THE MORE VOLTAGE TOUR
featuring The Glitch Mob, Nosaj Thing and Daddy KevJuly 23rd-31st, 2009
San Diego / Los Angeles / San Francisco / Portland / Seattle / Whistler / Vancouver
It's Summer 2009 and there's no better place to be than the West Coast.
A landmark tour has been packaged for late July that will unleash three
of the biggest names in the exploding L.A. electronic music scene.
Presented by indie powerhouse label Alpha Pup Records, the
More Voltage
Tour features an all-star line-up with The Glitch Mob, Nosaj Thing and
Daddy Kev. Starting July 23rd they will traverse the West Coast,
rocking San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle,
Whistler and Vancouver. Bound together by a common vision for
futuristic composition and ridiculous bass, this triumvirate will
confirm that the next generation of electronic music pioneers has
arrived.
THE GLITCH MOB
Taking influences from hip-hop, rock and experimental electronic genres,
The Glitch Mob have crafted a new form of futuristic dance music. Their
wicked combination of ferocious bass, neck-snapping drums and complex
melodies has earned them a worldwide grassroots fanbase. What started
as a loose affiliation soon stuck as edIT, Ooah and Boreta found
themselves frequently playing the same shows, and eventually
collaborating during sets. Their live performance is a complete
reimagination of the laptop DJ paradigm as they flow like a seasoned
jazz trio -- each taking the lead at intuitive moments -- layering
chords, vocal snippets and drum patterns into an overwhelming digital
wall of sound.
What has resulted is the very distinct Glitch Mob aesthetic, blending
the head-nod factor of hip-hop tempos with outrageous basslines and
microscopic production trimmings. Alongside other L.A. luminaries like
Flying Lotus and Daedelus, The Glitch Mob have been torch bearers for
the exploding West Coast instrumental hip-hop slash electronic
movement. Individual members of The Glitch Mob have released music via
their own Glitch Mob Unlimited imprint, a subsidiary of Alpha Pup
Records. The year 2009 has seen the release of Glitch Mob remixes for
TV On The Radio and STS9, cementing their reputation for jaw-dropping,
cutting-edge production. The Glitch Mob plan to release their debut
full length album in early 2010.
NOSAJ THING
After cutting his teeth by making music on various archaic computers
and programs in his early years, Nosaj Thing is now, without a doubt,
among L.A.'s finest musical modulators. His electronic soundscapes and
wild beat tectonics play like vignettes that affect the listener's mind
as deeply as he hits their soul. Nosaj Thing creates nothing less than
the sound mastery of beat driven, experimental electronics from a
gifted noise constructor.
His debut album
Drift was released by Alpha Pup in June 2009 to
unanimous global acclaim. Pitchfork awarded an excellent 7.9 rating,
calling the album "gorgeously haunted... sonic Easter Eggs for a
thousand listens." The album peaked at #5 on the iTunes Electronic
chart, and went all the way to #1 on Bleep and Boomkat. The success of
Drift
led to Nosaj Thing being featured in magazines such as Spin, Fader,
XLR8R, The New Yorker, Nylon and URB. He has received regular airplay
on BBC Radio 1 and Los Angeles' KCRW, while his engaging live set has
made him a staple of the worldwide underground touring circuit.
DADDY KEV
Dubbed "L.A. underground godfather" by XLR8R, legendary producer and
label boss Daddy Kev has been a bedrock of Los Angeles independent
music since the early 90s. Having a career that has touched nearly
every aspect of the music business, Kev first gained attention on the
world stage for his music production during the underground hip-hop
renaissance of the late 90s, producing and recording hit records for
likes of Freestyle Fellowship, Sage Francis, Busdriver, Living Legends,
Abstract Rude, AWOL One, Supernatural and Anticon. Pitchfork refers to
Daddy Kev as "one of the Los Angeles underground's most visionary
producers... His style exemplifies the steady bleeding of hip-hop
culture into the
more highbrow aspects of art."
Kev founded seminal L.A. underground rap label Celestial Recordings in
1998. He ran Celestial and it’s drum-and-bass imprint Vortex from
inception until closing in early 2002. Daddy Kev’s romance with
business manager Danyell Jariel led to the formation of Alpha Pup
Records in 2004, a record label and distribution company that is now
home to the likes of Westbound Records (Funkadelic, Ohio Players), Gold
Standard Labs (The Mars Volta, !!!, The Locust), Brainfeeder (Flying
Lotus’ imprint) and Glitch Mob Unlimited. Kev’s audio engineering
skills continue to be highly sought, and can be heard on recent
releases from Flying Lotus (
Los Angeles and
Reset EP), Nosaj Thing (
Drift), Exile (
Radio) and Daedelus (
Love to Make Music to and
Throw A Fit EP). In October 2006, Daddy Kev began his weekly residency at Low End Theory, the highly regarded L.A. club night.
