FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6th: SIZZLEDwith special guests The Beechers: Marshall + Bill Sr. Father + Son DJ Team!

The Beechers: Marshall + Bill Sr. (Chicago, IL + Milwaukee, WI • Plate C Studios)

How many people in their 60’s do you know that can match beats? That love house music and disco? Whose record collection puts yours to shame? (The man will only handle his records while wearing latex gloves, for Christ’s sake. To put things in perspective, my dad was a big fan of Ottmar Liebart, the smooth jazz guitarist.) Well, until we met Bill Beecher Sr., we didn’t know anyone like that either. But he exists, and he happens to be the father of our good friend and equally awesome house jock Marshall Beecher (he'd better be awesome with a dad like that!). Bill Sr’s record collection is absolutely legendary amongst Milwaukee disc jockeys (where he resides), and every once in a while he can be coaxed in to coming out and sharing some of his incredible collection with the masses. Even more rarely, he plays alongside his son Marshall, making for one of the coolest and most musically phenomenal sets you could imagine. So when they agreed to come out for Sizzled, you can imagine how excited we were! Prepare yourself for something really special, and of course it’s FREE all night! Oh yea, and the date is NOT a typo. We are doing the first Friday JUST in February this month to accommodate a special event at Lava on our normal night. Oh, and I've gone ahead a posted a recording of Marshall + Bill Sr. playing together at the Highbury in Milwaukee too, grab the set and get a little taste of what you're in store for next month.

The Sizzled Concept
A Chicago Underground House Music Night held every SECOND FRIDAY of the month at Lava Chicago (1270 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago, IL) and hosted by John Mork of The Sound Republic + SpatulaCity Records and Karl Almaria of Bunchlox Music. The night is the logical evolution from Grizzled's "new-school/jackin house-only" musical format to a more eclectic, uncompromising, inclusive, and exciting "anything-goes-as-long-as-it's-good" format that seeks to focus on the extremely wide range of sounds and possibilities that all fall under House Music's wide umbrella. In an effort to remind ourselves and everyone else that this music and these parties are at the core ALL ABOUT FUN, we think now is the perfect time to get back to focusing on WHAT is getting played, not necessarily who's playing it. And of course, it's FREE (NO COVER) ALL NIGHT, just as Grizzled was in its inception. So there it is... let's get Sizzled!

Current mood:  blessed
Category: Life
Hey y'all, in response to the comments and messages people have been sending all basically asking "Wha haaaappun?" regarding The Sound Republic, I figured I'd put this up here so folks know the deal. Basically, Frankie and I are calling it quits as TSR as of now. It's not to say we won't ever work together again, but for the time being we are both pursuing solo efforts. Frankie's first solo EP (The Right SIde Up EP) is about to drop on our label SpatulaCIty (which is not going anywhere - that's the next site I need to update!), and I'm working on my own solo tunes right now, which should be dropping in the next few weeks. Anyway, sometimes folks just need to spread their wings and do their own thing and all that kind of creative freedom-type jazz. So yea, that's what's up! If you have any more questions, just drop me a message! Peace!

contribute-full

Well, sort of. If by "hiring" you mean "looking for dedicated heads with opinions to contribute to the site for fun/free", then you've hit the nail on the head. When we started this site, the original concept was to have it be a sort of one-stop shop for info on the night, a place to download mixes, and for people to read some of our ramblings. But we're thinking a little bigger now, and one of the things I've always appreciated about the underground/DIY aesthetic of this music is that it's totally fooking inclusionary. So rather than talking at everyone with this resource, I thought it would be cool to give people who have something to say a forum in which to say it.

That being said, we will be adding a Music Reviews + Charts section, as well as different themes and topics of conversation to weigh in on. And obviously, the real point of bringing in additional contributers is to let folks discuss, observe, and express their opinions freely. Of course there's a screening process with all of this, and there are standards involved. Clearly if you are interested in contributing to the site, you should be a mostly-literate house music person whose main goal is being heard, making insightful and interesting observations, and ultimately putting something back in to this tiny + fragile music that we all know and love. What we do not want is the same-old same-old pissing, moaning, bitching, hating, cockblocking internet ugliness that can permeate house music message boards (and frankly, message boards in general). This is NOT a messageboard... think of it as a magazine for all of us.

So! We want to hear what you have to say, what you think, and why you'd like to be a contributer to this fledgling thing we're building here. We're looking forward to hearing from folks on this. Drop a line at contribute@sizzledchicago.com and we'll get right back with you! It's a brand new year, so let's get busy having fun!

Check out the press release here for Inland Knights' 10-Year Anniversary triple disc 'From Dust Till Dawn - 10 Years of Drop Music' coming this October. Disc 1 is a plate of remastered favorites from Drop Music's back catalog, Disc 2 features a gang of awesome brand new UNMIXED tunes from a host of fantastic names in house music including Crazy Penis, Miguel Migs, Johnny Fiasco, Joshua Heath, The Sound Republic ('It Ain't Hot'), and of course Inland Knights themselves. And Disc 3 features the tracks from Disc 1 & 2 mixed by the Knights themselves.

I think it's a pretty brilliant and innovative idea to put out a licensed mix full of brand-new tracks that are exclusive to the label. As far as I've seen, nobody has ever done this in the lil' world of underground house music, but it is a damned good idea and we are incredibly excited to be a part of it. Track list goes a little something like this, and make sure to pick up a copy in your format of choice (Vinyl preferably!), and enjoy!

If you knew him, I'm sorry to say he's passed in a most untimely manner. He was a good friend to both Frankie and I, and he will be sorely missed. If you knew him, you know what an energetic and fun person he was and that he was always true to the Chicago music scene. That being said, visitation services are being held at Bohemian Cemetary (5255 N Pulaski @ Foster in Chicago) this Friday, August 22nd from 1-5pm. If you were friends, please try to make your way there at some point to pay respects and condolences to his fam. Ours go out to him in a big way. Gone but not forgotten, little buddy!

Yo duderinos! WestFest and the afterparty at Lava Chicago were both off the gosh darned chain! Lava's resident photographer and Chicago drum n' bass legend, the one like Doctor Groo (more affectionately known as Ben Baez to us regular folk) took an assload of awesome pics from both days, and the great folks from IllMeasures (who provided the killer sound and the badass of Striz on the decks) managed to snag some really dope recordings of the festivities! That being said, they're being hosted at the IllMeasures site, and I went ahead and put 'em up here just in case too. So go ahead and peruse Ben's dope pics while you peep some sets that will hopefully put you right in the moment. Here's to another great year of the music we love in the streets of our neighborhood!
