Blabbermouth, the stage name for singer songwriter Steve Thompson has produced one of the most haunting singles of the year with 'I Return'
The recording is so stripped back of any technical trickery that it sounds as if it recorded on the moon so it is down to his voice and a gentle acoustic lilt to carry the song. And it does so in spades.
The vocal is absolutely stunning, it gripped me from the start and I almost sat in reverential silence throughout. The story of a spirit trying to get back to the world to reach his lover is fantastically played out in wonderful lyrical imagery. It is three of the most intense minutes you will hear, a breathtaking journey. It's B-Side 'Death Of A Songwriter' is another great slice of intense acoustic sadness.
I strongly recommend this single. A true master of lyrical story weaving in the mould of Sufjan Stevens and Devandra Banhardt.

LINE UP: Narrowboat-dwelling traveller Steve Thompson and his 12-string.
WHAT’S THE STORY?: Once you get past the ridiculously unrelated appelation of Blabbermouth and play ‘I Return’, you’ll wish you really never did judge a CD by its name. Still, what’s done is done. Now, we’re here. ‘I Return’ is the most heart-wrenching track of 2009. If it doesn’t touch you, you’ve clearly been in prison too long.
SOUNDS LIKE: an empty funeral service. Surrealistically stunning.
YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: beautiful, contemplative melodies, introspection and loneliness.

Steve Thompson, Blabbermouth as he is more commonly known, has a hell of a voice and writes a hell of a song and the two combine on 'I Return’ to create an absolutely impelling single and the absolute antidote for the usual 'Summer is here, lets dance’ bollocks that is foisted on the listening public at this time of year.

He sings of a lost and wandering soul, of being unattached to the things that he needs and he does it in such a way that he is not pleading for difference but for recognition of his attempts and the production and presentation, even with strings and guitar swelling and ebbing with his words, leave his voice as the only thing that you are going to hear.

This isn’t any kind of a 'typical’ singer or a 'typical’ song – what it is is a completely engrossing and absolutely original sound that forces the listener to feel his pain and his resignation – oh, and this may be the song of a man who might just be the next great thing.

So, I live on a narrowboat... with my lovely wife plus no pets or kids (for the time being!).
People often ask me the ins and outs of our chosen life on the canals of England, so I thought I'd write a few words for those who have expressed an interest...

Simply put, it's bliss... utter bliss, we moved onto our boat mid December and we have loved the cold months on board, it's easy to stay warm if you have coal, wood and the odd firelighter! The solid fuel burning stove (see below) keeps us toasty, sometimes it's like a sauna - no kidding. The trick being you never let it go out! Stoke it up before bedtime and it's still burning in the morning.

It even keeps you warm when this is going on outside...

Yes, that's our boat! in the snow! in Paddington basin!
This is how it looks when it's fairer outside...

The above picture was taken in the first couple of weeks of owning the boat, we cruised slowly from Cheddington to Uxbridge - we were stranded in Uxbridge due to severe engine problems (apparently it could have blown up), but it's all fixed now and we have enjoyed spending time in Camden, Little Venince, Denham and Paddington (Uxbridge wasn't overly enjoyable - I've nothing against Uxbridge - I just don't like it!).

People that have visited us on the boat comment on the lack of space, however, I've felt more claustrophobic in most large suburban "homes". It's all a question of perception .

I shall add to this blog from time to time, there are many stories to be told...

Thanks for reading...
