Black Jugular Mix - Read Between the Beats PlasticWrap Black Jugular 2 part 1 http://www.sendspace.com/file/36un6y part 2 http://www.sendspace.com/file/v2kebo There are some hiccups in the mix; here and there but I cut it entirely live so it makes sense why... it chills out a bit at times but that is intentional for the moments of 'longing'. You might feel uneasy listening to this, that means it's working; for the most part it is brutal and unwelcoming - right on. Gnar T

So the Boxes are gone, I plan on typing this up and mailing it or emailing this message to JoAnn Gora. If you have used the Co-Op boxes and/or just like the idea of them please put your name on the petition or give a short story.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a call to save the Co-Op Book and Music boxes once located at the Scramble light on Ball State Campus.
This monday the boxes were taken from the corner McKinley and Riverside and we should share our voices and sentiments of the importance that they have had the past 4 years to the Ball State community.
Students, Professors, neighbors and visitors of all walks of life have been affected and even inspired by what the Co-Op boxes have offered. Readers, writers, musicians, artists have used the boxes as a way to share with the community their works.
The Co-Op boxes have also stood as an example of local creative ingenuity, an entirely self-..preserved, self-created project built around a philosophy of selfless anarchy made for the people by the people. This is a simple but powerful statement to the growth and independent drive of the student body, especially poignant when actuated in a community that uses the boxes to anonymously share and perpetually challenge each other.
Category: Music
A long-time coming, it is always hard to make this list but now in it's
8th year consecutive year I have learned a pattern.  If you haven't yet
picked up the Honorable Mention collections posted in previous weeks
than please do so; you will find this was a good year in music and as a
whole a very diverse year with plenty of surprises; Lil Wayne, 80s Pop
and stripped to the core folk.
 I have to admit the top 20 releases might as well be without any order,
it got a bit hazy finding the best of the year.  What is important is
that these top 60 albums are each solid releases (in their respective
genres), some of these choices you might not agree with and that is
totally cool - but this is a list created by: 1st and foremost a music
addict (me) and 2nd: the influences made by running the record store,
talking to customers and learning about new bands, or simply trying to
do business and expose people to new things.
Enjoy and PLEASE:
respect the recommendations and visit the Village Green Records store
to return the favor - or at least see these artists on tour and support
them in how you see fit.
60-51
Walkmen
The past few years haven't been too kind to The Walkmen, their most
recent releases have been less than good; 2008 brought about The
Walkmen's best record since their debut.
Born Ruffians
So damned fun and their take on pop is just too damn Cute! But there
is still something inventive and imaginative here, if you need more
than pop hooks than you can rely on their progressive indie pop.
Extreme Animals
Vibrantly explosive with a technicolor array of Hip Ho, Spaz rock and
8bit disintergrated noise!  Oh yeah, this is an unforgettable journey
into goofy insanity! Its a BLAST!
Matt Elliott
It is odd to think that an album concerned with the historically
relevant Anarchist overthrow of the American government during the
Industrial Revolution can also be an artist's most emotionally
introspective release as well.  Though Matt Elliott is best known for
his electronic, noise, soundscape moniker Third Eye Foundation; On
Howling Songs; his 3rd release under his own name, he still utilizes a
writing style derivative of numerous genres and soundscapes.  Elements
of Spanish, Italian, Greek, Jewish and even Flamenco flourish
throughout this "folk" record with an international perspective,
borrowing from each with due-respect.
No Age
No Age are an intense guitar noise rock group but never bombastic in
the same respects as Health, Foot Village or Abe Vigoda, the songs have
a fertile intimacy; probably due to their attention to atmosphere and
controlled distortion.
The Roots
The Roots have always been excellent, and the past few years I have
been happy to see them broaden their scope of themes.  2008's Rising
Down has The Roots returning to their more political outspoken
direction, and in an aggressive, stripped to the bone way! The album
cover alone claims new angry ground. This was an album that is
impossible to ignore.
The Drift
The post-rock genre can be a ball & chain; many bands don't change,
don't grasp the importance of evolving within their sound, post-rock
has become a genre of content.  The Drift have progressed their sound
by tapping into almost minimalist directions, this is especially
apparent in their Neo-Classical almost modern jazz-like uses of brass.
Crystal Castles
I will give it to Crystal Castles that they have created/or purveyed
one of the most original sounds of the year. Sure 8bit music is now
running on it's 5+year but Crystal Castles used 8bit without it
sounding like a novelty; Crystal Castles was the genius group that the
8bit society needed. Bringing a new genre to the masses and making the
most inventive music of the year doesn't give you a one-trip ticket to
the top 10 in my book though, as a whole their album has some flaws.
Abe Vigoda
Like No Age but far more focused with a duel guitar attack, ricochet
riffs and walls of feedback backed by expansive drums and melodic
hooks.
Helios Sequence
Take the fine-tuned instrumentation of Unwound or Appleseed Cast and
add the listener friendly song craft of the chill side to Modest Mouse
and you are somewhere close to Helios Sequence. It is hard to sum this
group up from a couple of references, their song craft and understanding
of atmosphere is more align to the panoramic ambitious sound of
"Joshua Tree" or "Unforgettable Fire" era U2.
50-41
Primal Scream
- At first I disregarded this album as a pedestrian rock and roll
record; I obviously didn't hear the amazing depth and gorgeous
production that first time!  This is an album that has unprecedented
replay value, as a hook riddled rock album and as a powerful testament
of the soul.
Black Milk
This producer-cum-Emcee has released one of the most fully-realized
hip hop albums of the year. Black Milk realizes the importance of
understanding and knowing the past to move into the creatively into the
future, sometimes artists don't respect the past or they just become a
victim of nostalgia, with nothing new to add.
The Breeders
Seeing the Breeders return was yet another surprise to add to this
year's comeback giants, and they returned with a great souvenir of
their experiences.
Rio En Medio
Maybe it has been the winter months, but this album has become a
staple of late night atmospherics, watching the snow fall and
relishing in the desolate quietness of this town.
Silver Jews
These guys are the cooler-than-thou Alt. Country rock group headed by
wordsmith David Berman set out to bring poetry to the mundane and
equally make poetry mundane.  In the past week unfortunate news came
when David Berman claimed the end of his group Silver Jews and brought
tears to all indie cynics.
Torche
Torche has made their explosive sound into a more implosive sound
with precision and broad dynamics, this is aggression redefined. Much
of the album dates back to the early Queens of the Stone age raw rock
of power saw guitars and blasting drums.
Young Widows
- Melvins, Jesus Lizard and The Birthday Party meet in this cathartic
release via a hailstorm of chaos.  Former members of Breather Resist,
Black Cross, and National Acrobat forge an unruly groove and grind.
High Places
Music that is seemingly unfocused and a sloppy mess is usually a bit
hard to warm up to. High Places feel right at home in the
half-processed sound; as if they just stopped halfway in the middle of
the recording.  After multiple listens their sound becomes complete,
the sketch is plenty to convey their intent. With the lo-fi electronics
and female vocals I initially viewed them as a lesser Broadcast, but in
retrospect I shouldn't compare them to anyone, the execution of sound
is motivated by something entirely different.
The Dodos
Banjo has had an incredible resurrection in rock and roll in recent
years, The Dodos continue to breath life in this nickel stringed
instrument with their sophomore album Visiter.  Like Man Man, The Dodos
bang on everything and have a Hobo Americana folk sound, but with less
novelty and more sincere songcraft taste.
Foals
I describe Foals as the Battles meets Franz Ferdinand Indie-Math-Rock
band.  Their complex and technically amazing muscianship partnered with
exquisite production gives their Battles reference logic, but the
catchy almost Pop/Rock hooks give nods to Franz Ferdinand and other
Post-punk acts of the 90s and 80s.
40-31
Indian Jewelry
Effortlessly weaving walls of sound from feedback, electronics,
distorted percussion and drowned vocals, Free Gold! is a sonic
challenge to the senses.  Like My Bloody Valentine before them, this
music has hooks and emotional attitude it is conveyed in the music as a
whole, not just the lyrics.
Grampall Jookabox
One reputable trait (among many) that I like about Grampall Jookabox
is his live on the spot build up of songs is created by multiple
looping of guitar, drum and vocal layers and this is exactly the
technique he used produce his album. This is a odyssey of the bizarre, a
trippy pop expedition filled with songs of the like(insanity) and
Micheal Jackson.
Flying Lotus
Equal parts white noise, Dubstep, IDM, hip hop and drowned out Disco.
It really doesn't make any sense, but it is damn hard to turn off.  The
album starts off rudimentary and primitive, with little hints at
groove, beats and working melody but as each track concludes a common
structure begins to form out of the chaos.
Flica
The most simple, stripped to the core release on the entire list.
Imagine Nick Drake's Pink Moon as a hypnotic, minimalist piece of electro-acoustic IDM.  The fragile environment created from bells, guitars,
feedback and electro-drums is gorgeous.
Santogold
Nothing like M.I.A. but if you like M.I.A. than you will probably
like Santogold; I know, it doesn't make any sense.  If only pop stars
listened to Post-Punk they too could create awesome CDs like this! This
is everything I love about Pop: Crisp production, creative songwriting
and hooks abound.
Vampire Weekend
This album out "pops" and "out-cutes" nearly all the world of radio pop, unashamedly naive and fun. These New York City kids borrow from Afro-pop, reggaetón, and angular post-punk to create a timeless dance pop, proof that Indie music can garner Mainstream attention.
Cut/Copy
This is the type of album that can be defined by words like:
haunting, synthetic, organic and commonly described as a sound that
inhabits a space of atmosphere - odd considering this is a 80s
throwback dance album.  The mood and emotion of this album lurks in the
dark recesses of white noises and ethereal soundscapes.
M83
Awkwardly like Cut/Copy's In Ghost Colours by way of gravitating
towards the 80s. It seems 2008 brought the comeback of the 80s sound in
a big way - look at big names like Kanye West.  M83's Saturdays=Youth
hones in on the song structure with an uncanny pop sensibility never
before seen in a M83 release.  The music embodies the 80s aesthetics
without exploiting them, the music gives due admiration and respect to
the 80s sweetness but never looses touch of Anthony Gonzalez's sonicly
textured sound that we have all come to love in M83.
Jacaszek
Akin to the atmospheric, meditative soundscapes of Flica; Jacaszek
utilizes the washed-out strategies of Shoegaze, and melodic, highly
meticulously created wall of sound.
Lykke Li
Joanna Newsom was defined as music from another planet...and if this is
true than Lykke Li is from another Universe! The Swedish don't have a
reputation for making 'cool' musicians, but Lykke Li's creative output
is no where near the cannon of words like 'cool' or 'hype' but aligned
more to words like 'sincere', 'inventive' and 'brilliant'.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
30-21
The Bug
London's underbelly has been the breeding ground for bringing the
dubstep, dance, grime and militantly angry hip hop vigor into one
volatile cocktail.
Hercules and Love Affair
Disco Pop coming back in a big way on this record graced by the voice
of Antony from Antony and the Johnsons.  He trades in his delicate
Billie Holiday reminiscent voice to a boistorous Grace Jones
exhuberance.
El Guincho
Alegranza is the manifestation of having a diverse hunger for music; a
pallet of vibrant colors and tastes. With obvious heavy doses of
Animal Collective and a youthful ear oriented in Spanish music, El
Guincho has been at the naval harbors of the world stealing elements
from afro-beat percussion, calypso harmonies, psych Tropicália, doo-wop, steel drums and mixing it all up with production ala exotica.
Nurses
Everyone is now probably familiar with Fleet Foxes' waterfall
harmonies and delicate production, but if you were looking for a sound
with a little more dynamic and odd production than Nurses' sophomore
album is worth your ear.  A very joyous listen.
Mochipet
This album packs nearly every side/angle/direction of Hip Hop music
into one solid, hugely enjoyable experience. By far the most surprising
thing to acknowledge about Mochipet's album is this is coming from the
hands of a Breakcore artist; this is a guy more comfortable slice and
dicing beats and grooves into birdseed.  Nods to early East Coast Hip
Hop, London Grime, Dubstep, Glitch Hop, Gangsta Hip Hop, Mash-Up,
Ghetto Booty Hip Hop and just about everything else! A true example of
passionate love for music.
Fuck Buttons
Aggressive drone manufactured by circuit bending old keyboards and
child toys, more often than not this music causes people to react by
turning it down, off or throwing their CD-player out the window. These
people are not feeling the drone, they are not free to let the music
take them to the other plain of space.
Damien Jurado
After his heartbreaking, intimate album "And Now That I'm In Your
Shadow", Damien has taken a step in 2 directions: continuing his
dissection of Americana tales and storytelling and filling out his sound
incorporating full-band schematics common in his previous records. The
album is graced by rollicking drums and honky-tonk upright pianos, his
storytelling is still there but not as demanding on your emotional
senses. This album sees the same type of progression in Damien's music
as the one made by Iron and Wine with last year's "The Shepard's Dog".
School of Seven Bells
This has been a year of music that when written down and proposed I am
sure would seem very unwelcoming and demanding to any listener. This
has also been the year of pop hooks found in the most peculiar places,
amongst walls of noise and spacious caverns of commotion. This is an album that came out of the restlessness of it's counterparts; the drummer from Secret Machines, two vocalists from On!Air!Library! and a dash of magic dust from Prefuse 73's  Guillermo Scott Herren. "Alpinisms" is a caterwaul of drums, guitars, blips-beeps and gorgeous vocal harmonies swirling throughout, the space-pop album of the year.
Coconot
This is El Guincho's rock band project; so El Guincho is to Coconot
what Panda Bear is to Animal Collective or Atlas Sound is to
Deerhunter. El Guincho's "Alegranza" is without a doubt a eclectic
album but it didn't match the raw energy and unpredictability found all
over Coconot's "Cosa Astral". Though El Guincho gained more attention
and became the out of the blue indie sensation of odd pop, I personally
believe the later domestic released Rock Group Coconot is superior.
Department of Eagles
4 years in the making this is an album of delicate beauty, an ode to
the passed away father of Daniel Rossen from Grizzly Bear fame. Due to
this emotional connection some of the tracks have an intimacy common on
Grizzly Bear's "Yellow House" album, although this stands out from
"Yellow House" thanks to a more dynamic and epic (at times) production.
The sheer size and emotional scope of this album is especially
surprising despite only having 2 members in the band.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/uh2v7c

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
20-11
Calexico
The tales of the dustbowl and west keep rolling out from Calexico's
songbook. The songs don't rock so-much as they are meant to convey a
mirage of long-lost characters. The album carries a confidence and
reassured tone, uniting a diverse collection of featured artists -
Tortoise, Amparo Sanchez and Iron and Wine's Sam Beam.  These are
panoramic tracks searching for signs of life over a big sky desert,
what is found is warmth from an relentless sun.
Leila
Called "The most original album you'll hear in 2008" by many critics- that may be a tiny overstatement but maybe not! The album cover artwork is a fitting illustration of the deep world that is created by Leila's inventive
production. What is most rewarding about this exploration of downtempo
soundscapes is how immediately catchy the songs are and due to their
otherworldly qualities they pull you in. Leila comes from a long line
of expertise and correspondence - Tricky, Danger Mouse, Bjork and
Martina Topley Bird to name a few.
Hot Chip
Hot Chip were rolling on dubs, crunkin' out to some chill 8bit synth
dirty-mouth vibes. Now, they are slumming it up in the penthouse
nightclubs dawning the bright light of a rising sun, or finding soul on
sweaty wrestling mats. Sure, this doesn't make much sense, but they are
still amazing, and they want you to shake that booty; and that is all
that is important.
Beach House
A groove sanctuary. How can a band that barely does anything at all
be so damned invigorating, so  fulfilling? In a time of mass-media, ADD
production, Girl Talk pop overloading; an album of such simplicity is a
welcoming sound. Relying only on melodically simple hollow-body guitar
playing, dreamy keys and Wurlitzer, a unashamed use of ordinary
synthetic drum machines and a mournful, soulful female vocal is all
this 2 piece need to convey their depth of sound.
Goldfrapp
Like Beach House, Goldfrapp is a 2 piece that has stayed the test of
time by playing music for nearly 10 years - and during these years
their ever-changing sound is a document of their ever-changing taste
for something new.  After 2 sensual outings in Electro-Disco nightclub
land, The Seventh Tree was released to a unexpecting crowd. Trading in
nasty snyth lines and grinding bass gooves, Goldfrapp took a step back
to their debut album Felt Mountain with a subtle, organic folky
space-pop album.
Jean Grae / 9th Wonder & Jean Grae
South-African born Jean Grae released two equally superb records in
2008. The amount of anger this women has couldn't be summed up in one
album so she had to make 2! Her albums "Jeanius" and "Evil Jeanius" are
some of the most biting, effective and arresting Hip Hop albums since
El-P's Fantastic Damage or any Dälek release.  The 2 albums
are respectively quite different, and both deserve attention due to the
seperate directions she takes them.  The albums both have surprising
potent production, one forward thinking("Evil Jeanius"); while the other goes for a throwback sensation ("Jeanius with 9th Wonder).
Elzhi
 "The Preface" is Elzhi's proof of experience and veteran status,
authentic with more infectious beats and grooves than any other Hip Hop
record all year!  Black Milk pulls all the punches and truly makes a
difference paired up with Elzhi's rhymes! Elzhi's history with Slum Village and Lil Brother adds to his contact lists, everyone featured on this album
has a necessary time and place. VERY SOLID.
The Drones
Storming out of Australia, the Drones have followed up their
magnificent Gala Mill with an album of even more startling, bombastic
big-island rock songs.  Neil Young would be proud,  these Aussies have
found the sweet spot right in the middle of haphazard rock noise and
surgically focused rock-poetry. The vocal sit atop a throne Awash with
clanging cymbals, charging jangly guitars and driving bass lines that
seem to channel the late Tracy Pew of The Birthday Party.
Lindstrom
An album that is hard to define in words - an experience that must be
heard to be understood. Epic in scope and euphoric in a contemplative
manner. 3 Songs, 55minutes of music; Yeah.
Kanye West
I remember posting about Kanye West's debut album in my best of 2004 year end list, and everything has changed but nothing has changed about his place in pop music. It seems like we can still rely on his musical output to be a challenge to his audience as well as himself. "808 and Heartbreaks" in ways is much like "College Dropout", no matter how unexpected a move it is for Kanye to release a pop record like "808 and Heartbreaks" we need to expect the unexpected from him - he is the best kind of pop star: restless. "808 and Hearbreaks" was in a way the 'downer' album of the year, the best pop music always has more going on than simple pop hooks.  Today I saw a bumper sticker that said "Drum Machines Have No Soul", and this album as well as last year's "Sounds of Silver" from LCD Soundsystem immediatly came to mind; if people don't feel anything beyond pop thrills from these albums than I would argue they have no soul.  "808" is an album chronicling self-loathing and recent turbulent times, but it is refreshing to hear pop musicians recognize their inadaquecies, most of the songs on this album sound as if they belong in a diary out of the public eye. Maybe it is a bit sick to appreciate an album of such pain - but Kanye choose to release this album for us to see there is a little bit of Kanye in all of us and even pop stars feel.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

These last 15 albums are in no order - Meaning the Portishead album
"Third" shouldn't be recognized as the #1 album of the year, just as
part of the top 10.

10-0

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
2007-2008 has seen Nick Cave at his most prolific and ecclectic his
entire career, not bad for nearing "old man status", imagine what he
would've created if his life was never riddled with the distractions of
drugs and other addictions. Music seems to be Nick Cave's #1 vice; he
wrote a novelette, scored 2 film soundtracks, went out on the deep-end
with last year's Grinderman project and capped off the year with
"Dig!!! Lazuras Dig!!!" his most straight-forward, focused rock record
since... well ever!  Not his most epic or ambitious record, though it
sounds like a record 30 years in the making. Dig!!! is a great introduction to Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds sound, it has attitude, aggression, humor, horror and beauty.
Everything, Now!
Yes, Cheeky at times - but Crafty and Co. mean business - none of it
is meant to be a joke but it sure enough has a sense of humor.
Everything, Now! made that rock and roll record that you've been
waiting for; maybe you didn't know it, but somewhere in your gut,
loins, or soul a part of you has been hungry for it. Like the Nick Cave
album released this year, E,N!'s Spatially Severed is an album that
sounds like it took their entire career to make, other than a few
digressions the songs are more tightly composed - for a band that
sloppiness is their M.O., this says alot! Again, it is important to
re-iterate that this is unlike most 'Rock&Roll' albums, but sure
enough it will keep your foot-a-tappin' and your soul singin' along.
Spiritualized
Frail, fragile and at the edge of his life J. Spacemen can still
compose a song to flourish where most musicians only make clamor. In
J. Spacemen's hands simple acoustic songs are turned into elegant
almost baroque endeavors of swirling string and horn arrangements. I
don't believe in Angels, and I don't think J. Spacemen does either; but
when listening to some of these tracks you might think otherwise.
Notwist
Only a few artists in recent years have had to release a follow-up
album with such daunting expectations. After releasing "Neon
Golden"(now considered a masterpiece), Notwist distracted themselves by
hooking up with freak-folk Hip Hop crew and collective
Anticon/Themselves releasing a equally marvelous album under the
moniker 13&God. That project turned out to be a good way to buffer
the time between "Neon Golden" and 2008's "The Devil, You + Me". In
many ways their 2008 release surpasses "Neon Golden", the songs have a
dense quality, their less is more philosophy is viewed differently on
"The Devil, You + Me", it is still relevant especially in regards to
the delivery of vocals and lyrics. Notwist keeps things hidden, their
sound conveys vulnerability - but never in a manner that is whinny or
stereotypically emo. If you like "Neon Golden" and your looking for a
like sound but with broader arrangements, and a more colorful sound
pallet than this is a absolute must-have.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
Compared to "I See a Darkness", Bonnie "Prince Billy's 2008 release
"Lie Down in the Light" could have been called "I See a Brightness".
"Lie Down in the Light" takes the listener to yet another facet of
American traditional music, this time the rollicking up-beat sounds of
country and early folk. Will Oldham (aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy) has
fleshed out his sound with this release, after 2 albums of intimate,
stripped to the core recordings,"Lie Down in the Light" is a vehicle of
soul and hope powered by a full country rock band and tastefully used
choir accompaniments.
Q-Tip
Smooth.  Need I say more? ...Well, yeah I sort of do! This is the best return to form hip hop record I have heard this year. Q-tip ascends above his seminal Hip Hop group A Tribe Called Quest, rising to new heights with him a plethora of Hip Hop knowledge. His veteran status allows him to chill out, he doesn't rush what he wants to tell you, it all comes in due time.  Genre-bending is the name of the game on "The Renaissance", (a fitting name; as a statement regarding the current state of Hip Hop as well as a defining term for Q-Tip's return) Jazz, Soul, Afro-rhythms, Funk are each used tastefully - not to much his eclectic taste of Hip Hop and it's multiple incantations. Through all of these changes and different directions the record flows effortlessly, so once again all I needed to say was "Smooth".
Fleet Foxes
The surprise freshmen act of the year. If you are reading this than you have probably seen/read a shit ton about this band already. I don't know if I have much to add. Seattle's Fleet Foxes traffic in baroque harmonic pop. They draw
influences from the traditions of folk, pop, choral, gospel, sacred
harp singing, West Coast music, traditional music from Ireland to
Japan, film scores, and their NW peers. The subject matter ranges from
the natural world and familial bonds to bygone loves and stone cold
graves.-product description
Gang Gang Dance
"Saint Dymphna" is Gang Gang Dance's must expansive release to date, you must learn to be comfortable with unpredictablity and even revel in it to appreciate this album.  Each track is powerful and quite different in context to the other tracks on the album but it gels together; a pilgrimage through musical sound grooves exploring territories common in 80s sci-fi films. Imagine a film narrative that drifts from Legend, Return of the Jedi, Style Wars, Return to Oz, Labrynth, The Neverending Story, to Goonies and ending with The Explorers - a couple of kids befriending ancient Alien tourists this could be a analogy for the sound of "Saint Dymphna". Starting in the core of Earth the music shoots for the stars, taking the listener on a journey from the center of the earth, digging through layers of organic tones mashed with bizarre electronics and even more primitive vocal arrangements.
Al Green
"Lay it down" is one of only a few records that relishes in the bare
quality of music's stripped to the core ability to bring light to the
soul (shared only with Bonnie "Prince" Billy's "Lie Down in the
Light"). Al Green was joined by a slew of legendary musicians and a
equally respectable collection of young luminaries to bring to the
masses an album that is respectably only as good as it is all thanks to
the Reverend. The songs flow through many styles of soul,  some
introspective and wisely informed, others honest with the humble
reception that even old dogs can learn new tricks. Thanks to
?uestlove's ear for delicate production and keen knowledge of soul this
album is easily one of the most honest, sincere and crisp releases all
year.
Portishead
A reinvented sound, though Portishead's themes are still in check.  Portishead's "Third" is the only album in 2008 that explored the territories of sound common on the Leila and Gang Gang Dance albums, BETTER. This album summed up everything needed for re-play value: hooks, uncanny soundscapes, unpredictable musical directions, emotionally driven vocals and arrangements as well as a cathartic channeling of impeding doom and the ease of coming to these terms. Consider all of these traits, and than keep in mind that this is their 'come-back' record after over 11 years since their last legitimate release!  More than enough; Portishead met the expectations setforth by the world during their hiatas, with an album unlike anything they had ever embarked on before,  there is no denying "Third" could only be forged by Portishead.

*V*G*R* Honorable Mentions - PART 1 & 2 (added Feb. 1st)
So the Village Green Records is busy working on (and subsequently bringing to a collection samples from) the best of 2008 - We figured there was a ton of good music last year so it is important to give recognition to the other titles that are most definitely worth hearing but will probably be overlooked. So here is your chance to hear a tad bit of each of these - Pick up these tracks (over 150 here) and than stop by the Village Green to do some more listening!

Alphabetical order - these are all worth hearing - no need for ranking

REMEMBER! PLEASE RETURN THE GOOD-NATURED FAVOR BY PATRONIZING THE VILLAGE GREEN RECORDS STORE! (and helping these acts)

HERE IS MORE --- THESE WERE ADDED on FEB. 1st - 2009
(this was the final round of albums that didn't make it to the top of 2008-so definitely make sure to pick these up!)

Part 1

http://www.sendspace.com/file/n6uv0i
A.H. Kraken - Gnarly guitar rock noise - No Age meets Sonic Youth meets Nurse with a Wound.
Air France - "France" should be an immediate clue - Airy Disco with Emotions.
All India Radio - As a whole not too hot, but the 1st track is brilliant Pop.
The Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds - A absolute stunning collection of funky Rocking Afro Grooves.
Mary-Anne Hobbs - Evangeline - Mary-Anne Hobbs is the 'John Peel' for our generation, or at least the Brit's Generation, this phenomenal collection documents all the new directions of electronic music - Drone, Dubstep, Grime, etc.
Black Mountain - Wonderful retro rock, channeling Black Sabbath and Stooges equally.
Bound Stems - Neo-Folk-Rock with more Indie Rock but maybe Alt. Country --- Maybe whatever!  In general this is a solid album.
Brazilian Girls - 2008's release finds the B.Gs honing even more on their catchy electro-clash with international appeal sound.
Cadence Weapon - This Backpack Hip Hop giant comes back with some fun to get you dancing.

Part 2
http://www.sendspace.com/file/d0tnk7
Capsule - Yet another hardcore group taking their sound to a new direction, the past few years I have seen a progression in style from the hardcore scene much like what was seen in the late 70s when punk groups progressed to Post-Punk.
Ghostly Swim - A marvelous compilation of Ghostly International artists doing their ode to Adult Swim. As ridiculous as Adult Swim can be, they really take their music taste seriously!
Conor Oberst - Quite a surprise I must say! Never much of a Bright Eyes follower, but Conor's personal release is a document of mature song writing - for a dude that has always been a bit more mature than his age.
Council, Idaho - Local, Arrah and the Ferns allumni Carl Stovner's, week long recording before his exodus from Muncie is a good/albeit ROUGH document of post-Arrah songcraft.
Danger - The French Noise House craze might be over, but with groups like Danger I will be happy to keep an open ear!  This group is fucking marvelous!
DeVotchka - Euro-Balkan-Ruskee Chamber Pop way before Beirut, these guys are the Grandfathers of the Beirut-sound; famous for the backing group to Little Miss Sunshine.
El Perro Del Mar - Quite a delicate artist, with amazingly challenging and rewarding music.
Evangelista - A woman like Perro Del Mar, but on a completely different plane, this is a dark exploration of Carla Bozulich's soul.  Only paralleled by Scott Walker's the Drift or Swans.
The Futureheads - The retro-throw back Brit-Rock sound is a bit done with, but the Futureheads pull out of their hat a fun and cleverly written collection of Garage Rock hits.

Part 3
http://www.sendspace.com/file/pqsb9s
Genghis Tron - Dan Deacon meets Slayer.
Get Well Soon - Baritone driven soul searchers.
Girl Talk - Obviousily not as ground breaking as NightRipper but a bit more focused and smoother.
Gnarls Barkley - WoW! Pop radio wants to make these guys a 1 Hit Wonder! But this is a seriously strong album, pity that it didn't recieve the attention it deserved.
Goliath Bird Eater - DRONE SLUDGE -WONDERFUL!
The Goslings - Imagine Wolf Eyes mixed with bits of Sonic Youth, Y Group and Modern Lovers....wtf?
Grip Grand - Grip Grand released a solid heady throwback hip hop album, not as clinically produced as The Cool Kids but far more substance; the album Common should have released.
Grouper - I really don't know why I like this, this is trully an album that you just put in on foggy nights and listen to on repeat enough times that it finally clicks.  Mezmerizing.

Part 4
http://www.sendspace.com/file/e6vgja
Intronaut - Post-Metal with many directions abound. Reminiscent to Cave In.
Jonny Greenwood - There Will Be Blood Soundtrack - Have you seen the movie yet?  SEE IT!
Kap10Kurt - Goofy ass Dance that ASS Synth Drums Bass player Dance.
Larkin Grimm - This came out of nowhere, makes sense this was released by Young God Records, really good female fronted sort of folk rock.
The Last Shadow Puppets - This is one of the dudes from Arctic Monkeys making his very own Epic 60s Scott Walker album! Yeah it is that cool.
Metaform - Metaform is in great form, picking up exactly where RJD2 left off, this is a wonderful release constantly on replay.
Metronomy - MGMT has made this sound popular but believe me there are plenty of other great MGMT 'like' groups out there, Metronomy for instance are MGMT with a dash of Mogwai and M83.
Morgan Geist - 80s Detriot Techno done to it's fullest!
Mount Eerie - Once more, a treasure trove of Lo-Fi moody rock songs.

Part 5
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ev53iy
Neil Landstrumm - More Dubstep to prove that you need to listen to, well....more Dubstep.
The New Year - A wonderful indie rock record (in the purest sense of the term indie rock) with rollicking piano and drab yet effective vocal hooks.
Plus Move - Like Danger - These guys are the future of the Noisy Grimmy Dance monster that Justice woke up.
Racebannon - All types of metal in one band, Bloomington's Finest.
Sebastien Tellier - Disco in the hands of a genius can be a godsend on the drab unfriendly days of our lives.
The Shakey Hands - Sorry but I found this to be far more interesting than Dr. Dog.
Ed Rec Vol. 3 - The label that Justice made famous has always housed a immense collection of racious and amazing acts - this compiliation showed off their roster of talent.

Part 6
http://www.sendspace.com/file/lt8htp
Starkey - Starkey is one of those groups that trully has no genre, even in today's music world of sub-genres and ridiculous names like Wonk-Hop (WTF?) Starkey are somewhere between Drum&Bass, Jungle, Dubstep, Trip Hop and Hip Hop.
Uzi & Ari - This is one of those groups that can just creep up on you because they are that 'typical' but also so perfect, well to call Uzi & Ari "typical" is really poor taste in words.
Venetian Snares - Once again Venetian Snares want to make your ears bleed, but it is still so god-damn relevant and ahead of their time (now going on 10+ years!) glitch spastic Electro Bursts.
The Very Best - All of those great, hip dance tracks from the past 2 years (and don't forget the Micheal Jackson track) with some refreshingly new harmonies and melodies placed right on top of them by 2 crazy African Dance Dudes!  Good times.
The Walkmen - The more I listen to this the more I am amazed, it might just make the top of 2008.
Walter Meego - Yet another 80s throwback synth driven dance rock group, but seriosly ohh sooo GOOD.
Wye Oak - The Village Green was graced with Wye Oak's presence over the summer and this duo team have created a brilliant simple flowing album of heartfelt tracks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PART 1 of the 2008 Honorable MENTIONS
Part 1
Adem - Delicately subtle production, heart-wrenchingly fragile. This year brought Adem's album of re-Interpretations of a pallet of artists as diverse as: Pj Harvey, Smashing Pumpkins and Aphex twin.
Amen Ra - Dense, Sludgy and very doomy.  Loving it.
Auburn Lull - Layers of bright ambience create gorgeous glistening walls of sound.
Beneva Vs. Clark Nova - part glitchy, part pop-sensible, part ambience.
Bloc Party - They take their fast paced brit-rock sound into the Dancey techno laced Klaxons direction.
Bodies of Water - Big group vocals and larger group rock out dynamics.
Chairlift - A little lo-fi dance rock balanced with some muffled shoegaze pop.
Clark - A dance is hidden somewhere deep in this cacophonous mix of clashing electronic noises.
Clinic - Each step for this group is one small step farther from their earlier sound years ago.  Though it is important to keep in mind they have never lost their catchy hooks.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/s2qwlk
Part 2
Common - Chicago's veteran Hip Hop conscious Mcee came out with a fun, radically modern release compared to previous albums.
The Cool Kids - The year's best throw-back act, genuinely tapping into the old-school Hip Hop sound.
Cut Copy - Fuzzy layered dance pop has been one of the critic's favorite albums, it was a tad overwrought for my taste but still had a handful of amazing songs.
Daedelus - Once more Daedelus changes his style, and this time stepping deeper into electro dance persona; far from his spacious trip hop sounds of earlier albums.
Dark Dark Dark - On the edges oddly optimistic, though steeped in a dark and moody folk atmosphere.
David Vandervelde - Throw-back Country folk album with all the great touches of old country song craft with a modern alt-country production.
The Dears - Canadian rock group with ambitious themes and big well produced ballads.
Dr. Dog - Rock and Roll group with leanings towards My Morning Jacket and other 'down-home bar rock' type bands, with a bit of a southern folk rock sound.
Earth - Earth has evolved their sludgy, drone rock into a odd country, americana sludgy rock sound.
............................
http://www.sendspace.com/file/7a8lct
Part 3
Elbow - Brit Rock at it's finest, Elbow are one of the most interesting, challenging and progressive Brit-rock bands in the past 10 years.
Eliot Lipp - Electronic, almost Detroit techno groove album.
Errors - Imagine Battles math rock with synth-dance elements.
The Faint - Very D.I.Y. album from synth-Dance Rock veterans, continuing to do what they know best.
Fennesz -  Thick wall of sound drone and atmospheric ambiance.
First Floor Power - Super sweet male and female duet disco pop. Very Catchy!
Food For Animals - This is the most gnarly, noisy Hip Hop I have ever heard. There is no better way to describe it.
Foot Village - Drums and screaming. That's it! If you dig Health, No Age, Mika Miko you'll love this.
Fujiya Miyagi -  Vocal Calisthenics and stiff funky grooves - yeah it shouldn't work at all, but it does!
The Gaslight Anthem - Throwback to early Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band rock and roll with a younger more adrenalized energy.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/37ky0v
Part 4
Glasvegas - Pop rock songs with smooth wall of sound shoegaze production.
Grails - Ambient Post-Rock group with more dark side than bright explosions in the sky side.
Grip Grand - Conscious Hip Hop with biting rhymes and soulful breaks.
Health - Their remix album released in 2008 was a surprisingly enjoyable collection of reinterpretations of a band that would otherwise be too spastic and pummeling for a dance vibe.
Heaven and -  Avant-garde post rock release taking elements of early industrial noise rock ala Nurse with a Wound, Throbbing Gristle and especially Einstürzende Neubauten.
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanagan - Imagine taking the Nick Cave and Kyle Minogue duet song Where the Wild Roses Grow and making an entire album of exquisite, beautiful ballads.
Ital Tek - Dubstep continues to be pushed into new directions, Ital Tek is one of the most interesting of the new breed of dark bass heavy electro-dub groups.
Jamie Lidell - Nearly stripping away all his electronic outbursts and antics, Jamie Lidell's 2008 release Jim is a thoroughly enjoyable Neo-Soul outing.
The Kills - This year has seen a surplus of dance groups that rock, The Kills released a album of rock songs that will get you dancing.
King Khan & His Shrines - Garage rock with horns strings and a ton of Soul.
............................
http://www.sendspace.com/file/1isx48
Part 5
Late of the Pier - Epic dance rock, taking the Hot Chip sound to a more aggressive technical side. This will receive a domestic release in the U.S. in 2009.
Lights - With the same subtle song craft and technical playing as Fleetwood Mac, Lights conjure up more than a simple pop sound.
Lymbyc Systym - The remix album Love Your Abuser happened to be one of the more interesting Post-Rock releases of the year, with a eclectic take on remixing.
Madlib - Madlib has always pushed the boundaries of Hip Hop production. His most recent album borrowed pieces of all sorts of world sounds.
The Mae Shi - Spastic indie pop, with group vocals, synths heavy guitars and upbeat energetic drumming, it's all over the place.
Man Man - Not much has changed for these guys, I always feel obligated to mention Tom Waits in every review of Man Man, they have that same rollicking growl.
Matthew Robert Cooper - Matthew has temporarily dropped his Eluvium title to release this very intimate and microscopic ambient drone album of delicate beauty.
Max Richter - Trained under neo-classical minimalists, Max Richter has released yet another collection of beautiful mini vignettes this time centered around the recording of multiple cell phone ringers.
............................
http://www.sendspace.com/file/crpbtc
Part 6
Milosh - Elements of delicate blips and beeps. Glitches of electronic hiccups stutter and pulsate this album into a bizarre electro-soul groove with equally delicate but soulful singing from Milosh.
Mogwai - One of the most original directions Mogwai has drifted into, this album sounds like a heavier M83 with guitars ringing out like synthchords instead of the oncoming apocalypse.
Mr. Oizo - Far more bizarre and sketchy than label mates Justice, Mr. Oizo brings the noisy dance floor to it's knees on a few occasions throughout Lambs Anger.
Pacific - A more sincere yet equally engaging take on synth pop than MGMT.
Parenthetical Girls - I never anticipated this direction of sound from these avant-pop cohorts, P.G. have traded in the bitter Xiu Xiu'esque tactics for a highly composed piece of chamber pop.
Poni Hoax - This year brought about their sophomore release, an album of epic pop rock singles, a tad bit more than they could handle, but still a good listen.
The Presets - Like Does This Offend You, Yeah; The Presets take dance music to a aggressive new level of energy.
Primal Scream- Primal Scream's most emotionally naked album, they usually build a facade of distracting beats and grooves, yet this album brings a more straight forward rock face to their sound.
Pyramids - Metal with shoegaze and post-rock. Noisy.
Ra Ra Riot -  All the common elements of today's indie rock; Strings, upbeat group male/female vocals and hooks abound. Ra Ra Riot has something different though.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/5bdkep
Part 7
Rafter - Super Pop Rock for the ADD listening audience.
Raphael Saadiq - With Jamie Lidell, Raphael Saadiq has also released a solid neo-soul record full of sincere catchy soul tracks that sound like old Stax and Motown records.
Raz Ohara and the Odd Orchestra - Like Milosh, but with more traditional song-craft and instrumentation.  Raz is also reminiscent to One A.M. Radio in the respect that he isn't afraid to take chances.
The Remote Viewer - Yet another other-worldly ambient album this year, though part of a common genre in 2008, The Remote Viewer was able to bring an interesting sound to pop music.
Retribution Gospel Choir - Low's lead singer goes out into thick guitar rock territory with this release, some tracks are originals others re-interpretations of Low.
Rio En Medio - A spacious moody album of darkened forests and creepy songcraft.
The Ruby Suns - Indie rock lo-fi outing, catchy songs - Once again we see the over reaching influence of Shoegaze.
SebastiAn - Finding domestic releases of SebastiAn is nearly impossible, but luckily for us a Compiliation of his remixes was released bringing new light to Revl9n, Daft Punk, Klaxons and Bloc Party tracks.  If you are a Ed Banger Records fan than this is an Absolute MUST HAVE.
Sigur Ros - They completely reinvented their sound, making one of the most interesting and impressive releases of their recent career - chock-full of great songs, though they failed to make a solid amazing album this year.
Silver Jews - Arguably David Berman's must focused rock album, a handful of great indie Country Rock tales of America.
Talkdemonic - Strings and tasteful uses of electronics not unlike their previous albums - though this time they have added heavily distorted guitars, it only faults their sound a few times.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/myijny
Part 8
The Tallest Man on Earth - Ruff vocals and a delicate yet powerful folk sound, Tallest Man on Earth has garnered quite a respective name for themselves this year by releasing an unexpected hit.
Ten Kens - Picking up where Tim Kasher left off with Cursive, Ten Kens has released an album that goes where must rock bands (Indie, Post-Emo) of their age are afraid to go.  Big production with lean amounts of psychdelic guitars and larger rocking chops.
Thee Silver Mt. Zion - T.S.M.Z. only continue down on their exploration of the gospel side of Constellation Post-Rock.  The songs bite with a cynical political attack.
Thomas Function - Maybe the best Bedroom Garage Rock album of the year! The songs have the same catchy, cooler than thou vibe as The Modern Lovers or Stranglers from 30 years ago.
Tindersticks -  The halls of this dark, chamber pop group from Nottingham go deep into their souls. For over 15 years they have toured the dark recesses of their emotions releasing some of Britain's must sincere and beautiful music.  String and horns arrangements create a call and response to Stuart Staples baritone lead vocals.
TV on the Radio - Bar-none the most highly rated album of the year that we at the *V*G*R* never fully understood or (maybe) appreciated.  Nonetheless this is still a good album and worth mentioning but in our opinions is nowhere near the best album of the year. This is TV on the Radio still making some of Indie Rock's must interesting music, and changing their sound quite a bit. This time you see TV on the Radio picking up more synth, drum machines and Ricky Martin!?! (-yeah, I swear some of the songs sound like Ricky F'ing Martin) I Don't get it?
Tyler Ramsey - Think Damien Jurado but more artsy.
Why? - A favorite among Hippie Hip Hop'pers and Indie Rock kids that don't really like Hip Hop. Why? sticks to his usual weird, odd self, with songs about tons of ridiculous stuff.
Xiu Xiu - Xiu Xiu's 6th album, they have yet to lose their edge, but naked emotion and creepiness aside this album only occasionally picks up the hook filled, 'listenable' side of their sound a few times.  All Xiu Xiu records are necasary, but Women As Lovers is a misstep much like their 4th album- La Forêt.............................
