written by Rude Agent:
"It comes with great sorrow that I spread the news that Mr. Soul of Jamaica, Alton Ellis, passed away on the morning of October 9th. The world was given this treasure in 1944 when he was born in Trenchtown, Kingston, JA. His career spanned nearly five decades and his ever-lasting impression on the future of Jamaican music came in the mid- to late-sixties as the riddim-laden grooves filled with his soulful melodies permeated the upbeat vibrations of the ska era. The summer of '66 saw the explosion of rocksteady in the Kingston scene and Alton ruled the dancehalls during this time as he cuts tunes for Studio One and Treasure Isle among others. His musical longevity persisted for years and years and he enjoyed much-deserved praise from a new generation of listeners as ska and rocksteady made a revival in the late nineties."

Johnny tell me how you started out to be a musician

Well, it's a long story. That's from my early childhood days. I grew up in a home where there was some music there. But, according to the folks it wasn't for me to be a part of.
So I wound up in Alpha Boys School where I learnt to play some music and I took it from there you know?

How did you end up in Alpha School for Boys?

Well, I had to pull a couple of pranks. My folks wasn't the type who would have liked to dump their kids there y'know? So I had to pull a couple of pranks so that they figure I was going haywire.

You did it on purpose?

Yes, because I had to learn the music and ever since I was a kid I told them hey I didn't want to do anyting else. I used to like use the leaf of the pumpkin and make like flutes, papaya stalks that kind of stuff there and combs, sardine cans with elastics, anything that would make a sound.

How did you know the Alpha School was the place to go?

Funny. I seen some kid next door to me. Beating off a mean drum. I say "Bwoy, where did you learn to do that?" and he said "Alpha". I said "Where is that". He says "You can't go there", coz my folks they weren't the worst off. They weren't the type of people, were seventh day adventists, they don't go with the Roman Catholic sentiment of things anyway, y'know? I says "Whoah, I got to get to that place". Like I said, I had to pull a couple of pranks (laughs).

1) What does the name of your band stand for?

Whiskey: Our name is a representation of our strenght against the grain, we decided to call the band "DESADAPTADOS" wich is what best describes us.  We want to manifest our desire of expresion, our ideas, our way of life and to do what we like wich is to play our way. Also, why not, to have fun, to reason, to protest, to be free, to create... We are the way we want to be!

2) Beside being a punk/hardcore band, what other kind of music do the band enjoy?

Punktor:
I really love Rocksteady and Jamaican Ska, also listen to Rockabilly, Jazz and some Industrial.

Whiskey: I enjoy Classical Music, British Mod, Northern Soul, Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, Dub... Boss Sounds!

Lager: Jazz, Skinhead Reggae, Rocksteady, Ska Jazz, Lo-Fi

3) How many of you are there in the band, and did you all know each other before the band formed?

Punktor:
We are 4 now. When the band began we were 3, Lager and I know each other since kindergarden and Whiskey is my brother. We met Samuel a couple of years after we started playing.

4) Do you all have a favourite band, and if so who are they?

Punktor:
Conflict, Kaaos,
Tampere SS, Rudimentary Peni... Lots of bands that I consider "favorite" really… Joya Landis is my favorite Rocksteady singer.

Lager: As a group we all like The Clash a lot, personally I like New York Ska Jazz and Mephiskapheles very much. I also enjoy Stan Getz and John Coltrane.

Whiskey: The Skatalites, Gladiators, Madness, The Clash, The Misfits, Treason, Decibelios, Eskorbuto, RIP...

5) If you had to sum your band up, how would you describe yourselves?

Punktor: We are all active in our own way, enjoy partying as much as learning new things. Music lovers, antifascists, honest and simple guys… When it comes to politics we all have different points of view, but they are coherent with each other in the end.

Lager: Heart, when we play we have to feel it and enjoy it, if not we would rather not play at all.

6) Where would you like to see the band, a year or so down the line?

Punktor: I really see ourselves touring Europe, specially the eastern side.

Lager: I would like to play in London very much, but that's for other reasons

Whiskey: Touring South America and Europe.

7) Do you have any cd's available to buy, and if so how do people get hold of them?

Punktor: Most of our cd´s are sold by other punks or skins that have indie distros, most people trade them in cdr´s as so do we, we also sell and give away at shows; we also have some available trough our label Kaos Koherente (www.kaoskoherente.8m.net)

8) What kind of message would you like to leave anyone, who reads your interview and might be interested in your band?

Whiskey: Rude Boys, Skins and Punks unite!
