I first met Shel at a Portishead after show party in LA. He came up and spoke to me when I played an Ultramagnetic MC's track and we became friends ever since. He Dj'd with me whenever he was in the UK and I'll always have great memories of taking him to the 'Notting Hill Carnival' which blew his mind!. He will live on through my Dj sets as the voice behind 'DJ Andy Smith Rockin the Set' etc. - RIP - Keep strong Talya.

Ok...another blog....enjoying the Market Place night playing the 80s tunes (I pulled out 'Bassline' by Mantronix, 'King of The Beat' by Pumpkin, 'We Need Some Money' by Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers,' Your'e The One For Me' by D-Train, 'Love Injection' by Trussell, 'Rewind' by Johnny Osbourne, 'War Is In The Dance' by Frankie Paul) - all great memories for me (and Nick that I do the night with) and these tunes just dont get played enough in my book. Next one is 12 July (Market place is stones throw from Oxford St Tube)
Thanks to Keith Lawrence (& congrats on your new family addition!) for last Friday in Brixton - The Myth bar was nice and a great crowd (nobody asked for any 'shandy' new R&B nonsense so that was nice!) - Great to hook up with Brother Culture too!
Saturday at Madame Jo-Jo's was great as ever - This night is just such great fun to DJ at - I can play great 60's Soul, Ska, Jump Blues & Rockabilly to an 'up for it crowd' - And its not too anal - I'm happy to play some big Motown & Stax etc - As Keb (Darge) says 'why do you want to DJ anywhere else in the world when this night is so good'. Nuff Said !
So upcoming is Dublin, Edinburgh (60's only), Glasgow (60's only), Bristol,' Lounge On The Farm',' Lovebox' & 'Womad' festivals. The next Cargo night in London is on 6th July with my mate Smoove (live), B.D.M (Live) & some great dj's (Beanz & Teepee).
Been to a few gigs receintly - Went to The Nextmen LP launch at Cargo which was good and saw KRS-1 & Marley Marl at The Forum last Sunday - KRS rocked it as I figured he would. How great it was to hear 'Criminal minded'! - More memories!!
Oh... I have done a 'Fania All Stars; remix with Keith Lawrence (as mentioned above) which should be on the Fania remix LP due to come out in September (there may even be a cheeky 7" 45 of it before then too!)
Take care all - keep enjoying good music!!
Andy Smith
P.S - Thanks to Gladdy Wax for inviting me to play on his sound at Notting Hill Carnival later on this summer on the Sunday afternoon (26/8) - It should be good. Gladdy has a monster sound at the top of Portabello Road (Roots Reggae & Ska is the order of the day - no shandy R&B so dont ask for it!)

Ok, I'm going to use this Blog thing to actually write a blog so I think the first thing I want to talk about is how many DJ mix CD's (let alone 2 Dynamo Productions LP's & one DJ Andy Smith 12") I have to put out before people (mainly lazy promoters) realise that I havent worked with Portishead for the best part of ten years so there is no need to put 'Portishead' all over the flyers with big 'P''s everywhere. I do my own thing now! - I realise that 'P' were big and they just want to get people in through the door but how many other DJ's have put out 6 DJ mix CD's under there own name and still have to trawl around the old Portishead dinasaur! Dont get me wrong I was happy working with them (and realise that is why I am where I am now) but I dont work with them anymore (the next LP will not use any samples and will be completely live) so there will only be a lot of upset people when the next LP comes out that I did nothing on (Will the 'P' disapear then ?????) - Does it say Darren Emerson (Underworld), no it just says Darren Emerson -Whats the difference?
Anyway, with that off my chest, thanks to all those people I bumped into in Australia and New Zealand (Best Gigs were both in New Zealand by the way - Wellington & Napier!) - Madame Jo-Jo's is still going well (Martin Freeman guesting on 9/12, and Gladdy Wax on th 16/12) on Saturdays - its nice to be able to play plenty of Northern Soul, Ska & Rockabilly to crowd that appreciate it. Keb Darge is there every week as well (he is nuts by the way!).
Other gigs coming up to Christmas are in Mantova (Italy), & Weymouth (see dates on main page) as well as Jo-Jo's every week. - Cant believe its almost christmas - what happened to that year??
Cheers
Andy Smith
