Before we recorded "Ways Not to Lose" my brother and I hadn’t played that much together. In fact, since he lives in Georgia and I live New York, we rarely saw much of each other. For some reason, back in 2004, we decided it was time to collaborate. Things developed quickly after that. We made a demo and before we knew it we were recording the first Wood Brothers record for Blue Note. We didn’t feel like a band yet but we had the "brother thing" and a collection of great tunes Oliver had already written.

Sometimes I wonder why we chose to start when we did. It’s as if we knew we would need each other in order to deal with something big. Soon after we formed The Wood Brothers our mother came down with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Since then Oliver and I have seen a lot more of each other. We started playing all over the country and took many trips to visit our mother. We were able to write and develop new songs together. That’s why most of the songs are co-written. Watching our mother deteriorate and eventually die had a big influence on the writing. I feel like the music is more inspirational than sad. Our mother couldn’t have left us more gracefully.

Now that the record is coming out I’m looking forward to playing the new music for people. John Medeski produced again (he produced "Ways Not To Lose" as well) but this time he actually played on some of the tracks. Kenny Wolleson is back on drums, plus Billy Martin (MMW) plays drums on three tunes. We are really fortunate to have Amos Lee, Frazey Ford (The Be Good Tanyas), and Pieta Brown as guest vocalists on four tracks. Darick Campbell (the Campbell Brothers) plays lap steel, Donny McCormick plays a chicken coup and there are even some strings.. Don’t worry though, it’s not as busy as it seems. John did an amazing job making sure the music had what it needed and nothing more.

I don’t know why Oliver and I ended up as musicians but I’m glad we did. I love writing and playing music with my big brother. I don’t like the wedgies, the noogies, or the swirlies but you have to take the good with the bad. Enjoy the music.

See you on the road!

Dearest friends of the Wood Brothers,

We'd like to thank you all so much for such a warm response to the
music. we've met and heard from a lot of really nice
people, and the gigs this summer have been especially
great--the crowd at Bonnaroo was probably the best
we've had--an incredible audience of real music
lovers! but people have been great everywhere we've
been. we really appreciate the support and hope to see
you soon. thanks for keeping in touch!

MYSPACE FOR A GOOD CAUSE!
We were proud to be a part of Rock for Dafur! Bill Clinton's biggest regret of his presidency was that he did not do a thing about the crisis in Rwanda where 1 million people were killed. If our government was doing something about Dafur then myspace would not have asked musicians to donate ticket sales to Oxfam. Unfortunately, our politicians are as lazy and unaware as the rest of us. The media is not helping either. Very little about Dafur appears on the news. So it falls upon musicians and actors to make voters aware so we can light a fire under our politicians asses. This is how our system works. The lazier and more ignorant we are, the less our politicians have to represent us.
We constantly hear news about Iraq and every US soldiers death. These deaths are tragic but what makes Dafur a crisis is the huge numbers of deaths in such a short period of time. They're already in the hundreds of thousands and yet most of us don't know about it. We're not talking about snipers and smart bombs. Here is a quote from a man who made a documentary about this crisis that you can preview on myspace, "Every day we surveyed evidence of killings: men castrated and left to bleed to death, huts set on fire with people locked inside, children with their faces smashed in, men with their ears cut off and eyes plucked out, and the corpses of people who had been executed with gunshots to the head. We spoke with thousands of witnesses -- women who had been gang-raped and families that had lost fathers, people who plainly and soberly gave us their accounts of the slaughter".
If the U.S. is willing to squander money in order to make an expensive preemptive war on Iraq then surely it's no big deal to provide some aid to this terrible crisis. We are, after all, the richest country in the world.
