Remember the Camouflage!
This March while most Barbadian's will be flying kites David Kirton will be flying the Barbadian flag high in Austin Texas at the annual South by South West (SXSW) Music Conference.
During the past two decades, the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference has earned a reputation as the premier showcasing opportunity in America for acts on the cusp of breaking into the mainstream. For artists like David Kirton from independent labels, SXSW has leveled the playing field, building critical word-of-mouth that is as valuable as any major-label marketing budget. The New York Times said "SXSW is still a place where record label scouts see bands and make deals. But it is also, for many more performers, a hub for operating outside the recording business.... It could be finding a European distributor for a self-released album or the offer of a Midwestern college tour instead". This
conference is a reminder of how many professionals it takes to turn an amateur band into a popular MP3. Here, "behind the scenes" is the scene: the place is packed with publicists, a&r, bloggers, reviewers, managers, booking agents, marketing teams and even a few old-fashioned radio D.J.s. Companies such as Quick Silver, Sony Erickson, Rolling Stone Magazine, Blender and Vibe and media giants BBC and NPR Radio set up shop in Austin for the week. The one thing they all have in common is that they are seeking new music. This is a big part of what makes SXSW tick and work for artists like David Kirton. David Kirton will perform in two showcases a "Music Stimulus Party" being held on Friday March 20th being at The Parish on 6th Street and the second holding a prime time venue and slot at the popular Flamingo Cantina on Saturday, March 21st at 9.pm. International interest in SXSW began in 1989 due to many Austin, Texas and American-based bands finding their first success in Europe. Conversely, there was a lot of interest from SXSW registrants in the international bands who came to perform. SXSW now has offices in Ireland, Germany, Australia and Japan who help bring SXSW registrants to Austin. The music event has grown from 700 people in 1987 to nearly 10,000 people. At SXSW Kirton will be accompanied by his management, PR, Booking and radio team and his music director Andre Jonson.

David Kirton retained the honor of being called 'Reggae Artist of the Year' at the Barbados Music Awards 2009. The evenings Divas including Grammy and Golden Globe winner Regina Bell and Soca Queen Alison Hinds held the spot light, but, when the Reggae category was announced out came the Green Camouflage. Kirton was awarded the BMA by his peers based on the success of his currant album Time for Change, released by Barbadian Record label Bird's Eye Music and distributed by Universal Music in Canada and Right Recordings in the UK. Kirton set a brisk pace with this album. He is quick to say that this album was all about evolving his sound, position and scope, working with noted producers Chris Allman, Van Gibbs and De Red Boyz to capture and realize the final 11 track selected. National College Campus Radio Review Canada stated 'Kirton has written songs with intelligent and grabbing lyrics that listeners can relate to on many levels. He then wraps them in some serious booty-shakin' rhythms, and a shimmy of urban flavor that would be at home in any dance club.' The UK's Sunday Mercury wrote 'the new album from Barbadian balladeer Kirton has the crossover appeal to break him big in the mainstream pop charts.' The Mercury went on to compare Kirton's style to Michael Jackson, Craig David, and UB40. Three music videos, each one unique and individual all help Kirton's cause. They exposed his fans to Kirton's home land, Barbados, in his Time for Change video directed by Sundance and Pulitzer winner Tom Kruger, gathered celebrities and artists together for the highly creative Free to Fly that charted at 6 on the MTV Much Music Top 10 and did not leave out the Caribbean beauties in BMA Best video & Reggae song of year 08 Green Camouflage. The eclectic mix he assembles not only applies to his sound that has been described as a hybrid of pop - rock and reggae but venues with 2008 seeing performance at The Royal Chelsea Flower Show, Virgin Atlantic Music Festival, Fashion has no Borders, Toronto and The Midem World Travel Market, London. Kirton seems to be right on target with his plans for 2009, all ready in pre production of his forth album which is slated for release in fall and tours confirmed for Costa Rica in February and the United States in March it may be that David Kirton's Time For Change is now. .. .. Music meets art and screen in this unique music video expressing David Kirton's song 'Free to Fly' from his 'Time For Change' album released 2008 under Universal Music / Right Recordings UK. The song was inspired by a bird's flight and speaks of personal freedoms, goals and the paths that take us there. The video takes you on a journey with a young dreamer who experiences intertwined visions and emotions while discovering himself. Paintings by noted Venice based painter / sculptor William Attaway develop in real time and actor Gary Dourdan, who portrayed Warrick in hit TV series CSI cameo's as the band. Music was Dourdan's first love and he often jams with Kirton when he is in Los Angeles so it is a natural progression to see him behind the drums and on the stand up bass. 'Free to Fly' was directed by then 19 year old film student Cutter Hoderine and his street eye added to Christopher Gallo's camera experience.

With his peace anthem song 'Green Camouflage' leading the way Barbadian singer songwriter David Kirton is making his mark on the United Kingdom. The UK Sunday Mercury said 'the new album from Barbadian balladeer Kirton has the crossover appeal to break him big in the mainstream pop charts'. Gauging the response to his recent performances and interviews, that break may be just a peace march away . Kirton just completed a successful promotional trip supporting the release of his award winning 'Time for Change' album under Right Recordings distribution in the UK. The promotion included numerous Live acoustic performances at a myriad of venues including The Midem World Travel Market held at The Excel, BBC Wales with presenter Alan Thompson, BBC Sheffeld, Suffolk, Northhampton and Birkshire and on Life FM with top female broadcaster, Lady Loy. British Armed Forces radio, broadcasted in over 20 countries, was not to be left out requesting a live version of Green Camouflage, which was delivered by Kirton and his guitar accompanist / music director Andre Jonson. The Troy Bar in Hoxton, a regular venue for 'Reggae on Top' in London came to life on Kirton's first night in town with a surprise appearance from JC Lodge who joined him on stage for a soulful version of Marley's classic 'No Woman no cry'. They say the best is saved for last and on this trip for David Kirton that was no exception, a well received showcase at 'Lets talk Live Music' at The Bedford earned him a standing ovation from BBC London's Sadie Nine and ASCAP panelists in attendance. Kirton next event will be at the Barbados Music Awards 2009 where he has been nominated by his peers for Reggae Artist and Entertainer of the Year. Kirton's UK tour was sponsored by Virgin Atlantic, Southern Rentals Barbados and The Barbados Tourism Authority.

DAVID KIRTON Time For Change (Right Recordings) Oct 25 2008 by Paul Cole, Sunday Mercury DAVID KIRTON Time For Change (Right Recordings) ALREADY a triple award-winner in the Caribbean, the new album from Barbadian balladeer Kirton has the crossover appeal to break him big in the mainstream pop charts. Songs such as Miss The Water and Sugar are R&B flavoured – imagine Craig David swaying to a sunshine beat – while Money boasts an old school disco beat, and the title track is UB40 style soca-pop. Things get more interesting, however, on peace anthem Green Camouflage, an irresistibly old-fashioned reggae song that could have been a Trojan track. Listen, too, for radio-friendly Michael Jackson-like ballad Free To Fly, a hit in the making. PC
