The birth of Izzy!
Friday morning my wife wakes me up at 6:55am telling me that she believes that she is having contractions about 4 minutes apart. I ask her what she wants to do, should we head to the hospital? She wasn't sure (saying the pains were not too bad) and thought we should wait... I then hear that Savannah is awake, so I go get her so she can say good morning to mommy. When I bring her up to see mommy, she pees her diaper which ends up leaking. So I take her downstairs and put her in the tub to clean her up. After turning off the water, I hear my wife screaming my name saying the baby is coming! I give Savannah to our oldest daughter to put a diaper on her. I run up to my wife and find her standing over the tub (her water had broken). She tells me the baby is coming, and to call 911! I call 911 and tell the lady to send EMS my wife is about to have a baby! I tell the lady that my wife believes the baby is coming quickly and we could not make it to the hospital. She tells me to get towels and sheets, lay them on the bed and get my wife to lie down on the bed. In the meantime, our two daughters are in the room, I ask our oldest to go outside and wait for EMS to come (I wanted to make sure they didn't miss the house). The lady on the phone tells me to get something to be able to suction the baby's mouth and nose. At this point, I remember having the blue suction thing from when Savannah was born in my night stand. I grab it (it was still in the package) at this point my wife tells me the baby is coming! I look down and see the top of the baby's head. I tell her don't push, only to hear my mother-in-law (who was on my wife's speaker cell phone) say for her to push as well as the lady from 911. After my wife pushes the head of Izzy comes out; I see that there is a white film over her head with fluid in it (which freaks me out, all I can think about is getting her to breath). I tell the lady on the phone that her body is not out. She tells me to have my wife push again; when my wife pushes Izzy comes right out. At this point the lady tells me to suction out Izzy's mouth and nose that we needed to get her to cry. After getting some stuff suctioned out I see she is breathing but not crying. I tell the lady on the phone that she is not crying. She tells me to rub her back vigorously and tickle her feet. My wife takes the baby so that she could suction her mouth and nose as well and she began rubbing her back. As my wife is doing this (the baby is breathing she just won't cry) the EMS guys come in. I tell him to hurry up that we have had the baby and we need them to check her out! He said as he is coming up that he didn't even think the water had broken yet! After he gets up there, I hang up with 911 and watch as EMS checks Izzy & mom out. She is fine he says, after checking her breathing. They take my wife and our Izzy to the hospital.
With excellent check-ups for my wife and Izzy, they came home Saturday!
On Sunday the guys from the Engine 8, C shift, VBFD stopped by and gave us a card and bear for Izzy! That was the icing on the cake!
I also plan to get a copy of the 911 tape to keep; I will post that as soon as I get it.
Izzy was born September 14, 2007 at 7:24am, she weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces and 19 ½ inches long.
