Beatles Version of Rock Band to Offer Unprecedented Gameplay

A Beatles-branded interactive music game along the lines of Rock Band and Guitar Hero will give gamers and music lovers a chance to play songs from every stage of the Beatles' storied career, from the sweet simplicity of "Please, Please Me" to more sophisticated fare like the songs on Abbey Road.

Unlike previous editions of Rock Band, this one will exist as a "Beatles game" rather than as a branded version of Rock Band. The basic gameplay will be familiar to those who have played other versions of Rock Band, said Harmonix co-founder Alex Rigopulos, but the Beatles' version represents "a unique opportunity for us to forge into new creative terrain in the music game genre and do things that have never been done."

When Wired.com asked Rigopulos to elaborate and whether the game might include song elements such as an Octopus' Garden, he wouldn't get into specifics. But he did say, "a visual exploration of the Beatles imagery is a big part of the creative direction of the project," and Apple Corps. CEO Jeff Jones said the game will include imagery spanning the band's entire career.

MTV's Beatles music game will benefit from participation by surviving band members Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr and the other two stakeholders in Apple Corps, Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison.

"Every member of the Apple team -- Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono Lennon have been part of the conversation, have seen demonstrations of the game, understand how it's going to roll out, what you're going to see on your screen, how the interactivity and the immersive experience will unfold and they will be involved along every step of the way creatively and musically, with Giles Martin [son of Beatles producer George Martin]," said Apple Corps' Jones. "They'll be involved in the design and the implementation of the design."

The Apple Corps four have seen an early version of the game and seem pleased. McCartney called the project "a fun idea which broadens the appeal of the Beatles and their music," adding, "I like people having the opportunity to get to know the music from the inside out."

Starr observed that the game will ensure that future generations can experience the band's music in a way that make sense to them. "The Beatles continue to evolve with the passing of time and how wonderful that the Beatles' legacy will find its natural progression into the 21st century through the computerized world we live in," he said. "Let the games commence."

Giles Martin, son of Beatles producer George Martin, is adapting the British versions of the band's releases for use within the game. "The thing that we're trying to keep to ... is for people to play the songs as though they're playing the originals," said Martin. "We will be adhering to the original mixes my father and the Beatles did."

MTV/Harmonix' as-yet unnamed Beatles game is slated for a late '09 release. They're likely still deciding on which songs to include. To help them decide, rate the Beatles songs you most want to play in our interactive voting widget.

EA Unleashes a Bloodbath as Dead Space Ships

Dead Space, the award-winning new survival horror game, has shipped to retail in North America for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system.  The PC version will ship on October 20.  Dead Space will be in stores in Europe on October 24 for the Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3 system and the PC.

First introduced last year, Dead Space is an original horror intellectual property that quickly won over critics worldwide with its stunning visuals, spine-tingling gameplay and horrifying creatures. The game has won over 11 awards and has earned a 5 out of 5 from GamePro magazine and 9.25 out of 10 from Game Informer magazine. GamePro even said that Dead Space is "...one of the best survival horror experiences ever created," and Game Informer quotes, "No game has ever been this frightening."

"Dead Space has been an exciting new direction for the team seeing how it is the first survival horror game to come out of EA," says Glen Schofield, Executive Producer on Dead Space. "We created a very deep piece of fiction for the game and really pushed the boundaries on the violence, gore and psychological terror needed to produce a high quality horror entertainment product. We think that people will love the universe that we created and have a lot of fun with strategic dismemberment. You can even dig deeper into the Dead Space universe with our 6-book comic series, the animated feature Dead Space Downfall, and the interactive web series No Known Survivors."

Set five hundred years in the future, Dead Space follows the story of Isaac Clarke, a normal systems engineer, who is sent with a small repair team to restore communications aboard an immense mining ship, the USG Ishimura. Once onboard the vessel, Isaac discovers that the crew has unearthed an ancient and malevolent alien presence far beneath the planet's surface and brought it onboard. It's a living nightmare onboard the Ishimura, which has turned into a floating bloodbath, as the crew has been unspeakably mutilated and infected by an ancient alien scourge. Clarke's repair mission becomes one of survival as he fights not just to save himself, but to return the artifact to the planet at any cost.

Developed at EA Redwood Shores, Dead Space is rated M for Mature with descriptors of Blood and Gore, Intense Violence and Strong Language by the ESRB and 18+ for PEGI. Dead Space will be available for MSRP $59.99 on the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 system and MSRP $49.99 for the PC. The Dead Space Ultra Limited Edition will be available on the Xbox 360 for MSRP $149.95 through the EA StoreTM. For more information about the game, go to the website at http://www.deadspacegame.com

Hands-On: Spore Creature Creator

By Nate Ralph - Wired June 11, 2008

EMERYVILLE, California -- It all started with a pickle.

During Tuesday's Spore press event at Maxis Software's studios, I grabbed the first randomly generated blob I stumbled across and pulled at both ends, not entirely sure what I was going for, but enraptured by the entire process nonetheless.

Maybe it's the wait: It's been roughly four years since rumors of a sort of "Sim everything" got attached to the name Spore.

It seems like ages since then, with no game emerging to give me the chance to while away the hours creating creatures that stumble out of the primordial ooze to conquer tribes, build cities and explore planets. And then, after years of waiting and wondering, I'm dropped in front of the Spore Creature Creator.

Now what?

Other guests around me flexed their artistic muscles, crafting elegant birds, ferocious insects or (usually) convoluted amalgams of limbs and claws and teeth. I, on the other hand, oriented my attempt at a serpent the wrong way, so I flipped the spine over and slapped on a mole-mouth and a hefty waistline, because it looked hilarious.

Spore_2

All the body parts in the Creature Creator come with manipulation handles for adjusting, rotating, stretching and molding them as you see fit. Scrolling the mouse wheel allows you to scale parts, shrinking or enlarging limbs and the like. And every part affects your species ability to compete in the game, with attribute points added or subtracted based on the parts you pick.

The purpose of the Creature Creator, which goes on sale June 17 for $10, is to give the world a taste of the main characters of Spore. That, and to flood the game with user-made content long before it actually hits store shelves.

Spore is scheduled for a Sept. 7 release.

Spore_3

For the final touches, I attached some hooves, grasping claws and a forked stinger to add a bit of menace to my pudgy mole monster. Color was a no-brainer: I picked the orange and green of the most recent issue of Wired. And I went with scales, for no particular reason.

The Creature Creator's procedural scripts determine how, exactly, the textures will wrap around your creature's body, and in my case provided satisfying results. Oh, and his name is Trunk.

Elapsed time, from pickle to ... end result? About five minutes, which includes picking up the wondrously simple interface for the very first time. I cranked out Sparky (seen below, dancing with his kids) just a few minutes later, again with ease.

This is the type of game your parents should've warned you about: I can already see meals skipped and engagements missed as players sit in front of screens churning out simple, bizarre creations to populate Spore's worlds, or maybe even taking the time to craft a beast that's a bit more complex.

Spore_4

Spore, starting with the Creature Creator, blurs the line between social networking and videogames. Strange bedfellows, sure, but an exciting prospect, particularly for a game whose content will spawn primarily from a rabid user-base. (There will be official offerings from Maxis Software, of course.)

Every player (upon registering their game) is given their own page on the Spore community site, with RSS feeds tracking events in the game, their creatures' ratings based on community votes (Trunk: hot or not?) and other in-game news.

Publishing to Sporepedia -- a compendium of all things Spore -- is as simple as clicking "Share" once you're done working on a particular creature. Snap a screenshot and send it as an e-mail postcard, and shoot video, too, with uploads to YouTube just a few clicks away.

Decided that you must have a Trunk of your own? Drag his image off the web page and into your game, and voilà, there he is on your screen. The whole world is sharing the same database, so you'll never know what you'll find, or where it'll be coming from.

There is, of course, the question of explicit content: Someone, somewhere -- more than likely, many folks -- will find no greater joy than ruling over a race of erect phalluses. If anthropomorphic genitalia isn't really your thing, feel free to block whatever you don't want. You can also create tags for your creatures (Trunk is "scaly"), with as many modifiers as you'd like, so if you decide you only want a planet with creatures tagged "fluffy," you can do that, too. You can also decide to only share creatures with your friends and people whose content you trust, so parents don't have to worry about little Johnny or Jane seeing something they shouldn't have. And if a particularly offensive creature does slip through the cracks, you can boot them from your planet, and even ban the creature's creator from ever sending you their wares again.

Spore is a casual game with a ridiculous amount of depth, allowing you to contribute as much or as little as you'd like. The game's relatively low system requirements mean you won't need a brand-new rig to get to work, and interoperability between the Mac and PC versions (which will be released on the same day, by the way) means people can swap creatures, regardless of which operating system they use. The Creature Creator is only the beginning -- with the full game coming in September, we'll be cranking out vehicles of all kinds, and our own buildings, all of which can be shared with the world.

The Creature Creator will be available for $10 on June 17, with a free trial also available.

Head over to the Spore website to meet Trunk and Sparky, and to get a look at all the stuff people have been cranking out thus far.

Spore Updated Hands-On: Creature Creator Meets YouTube

Move over Chris Crocker. The creatures of Spore are the new stars of YouTube.

By Jonathan Miller, GameSpot
We only have one warning for the thousands of custom Spore creatures that will begin showing up on YouTube on June 17: Leave Britney alone. Will Wright's upcoming creation features direct integration with the online video/social networking site, and you will be able to seamlessly upload videos from the game to the Web with the touch of a button. Broadcast yourself, broadcast your creature.

The Creature Creator is just one of many creation tools you'll find in Spore throughout the five main stages: cell, creature, tribe, civilization, and space.

EA decided to showcase the Creature Creator instead of a custom planet or spacecraft builder because players seemed to care most about their personalized monsters. So EA will release the Creature Creator on June 17, allowing players to queue up several creatures in anticipation of Spore's release on September 7. In addition to YouTube, Spore will feature several other community-building features, such as the ability to snap postcards and e-mail them to friends. All creatures will be added to the Sporepedia, a user-generated encyclopedia of all things Spore. What's more, other players' creatures will be automatically downloaded and inserted into your game so you'll see how your beast fares against other community creations.

Evolutionary upgrades to feet and legs will make your creature a better dancer.

We stopped by Maxis this week to create a creature of our own.

The interface is surprisingly intuitive, a combination of dragging and dropping body parts on a spinal column then tweaking and turning them just so until your creation looks like a brainstorming session straight out of Monsters Inc.

We're lovers not fighters, so we set out to create a social beast. We added the whalephant mouth that features a strong singing bonus (great for mating calls) and has small tusks for a minor attack bonus. We added two sets of arms (for hugging) and croak masseuse hands (for late night massages). Our beast was sensual, so we added two more senses: a pair of ears (connected to its knees) and a nose on its chest. Finally, we added a shark fin, a pair of fairy wings for a glide bonus, and four eyes for our viewing pleasure.

By now, our creature had filled up the complexity meter--you're only allocated a set amount of DNA points to purchase these evolutionary upgrades. But it paid off because our creature had strong eyesight, hearing, sense of smell, and a decent speed rating. While its attack was only ranked at a seven, its social rating was a staggering 20, so it should be a hit at any party. There's also an extensive paint feature if you want to spend time with the Photoshop-like tool, but we opted instead to go with a preset green paint job, helping our creature to blend in with the leaves it will surely be eating.

Finally, our creature needed a name. It was sociable, had a great mating call, and was clearly a crooner--a monstrous version of Frank Sinatra. In honor of Ol' Blue Eyes, we called our creature Cumflywithme. Now complete, we decided to see it in action in the test-drive stage of the Creature Creator. Here, you can direct your creature to sing, dance, flex its muscles, or any number of cute activities worth uploading to YouTube. Once saved, Cumflywithme was added to the Sporepedia where it will remain, ready to invade your PCs with love, affection, and song.

With a throaty mating call, Cumflywithme is a hit at parties.

We had our doubts when we learned that the full version of the Creature Creator would cost $10 (a free trial version will be packaged with the upcoming SimCity Box or be available for download at Spore. com.

Why not just offer the creator for free to get more gamers excited about Spore? The good news is that the Creature Creator is packed with content.

Also, both Target and Amazon. com will offer a $5 rebate toward your purchase of Spore. Of course, the Creature Creator will be included in the retail game if you can hold out until September, but those looking to get into Spore sooner will find a feature-rich starting point with the Creature Creator on June 17.
