I knew Seattle Weekly had good writers, but this piece by Sara Brickner... man. Not 100% sure we can live up to it, but we're gonna try.

Here's the opener:
The Foghorns, Product of Mexico, Proud Wonderful Me at Conor Byrne, 9 p.m.
The Foghorns' folk songs are the perfect remedy for chilly weather, lonesomeness and, I suspect, the common cold.

And then here's the write up:

The Foghorns

The Foghorns Like a modern-day Woody Guthrie, Foghorns frontman Bart Cameron has traveled all over this wide world, singing folk songs while meandering ever westward toward the region to which the folk music he plays can trace its roots. Last year, Cameron came to Seattle, added a couple locals to the band’s roster and wasted no time putting out a fifth album on weensy Wisconsin label Beefy Beef Records. The Foghorns’ recorded incarnation features minimalist, introspective strumming, judicious use of twang and a languid pace. New Foghorn Katie Quigley serves as Bart Cameron’s vocal echo, which lends a ghostly, somber feel to the music, doubling the emotional wallop of Cameron’s lovelorn lyrics. But this isn’t happy-go-lucky jug band music; by and large, these are woeful songs about the hard times. It makes sense, then, that Cameron tends to favor locales where the winters are dark, damp and cruel. His is not music to dance to. His is the kind of music you put on at the end of the party, just as the last few people are stumbling out the door, someone’s puking from accidentally drinking a big gulp from a can filled with cigarette butts, and you’re the last person up but can’t go to bed because your most lascivious friend is getting laid in your room…even though it’s your birthday. Sometimes, there’s nothing but the music to comfort you – and that’s why bands like this are so very necessary. With Product of Mexico, Proud Wonderful Me. SARA BRICKNER

Here are the lyrics to "Old Bachelors in Cleveland" from A Diamond as Big as the Motel 6. Sorry digital people-- the hard copy of the album has all the lyrics and cool artwork by Jessi Kempin.

........
Old Bachelors in Cleveland

By Bart Cameron

Wasn't I happy before you, and didn't I know how to breathe?
When you go someplace beautiful don't you gotta know that someday you gotta leave?
Old bachelors in Cleveland, I have seen them, living out their lives.
Old bachelors in Cleveland, and divorcees on weekends, they tell you love's a lie.

But oh my God they are lying. Oh my God my life's no longer mine.
And oh my God you make me happy, but without you I don't think I'd get by.

And I don't know the loneliness of one night stands.
And I know how to drink and I do not get out of hand.
But when it comes to morning and I see a strand of your hair,
and you are at work well the whole room drains of air.

And oh my God we are aging. Oh my God time is passing by.
Oh my God this was so easy when I thought living was waiting just to die.

Old bachelors in Cleveland, I have seen them living out their lives.
Old bachelors in Cleveland and divorcees on weekends waiting just to die.

KEXP just blew my mind. I got an email saying this was coming, but I didn't expect the thoughtful write up. I tip my hat to that place. www.kexp.org, truly a force for good.

Anyway, here's the link for the Song of the Day.

Old Bachelors on KEXP Song of the Day
Wednesday, October 28, 2009
Thanks for last night, everyone.
We just want to start saying thanks and never stop.

Last night was our first Tractor gig, and it was on a Tuesday night, and we went on at 8 PM to support our friends Jeremy Burk and Joe Pug. And, well, the fact that we had people sprinting from work to get there, the fact that our fans who got in late still paid to support a touring musician, well, that was amazing.

We wanted to give Joe Pug and Jeremy Burk, both of whom were incredible last night, a full house, and thanks to all of you, we did our part.

Anyway, thanks to the old fans, and to the new people. We're humbled.

And a word about Tractor Tavern: I talked to everyone who worked there, from the owner to the barkeep, and I've never met a friendlier, more professional group of people. Playing there really was a pleasure. So if you get a chance to ever see a show there, know that you're contributing to a great club.

KEXP, our local Seattle radio station, has been amazing. Now, they're adding one of our songs to the Song of the Day podcast. (It'll also be on the radio.)
Anyway, October 30th. The song'll be "Old Bachelors in Cleveland."

(Here's a link: http://kexp.org/podcasting/podcasting.asp#song)

Also, remember that Tuesday, October 27th, The Foghorns will be doing a stripped down set at Tractor Tavern in Ballard to support our friend Joe Pug.

And on Thursday October 29th, Foghorns organist/ slide guitarist Rich Quigley releases his album with the band Lost Weekend at the Comet Tavern. (Album is Silverback Mirror-- I suggest buying multiple copies.)

Thanks everyone, and thanks again to KEXP.

This is a very pleasant surprise. Kevin Cole on KEXP has placed "Old Bachelors in Cleveland" on the Music That Matters podcast. (volume 167)

Listening to the podcast is extremely humbling-- we are flattered beyond belief.

Here it is. Some great great songs there.

If you come to Cleveland, get to the Parkview. And get there on a Wednesday. Michael Bay puts on a blues jam session that is mindblowing.

And here's something more: last night, our gig at Wilbert's fell through. What did Michael do? He welcomed us to a blues session, let us play original, nonblues music, and we hung out with some amazing musicians for the evening.

Now we're staying one more night in Cleveland to play Sidetrack Cafe.

Thanks to Parkview for turning a nightmare into a highlight. And come out to Sidetrack Cafe if you're in Cleveland tonight and join us as we play with local Boogie band Madison Crawl.
