Yes, it's here! Oh joy! And our favourite duo have already been chosen as Band of the Week at The Silent Ballet with these fine lines attached: "It's playful, thought-provoking, intimate music. Highly recommended." The track "Turning More Zebra-like" is No. 3 Track of the Week.

Boys, girls and you in-between - you know what to do!

FEN005: Beneva vs. Clark Nova - Dramadadatic
Release: November 2nd, 2009

The Oslo based electronica duo returns to the digital underground to go head to head in a fast paced sonic battle of Dramadadatic - as they follow up to their much celebrated debut album Sombunall of last year. Since last time both have released solo albums and worked on other projects beside music, Frank Benjamin Finger (Beneva) as a music video director for a children's show and Rudi Simmons (Clark Nova) as a director for a few animated tv-series, both on Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).

Dramadadatic is packed with atmospheric samples and a wealth of simple and sweet melodic structures, topped with groovy - often frantic - beats, creating the kind of campfire headfuck we became familiar with on Sombunall, but taking it a step further this time as Dramadadatic is more purely electronic than its predecessor - but with more attitude and confidence.

"A Schlemihl and Human Yo Yo" kickstarts the album, with its looped guitar-chord sample and chopped up, distorted vocal sample and some weird flute in the back. It's soon pierced by slamming beats and crazy noise that grooves for a while until the whole thing breaks down into a muddy AM radio sample that is too short to risk the band being faced with a lawsuit.

From there the album plays out like a magician pulling rabbits out of a hat, from the intense and melodic "Elevator Shoes" to the sweet, childish innocence of "Koala Sideburns" via the clap-a-long pop-groove of "By Analogy, Apocheir". Yes, there is a lot of variety here – take for instance the hiphop inspired "Face Like a Metronome" feat. the droney organ that dropped in during the session and insisted on making some noise. Or the quirky "Once Youth with a Crispy Beard" that combines out of sync combat beats with soft and mellow harmonies. As we get closer to the end of the album things get increasingly intense and noisy until someone pulls the plug and things fade out in a soothing drone.

All in all Dramadadatic is a gutsy display of skills, thrills and wacky ideas, representing a step on and a notch up for Beneva vs. Clark Nova's acceleratingly exciting sonic journey. You'll have these guys dada your drama - or drama your dada even - any day.

Fenêtre Records follows up last year's 3" EP by Beneva vs. Clark Nova by welcoming none other than Dag Rosenqvist to the label roster. This prolific Gothenburg-based Swedish musician - already with five full-length albums to his name since 2005 - is probably well-known as Jasper TX (and also member of prog-rock outfit De La Mancha) to most fans of guitar-based electronica and the "laptop folk"/americana/shoegaze scene. Also, Jasper TX should be synonymous with lovely ambient drones centered around Dag's trademark, analogue guitar sounds. Contrary to the last 3" on Fenêtre featuring two long ambient pieces, Jasper TX here offers a collection of six diversely built-up compositions or closet ghosts - complementing a recurring theme from the preceding 3" release yet also offering something unique and uplifting - reminiscent of his peers upholding the traditions of guitar-based instrumentals like Fennesz, Tape, Tim Hecker, Library Tapes, Seaworthy, Sickoakes, etc.

Rosenqvist - an aficionado for analogue and lo-fi textures is an expert at composing melancholic soundscapes based around simple guitar themes embellished in rich patterns of sounds extracted from synths and organs, other string instruments, field recordings and other toyish effects. The music is very heartfelt and personal, bearing witness of an awareness and empathy in the composer. And though at the offset the music may seem bleak and shrouded in an all-encompassing gloomy darkness, at some point does Rosenqvist's beliefs in hope and a prevailing optimism shine through to leverage a lighter counter-weight to the darkness and dispelling any brooding in the listener through soothing melancholic tones.

5/7 - "A very beautiful album you could dive deeply into."
-Groove

Fenêtre Records presents its fifth release, this time the full-length collaboration album between French multi-artist and electronica aficinado Christophe Bailleau and American folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Neal Williams, also known from his moniker Possible Selves. Bailleau makes a welcome return to the Norwegian label since his remix of Greg Haines' exquisite "Snow Airport" for the label compilation RUFS. On On Soft Mountains We Work Magic, we find two quite different artists, both taking turns to feature prominently, but also presenting us with this magic of theirs that emerges, precisely as promised, when they combine their talents. Williams has a rasp, distinct voice and plays lovely folk-like melodies, both voice and instrumentation managing to sound meticulous and close but slightly out-of-tune and shaky, reminiscent of the vocal talents of his peers in Bill Callahan (aka Smog) and Simon Joyner. Bailleau on the other hand lays out lovely soundscapes as backing melodies, but also whole compositions bereft of Williams' voice.

Together the two weave rich textures and sonic patterns, fragmented melodies that we tune into before hurriedly moving on to find some other focal point, and overall the album has a very colourful feel in its presentation. In addition the compositions capture several atmospheres, some huge and floating expanse, wonderously unknown as Bailleau works his electronic magic, at times alien and unnerving, but also warm and fuzzy, carefully nested in more traditional folk tones with down-to-earth acoustic guitar melodies carried forward by Neal Williams' soothing voice.

"Stunning Norwegian electronica that mixes knife sharp beats with floating instrumental tracks and field recordings. Check this out if you like Boards of Canada, Greg Davis or The Notwist!" - Tiger

"Flott porøs elektronika av typen vi ikke har nok av i Norge"
-BT

We first witnessed Frank Benjamin Finger (Beneva) and Rudi Simmons (Clark Nova) in battle at the Great Easter Party (held rather unseasonally in autumn) at Indigo, Oslo in 2005. The host was the wacky Skrudd collective and the programme included music in almost all conceivable directions. Beneva vs. Clark Nova was the stand out act with their careful musical paintings of inner landscapes. We were struck by this beauty and got in touch shortly after. Since that evening over two years ago, they've been been tinkering with a debut album, and Sombunall is the final result of this process.

The listeners got a sneak peak of the duo's abilities last summer, when Fenêtre Records released their 3" EP Flotsam/Jetsam, which received several good reviews. But this EP showed just a few of the many facets of Beneva vs. Clark Nova. While Flotsam/Jetsam was a trace of the duo's floating and abstract side, Sombunall is where they show their pop face.

Working together with the up-and-coming Norwegian vocalist Therese Aune, who sings on "His Freefloating Affection" and "With Love, Etc." (duet with Rudi), the duo could be compared to the off the wall pop sound of Hanne Hukkelberg and Silje Nes. Mix this with the electro-acoustic world of Four Tet, the complex rhythms of Autechre, the indietronica of Broadcast, plus a good dose of charm, melodic oddity and some introverted enthusiasm, and you'll maybe get a grasp of what Sombunall is all about. Tracks like "88 Kilos of Excrement" and "Thora's Inferno", with their catchy rhythms and melodies, have been small 'hits' on the duo's Myspace site. The uplifting "Nothing, Only Worthwhile" rounds off the album, which we believe is one of the most exciting releases of 2008.

The fantastic cover photo is called "Babies at Paradise Pond", made by the well-known American installation and photo artist Sandy Skoglund.

F3N001: Beneva vs. Clark Nova - Flotsam / Jetsam
Released: June 28th, 2007

A doctor once wrote a book about listening to Prozac; hence, listening to pasients intoxicated on 'happy drugs'. Depressions are weird creatures, and have influenced the arts through all times. The doctor who wrote the book asks himself: "What if Prozac had been available when van Gogh lived?" It is only through Western romanticizing of depression we can gravely ask such a question, and the sufferings will apparently stay an aesthetic ideal for a long time.

The two duelling artists Rudi Simmons and Frank Benjamin Finger have also been through hard periods, fought side by side with Sisyphus in the meaningless existence, and have in common used music as a liberating tool.

On a daily basis they both work with movies; Rudi with animations and Frank Benjamin with video. While Rudi has a background in the rock scene, including concerts at the Roskilde and Glastonbury Festivals, Frank Benjamin was the one introducing him to the electronic sounds and opportunities of the laptop. Together, they have played gigs at smaller venues, mainly home in Oslo, and now it was about time to document and store their activity.

The result is Flotsam / Jetsam, the first release in a series of 3" EP's by Fenêtre Records. The record is only one of many sides of the duo's expression; the abstract and floating, crossed between the acoustic guitar's linking and the laptop's clinking and grating. The temper is profound and melancholic, the tones are positive – just like listening to Prozac.

Fenêtre Records are excited to work with Beneva vs. Clark Nova, and proudly presents the duo for people genuinely interested in music. An album is already in its final stages. Enjoy!

Fenêtre Records has been sitting in the windowsill and silently observing friends and aquaintances wander freely among open landscapes and deep woods. The result is an atmospheric collection of pieces of music, both short and long, called RUFS. It all started with the idea of compiling a little, beautiful set of MP3s for online release, then evolved into a limited edition CD-R, before finally becoming this fully-fledged release on Audio CD.

Featured is an international cast of artists from Canada, England, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden and the USA – some somewhat veterans of the music business, others at their start of their careers. What they've got in common is that they all make spellbinding music.

RUFS
sits within the 'home listening' category, yet remains quite diverse. It starts off with Beneva vs. Clark Nova's playful mix of laptop folk, glitch and ambient, then Melodium and the new Rune Grammofon signings Opsvik & Jennings serve the listeners two short pieces of melodic structure and gentle beats before bursting out in a frenetic (yet surprisingly kind to the ears) drum solo.

Enavomi blends the odd couple, drum machine and flute(!), to a great effect in his haunting composition, while The Jedson Project proves that lap steel guitar can very well be used in other genres than bluegrass and hawaiian music. Ljudbilden & Piloten brings the listeners on a jolly good ride on the prairie, searching for the majestic buffalos. An acoustic trip with lots of textures and impressions.

Nick Grey, bringing vocals to the music, marks a change in the mood with his epic "Black Paper, Mountain". From here the music gets more dark and abstract. Rigil, combining tinkling piano, clicks and an ambient soundscape, creates the last sight of light, before Svarte Greiner and Andreas Meland cover the atmosphere with rhythmic noise.

Still in the dark, Christophe Bailleau gives an impressive, experimental treatment to Greg Haines' beautiful "Snow Airport", and then Muhr shows his skills with slow-paced minutes of cinematic sounds. One hour after the listener pushed the 'play' button, Yasushi Yoshida closes the album with the nostalgic, piano based "Little Hands".

RUFS is a journey through drones and glitches, ambience and electronics, from the cosy to the creepy, presented in exquisite handmade packaging by Kjersti Solbakken. It's a release for short bus trips, long train adventures, grey days at the cabin in the woods, relaxing evenings at home on the sofa - or simply for sitting in the windowsill observing the world.

Tracklist:

01. Beneva vs. Clark Nova - I Could Eat a Curry Everday
02. Melodium - Varicelle
03. Opsvik & Jennings - Self
04. Enavomi - Ponde
05. The Jedson Project - Lela
06. Ljudbilden & Piloten - So Where's the Buffalos?
07. Nick Grey - Black Paper, Mountain
08. Rigil - Questions in Letters
09. Svarte Greiner - Siste stripe av sol spriker mot ein sytung himmel
10. Andreas Meland - Lysrør
11. Greg Haines - Snow Airport (Christophe Bailleau remix)
12. Muhr - We're Falling Like Feathers

Behind the dark and cold walls of the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, our little hero Morten Samdal tries to live up to his fathers expectations after being forced into the cathedral boys choir. He fails. Morten sings horribly out of tune. He comes home with a letter saying that Morten should find himself another hobby. Dad is disappointed. This could very well have been the end of Morten's musical adventure, but no.

Morten never gave up on the exciting universe of music. After a few years on the ski slopes and the football pitch, he found new ways to express himself by joining the punk band 'Cheeky' as a revolutionary 16 year old. Because of his rather doubtful track record as a vocalist, he was wisely placed behind the drums. After 'Cheeky', Morten played in the bands 'Sifnos Plateau Collective' and 'Rest Of My Life' before moving to Bod to study journalism. Here he started a post-rock band called 'Youth Pictures of Florence', a band which got much attention in 2005 with their debut album Unnoticeable in a Tiny Town, Invisible in the City.

Computer music had never held much interest for Morten up to this point, rather the opposite. But suddenly, his eyes were opened up to the intriguing opportunities of the laptop and so Morten's alter ego, Morfar, was born.

The Skywriter EP is a collection of songs Morfar has been tinkering with for the last three years. On this record he has used glockenspiel, melodica and old dusty Casio keyboards in addition to the laptop. Against all odds he stands up and, in the face of all his nightmares from Nidaros Cathedral; he sings. On every track. The result ends up somewhere between the naive and catchy electronica of Kim Hiorthy, the Northern soundscape of Mm and at times the distant voice of Khonnor. His own inspiration, meanwhile, comes from bands like Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor and The Cure. Even though a laptop may be the most important element of his music, Morfar has crafted an organic and natural-sounding EP for the forthcoming days of spring. It contains 7 tracks, 6 of them originals by Morfar, the last one being a remix by Kjempetjukk Bussjfr, courtesy of Healthy Boy Records in Bergen.

Morten also plays in the noise/rock band Build Nest Sleep who recently released their debut album on How is Annie Records, a label he founded himself. The Skywriter EP is a collaboration between How is Annie Records and the brand new Oslo based label Fentre Records, and were very proud to be able bring you this release. It comes packaged in a beautiful nostalgic cover, made by Morten himself together with his girlfriend Kjerst Solbakken.

Sounds interesting? The record only costs $9 (Scandinavia), $11 (Europe) or $13 (Rest of the world). All prices include shipping. Send us a message to info@fenetrerecords.com if you want a copy.
