Degrees Of A Season
I awoke this morning with a fever that I thought would have broken during the night. It's as if my body took all it could throughout the year and finally had enough. Thankfully, there were no footsteps, voices, or noise of any kind to irritate my head. I laid in bed staring at the ceiling, cursing my illness but feeling obligated to rise. As the sunlight seeped through the crevasses between the blinds, my squinting eyes focused on a piece of chocolate posing like a statue on my bed stand. The milk chocolate, wrapped in foil, quickly reminded me that, despite my fever, it was Christmas morn.
This season has a funny way of mixing emotions until you become completely confused on how you are actually feeling. Gifts seem to mend depression, which in turn, always has made me feel somewhat greedy. The feeling of greed subsides as the smiles on my family's faces bring a sense of joy. Of course, the joy is promptly forgotten when siblings decide to argue about the most insignificant things. This usually brings on feelings of frustration and regret. Frustration stemmed from the time you have wasted arguing, and the regret you have for spending so much on their gift. Yet, as the day marches on, all of these feelings seem to merge into somewhat of a dark sense of happiness.
Still laying in bed, I stretched my limbs and prepared myself to stand. As I sat up, feet now touching the floor, I realized that everyone was still asleep. I snuck back to the kitchen, fixed a cup of coffee, and grabbed my guitar. It felt like the first time this year that I had played my guitar just to play. I wasn't getting ready for a show or gearing up for the studio. I was simply playing music. Other peoples' music.
An hour or so must have passed before the family began waking up. I was smiling from my gut with my harmonica around my neck and guitar hanging from my shoulders. I felt like a child. Suddenly, the fever that had loomed over me, was gone. All forms of negativity had slowly disappeared. Through all the work that had been done, the tours that had been traveled, and the recordings that had been released, I felt somewhat relieved that 2006 was close to an end. Not for reasons of animosity, but due to the fact that 2007 would soon begin. I was thankful for a beginning. I was thankful for an ending. Most of all, I was thankful for the ones that I love.
We are truly blessed.
peace. JP
