I`m not going to be returning to Vancouver, life has proven promising here in Montreal and I am going to stick it out. A very inspiring city. Thus, this little label (with the specifically East Van moniker) is finished.

I did have a wish list of things I would have done had I returned and continued, but if I have proven anything it is that it`s very easy to make something like this happen if you are willing to put in a bit of time and effort. All it takes is desire... and in my case, spraypaint.

Start your own label, take that torch and run with it. It can be pretty fun.

Thanks again to everybody who has been involved and everybody who has cared,

xo B

Hiya,

the production is verrry nearly complete for 1777rex's 5 & 6: Ex-Dead Teen and the 2nd EP from Anemones, "Special Times". I've also nearly completed replacing the defective discs for the Ice Palace release; the new ones are 2-tone purple, sharp no?.

They will all be at Zulu Records on Monday the 2nd of April. Thanks to m'man there'll be a write-up in Zulu's ad on the back page of April's Discorder. To quote that same man: "Nepotism rules, baby."

Feels good to do what one sets out to, promises kept and deadlines met.

I hope you enjoy the records,

Steven.

I finally got the (re-)master from McBean and am knee-deep in producing 1777rex5. Possibly more than any other release, this one's a labour of love.

Ex-Dead Teenager was Stephen McBean (Jerk With A Bomb/Blk.Mtn/Pnk.Mtntps) on guitar and vocals, Joshua Wells (Jerk With A Bomb/Blk.Mtn/Pnk.Mtntps/Blood Meridian/Lightning Dust) on guitar, vocals and keybs, Christoph Hofmeister (Jerk With A Bomb/Daddy's Hands) on bass and Cory Gangnes (S.T.R.E.E.T.S./Pnk.Mtntps) on drums.

They existed from 1996-1999, a time when Vancouver felt kinda lacking in visceral, visionary music. They were the exception. I'll never forget the first time I saw them, how astounded and inspired i felt as i left The Columbia that night. It comes back to me every time I listen to this record.

There'll be copies ready by the last week in March, available here and at Zulu Records.

... maybe.

A nice article appears in this month's Discorder, essentially trumping my little game of anonymity and using the royal "we" in these missives. Fun while it lasted. There's a link in the "Bio" section of this profile.

Charitably edited out of said article was my admission that I fuck these things up sometimes; the Points Gray missing track (again, downloadable here) & more recently a bunch of the ice Palace discs were burned to play only on computers/multi-format cd players. The defective ones have been recalled (most of them were among the band's copies) and I'm in the process of fixing said blunder. The discs I've been using for most of the releases are getting scarce so the replacements will look slightly different- but hey, they'll still be purple.

The photo of a guitar in a doorway used in the article was taken by, though not credited to, Kelly Claude Nairn (aka Sipreano co-producer Decaf) for the Ex-Dead Teenager release. That's the house they all lived at back in the day, one block away from good ol' 1777, and the guitar Josh Wells used in the band. Kelly takes great photos and I'm really grateful for his help.

1777rex5 & 6 are in production simultaneously and will be available at Zulu (potentially Chroma Books as well) by the end of the month, along with the Ice Palace repress. As the article states, that'll be the end of the line for the time being. I'm returning from Montreal in mid-October and intend to wait 'til then to decide.

Pax,

Steven

(aka Ol' Dirty Balogh, aka Ghost Ben Veal, aka "Daddy Rex").

The (truly fine) Sipreano release is now at Zulu Records and will soon also be for sale at Chroma Books (4424 Main St.). As always, you can order a copy from us here or at 1777rex@gmail.com

There are a handful of copies left of the (also truly fine) Ice Palace release. Also, congratulations to Lyndsay and Rich (I.P.) on their wedding a couple of weeks ago. Daddy Rex was on the decks and boy did we have fun.

In other news, Stephen McBean has finally unearthed the master recordings of the unreleased Ex-Dead Teenager LP and has begun the remastering. Between recording the new Black Mountain record and touring with the Pinks he's a busy dude, hence the delay. It should be completed soon and we hope to have copies available by mid-February.

And lastly, as mentioned previously the final (for now) 1777 release is the 2nd EP from Anemones, "Special Times". It contains some material that will appear on their forthcoming St. Ives LP (entitled "Come Down Like A Cloud") and 45, with the title track being entirely exclusive. It will be out in March.

Anemones will begin playing live again in Montreal at the end of the spring and expect to do some touring this summer.

Thanks for looking,
take care of each other,

one-triple-seven.

Wow,

just got the master for the Sipreano LP and it is indeed something special. Choosing a track to post on the player took a lot of consideration- no one track could be representative of the whole given the abundance of ideas on display.

Sipreano (aided by esteemed producers and longtime friends Decaf and The Stunt Man) has composed an eclectic and idiosyncratic series of vignettes in a continuous mix, mainly from vinyl samples with some added instrumentation and vocals, reflecting his great love of his country and his sampler.

... and Fun Boy 3.

Production will start in the next week and copies should be in Zulu before Christmas,

until then enjoy "CN Rail".

... but seriously folks, this is awesome news for Anemones:

"Very exciting news true believers...

the lovely folks at St. Ives (part of the Secretly Canadian family) will be putting out an LP for us. It'll be a vinyl-only edition of 300 in handmade sleeves and the prospective release date is April of next year. They've released LP's previously for Animal Collective, Mirah... needless to say we're overjoyed to join such esteemed company.

VINYL!!!"

The 300 handmade sleeves will be handled by yours truly (with some contribution from the band potentially) and will in a way be 1777rex7- the final release/project/whatever before I pick up stakes to Montreal.

It's been fun, still much to come.

The Ice Palace EP was mastered today and will be in production this week. Expect to find copies at Zulu (perhaps Scratch and a couple others as well this time) by the end of the month. Seven sublime songs to cuddle up around the fire with. There's a song up on the player now- "Blues".

The Sipreano release will come uncharacteristically hot-on-the-heels of Ice Palace and should be available by the 2nd week of December. Awesome.

As always, both releases will be available for mailorder by contacting us here or at 1777rex@gmail.com . The cost will be $7 CDN within Canada, $7 US everywhere else and shipping is included in the price.

There was an error with the Points Gray release, a song was accidentally omitted (there should have been 11). Track 9 on the disc is actually "Streetlight", and track 10 should have been "Tonite You Sleep Alone".

Sorry eh, shit happens...

That song is now available for free download on the player here. Also, as of today all mailorder copies are en route.

In other news, the Ice Palace record has been held up by some technical troubles but should be in production within the month. Also very near completion is Sipreano's release, which by all accounts should be a mindblowing affair.

Yep,
