COMMUNITY SPIRIT EP available NOW!

Transatlantic flows from hip-hop’s global yokels

Community Spirit, the long-awaited debut EP from American emcee Special Opps and a British trio comprised of wordsmith The Wize and producers DJ Thundercat and Jokes, is a unique collaboration spanning from Springfield, MA, to Oxfordshire, England. The 7 must-hear tracks cover topics as diverse as inept politicians and the love of nature, as well as every rapper’s favorite subject: money (but don’t think for a second they don’t have their own twist on it). Available now: CD and digital download.

Remarkably, Opp and Wize wrote the first few tracks before they’d even met. The effect for listeners is that of two sage wordsmiths on distant shores, floating their verses back and forth across the ocean…except in this case, the ocean has been replaced by the Internet, and instead of rolled-up pieces of parchment they used emails and mp3s.

Community League Records CEO August Ruff eventually managed to helm the meeting of these talented emcees, finally bringing together all parts of the puzzle for the most electrifying US-UK collabo since Dipset and S.A.S. Over the past two years, memorable shows at Oxfordshire pubs (including Wize’s opener for Klashnekoff) and Guinness-fueled freestyle sessions on both sides of the Atlantic have solidified the Community League, setting the scene for the Community Spirit EP.

From house parties to ciphers in the pub parking lot, hip-hop’s roots are in the creative connections forged between people who find themselves in the same space, inspired by a shared love. The Internet boom has made it possible for this process to occur across great distances. This EP is a testament to the community spirit that makes hip-hop great—the global is local, from suburb to suburb and street corner to street corner.

Enjoy!

Notes from the New Continent

.. -->paging_filter-->

Buenos Dias!

I am feeling good about life in my new city and beginning to settle in. Perched high on the desert plain between two mountain ranges, San Luis Potosi is a city with a population of one million (well, a million and one now). Some residents might bemoan that it is a quiet place with nothing happening but that is far from my experience!

Between teaching all day, preparing lessons, "dominoes night," learning to drive the Vocho, playing the guitar, joining a football team and writing about it all I have more than enough to fill my days!

My flatmate has been living in SLP for 10 years so he has many friends and knows the workings of day-to-day life intimately. He is also fluent in Espanol…did I tell you that I arrived here not knowing a word of Spanish?!

Having told him that I played the guitar he was eager to set me up with some lessons with his friends at the local music school. At the end of my first week we dropped in, Eric had a rapid discussion in Spanish with his friend Male (pronounced like the country; she is the secretary of the school) before turning to me and saying "you've got your first lesson tomorrow dude."

A lesson? Right away?! I swear, I have not felt one nerve throughout the whole process of moving here, but this? This I was nervous about! I was more than happy to wait until I was "good enough" at the guitar and "good enough" at Spanish before taking the plunge...but then, how long is a G-String?!

My one concern during my assimilation was that I would come to depend on Eric too much, but here he was giving me the push I needed. It made no sense whatsoever to come all this way only to be scared of doing anything so I set to it.

It turned out to be a class for complete beginners, I took to the guitarra acoustica well and I had no trouble with the lingo. I am already signed up for the month.

It is great to be back in a musical environment. At home I would spend most of my energy on making music (www.myspace.com/thewize), though it was not until recently that I began to play music. A great friend put a guitar in my hands and taught me to play, and I have vowed not to squander this gift. When relocating and completely flipping one's polarity it is of the utmost importance to be able to continue with life's passions and interests, otherwise there will always be something missing. Luckily for me Eric was well aware of this and he gave me the little push I needed to get me going. Now, if I don' feel like a siesta, I drop into the school for a chat, I am becoming firm friends with the people there and making further plans to perform and record.

I absolutely love the music here in Mexico, it has a pulse to it that really connects with me and there is something wonderful about Spanish in song.

There are plenty of great musicians wandering the streets here, I often pause on my short walk home to sit with my favourite guitarist and write some songs. I am definitely feeling very creative and extremely happy to be branching out into new things.

Goodbye, until next time...

PEACE

Check, Check it out, it's time for this year's Bum Rush The Boards, read on...

Register Today: http://wblinc.org/bumrushreg.html

Words Beats & Life presents the 3rd annual Hip-Hop Chess Tournament, Bum Rush the Boards happening May 17th 2008 at Lincoln Middle School at 3101 16th Street NW Washington DC 20010.

Bum Rush the Boards, the World's first hip-hop chess tournament, was created to promote the idea of strategic struggle to the hip-hop generation.   The name of the event was inspired by Public Enemy's album, ?Yo! Bum Rush the Show? released in the January 1st 1987.

There was a logical connection between Chess and Hip-Hop considering the fact that hip-hop as a culture is highly competitive.  It is replete with opportunities to battle and compete to win over crowds, crews and sponsors. By connecting hip-hop to chess, we have created a chess tournament that exposes youth to a culture (hip-hop) and a science (chess) that requires them to think ahead, manage talent and size up their adversary.  These skills are useful in hip-hop, chess, business and in life.

This is especially important for a generation of youth who have been made to believe that playing the "pawn" in life is cool.  They have only been taught to move in one direction and many adults see them as dispensable players.  Bum Rush the Boards dares to ask, "What happens when a pawn becomes a king or a queen?"  What happens when a pawn knows that he or she can be more and sees for the first time that they can ultimately be the most powerful player in the game?  Bum Rush the Boards harnesses the power of hip-hop culture and the science of chess to open the minds of a generation to a host of new options the world has available to them.

That’s right, I quit!

I am leaving Europe and heading west to conquer the New World, The Americas, eager to seek my fortune and find new adventures in new lands...following the path of the setting sun that leads to Eldorado...

In fact, I’m already off the island, I’m gone. Right now I’m hurtin’ ’em in the home of the Terrapins and my next stop is Mexico.

Sonny already told you guys "the working man’s a sucker", and I am not meant for temping, I’ve not got the temperament. I’m going to be teaching English in the Mexican desert. Not that it won’t be hard work, far from it, but my job is going to be to think about language all day long, no data, no numbers, no fucking spreadsheets! Haha!

It’s also going to mean no musuic for a while, likely no recording and little performing but Thundercat and Jokez are going to be hard at work back in The Shire and I wouldn’t feel write without a pen and a pad so this is nothing but a change of pace.

I’ll be checking in every now and then and I’ll be blogging over at Gradspot on the regular.

Peace to all the folks on the scene on The Shire, in my absence I wish you all every success, and for everyone who listens to our music - I love you too! I may be away but we are not going to go quiet...Community Spirit is on its way...

Until next time,

PEACE
