Ready to exhale? We are. Here it is, the moment you haven't really been waiting for - the Landlocked Staff Lists for 2009. Revel in the past, learn from your history, catch up from '08 ya slowpoke! See ya next week for the triumphant return of New Releases! Thanks for making 2009 awesome! Ready? Go!

Jason's Best Long Players of 2009
-------------------------
Brothers Gross, Time To Go Now (Bad Track)
My favorite discovery of 2009. And they're from Indiana to boot! Punk-informed power-pop, musically and geographically right between the Stooges and Shoes: the perfect band? Their 7" single is super sweet too.

Smith Westerns, S/t (Hozac)
Chicago kids making Bolan-esque glam on a shoestring. It shouldn't work.

Ty Segall, Lemons (Goner)
This San Fran guitar wizard released a lot of music this year. I think he's in some sort of race with Thee Oh Sees. Lemons is his 2nd LP, the first is a bit better but it's from 2008. Get them both if you like the aformentioned band, and/or good raw riffage and echo-laced vocals. His performance at Gonerfest this year was too good to put into words.

Bad Sports, S/t (Douchemaster)
I knew I'd like this one before I even split the shrink with my thumbnail. Three Phil Seymour looking bros on the cover in striped shirts standing in a pee-stained alleyway. Truth in advertising. They're from Denton, TX and I guess they're sort of a side project of the Wax Museums if that means anything to you.

Thee Oh Sees, Help (In the Red)
More reverb-saoked goodness from thee Bay Area. This band can do no wrong in my book at the moment. Don't be afriad of their daunting and ever-growing discography. Start here or with the Master's Bedroom LP on Tomlab. If you like thee rock and roll music, just jump in somewhere. You'll thank me.

White Wires, S/T (Douchemaster)
Dumb punk rock songs about love and stuff, with melodies so stupid simple that they seem like they should have been thought of before, but delivered with such spirit and wide-eyed love. This is what the Crickets would sound like if they were three Ottawa dropouts raised on doo-wop and surf music.

Jeffery Novak, After the Ball (LMN)
Solo joint from Cheap Time mainman. More of a whimsical Anglo-crackpop vibe compared to his band's stuff. He plays all the instruments; sounds like XTC, Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers etc. Unfortunately it didn't stay in print long.

Kurt Vile, Childish Prodigy (Matador)
I'm a little baffled that this LP was not better reviewed in the muso-crypto "press". His rep exploded and perhaps there was a pre-emptive/premature backlash. Good songs and lyrics, good uh... atmosphere, sound like Tom Petty exploring some new directions in his basement. Probably the most played LP at Landlocked this year. Come in, we'll play it for you.

Night Control, Death Control (Kill Shaman)
This is the project of some guy who used to be in some hardcore/emo band called Emery. Sounds horrible, right? Right. But somehow I accidentally played this and I'm glad I did. It's a diverse grab bag of styles, many synth or piano based. Lots of drum machines and sinister bass squiggles. Reminds me of a one-man Faust and Bowie's Berlin-era music.

Strange Boys, And Girls Club (In the Red)
Another Landlocked store favorite. These Austin brats play a bluesy brand of goodtimes/badtimes rock and roll music, and aren't affraid of throwing a Fats Domino cover into their live set. I have high hopes for them in the future.

Too good not to mention: Half Rats, Demo; Fresh & Onlys, Debut and Grey-Eyed Girls (Castleface / Woodsist); Jacuzzi Boys, No Seasons (Florida's Dying); Bare Wires, Artificial Clouds (Tic Tac Totally); Rock & Roll Adventure Kids, Hillbilly Psychosis (?); So Cow, S/T (Tic Tac Totally); King Khan/BBQ, Invisible Girl (In The Red); Black Lips, 200 Million Thousand (Vice); On Filmore, Extended Vacation (Dead Oceans); Dinosaur Jr., Farm (Jagjaguwar); Odawas, The Blue Depths (Jagjaguwar); Group Doueh, Treeg Salaam (Sublime Frequencies)

Jason's Best Short Players of 2009
--------------------------
Boys Toys - Girls Like You 7" (Spin the Bottle)
Half Rats - Throw it Around 7" (Culture Cast)
Two great singles from two great bands out of Lafayette.

Trouble in Mind (label) Various singles
They're all rad especially the White Wires and Charlie & the Moonhearts singles.

Davila 666, Pingorocha Y La Diva Rockera (Douchemaster) & Primero Muerta 7" (Horizontal Action)
Two killer singles from Puerto Rico's golden boys.

Others:
Mayyors - Deads EP (Hurling Man)
Buzzer, Teacher’s Pet (Tic Tac Totally)
Jacuzzi Boys / Woven Bones split 7" (Needless)
Jeffrey Novak, Home Sweet Home/Three Sisters 7" (Sweet Rot)
Ty Segall / Ohsees split 7" (Castle Face)
Real Estate, Fake Blues 7" (Woodsist)
Personal & the Pizzas, Brass Nuckles 7" (Bubble Dumb)

Jason's Best Old Players of 2009
------------------------
Zero Boys, Vicious Circle / History Of (Secretly Canadian)
The Quick, Mondo Deco (Radio Heartbeat)
Kim Fowley, One Man's Garbage / Another Man's Gold (Norton)
Breakaways, Walking Out on Love (Bomp)
Sonic's Roundezvous Band, Too Much Crank (Devil's Jukebox)
Death, For the World to See (Drag City)
Michael Hurley, Parsnip Snips (Mississippi)
Horribly Wrong, C'mon and Bleed With... (Eradicator)
George-Edwards Group, 38:38 (Galactic Zoo Disk)
Pisces, A Lovely Sight (Numero)

Heath's Top However-Many
------------------------
I normally end up blurbing pieces that the other guys don't on purpose, but this year saw a lot of my favorites belonging to me alone, regardless - so be it. Lots of their picks are great too, I just wanna highlight some more!

Deradoorian - Mind Raft EP (Love Pump)
Tussin soul from an Armenian angel. Gorgeous layered vocals that play to her heritage, be it accidental or subconscious. She also plays in Dirty Projectors, but I won't hold it against her. Probably my most played release of the year.

Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle (Drag City)
Its been a long, hard road for Bill and I, and I think we've finally come to an understanding. We haven't dug eachother much for most of our lives but now, I think we can finally be best buddies. Just stay away from my lady friends.

Destroyer - Bay of Pigs EP
A two song, twenty-one minute EP that explores a completely new universe for Dan Bejar. He calls it ambient disco. I call it the best thing he's done in years.

Megafaun - Gather, Form & Fly (Hometapes)
Mountainman indie-folk with just the right amount of unbridled experimentation. Great harmonies, great vibe.

The XX - s/t (XL)
The make-out album of '09. Shockingly mature and sparse for such a band of young'ns. Soulful, but achingly dark.

Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Glassnote)
An undeniable pop album from these Frenchies. The world is catching on.

Gentleman Losers - Dustland (City Centre Offices)
Second album by these Finnish brothers. Fragile, sad, miniature and graceful. "like a ballroom orchestra recorded inside a snow globe." That's pretty good.

Marmoset - Tea Tornado (Joyful Noise)
Fans of Marmoset past shouldn't be afraid, this is a great album filled with plenty of great Marmoset moments.

Bear in Heaven - Beast Rest Forth Mouth (Hometapes)
I was really glad when Pitchfork gave this a good review because we normally do not agree. It pleases my inner shoegazer, electronic dude & record store nerd.

Heath's Fave Live Moments of '09
------------------------
I see a lot of shows. Its really hard to choose. In roughly chronological order.

Gentleman Jesse + Paul Collins Beat @ Bear's Place (Jan 2009)
There was a snowstorm. It was midweek. But a small crowd came out and was completely floored by this amazing performance from a legend and the winner of Jason's album of the year for last year. Power pop lives!

Lambchop @ Anna's basement in Nashville, TN (February 2009)
An intimate basement show from the always magnificent Lambchop. Now here, almost a year later, it makes me wish even moreso that I had seen the late, great Vic Chesnutt touring w/ Silver Mt Zion recently.

Bonnie Prince Billy & Lou Barlow instores @ Landlocked (March/April 2009)
Two legendary performers do us a super kind favor and pop in for amazing live sets. Oldham ad-libbed some Coug over breakfast and Lou played amazing acoustic versions from his entire catalog.

Dinosaur Jr @ Bluebird (April 2009)
Wow. Total sonic annihilation. J is the man, the myth, the legend.

Here We Go Magic @ Cinemat, Buskirk, ACLFest
Lucky enough to see HWGM at ever-increasing capacity shows 3 times in '09. A great band with a very bright future. Bring it on.

Balmorhea & Tiny Vipers @ Bear's Place (June 2009)
Two beautiful albums and gorgeous hushed live shows.

Entrance Band @ Russian Recording (July 2009)
The skinniest man alive playing the fattest riffs. Third eye salute!

Kings Go Forth @ Video Saloon (August 2009)
The best soul/funk album of 2010. I brought them through town and they completely destroyed and won over every single person in attendence. Luaka Bop is putting out their album very soon.

Endless Boogie @ The Bishop (September 2009)
I love their album. Its totally record store rock. Black Oak Kraut? The 4 other dudes in attendence agree.

Thee Oh Sees @ Festers (September 2009)
The last show I ever saw at Festers (hurrah) - They set up their own PA upstairs and slayed a writhing mess of bodies. If you were lucky enough to be close, this is probably on your list too.

Jack Rose @ The Bishop (September 2009)
Lucky enough to catch the most amazing contemporary acoustic guitarist one last time before he sadly passed on, far too young, this past month. Absolutely mesmerising.

Bon Iver @ Austin City Limits Festival (October 2009)
Watched from sidestage with Lance Armstrong (!?!?) as Justin and his band play to thousands of awe-struck fans in a freak torrential downpour. This might be the optimum way to experience his music.

Grouper / Polvo / Damien Jurado / Tiny Vipers / Mountains / Early Day Miners @ Tanned Tin Madrid (November 2009)
Hanging out and absorbing amazing sets from all these wonderful acts in Spain. Hot damn! Absinthe blinded and ecstatic.

Honorable live mentions: final Impossible Shapes show, Carolina Chocolate Drops, DM Stith, Larkin Grimm, Neil Hamburger, Drakkar Sauna, Hold Steady, Grizzly Bear, Tammar, Nomo, final Tremendous Fucking show, Deerhunter + No Age, Woods, Davila 666, Sufjan Stevens, Blitzen Trapper, Hacienda, Califone, Coke Dares finale.

Heath's handful of SOUL/FUNK/JAZZ picks
------------------------

Akira Sakata & Chikamorachi - Friendly Pants (Family Vineyard)
Best legit free jazz of the year!

Lee Fields & The Expressions - My World (Truth & Soul)
As good as any Daptone record.

Mr Chop - For Pete's Sake (Now Again)
A favorite future producer bangs it, Pete Rock-style.

Black Dynamite - OST & Score (Wax Poetics)
Wow - the soundtrack is almost as bad-ass as the movie. Blaxploitation lives?!

Natural Yogurt Band - Away With Melancholy 2×10" (Jazzman / Now Again)
A futuristic funky soundtrack to nothing, YET.

Chin Chin - The Flashing, The Fancing (Def Jux)
Modern 70s disco-funk done right.

Heath's fistful of ELECTRONIC / HIP HOP picks
------------------------

Juan Maclean - Future Will Come (DFA)
"Happy House" is one of my fave tracks of the year.

Junior Boys - Begone Dull Care (Domino)
Another amazing album. The next Pet Shop Boys (thats a good thing)

Telefon Tel Aviv - Immolate Yourself (Bpitch Control)
A sad end (?), I love their glitch soul.

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2
Duh, it was worth the wait. Hip hop was dead til this.

Doom - Born Like This (Lex)
After all this time... still good.

Etienne Jaumet - Night Music (Domino)
All analog Goblin-throb produced by Carl Craig!

Tyler's Best New releases (alphabetical):
------------------------

The Big Pink - "A Brief History of Love" (4AD)
Boduf Songs - "Inviolate Projection, Blood From Rome" 10" (BlueSanct)

Chris Corsano & Virginia Genta - "The Live in Lisbon" LP (8MM)
Duet free jazz recorded atop a roof at dusk in Lisbon, Portugal, Summer, 2008; this LP captures two sides of fire-conjuring from Virginia Genta (of Jooklo infamy) on saxophone, flute, and vocals trading blows with drummer-extraordinaire Chris Corsano.

Cold Cave - "Love Comes Close" (Heartworm/Matador)
Loren Connors & Jim O'Rourke - "Two Nice Catholic Boys" (Family Vineyard)

Death - "For The Whole World To See" (Drag City)
This year, Death (NOT the defunct Florida death metal band) appeared out of a future long since passed, channeling the likes of guitar gods Eddie Hazel and Phil Lamott with a proto-punk, power trio thump that sorta sounds like, yet predates, the Bad Brains. It's almost unbelievable that an LP this good took 30-odd years to surface. Take advantage of the opportunity you've been granted and pick this one up.

The Flaming Lips - "Embryonic" (Warner Group)

Flower-Corsano Duo - "The Four Aims" (VHF)
A more varied album than 2007's blistering "Radiant Mirror" LP, "The Four Aims" is a demonstration of the Flower-Corsano Duo's extra-sensory operations on even greater planes - and I'm not talking about a simple minimalist-to-maximalist or soft-to-loud spectrum of dynamics - No, at times this is more akin to General Sherman's infamous 'march to the sea' - they've come to set ablaze everything in their path and when they run out of rations they're livin' off the land. This record presents you with five (eight on the 2xLP, for the discerning listener) completely on-the-fly cuts from these improvising shape-shifters that make you wonder if they ever have an off-night at all. This is raw psychedelia in every conceivable way and, aside from their other releases, there is truly nothing else like this out there. (Also released in 2009 - F/C Duo - "The Chocolate Cities" CD-R self-release - Highly recommended as well!)

Group Bombino - "Guitars From Agadez" Vol. 2 (Sublime Frequencies)
This LP is truly the golden child amongst the "world" music releases, both new and old, to appear this year (along with Honest Jon's "Open Strings" compilation); it easily ranks among the best output Nonesuch has offered in the past through their Explorer series, and is without question my favorite Sublime Frequencies document to date. Bombino is a leading exemplar of the Tuarez guitar style (see also: Tinariwen, Group Inerane), and here you'll find an a-side etched with an acoustic Saharan desert session (complete with camel grunts) existing in duality with the b-side's all-electric performance at a wedding celebration in Agadez (where things really get unrestrained). The LP is now unfortunately out-of-print, but a CD version is now available if you snoozed on its initial release.

Liturgy - "Renihilation" (20 Buck Spin)
While it maintains the sonic textures of classic black metal, the arrangements, subject-matter, and overall approach that Liturgy employs on "Renihilation" are a welcome departure from many of the now-trite staples of the genre's past. "Renihilation" manages to capture a certain primitivism in the face of complex song structures and their own self-proclaimed "transcendental" stylings (a la Wolves In The Throne Room and/or Weakling) that differ considerably from their other, more crust-punk leaning, US black metal contemporaries like Bone Awl or Ash Pool. Some of the instrumentals and interludes present on the album leave something to be desired, but the meat of this record is undeniable (See: "Mysterium").

Marmoset - "Tea Tornado" (Joyful Noise)
Thee Oh Sees - "Dog Poison" EP (Captured Tracks)

Bill Orcutt - "New Ways To Pay Old Debts" LP (Palilalia)
Bill Orcutt is truly a magicicada of a guitarist, hibernating for extended periods of time only to surface once in a great while to either confuse and annoy the hysterical or inspire awe in those he encounters through recorded mediums. Don't expect Harry Pussy version 2, though; these days Bill is hammering out (really) his own blues that's as jagged and raw as ever but now rests more comfortably alongside the lineage of late-period Fahey than "noise rock" or no wave.

Jack Rose & The Black Twig Pickers - s/t (VHF/Klang)
Though not technically Jack Rose's final album, this LP stands as a testament to his ever-evolving brilliance as a player and the sheer talent emanating from each of the individuals in the Black Twigs that contains the aura of a certain permanence. This is not merely a smarmy, appropriated modern "old-timey" album, but rather the result of immersion (much like Jerry Garcia's into the world of jug bands) and a true love and admiration not only for the music's historical past, but for their own pasts as well, including diverse explorations as far reaching as the experimental ensemble Pelt. Jack Rose, you will be sorely missed.

Tiny Vipers - "Life On Earth" (Sub Pop)
Daydream-inducing, meditative folk. Female vocals accompanied by dark, sparse arrangements that are altogether captivating. Stare into the abyss and let it take you.

Watery Love - "Debut 45" (Richie)
Watery Love has seemingly come out of nowhere with their "Debut 45" single on Richie Records, keeping alive the raw, unadulterated garage lineage of Rollins-era Black Flag, Brainbombs and Mecht Mensch.

Tyler's reissues/compilations/anthologies:
------------------------

Dock Boggs - "False Hearted Lover's Blues" LP (Monk)
Arthur Doyle plus Four - "Alabama Feeling" LP reissue (Rank and File)
Michael Hurley - "Armchair Boogie," "Parsnip Snips" LP reissues (Mississippi)
Abner Jay - "The True Story Of..." (MIssissippi) LP

Onna - s/t 7" reissue & s/t CD anthology (Holy Mountain)
Bleak, adrogynous shoegazing dub from early 80's Japan that brings to mind The Velvets' own 'White Light' guitars and the early drummer-less incarnation of A Certain Ratio. The CD features guitar work from the then-young Michio Kurihara and choice tip-on gatefold packaging with a thorough (yet distant) biography written by Onna originator and graphic artist Keizo Miyanish himself. I'd love to see this turn up on LP in the future.

The Pyramids - LP reissues (Ikef)
Highly recommend for all fans of Art Ensemble of Chicago and the like. Way funky and way, way out.

Bishop Perry Tillis - "In Times Like These..." LP (Mississippi)
V/A - "Open Strings - Early Virtuoso Recordings From The Middle East, And New Responses" Box Set (Honest Jon's)

James (aka the new guy) faves of '09
------------------------

1) Akron/Family - Set Em Wild, Set Em Free
By far the best live show I saw this year, and the record is great too. These 3 amigos have an almost telepathic commitment to finding the groove. Scary and beautiful at the same time.

2) Kurt Vile - Childish Prodigy
Bossin it up, Philly style. Just scruffy enough to not give a fuck and nimble enough to fingerpick the slow jams.

3) On Fillmore - Extended Vacation
Les Baxter lounge gone all crazy. Like a soundtrack to "Lost" if there were no people or polar bears on the island, just all the existential dread that creeps into the jungle. Bird sounds that scare.

4) DOOM - Born Like This
Top notch return to form. Songs are shorter but wordplay is just as elaborate and fun. "Ballskin" is my favorite and yes I meant to say that.

5) Devendra Banhart - What Will We Be
OK, dude is hippie. Get past it. Resplendent, Nick Drake-ish folk songs bounce up against Bowie/T-Rex faux funk. Loose in the style you would expect from him, but not meandering in any way.

6) A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Ashes Grammar
Still kickin myself for missing their Bloomington show a few months ago. I have no idea how to describe this one, I guess like Stereolab with less autobahn beats. Truly strange and hazy, but affecting nonetheless.

7) Lee Fields & the Expressions - My World
Soulful soul, in the sense that Fields really sounds like he means it when pleading for your love. The band manages that delicate balance between loose and tight, a requisite for any great soul record.

8) The Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
Crazily inventive, sounds like the future beaming its best back to us here in the Stoned Ages. The vocals, which annoyed me with previous DP stuff, are the strength here.

9) King Khan & the BBQ Show - Invisible Girl
Fun, fun, fun, bloozy and boozy rock and roll. Mark Sultan steals the show from the King, giving a soulful edge to all the playfulness here.

10) Thao and the Get Down Stay Down - Know Better Learn Faster
Sometimes simple songs say so much. One of the few records where the toughness of the lyrics doesn't equal gloomy arrangements. Like Cat Power if she had fun rocking out once in awhile.

James' Top 10 Songs
------------------------

1 My Girls - Animal Collective
2 River - Akron Family
3 Empire State of Mind - Jay-Z & Alicia Keys
4 Two Weeks - Grizzly Bear
5 Actor Out of Work - St Vincent
6 Ballskin - DOOM
7 I'll Be Loving You - King Khan & BBQ
8 Stillness is the Move - Dirty Projectors
9 Body - Thao and the Get Down Stay Down
10 Freak Train - Kurt Vile

NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 12/22/2009
..................................................

Bad Sports - s/t LP (Douchemaster)
..................................................
Denton, Texas is the equivalent for Douchemaster Records of a bar you can always go into and always expect to get laid afterwards. In this case she's particularly young and hopped up on speed. If you missed their two singles from 2008, then you don't know about their major league hooks and their seemingly unchallenged quickness. Don't be surprised if this record reminds you slightly of The Reds or the first Marked Men LP.

Fine Tuned Button Sets (Busy Beaver)
..................................................
Our Landlocked logo buttons are a constant favorite. Our friends in Chicago at the Busy Beaver Button Co manufacture all of our buttons and someday we hope to talk them into letting us have a button machine in our store. In the meantime, if you need a perfect stocking stuffer for the musician in your life, consider these awesome badges that they designed that mimic vintage guitar amp knobs. We have three varieties of 2 oversized buttons each. Classy!

Rev. Louis Overstreet - s/t LP (Mississippi)
..................................................
Reissue of the Arhoolie LP recorded in 1962 at Overstreet's church inÊPhoenix, AZ with a slightly altered track listing. Includes two tracks previously unissued on vinyl. Recorded very live during a church service. Rev. Overstreet plays electric guitar and bass drum in his own driving and intense style, while his four sons and the congregation take care of tambourine, backup singing and hand claps. A powerful record of gospel energy and testament.

Clara Rockmore - Art of the Theremin LP (Mississippi)
..................................................
This LP, originally recorded and released by Delos International in 1977, features the eerily beautiful Theremin accompanied byÊpiano. A record of stark simplicity and emotional intensity. Mississippi is proud to present the first ever vinyl reissue of this material. Gatefold tip-on cover with extensive liner notes detailing the history and inner workings of the Theremin and Clara Rockmore. Presented by Shirleigh and Bob Moog.

VA - Nippon Girls: Japanese Pop, Beat & Bossa Nova 1966-1970 (Ace)
..................................................
Collection of Japanese '60s pop from the Big Beat International label. After their acclaimed GS I Love You volumes, it's the girls turn, as they examine the distaff side of the country's remarkable GS pop scene with Nippon Girls. 25 Tracks.

Hello party people. Heath here, back from a 4 week tour, a 4 week tour. The jetlag is gone but the post-tour blues is just kickin' in - or is it seasonal affective disorder? I visited the world's oldest record store (Spillers in Cardiff, Wales) along with about 25 other cities. But you don't care - cuz you were here, wondering where my witty posts about the weather were, right? RIGHT?

Anyway, the holidays are upon us, its unavoidable - believe me, I tried. We have tons of goodies that your loved ones want. From LP accessories (about as romantic as socks) to books, DVDs, our famous t-shirts, box sets (including that amazing Pixies Minotaur box, WHOA!), turntables, headphones, trading cards, and of course TONS of fantastic music! Plus we have a boatload of CDs on sale for only $10, including all 2009 releases from local lovelies Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar and Dead Oceans! If you have a special order to place, you best be doing it NOW if you want it on time...

..................................................

NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 12/15/2009
..................................................

Animal Collective - Fall Be Kind EP (Domino)
..................................................
To close out an incredible 2009 for Animal Collective that saw the release of their most critically and commercially successful album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, comes the Fall Be Kind EP. The EP features 5 brand new studio tracks that are every bit as lush and beautiful as those found on Merriweather. The year of Animal Collective continues.

Apache Dropout - 7" (Magnetic South)
..................................................
From the ashes of psycho-nauts Hot Fighter 1, as well as the Twisted Soul-Punk of John Wilkes Booze...APACHE DROPOUT has one directive - "A Call To The Wild" some would say... a fuzz drenched sonic assult - shoking lost souls into a Frenzied Lysergic Boogie! Their first vinyl release after two mouth-watering cassettes on Magnetic South.

Bonnie Prince Billy & The Picket Line - Funtown Comedown LP (Sea Note)
..................................................
Intimate live recording by Will Oldham and a young bluegrass band. Funtown is a place, as much as it is a place of mind. It was in this place, in a clearing and on the shores of a pond, that Bonny 'Prince' Billy and The Picket Line combined forces to play his music and their music and other people's music for a community of people to hear and watch and swing and step to. Live in front of friends and family is the way of Funtown. It was as fun as it sounds and more, in ways which have mostly been channeled down to the two sides of a groove and presented to you here, wrapped twice in full-color sleeves.

Landlocked Holiday Gift Wrap
..................................................
Over the past year we have seen a ton of awesome posters created by Dave & Stacy over at Mile 44. Perhaps you also saw one of their posters for shows such as Grizzly Bear, Camera Obscura, Conor Oberst, Sufjan Stevens, Built To Spill, Deerhunter / Dan Deacon / No Age, Califone, Blitzen Trapper, etc. We commissioned them to make us some hand-screened gift wrap for LPs and we are tickled with the results! We've concocted a truly cool reusable LP wrap that you will want to keep as art - check it out at the counter and give your presents that extra oomph!

Midlake - Acts of Man 12" (Bella Union)
..................................................
For those that were looking for an Xmas present consisting of new Midlake songs, look no further! The 2-song vinyl (Acts of Man & Rulers, Ruling All Things) is now available. A press release from Bella Union claims that the new album will swap out the 70s soft-rock vibe of its predecessor, 2006's much loved The Trials of Van Occupanther, for a more traditional folk influence. In a statement, guitarist Eric Pulido says, "We didn't want to make the same album as Van Occupanther, so we carried on moving and creating and pushing for a newer sound and emotion."

Pearl Harbor - Something About the Chaparrals LP (Mexican Summer)
..................................................
Pulling together strands of light, synthetic pop with the unmistakable damage of proximity to Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Mexican Summer is proud to present the first release by Los Angeles teens Pearl Harbor. Piper, Sky, and Cody create dreamy, ethereal melodies not dissimilar to heavies of the past few decades (Cocteau Twins, Lush), but with the doomed worldview of today's California, fallin' into the sea, creeping ever so slightly in the background.

The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!)

We're entering the waning days of the aughties folks, can you believe it? I can't. Seems like just yesterday everyone was jamming Prince's "1999" and talking about the looming Y2K meltdown. How will this decade be remembered? Don't ask me. I'm still trying to make sense of the 90s. But my more immediate problem is compiling my best albums of 2009 list. I need help! So much good music this year, of course. The problems is it never ends, with new discoveries every day. Drop in and remind me what good stuff came out early in the year. And send us your top 10 list if you make one. I'd love to see them. Maybe we'll post them up somewhere. We'll see.

Speaking of new stuff, there's one item of special note below: these insane Pixies box sets. There are two versions, the Deluxe and Limited. The former is crazy lavish. But the latter is by far the most elaborate and opulent box set I've ever seen. It's even signed by the entire band. And, yes, of course, it's very expensive. But this is the ultimate gift for the mega Pixies fan. Short of booking your own private show, I can't imagine anything better. Ask to see it if you're curious. I'm not even sure where we're gonna put this damn thing.

NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 12/08/2009
..................................................

Harry Smith's Anthology Of American Folk Music Volumes 1-3 (Doxy)
..................................................
FINALLY REISSUED on VINYL! In three separate volumes as originally released: Ballads, Social Music, and Songs. The importance of Harry Smith's work can not be overstated. Not only did he single-handedly save much of American folk music from extinction, but when he handed his record collection over to Smithsonian Folkways in 1952, he opened the floodgates for the American folk revival of the following decade. This is probably the most influential compilation ever assembled. Includes such immortal figures as Dock Boggs, Clarence Ashely, The Carter Family, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Sleepy John Estes and so many more. Essential is an understatement.

Dinosaur Jr - Pieces b/w Houses 7" (Jagjaguwar)
..................................................
The second single from Farm includes an exclusive B-side of Dinosaur Jr's cover of "Houses,"originally written and recorded by Elyse in 1968.

King Midas Sound - Waiting For You CD (Hyperdub)
..................................................
After two singles on Hyperdub, and a release on Soul Jazz, King Midas Sound's Waiting For You is the debut album from Roger Robinson and Kevin Martin's new group.

Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy 2xLP (Jagjaguwar)
..................................................
This is the definitive double-disc set which brings together Okkervil River's ground-breaking Black Sheep Boy project in its entirety, including the original album, the seven-song Black Sheep Boy Appendix EP, the song ''The Next Four Months'' (originally released on the ''For Real'' CD single) and other rarities.

James Pants - Seven Seals CD (Stones Throw)
..................................................
James Pants is a one-man band whose humorous dance-funk music style is informed by early-'80s R&B/soul and old-school hip-hop as well as whatever thrift-store gear he comes across in his sleepy hometown of Spokane, WA.

Pixies - Minotaur (Artist In Residence)
..................................................
Available in both Deluxe and Limited editions. Minotaur is curated by legendary graphic designer Vaughan Oliver with photographer Simon Larbalestier. Includes all five Pixies' studio albums (Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova, and Trompe le Monde) in the following formats: 24k gold plated CDs; Blu-ray audio mastered for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 24/192; DVD mastered for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 24/96. Unreleased Pixies 1991 live performance from Brixton, on both Blu-ray and DVD, mastered for 5.1 surround sound at 24/192 and 24/96, respectively. All discs are housed in a custom designed folio. Also includes a 54-page book. The Limited edition adds all the albums on 180-gram virgin 12" vinyl, cut from the original analog tapes, plus a 96-page book of Oliver's and Larbalestier's work, a 12" x 19.5" print, and two double-sided fold-out posters measuring 48" x 36." Each copy of the Limited Edition is individually numbered, and hand-signed
by every member of the Pixies and Vaughan Oliver.

Tricky - Maxinquaye [Deluxe Edition] 2xCD (Island)

..................................................
First single from their upcoming album Contra, with a non-album B-side.

Tom Waits - Orphans 7xLP (Anti)
..................................................
Originally released in 2006 on CD, this is the seven disc vinyl version. Only a couple in stock, and they ain't cheap. Speak up if you want one.

The xx, "Basic Space" b/w "Blood Red Moon (Demo)" & "Islands" b/w "Do You Mind?" (Young Turks)

Hey, what it is? How are things going at Landlocked you ask?

Dandy, swell, peachy keen for the most part. The new releases are slowing down for the year (with some very notable exceptions, some of which are
below). Heath is still galavanting across thee Olde Worlde with ye Early Day Miners. And I never thought I'd think this, let alone admit it in public, but I'll be happy when he gets back, mainly so I (Jason) can dig in to the boxes of used vinyl that are rising volcano-like in our basement. In the short term however, I'm looking forward to going to Cincy this Thursday to see King Khan & BBQ. See you there?

Thanks to everyone who came in last Friday. You made our Black Friday the blackest ever. And while we're on the subject of biz, let me remind you that we're always excepting gift cards from chain stores, matching them dollar-for-dollar. Sort of a gift exchange program. You ditch the mega-corp  gift card your well meaning aunt gives you for Kwanzaa, you get the music you want, we get to buy a giant barrel of mayonnaise. It's a win all around!

NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 12/01/2009
....................................................

Bad Sports – S/T (Douchemaster)
....................................................
Bad Sports are a three piece featuring members of Wax Museums and High Tention Wires. But they are a bit more playful, but don't be surprised if this record reminds you slightly of The Reds or the Marked Men LP.

The Bravery - Stir The Blood CD/LP+CD (Island)
....................................................
Featurng John Hill (who has previously worked with Santogold and M.I.A.). They supported Green Day on their 21st Century Breakdown Tour  in Summer 2009. A return to form is the word on the street.

Homostupids - Load CD/LP (Load)
....................................................
A tunnel ride through a reverb soaked youth hall that spreads confusion like manure in the spring soil. Fast, noisy garage rock.

R. Kelly - Untitled CD (Jive)
...................................................................
Ninth album from the R&B superstar. What more can we say? Still has the keys to our ignition.

Lost Controls – World Went Black / Contribute 7’’ (Barn House)
....................................................
Ex-Bloomingtonians now living in Austin, formerly of the mighty Bikini Spiders and the Horribly Wrong (don’t miss their reunion show Dec. 11 at the Bishop). Snotty catchy amped-up punk with just the right amount of synth. Sounds like it should. Dig the righteous 3D cover art and glasses.

Lucky Luke - Traveling For A Living (Mexican Summer)
....................................................
The brainchild of Simon Shaw, formerly of Glasgow legends V-TWIN, and Morag Wilson. Folky psych somewhere between Nico and Sandy Denny-era Fairport Convention. Limited to 500 copies.

Megasus – S/T LP (Wild Power)
....................................................
Four dudes who all work for Harmonix (developer of the video games Guitar Hero and Rock Band) decided to assemble a metal band that combines elements of titans like High on Fire, Slayer, Pentagram, and Karp. Featuring longtime Providence musicians—most notably BRIAN GIBSON, bassist for LIGHTNING BOLT (here showing off his own crushing drum skills)—the
group set out simply to have fun and write killer heavy metal songs.

Steve Moore – Fever Dream b/w 30,000 Feet Deep (Mexican Summer)
....................................................
Steve Moore is one half of instrumental duo Zombi, the bass player of Brooklyn heavy prog/stoner rock outfit Titan. “Fever Dream” is a pensive mix of Balearic synth pads with the ominous brood of Goblin’s Italian horror soundtracks. “30,000 Feet Deep” stays right up on the beat, softand alluring, yet potentially deadly.

Ty Segall – My Sunshine / Fuzzy Cat 7” (Trouble in Mind)
....................................................
This garage savant unleashes two exclusive tracks. The A-side, "My Sunshine" is a grungy anthem, while "Fuzzy Cat" indulges Segall's 'Anglo-philic' tendencies, channeling Roy Wood or Ray Davies' mad pop sensibilities thru his own hazy, reverb-drenched filter. One of four excellent new singles this week from the Trouble In Mind label.

Shannon And The Clams - I Wanna Go Home (1-2-3-4- Go!)
....................................................
The sound of a prom band in 1964 getting dosed with acid and having the sweetest lovelorn freak out. Imagine a brawling Etta James, backed up by the 13th Floor Elevators singing Shangri La's tunes. For fans of Thee Oh Sees, Nobunny, King Khan and BBQ Show.

The Vinyl Zone (get into the groove!)
....................................................

Flaming Lips – Embryonic (WB)
John Mayer - Battle Studies LP (Sony)
Whip It! - OST 2xLP (Rhino)
Tom Petty – Live Anthology (Reprise)

Shrinebuilder –S/T LP (Neurot)
Muslimgauze - Uzi Mahmood (Soleilmoon)

Hello Music Lovers. May I have your attention?

Let's talk turkey for a moment (ha! ack!). We all know that Bloomington is the center of the universe, or at the very least the spiritual and cultural omphalos of the civilized world. And as such, it's a special place.

Well, there's new and important local organization determined to keep it that way. They're called LOCAL FIRST INDIANA. Here's their website:
www.localfirstindiana.org. Check them out, sign up for their newsletter, throw them some scratch if you can. Or better yet, get involved. And, yes, we do have a vested interest in this. But don't we all? That's sort of the point. We're all in this together.

One other quick thing before the fun begins. We have these super sweet LP gift wrap sleeves designed and printed by our friends at Mile44 (mile44.com). Perhaps you've seen their gig posters around town lately. We haven't determined yet what these are gonna cost, but I wanted to mention them. Ask to see one, they're really cool looking. More info next week.

Okay, that's it. Have a safe and (full)filling Thanksgiving. Read on, the rest is gravy.

Hello kiddies. What it is? This is Jason.

For the next few weeks Heath -- aka White Light/White Heath, aka the man who usually writes these weekly missives from the Landlocked Bunker --will be traipsing across Europe a la Clark Griswold, as helper monkey for our bros the Early Day Miners. They're touring to promote their excellent new LP, /The Treatment, /out now on Secretly Canadian. This means at least a couple things. One, there will be far less Heath-rock played in the store for the next few weeks (you know what I mean), and far MORE Blue Oyster Cult! Also, I'll be handling the intro spiel to this (hopefully) useful little tip sheet we send out every week. And this is my pledge to YOU: I promise zero mention of the weather in the next few updates. Even if there's a blizzard, or it starts raining men, I'm not gonna talk about it.

There are many righteous live shows coming up in Bloomington, but one to which I'd like to call special attention. Tuesday (tonight?) at the Bishop: the Woes and Other Girls, both worthy bands I'm curious to check out. But, also on the bill, the mighty HALF RATS from Lafayette. I'm a babbling idiot over this band. They're too good to be real. Seriously. If your into swaggering, early Stonesy rock & roll that sounds fresh and familiar at the same time, be there!

NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 11/17/2009
...................................................................

Tori Amos - Midwinter Graces (Universal)
...................................................................
After nearly two decades writing and recording some of her generation's most emotionally powerful music, Tori Amos is releasing her first seasonal album, Midwinter Graces. Midwinter Graces will find Tori reworking and expanding on classic carols as well as developing some of her very own seasonal tracks. Tori grew up playing holiday carols at Sunday services and Christmas Day celebrations in her father's church. These were the songs that gave a young Tori her first taste of music, and now almost 40 years later Tori gets her own chance to reimagine classics like What Child, Nowell and Star of Wonder.

Annie - Don't Stop (Smalltown Supersound)
...................................................................
The long awaited sophomore release from the Scandinavian Pop princess. Both immediately listenable and utterly beguiling, this "pop with strange edges" is mainstream and underground, all at once. Sometimes expressive, sometimes funny, but always totally fresh and utterly human. Featuring guest appearances from Richard X and Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos.

Beak> - s/t (Ipecac Recordings)
...................................................................
2009 debut album by this new project from Portishead producer and multi-instrumentalist Geoff Barrow. He formed Beak> earlier this year with two fellow Bristol musicians, Billy Fuller and Matt Williams. The band has some pretty rigorous guidelines in place. They record all their music in one room and they don't use overdubs. The band wrote their entire album over the course of one 12-day session. In a statement about Beak>, Barrow says, "It's really good to create music under different conditions than you're used to."

Norah Jones - The Fall (Blue Note)
...................................................................
Norah has taken a new direction on the The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators. Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River's Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partners Jesse Harris & Richard Julian. Musicians include drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer).

Kid Sister - Ultraviolet (Downtown)
...................................................................
Kid Sister's long-awaited debut is, first and foremost, an upbeat and futuristic club record. Influenced by the fast beats and electronic soul of Chicago house music, "Ultraviolet" owns a roll-up-your-sleeves form of empowerment, where respect is earned rather than awarded on sex appeal. With Southern soul rapper Cee-Lo at her side on "Daydreaming," she escapes into a psychedelic, synthesized orchestra.

Rakim - The 7th Sea (SMC Recordings)
...................................................................
Highly anticipated release from the artist voted 'Greatest Rapper Of All Time' by the Hip Hop elite. The Seventh Seal is Rakim's first studio album in over eight years. Rakim says ''The Seventh Seal is my own revelation... my way of taking the best of what Hip Hop has to offer, what we as a culture and a community have to offer, putting my stamp on it and leading us forward while constantly respecting what we've already accomplished.''

Dave Rawlings Machine - A Friend of a Friend (Acony)
...................................................................
The much anticipated debut album from Gillian Welch's secret weapon, Dave Rawlings, includes appearances by Ketch Secor, Willie Watson, Kevin Hayes, Morgan Jahnig (Old Crow Medicine Show), Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes) and Karl Himmel (Neil Young), and of course, Gillian Welch. It's a coming out party for an unsung hero of American roots music.

Real Estate - s/t (Woodsist)
...................................................................
Real Estate waft in on vibes of hazy summers past. The New Jersey quartet cut the sleeves short and the pop smooth to shade you from the midday heat. Every song works its way to that part of your consciousness that reveled in the fleeting waves of freedom that eked in once classes broke and the sun lingered a little longer over suburban roofs.

Them Crooked Vultures - s/t (DGC/Interscope)
...................................................................
Them Crooked Vultures are DAVE GROHL (Foo Fighters, Nirvana), JOSHUA HOMME (Queens of the Stone Age) and JOHN PAUL JONES (Led Zeppelin). Nuff said.

VA - Forge Your Own Chains:Psychedelic Ballads & Dirges 1968-74(Now Again)
...................................................................
This compilation introduces a new direction for Now-Again Records and its owner and producer EGON. With the same detailed, no-stone-unturned approach he used for Deep Funk (The Funky 16 Corners, Cold Heat), he tackles beat-heavy global psychedelia with Forge Your Own Chains. Forge Your Own Chains showcases music from all corners of the world: Colombia, Nigeria, Sweden, South Korea, Thailand and Iran.

Hello Bloomie, how are you today? We're fine thanks for asking. As the year rumbles on, we see less and less new releases on the run up to the holiday season. That means its time to start preparing your end of the year lists as well as your shopping lists! Thanksgiving is still a little ways away but we wanted to give you fair warning that yes, we will be closed for tofurkey day. And yes, we will be open for Black Friday - the biggest shopping day of the year - probably with some surprises! You're going to have to wait and see what that is going to be...

This past year we helped push the world premiere of the D-Tour film at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. "D Tour" follows former Bloomingtonian and Rogue Wave drummer Pat Spurgeon on the road with his indie-rock group as he balances the demands of being in a band with the challenges of having a failing kidney - dialysis, dietary restrictions and searching for a living-donor match. It also covers a smaller story arc of local favorite Evan Farrell and his wife Jill. And now it is coming to PBS / WTIU! Tuesday, November 10th - TONIGHT @ 9pm on the program Independent Lens. Please check it out. It might just change the way you feel about that simple organ donor question on your driver's license... Watch a preview here: http://www.vimeo.com/5313950

...................................................................

NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 11/10/2009
...................................................................

Bibio - The Apple and the Tooth (Warp)
...................................................................
Hot on the heels of his highest selling, critically-acclaimed album Ambivalence Avenue (Best New Music on Pitchfork), Bibio has assembled a companion album comprised of 4 all-new tracks and 8 remixes from luminaries such as Warp's own Clark, Friendly Fires' visual collaborator Rob Lee, as well as Bibio himself. From the clattering, beat-forward re-imagining of 'Dwrcan' by San Francisco's Eskmo to the babymaking, lush downtempo snap of Leatherette's 'Lover's Carvings' remix, to Bibio's own Parisienne carnival re-contextualization of 'Palm of Your Wave', The Apple and the Tooth illuminates the dramatic range of sounds and influences Ambivalence Avenue employs and portrays.

Doom - Unexpected Guests (Gold Dust)
...................................................................
Legendary hip-hop artist MF Doom digs into his vast archives to mix together some of his all-time favorite productions, collaborations and guest appearances. Whether it be along side legends like De La Soul, Talib Kweli or Ghostface, Doom shows why (as a producer or MC) he is one of the most in demand artists in music today. If that weren t enough Doom also decided to include in this collection some rare tracks that have never been commercially available before.

Echo & the Bunnymen - The Fountain (Ocean)
...................................................................
The 10th studio album from the veteran Liverpudlian band led by vocalist Ian McCulloch and guitarist Will Sergeant. Along with Teardrop Explodes and Wah! Heat, Echo & the Bunnymen were part of the early-1980s Liverpool scene that was somewhat misleadingly dubbed Neo-Psychedelic. While the Bunnymen bore elements of the Doors' dark, mysterious sound and decidedly abstract lyrics, Punk played as much of a role in the development of the band's music as anything else. What marks their sound more than anything else, though, is a soaring, anthemic quality that can be quite affecting.

Wyclef Jean - From The Hut, To The Projects To The Mansion (MRI)
...................................................................
Wyclef is hip-hop's unofficial multicultural conscience; a seemingly omnipresent activist. The utopian one- world sensibility that fuels Wyclef's political consciousness also informs his recordings, which fuses hip- hop with as many different styles of music he can get his hands on. Wyclef returns from a collaboration with DJ Drama with a mix tape featuring all new material.

Lissie - Why You Running EP (Fat Possum)
...................................................................
New EP from the American singer/songwriter, produced by her friend Bill Reynolds, who just happens to be the bassist in Band of Horses. The five songs are stacked with the kind of billowing and rustic sentiments that come from broken hearts that have been patched as well as they can be, gaining that scar tissue that never makes them like new again, but gives them a refined personality, one that's subtle and powerful all in one fling.

Love - Lost Love (Sundazed)
...................................................................
Love Lost was recorded in 1971, during a brief, little-known period during which Love was signed to Columbia. But after the band left the company, the recordings sat unreleased and unheard. The material is comprised of the unreleased Columbia sessions, plus 5 unreleased acoustic demos from the same period- captures Love in a transitional phase, charting the next step in Lee's idiosyncratic musical trajectory, following the lush garage-psychedelia of Da Capo and Forever Changes, and the bluesier direction of the hardrocking False Start and Out Here.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Xenophanes (+1)
...................................................................
The prolific guitarist and Mars Volta mastermind. Recorded in Mexico, Xenophanes is the first album which finds Omar at the helm vocally and lyrically, as well as musically. Sung entirely in Spanish, the album showcases a side rarely seen before, truly distinguishing this album from its myriad predecessors. Equal parts Mars Volta bombast, El Grupo Nuevo technicality, and a textural richness unequaled on prior solo releases, its a concept album, that tells a story about a character's journey through life, death and re-birth. Vinyl in 2 weeks.

Murder By Death - Finch (Tent Show)
...................................................................
An instrumental soundtrack to a book by author Jeff Vanermeer. The book reminded the band of Bladerunner - with spore-faced bad guys. Former member Vincent Edwards lent his hand at the piano, organs, and Rhodes. Each song is attempting to recreate a scene or mood from the book - the release shows the page numbers in the book that correspond to each track on the album.

Wale - Attention: Deficit (Interscope)
...................................................................
Debut album from the Hip Hop artist, who hails from Washington DC. Attention Deficit features production from Mark Ronson, Cool & Dre, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, 9th Wonder, Green Lantern and others. Includes the hit single 'Chillin'' featuring Lady GaGa.

The White Wires - s/t (Douchemaster)
...................................................................
The White Wires are a three piece from Ottawa. It's a perfect summer time record yet it is just in time for the holiday season. The White Wires have found a harmonious balance somewhere between the lands of goofy and cool, and their songs reflect that brilliantly. This LP features nine songs of maximum sing-a-long-ability without a trace of pretense. A couple of listens and you'll be planning imaginary BBQ's with The White Wires as your entertainment and guests of honor.

NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 11/3/2009
...................................................................

David Bazan - Happy Xmas 7" (Suicide Squeeze)
...................................................................
This is the 6th installment of Bazan's Christmas Singles Series. Two new examples of this master songwriter's ruminative, and, ultimately, hopeful approach to traditional melody and arrangement. The adaptations of John Lennon & Yoko Ono's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" and Wayne Coyne's "Say It Isn't Greensleeves (A Change At Christmas)" continue Bazan's Yuletide tradition in a style totally his own.

Julian Casablancas - Phrazes for the Young (RCA)
...................................................................
Debut solo album from the Strokes vocalist. The primary inspiration for the album and it's title came from the Oscar Wilde essay 'Phrases And Philosophies For The Use Of The Young'. Julian explains; "The Oscar Wilde thing makes fun of how superficial humans are - I was writing more about arrogance and shortsightedness" Helping Casablancas achieve his vision was veteran engineer Jason Lader and Bright Eyes multi-instrumentalist Mike Mogis.

Cold Cave - Love Comes Close (Matador)
...................................................................
Debut full-length from Cold Cave. Following on singles on Hospital Productions, Whats Your Rupture?, and Dais, as well as a comp of early material, Matador is now reissuing the instantly sold-out self-released album. The warm, rich synth pop sounds are laced with equal measures of romance and nihilism. Somewhere in these realms of negative hiss and out-of-body bliss, there is a peak awaiting all who enter. Recommended!

Arrington De Dionyso - Malaikat Dan Singa (K)
...................................................................
Some artists push the envelope. Old Time Relijun's Arrington de Dionyso eats the envelope and spits out an origami of sound. A collection of throbbing, hallucinogenic, trance-inducing trans-utopian cosmic post-punk sounds. Never one to compromise in pursuit of his twisted visions of the future of music, he not only rattles listeners with heavy grooves but he also sings every song on this album in Indonesian, with some of the lyrics being lifted from the poems of William Blake and passages from The Zohar.

Girls in Trouble - s/t (J Dub)
...................................................................
The songwriting debut of Alicia Jo Rabins. She marries her classical training and folk-punk sensitivity to her penchant for Jewish literature, mysticism and history. The result: pop hooks grounded in experimentation, subtle musicianship and a taste for ruminative lyrics. It projects an upbeat, care free feel which carries each track from beginning to end. Lushly produced with the help of Scott Solter (Spoon, Mountain Goats, Okkervil River). Artwork by Arriginton de Dionyso!

Guided by Voices - Suitcase 3 (GBV)
...................................................................
The 3rd installment in the series of unreleased Pollard / GBV tracks excavated from a suitcase of cassettes in his closet. Like the previous two volumes, Suitcase 3 includes 100 songs on 4 CDs in a box. Disc 4 is an acoustic jam session by Pollard, Tobin Sprout, and Greg Demos in 1994-95 (the period between Bee Thousand & Alien Lanes).

Jookabox - Dead Zone Boys (Asthmatic Kitty)
...................................................................
Dead Zone Boys, the third album from Jookabox (Indy-born David "Moose" Adamson), is love story meets psychedelic zombie-musical. The zombie part came easy: Moose grew up on the east side of Indianapolis in the 90s, an area plagued by constant recession, pandemic homicide, and racial tension. It was this frantic energy and violence that infused itself into the Jookabox experience while musically nodding to early Ween, Black Sabbath, and the King of Pop.

King Khan & BBQ - Invisible Girl (In the Red)
...................................................................
Their third full-length album. Invisible Girl will not disappoint the band's admirers or their devoted cult following. The album marks a return to the trademark Doo-Wop-laced, anthemic garage rock that earned the band their fame and their infamy. The record exhibits their effortless fluency in rock 'n' roll's tenets and traditions, but as Mark Sultan (otherwise known as BBQ) notes, it also includes a song so vile that it cannot even be mentioned.

Molina & Johnson - s/t (Secretly Canadian)
...................................................................
In this collaboration between Jason Molina (Magnolia Electric Co / Songs: Ohia) and Will Johnson (Centro-Matic / South San Gabriel / Monsters of Folk), each seem to hold the other's talents to the fire and elevate both performance and creativity. In the friendly sharing of ideas, Molina and Johnson become two poets' poets in a workshop to craft a singular, searing elegy.

Nirvana - Bleach [deluxe reissue] (Sub Pop)
...................................................................
This 20th Anniversary Edition has been remastered and includes an unreleased live recording of a complete February 9th, 1990 show at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. CD and LP versions available.

Nirvana - Live At Reading CD/DVD (Geffen)
...................................................................
Ranked #1 in Kerrang Magazine's "100 Gigs That Shook The World" and voted as "Nirvana's #1 Greatest Moment" by fans in an NME poll, Nirvana's historic 1992 headlining appearance at the UK's Reading Festival is one of the most bootlegged concerts in the annals of rock n roll. Now, fans will have an opportunity to own a pristine copy of that entire performance - color-corrected video from the original film with audio sourced from the original multi-track masters. Issued in a limited edition CD+DVD as well as DVD-only and CD-only configurations.

On Fillmore - Extended Vacation (Dead Oceans)
...................................................................
Once dubbed "the rhythm section's revenge" by Jim O'Rourke, On Fillmore is back with their most elaborate work. The duo is formed by bassist Darin Gray (Brise-Glace, Dazzling Killmen, Grand Ulena) and percussionist Glenn Kotche (Wilco, Loose Fur, Minus 5), who were originally hand-picked by O'Rourke as the rhythm section for his album Eureka and joined him on several tours and his next two albums. They make use of upright bass, unusual percussion, field recordings, vibraphone and various small instruments, exploring both repetition and spaciousness in the recordings. Joined by guest Dede Sampaio on bird sounds, Extended Vacation takes the listener on a strange, dreamlike journey.

Slayer - World Painted Blood (Sony)
...................................................................
The premier thrash metal band on the planet. Produced by Greg Fidelman and Executive Produced by Rick Rubin (the same team responsible for Metallica's Death Magnetic) the songs are intense and performed at a level only reachable by the masters of their craft. There is nothing backward-looking about World Painted Blood; it's the sound of a band effortlessly earning their relevance in 2010.

Swimmers - People Are Soft (Mad Dragon)
...................................................................
Philly based act is reminiscent of 60s British pop - hinting at influences such as the Kinks and the Velvet Underground while drawing comparisons to contemporaries Arcade Fire, Interpol, Joy Division and New Pornographers. The Swimmers debut release, Fighting Trees, garnered rave reviews from The Philadelphia Inquirer, Magnet, NY Times, Tripwire and Time Out Chicago making their Artist to Watch and Top Ten Year End Polls in 2008.

Themselves - CrownsDown (Anticon)
...................................................................
Doseone and Jel are back! A careful and vicious exhibition of mastered rap tactics and sampling ethics. Themselves' third album proper has been gestating in the gut of this seminal group for some time. It's both a return to form and a honing of what's come before (Subtle, cLOUDDEAD, Deep Puddle) - both the opus that these lionhearted two were always meant to make, and the album that their hip-hop-obsessed teenaged selves always hoped to hear.

Vitalic - Flashmob (Fontana)
...................................................................
Sophomore release from French DJ/producer Pascal Arbez-Nicolas. Flashmob contains 13 new tracks from the Dijon-based producer. "Terminateur Benelux" is a vicious, deliciously dirty aural assault, "Poison Lips" is a soaring disco tune buoyed by cooing female vocals and the title track is his most epic, dance floor igniting track yet!

Weezer - Raditude (Geffen)
...................................................................
Weezer's seventh album, the dictionary-defying Raditude, finds Weezer showing off their comic chops with goofy songs like "I'm Your Daddy" and "The Girl Got Hot." Produced by Jacknife Lee (Bloc Party, the Hives) and Butch Walker. Free bonus colored 7inch with purchase!

Yeasayer - Ambling Alp 12" (Secretly Canadian)
...................................................................
After 3 white winter months in upstate New York at the Marotta cabin, Yeasayer wrote and layered songs for their second album. The tracks were then transported to Great City in NYC for mixing and microscope. Out of these sessions came "Ambling Alp," which we elected as the first single for Yeasayer #2. The 12" single contains remixes by friends Memeory Tapes and DJ/rupture and is Yeasayer's first release on Secretly Canadian.

VA - Light: On The South Side (Numero Group)
...................................................................
Light: On The South Side gathers for the first time over 100 of Michael Abramson's photos taken on Chicago's south side in the late 70s. The 132-page hard back book features photos, an ephemera section, and an essay by Nick Hornby. Housed in a gorgeous slipcase with the 12X12 book is Pepper's Jukebox, a seventeen track compilation of the kind of funky Chicago blues heard from the stage and the Wurlitizer. The deluxe 2LP set is packaged in a sharp gatefold jacket with two inner sleeves crammed to the gills with label scans and stories from the bar stool. Amazing!
