* William's New Tour Blog

A good day to you my friends.

I'm pleased to say I've finally arrived home and have seen my own backyard for the first time in several months.  I need to apologize for the length of time since my last writing.  I am not by nature a person who thrives on busyness; I believe this is often referred to as "laziness."  In any case, I still have improvements to make in the areas of timeliness and multitasking.  And by "improvements" I mean of course staying exactly the same.

My own personal peccadilloes aside (2 points for alliteration), these have been some of the most rewarding few months I've possibly ever had.  In that short span of time I was fortunate enough to enjoy 2 full tours, spend some time with some of my favorite musicians/people around, and see a myriad of rather wonderful places.  For those interested, here is a bit of a rundown on these such happenings.  Also, I've included a few snapshots taken along the way.

US Tour

I had the good privilege of heading out for a little over a month on a US run, covering some of the Midwest, West, and Southwest.  Opening the shows was my good friend, Jenny Owen Youngs (whose new record is brilliant, by the way).  The trip out west is always a bit harrowing due to the long drives (I think we logged around 12,000 miles when all was said and done), but the tour was a really great experience, and I can't thank all of you who came out and spent the evenings with us enough.  It was sincerely a true pleasure.

Mexico

Only a few short hours following the conclusion of the States tour, I somehow managed to stumble onto my plane in time to head down to Leon, Mexico.  It was my first ever time in the country and I was sincerely taken by the incredible warmth and hospitality of so many people we met along the way.  The city of Leon has a remarkable and well-known market and shopping district and easily some of the best food and fruit I've ever tasted.  We spent some good time just walking about the city, always a welcome respite from highways and hotels.  It really is a beautiful place, we had a wonderful time at the festival, and needless to say, I can't wait to get back soon.  P.S. thanks for the amazing kindness (and the Tequila) my friends.

The Large Apple

After Mexico it was right back on a plane to spend a few days in NYC, with back to back shows the last two nights there.  The shows were an excellent time, but time in New York always goes by terribly fast.  Nonetheless, I do greatly enjoy going out there to see good friends and spend the evenings catching up.  We also fit in some recording during the days.  It sincerely worries me how adept I'm getting at the subway system. If, by adept, I can mean taking the yellow line downtown and uptown in one, continuous, never ending loop.

Mainland Europe, United Kingdom

My nine hour flight to Berlin left the city late in the evening, and I settled in for my long flight with gratitude for being able to make my 3rd trip to Europe in less than a year.  I grew up never leaving my town, my street, or even my house for that matter.  Travel is something I never expected would mean anything more than a grocery store trip.  To say the least, to look out the window and see nothing but ocean below is still just as powerful as it was the first time.

This particular run was mostly festivals, which I look well forward to knowing it permits the ability to see a great deal of friends and performers I often don't get the chance to living in the country back home.  Favorites from the outing were Grizzly Bear, Andrew Bird, Bon Iver, and Denison Witmer.  I got the chance to meet and chat with Justin Vernon, and he is just as kind and humble as his music is brilliant and moving.  I was absolutely floored after his set.  I also got the chance to spend a good amount of time with another musician I look up to immensely, Denison Witmer, who couldn't be a better or more talented person than he already is.  We murdered an Oasis cover together, and hopefully will be doing so again soon.

In the middle of tour we headed to the UK for a string of shows covering several cities in England and Wales.  It was my first time ever crossing the English channel and for whatever reason, I couldn't help but to have a great sense of awe knowing the number of times and the myriad of reasons this small arm of the ocean has been traversed.

Here's my view from inside the boat:

Leaving France for England across the channel
Europe and Britain were a joy and we greatly look forward to returning soon; we shall return with a band in November/December as well.

On the water's edge in Brighton, England

We returned to mainland Europe immediately afterwards for several headline shows and more festivals throughout Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.  Several of the festivals were open air and in beautiful and historic locales.  We played in front of a large hillside Amphitheater in Holland, in the middle of a forest in Odenwald, and even near the King's palace in Brussels.

Belgian beer, after show in my hotel room

As long as several months time can sometimes be, these tours, plane rides, long-distance drives, festivals, and shows always seem to go by so very fast.  This trip was incredible, and I'm using the word very accurately and sincerely.  When I suggest that I'm fantastically lucky to be able to do these things, I mean it and believe it with everything in me.  Thank you so much to all of you - Thank you.

For now I am home and plan on spending time with family and friends, reading, fishing, watching the introduction of newly colored leaves and a young season present itself, and writing new songs.  I recently spent several wonderful days hanging out with and writing with my dear friend Brooke Fraser, which gave me a greatly renewed fervor for writing new things.

To all of you who came out and spent time with us and the music, thank you so very much.  Your support and kindness allow me to do what I do, and I hope you know just how deeply I appreciate it.  I can't wait to see all of you again and share more memories (and more beer) with you.  Be well and see you soon.

With love and gratitude,
from Jacksonville, IL
William

July 28, 2009 - Tuesday
Sadly, due to a wicked bout of something horrid (maybe Swine Flu, who knows!), William is regrettably forced to cancel his Santa Fe show tonight.  We take the cancellation of a show very seriously and would do it only under extreme circumstances.  We all wish William a speedy recovery.  Refunds will be issued at your point of purchase.  If you’re one of the folks who purchased tickets to the show send an email to wfmgmt@brickwallmgmt.com with proof of purchase (online receipt, etc) and we’ll send you a small token by way of apology.  Again, terribly sorry.

First night of tour - Madison, WI. 7/8/09 - 9:30pm

My home is a van and I have become two Williams.  One is a home cooker of pastas.  The other a purveyor of convenient store racks.  One sees a beautiful unchanging patch of yard from hour to hour and week to week.  The other sees trees change at the speed of cruise control.  I am traveled and humbled and often homesick and lost.  But I am happy.  Sometime confused.  Usually lazy but hopeful for a spirit of inquisitiveness.

I find myself missing things a lot of the time.  Most of the time it's family and friends.  Or home.  Or my God-daughter's smile after she has pooped her pants. Other times it's more vague, but no less salient.  I itch but sometimes have nothing to scratch.  A carrot which dangles though never caught.

I shall keep looking.  That is all I can do, any of us for that matter.

DAY 3.  Somewhere on Highway 35 South, on route to Nebraska - 10:20am

I'm taking a rare break from being behind the wheel.  I used to disdain driving, now I'm restless being in a vehicle and not commanding it.  But I'm thankful for the break.  Sleep is already becoming a premium so it's best to grab it when we can.

I do enjoy traveling through the broader and open parts of the country.  Even at home it gets far too easy to fall into distractions that don't permit valuable time to let the mind wander where it would rather like to go.  Creativity is most effectively bred when it doesn't feel like it must be.

The shows have been wonderful so far.  You treat me with a kindness I am humbled by and my gratitude for it is huge.  I won't see home for a couple months, but getting to share music every night feels like family.  More later.  Coffee break beckons.

DAY 12: Interstate 5 South, Pacific North West, Heading to Portland, OR - 12:35pm

Writing from the van again, a clear, cool summer day on the road, en route to an in-store performance in Portland before tonight's show.  It's been a busy tour so far but the shows have been going wonderfully, which always makes the dearth of sleep completely worth it.  Time has begun to move along at a gradually quicker pace, which seems to always happen after about the first week of tour.  Our train has turned into a well-oiled machine.

I had the great pleasure of recording a piece for NPR's "All Things Considered" a couple days ago, which was very meaningful to me as a big fan of the show.  When the introduction began I had a surreal moment when I realized I was actually on the program instead of merely listening to it.  The day I don't realize how extremely fortunate I am to be able to live out these amazing experiences is the day I no longer deserve to be in this position.

Driving this much, while certainly exhausting, is a wonderful chance to revisit albums which I might have forgotten for a time.  I picked up the reissue of Sun Kil Moon's "Ghosts of the Great Highway," one of my favorite albums ever made and have been immersing myself in Kozelek's subtle brilliance.  The funny thing about listening to songs you found at intensive times in your life is they act as a landmark of affectivity; reminding you where you were at first listen, and giving insight into where you are today.  What you've gained, what you've lost, insights you would have preferred but which only come in their own time.  Over the last several months I have noticed a real and salient sea change.  It's a good thing.  Would I trade the pain?  Yes.  Yes.  Yes.  But would I trade the invaluable wisdom such difficulties bring?  No.  Never.  Knowledge only comes with a price, I suppose.

Touring makes me too esoteric.

Thanks for being the most appreciative, kind, and supportive group of people I've ever met.  Cheers to you my friends, talk soon,

William

p.s. Current Road Reading: Just finished "Flatland" by Edwin Abbott, which I highly recommend.  Started Doyle's "Hound of the Baskervilles.
