As it now winds through post production, the report from the scene of the making OPEN MIC, the documentary of the Darwinian struggle to become as comic, is that the NYC Performance Anxiety Open Mic comics footage is the most compelling to the film makers at this point, "making the LA and Chicago look pretty boring!", wow!

Great news for all involved! We'll keep you posted here.

The project is being produced by Jimmy Pineapple the legendery comic who with Sam Kinison, Bill Hicks and others were the original TEXAS OUTLAWS OF COMEDY.

The film is scheduled for release late fall, 2009.

The Texas Outlaw Comics included Ron Shock, Riley Barber, Jimmy Pineapple and Bill Hicks as well as Sam Kinison.

Some of the surviving members are behind a documentary about open mic comedy. It's being shot in LA, Chicago and tonight in New York at Perfomance Anxiety Open Mic.
The film tells the story of the darwinian struggle to become a comic on stage. The open mic stage today is, 5 minutes at a time, the only genuinely free speech soapbox remaining in America. Comics are well aware that Clubs and Corporate gigs heavily censor acts. Corporate entertainment contracts carry riders regarding permissible content and the LA Laugh Factory's $50 fine per use of banned words is proudly collected by the owner. VIACOM, Disney and Clear Channel all exercise content clauses with performers from my experience over the 80's, 90's and recently.
If all this is interesting to you, stop by COMIX Ochi's Lounge 353 W. 14 St. NYC, Sunday night July 19, 7pm. It's one drink minimum. You'll see the open mic and the documentary shooting.
