The vampire occupies a special place in the horror genre with its sinister ability to drain its victims not only of their blood, but of their very souls. Thus rendered "undead" they must endure a painfully unfulfilling existance, feeding on the life force of others for eternity. Their menace is not merely to life and limb, but has a metaphysical dimension extending beyond the grave.

The vampire made its debut in English-language fiction with the publication of John Polidori's Vampyre (1819), but the classic of the genre remains Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) in which the sophisticated Count Dracula displayed some of the attributes that have become staples of vampire fiction today. His victims needed only to look into his eyes to be transfixed, mesmerized by his penetrating gaze.

This allusion to hypnosis which was all the rage in Victorian Europe, no doubt helped to sell a lot of books. The horrifying sexuality of the eternally-damned nobleman was probably an even greater selling point. Although erotic themes were generally repressed during this era, such primal desires can hardly be eliminated, and the Count was, after all, a villain.

Stoker's novel is not only filled with sensuality, but touches, however obliquely on themes of domainance and submission, bestiality, and group sex. The painless, non-healing sores on the victims' necks may even allude to syphilis, which was incurable and epidemic at the time of publication.

Dracula burst onto the pop-culture scene with Bela Lugosi's portrayal of the count in the 1931 film by that name. It was a role in which he would be cast many times, culminating with the 1948 release of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Although this type-casting may have hurt Lugosi's career, his Count Dracula has become a film icon. Over the years any number of actors have portrayed the count from Transylvania, including Christopher Plummer, Frank Langella, and Gary Oldman.

In 1976 Anne Rice breathed some new life (or un-death) into the vampire legend with the publication of Interview with the Vampire, the first of the very popular Vampire Chronicles series. More recently, Stephanie Meyer has revived the legend, if that's the word, in her Twilight Saga series.

Don't get excited. The N00B I'm referring to is me. It might seem strange that a veteran of one whole day of Vampires would be writing a guide, but sometimes only a N00B will know that seemingly obvious things might be a problem. I hope this is one of those times.

First, in case you are reading this somewhere other than the Whole Ed MySpaceBlog, Vampires is an old-school MMPORG from zynga games, playable on MySpace, Facebook, and possibly other social networking sites. It's very addictive. Stop playing and the other vamps will steal your blood -- but I'm getting ahead of the story.

Installing the app -- Nothing is installed on your computer, so don't worry about that. Apps are "installed" on your MySpace homepage, right there on the MySpace server. Simple. Painless. Safe. Follow the directions, should be pretty straightforward. The app uses Adobe Flash, so you may have to install or upgrade that. I think there may be some Java involved, too -- but I had no problem there, and I'm not sure.

Getting Help -- Of course you want to dive right into the game, that's why you installed it. There is actually a lot of help available beyond the FAQ. Click on the HELP tab, then (hiding in the navigation bar near the top) Forum. This is where you'll find answers to questions you didn't know you wanted to ask -- and you should do it right at the beginning. Pretty soon you'll be too busy to read the instructions.

Clans within the Vampires game aren't extended families or tribes like traditional Scottish clans. They are groups made up of one-on-one alliances. Alliances might have been a more descriptive word, in fact. If player 1 has clan members A, B, & C and player 2 has clan members X, Y, & Z and player 1 invites player 2 to join his clan all that happens (if player 2 accepts) is that players 1 and 2 are added to each others' clans. Other clan members (A, B, C, X, Y, Z) aren't affected.

So there's no reason to agonize over which clan would be the most advantageous to join. You're not joining a group -- you're building your own from scratch. Invite everybody. All they can do is pass on joining. Higher level players tend to understand that "there's no such thing as bad publicity," and you'll be amazed at the advanced items and advice you may receive from your new clan members.

New players frequently have problems with the mechanism for adding clan members. This is accomplished in part outside the game app through your MySpace (or FaceBook) page. Therefore, you have to have your MySpace e-mail and viewing permissions set up properly to allow new people to contact you. I'm no expert on this subject, but it's covered in more detail in the MySpace Clan Recruiting Guide.

If you prefer to use your MySpace page to share things with a small group of real-life friends, this may be a problem for you. I'm very new to Myspace, too so I'm not sure if they allow multiple accounts, but if people can't send you mail, they can't invite you into their clan. Be sure to post your details in the current Add Me thread.

There are a lot of useful (and not so useful) posts in the Community Created Guides thread. The Ones marked "Sticky" by the administrators always stay at the top. I found these three by Amalia especially useful. YMMV.

I confess to being a complete N00B in the social media world, but everybody has to start somewhere, right? I've done some blogging, first at Squidoo, then moving on to BlogSpot.

I like Blogspot a lot better, because it allows full use of HTML, as far as I can tell, while Squidoo prohibits Javascript, inline frames, forms, and a lot of other bells and whistles. I have enough trouble getting the code right without worrying about whether or not it's permitted.

I've been an Amazon associate for a long time -- since they only sold books. My theory is that people need help navigating the 75 million + pages whether they know it or not.

I don't hype products. How would I know what would be right for an anonymous web visitor? My target audience is people who are smart enough to realize that Amazon associates work on commission and that some will say just about anything. I concentrate on helping with navigation. You can read reviews from disinterested third parties at Amazon.com.

I want to wish a belated Happy Boo-thday to Cassandra "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" Peterson whose MySpace page was instrumental in deciding to try MySpace first and worry about FaceBook later.

Unpleasant dreams, Cassandra.
