 Most would think that this harsh financial climate would be infertile soil to plant the seed of new business, most would also think that financial stability is the basis of happiness.....in fact most of us are unwilling to take chances in general...especially when emptying your bank account and risking eviction are involved!!!  But sometimes opportunity falls in your lap, and you are faced with  the decision to either walk away and always wonder ' WHAT IF ?', or simply take a chance and rise to the occasion..I for one am always a big fan of the latter...my track record and so called career are a testament to that notion..that being said, i always applaud and support when a friend of mine goes down that brave path.

A few months ago  a friend of mine told me he was going to start and eco friendly screen printing business, right in the middle of a black hole where those of us who had jobs could barely pay  bills, and those of us who had bills could barley find jobs...i had run away on tour for a wopping $20 per show because at least hustling on the road beat filling out applications in stuffy south florida restaurants where my attire couldn't even make the cut for an interview.  Brett called and said that he had been handed down some vintage printing equipment from his father (whom he worked for many many years), rented a warehouse, and was ordering an entire line or water based inks and soy based cleaning products...hmmm i thought ' FUCKING AWESOME!!!! ' Not only was he going into business for himself with a true DIY ethic, but he was going into green business. A word thrown around lightly today in many corporate ad campaigns where it's more of an image then an attempt at helping the environment, but at least their hearts are in the right place. How many 'GO GREEN' shirts do you see today printed with plastisols and harsh chemicals?
It's a gross contradiction...

So upon my return from tour i took to spending some of my free time attempting to help brett get the business off the ground, partly because i needed some future employment , and also because his dedication and drive were and continue to be inspiring.  I learned how to burn screens and adjust the temperature for different garments on the drying machines, the proper pressure and angle to apply a squeegee to a screen..basically 'the science'. We tried to do a 'holiday/welcome to the neighborhood' special where we went on foot giving out flyers and talking to the other businesses and warehouses in his area, but the words 'eco friendly' don't fare too well in a conversations with  mechanics, welders, and lumber men...so we went for a  different approach and started talking to tattoo shops, cafe's, art galleries and record stores which turned out to be a lot less uncomfortable and a little more enjoyable. The fact that water based inks dry differently allow for printing on paper which opens up new avenues like record sleeves and art prints! In fact we're already planning on hand printing the covers for the boyfriend's Inc. limited edition coloring book!!

But please... don't  just take my word for it....Brett has done the research and is constantly looking for new ways to expand and help other companies go the green route.
