Seriously someone should open a real "dive" a place for freaks and lost souls. No pretenses, no camdenites who are eagerly waiting for the next Pete Doherty move. A place for people to hang out, separate themselves from the bar and club scene we are associated with today I watched footage of Lenny Bruce on youtube in some real cellar looking bar just around the period where he was being banished from most clubs for saying the words Shit or Fuck. It was his second last gig and he was talking about his court cases he was going through and how a cop was quoting his own act to the judge and he was pleading with the judge to let him say the quotes and maybe they would get it. Instead of this the stiff cop was reading it in a flat uncaring emotionless voice 'Well judge he said the words"Fuck darling I don't give a Shit if the man is from the Vatican.. he can't piss on my lawn'....your honour." Lenny Bruce was crucified and paved the way for Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Bill Hicks......on and on. He was the first to use swear words as a part of a comedic performance and they harassed him til no club owner would book him. He eventually died of a drugs overdose. Ruined. These same authorities are the same people who want us to watch American Idol and shut the fuck up while they go on and do their hardest to ruin our children's future.
But lets open an illegal bar hmm? A place where people bring their own booze and watch performers of all kinds just get up there and do their thing. Smelly people can be. Women with a thouseand yard stare. I don't give a shit as long as they don't think Lady Ga Ga is the shit. Create our own scene. Away from the bullshitters. That's how it needs to be done. A place where it only closes one hour a day for it to be cleaned man. Fuck All Bar One. Fuck O Neils. Fuck Red Bar. These places make me want to not leave the house and sit with three bottles of red (Blossom Hill please), my guitar and my computer and dream what it would be like to REALLY have somewhere where people appreciate you when you are onstage and you are trying to do something DIFFERENT. Pleassee please pleasse we don't need the 80s back ya fuckers. Lets use a sample of it here and there to make things interesting but call me crazy but if some dick and his asshole is dressed as member of New Kids On The Block then I think he is going to look like a dick in the next 2 years. Harsh?
But maybe I should just pull my head out of my ass and go lookin. But man I live in the capital city of the country. I have been here for 6 years man...shit maybe nearly 7. And I still haven't been somewhere that draws me in and makes me feel like "Shit this is home!!". Blues bar comes close. Lets steal a cellar and build a scene. Hell even you smokers may be able to light up a few!!
Oh and I put up a little recording done on a basic mic in me Kitchen. Will be putting it onto my next album in studio form. Check it out. It's called "Whatever Worry".
Here's Lenny Bruce somewhere in New York in the mid sixties:

Yeah I am still awake. Drank a bottle of wine and have been watching John Martyn footage on myspace and listening to him on "Last FM".His album Grace and Danger hits my heart. A lot of music these days hit your head and demand attention when you don't want to give it. But John Martyns music takes a hold of the heart and you want them to and love it. That's real music. His music had a real soul. That's where I come from as a fan and a musician. A normal happy place. A place where music is meant to make you eternally feel something.. From the heart. NOT the head. Where you let go and take it in and let it give you something. Make you rebel to the uptight feelings and rules which society try to drill into you and make you toe the line. We humans are not designed to follow suck lines. We are designed to be beautiful natural creatures who are meant to evolve into their potential. NOT let what Gordon Brown and Bush/Obama tells us. Lets get real here Obama just got to be president. We don't know what kind of president he will be. It's a beautiful thing that he is a black man sitting at Washington at the first time but lets not be naive. He is a part of a powerful corporate American. All the presidents for many years have. He works for others like all the others have. To think that he works for himself and no one else is a very silly thing to think. You thing this one man, one human being is suddenly going to walk into that job and tell powerful people what to do? The people who own our money? One man??? Think about it. It's unlikely. Nobody should be jumping for joy right now.. Lets see where the planet is in four years...hmm? I don't think that's a harsh thing to say considering the history of bullshit which has occurred recently.
John Martyn was walking beating art. Fuck Pete Doherty!! Who gives a shit about Pete now eh????? n

Well John Martyn has passed away. Its is very sad and we all know he was in bad shape. At Christmas I got real sick and read his book in one day. And having read it I got to know exactly what he put his body through and so it is amazing that he was alive right up to the recent. But lets not talk about that. Lets talk about the music. He was an inspiration to me. I think he wrote at least one of the best singer songwriter albums of the 70s. Buy from 'Bless The Weather" to "One World" and you will hear some of the most amazing musicianship, songwriting and genius one man can muster up. Love ya John. Here is one of may favourite songs of his and if you have not heard this song I guarantee you will love it: I just recorded songs with Adrian aka the "Son Of Blues" today That's when I heard the music about John. Finally put them on our web site. Check it out it's on me top friends. Rest In peace John you will keep people inspired. n

Open mics have grown on me. Even though I have been running one myself!! Ha! MY open mic is not a good one. Fuck it I'll admit it. It's not! I repetitively ask the audience to be quiet EVERY week. People ask me why I don't do my own stuff at the blues bar and alot of the time I feel it's a waste of me creative energy. Why should I perform a new song when some dope has walked up to the front of the stage, turned their chair around so they have their BACK to me and to proceed to talk loudly over everything I do. On a concisstent level people come to the blues bar for the music but then talk very loudly over every fuckin thing that's going on. What really drived me up the wall is when there are weeks when people come right up to sit at the tables near the stage and talk more loudly than the people at the bar. I have seen people at the bar strain their ears to listen into what I am or anyone else is doing OVER the people with the best seats. WHY GET A BEST SEAT WHEN YOU AIN'T EVEN GOING TO LOOK AT THE STAGE. WHY!!??? Now don't get me wrong I am not blaming the audience entirely. It only takes one table to kick it off. Maybe 5 people to roar over the acoustic music, to lead to the rest of the bar to give up and follow that lead. I watch it every week. It spreads like an anti atmosphere Cancer...the fuckers. Every week you can bet on it. Some customers ask me why I don't tell them to be quiet sometimes and I tell them it's because if I did it every time it happened then I would do it every week and THAT'S depressing. But now I have made a decision. I will say something every time from here on in. When I started the afternoon I always spoke up when it was called for. Those people who yap have been to too many nightclubs. If you are louder than the music when you talk then you are too fuckin loud!!!!
I even pull back the level of my playing and tell them on mic that I am doing so as to not interfere with their conversations. I am obviously being sarcastic but last week they thought I was being serious. Holy shit. The horror.
But so I have been getting back into the open mic scene. See I like them because people listen. But not just that it's that I don't have to deal with some promoters bullshit. I have gotten tired of them. Not all of them please don't get me wrong. Some of the ones especially this week look like they have the right idea. IBut in the past I have sent my music to some of them when they are looking for acts but they send me back an e mail saying they want me to bring 15 to 20 people. See that is NOT promoting. That is getting the musos to do it for ya. Ok you send adverts out to web sites etc online and get the occasional mention in Time Out magazine. But we all know who brings you the real business and that's the musos. Once I brought 30 people to a night which otherwise would have been dead and the "promoter" didn't want to give me a penny after charging 5 quid to get in on a Tuesday night. I merely asked him for some doh from the door to pay me musicians beer and travel expenses for playing with me. But after a major hesitation and bullshit he gave me a tenner. Unbelievable. That left a bad taste in my mouth which is still strong as always.
I love the "Spice Of Life" open mic. The guy who runs it Sean welcomes me every time I am there and last monday I performed there must have been over 50 people there and they were ALL listening...I mean holy shit who would have thought hmm?? I get 2 songs and happily get nervous. See they are LISTENING. It gets me heart pumpming. The blues bar I am learning nothing because they don't give a shit about me eventually and that's the truth. After a while it's all a big fuckin gimmick and the music gets eaten alive with the yapping of the clientele. Is this a music club or a simple fuckin bar in a soho area? Where is the ambience? Don't kill it. If you kill it then things get dumber. We all do man.
So I met up with Ben that night at the Spice Of Life. It was so busy with musos he didn't get to play. But we will be there next week. Can't wait. Ben is a great musician too with a fantastic pick up on his guitar. I always appreciate good pick ups on a guitar. Especially I have one now. There is another bar in Stockwell called "The Cavendish Arms" Their open mic looks great and the stage looks beautiful. It's on every Tuesday and so I am going to give it a whirl next Tuesday C U NEXT TUESDAY! Oh and I hope to play on Bens night. Keep me posted!!
Since turning 31 I have gotten into drinking red wine. It's because me and the missus have given up beer. It has done this miraculous thing of taking away my beer belly. Well most of it but I feel so much lighter. I have been drinking too much beer over the last 7 years of my life. It ages a man and bloats him. Makes him look like a darts player if he is not careful.
I love music. Its has made my life a happy one so far. I am still as passionate as ever about it because I know that it can make a big difference to a room spiritually and lead me life to great moments and joy so do us a favour and........DON'T TALK OVER THE SOLO GUY!!!

Well this is something I have not done in a while. Wrote a blooogggg.
Actually I did write one, a very long one and myspace malfunctioned and wiped it when I tried to upload it. I was drunk on wine and it took me a feckin lonnngg time. Made me bitter. But the wine wasn't. I spewed about Peter Sellers after watching a documentary on him and then an interview with him on Parkinson. He refused to do it unless he walked on at the first part of the interview in one of his characters. He didn't like himself because he didn't know who he was therefore created characters he could use to get by. Thus his hilarious and stunning performance on film and Television. It was that natural to him. He was a horrible man to his family too but he had problems in his box and his dope intake did no help. But a genius he was. And that is what he will be remembered for. So after that I watched the top 100 annoying people of 2008. This was a shift in the tv that evening. It to me was pretty much a store shelf in the wankers we have to deal with year in and year out. You used to NEED TALENT to be on our tvs all year round. Thats why we tolerated Sellers eccentricities because he HAD TALENT!! Imagine if Jordan was such a crazy bastard with a bad streak in private?? Who would take that bullshit after it became so public? The talent are pushed into the back of the room while the morons are teaching the class of Media, Music and Art (They all deserve capital letters). Anyone watch Nathan Barley? Great tv show. I think it sums up who is steering the wheel right now in those corners of art and entertainment (Couldn't be bothered with more caps). In the show the are called "The Idiots". This scene sums it up with the general context of the show. It's brilliant and I find it fascinating that the show was made by people who are IN the industry and must strike a nerve on so many levels. My level people on the street and the people who work in there. Bliss. Watch it here:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lhAr_UeroCk
I am enjoying the work of Fleet Foxes. They sound pretty real to me and the harmonies are out there. Atmospheric folk indie music. Lets me know that a lot of people want something thats real. Not Take That sounding liking fuckin Coldplay/u2. Have you noticed? That sound has gotten so mainstream that Take That are using it in their new single. Wow. Read a Coldplay interview in Q magazine and it put me to sleep man. They have NOTHING TO SAY. Chris Martin said they were going to go away for a while 2 years ago and the came back 12 months ago!! Holy shit. WHY WHY WHY?? Give another band a chance man. Stay off the radar. Let other guys step up. Who are less boring. He said he hates being famous while remaining being famous. Self depreciating I am getting married in 5 weeks just thought I would announce that on the www.
I have now moved out of my flat of 2 and a half years and I am glad I have more elbow space. Therefore I have been writing more. Wrote a new one I am happy with and will be performing it at a gig tomorrow night at the 12 Bar club. Hope you can come down and check it out and have a beer with me and Guy and David who are also performing on the night.
Happy New Year and hope you are as good as you deserve to be!! :) n

Is it just me or do most indie musicians look like the they are fashion students with instruments. Does this mean I have to tape my shoe to my head when performing to get noticed? Please leave an opinion. Here's an example:
