Hey- I recently started a new project with some friends called Subways on the Sun, and we've posted our first finished song online at myspace.com/subwaysonthesun. We're really excited about it, and will be posting more music and starting to play live after the new year! Also - the song is for sale on the 2009 Abrazos Breast Cancer Benefit Compilation. 100% of the profits benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. It's available on iTunes now! Add us as a friend, and support the cause! Holiday Cheers, Erick FAIR

"Open your letterbox each day to catch a glimpse of me... Someone who's trying just to breathe..."
So somehow we did it. Two years later almost. We wrapped up recording and actually have an album. I probably should have mentioned that a couple weeks ago when it happened but I think the excitement of the last few days of recording and finishing things just made me forget about the blog for a minute.
I'm listening to one of the songs right now called "Anymore" (or at least titled that for now)... just a rough mix, but enough to get by on for now. Piano, piano, piano, and some of the best vocals I've ever heard Aaron sing. Some of the best lyrics he's written...
Anyway - you'll be hearing more from us as we find out about release dates, tracklistings, album titles, new web sites, and other hob nobbery!!
Three plugs and then I'm outta here:
- Nick and I went out to see a band called Monarch last night and everyone who reads this should check them out! -- http://www.myspace.com/brennanstrawn
- Aaron is currently recording/producing Poema and they are not only super nice people but their music is awwwwwseome. -- http://www.myspace.com/poemamyspace
- Some of us are going to see Jenny Vick play tomorrow night in Bothell, WA at Lyon's Den coffee. She's great too. -- http://www.myspace.com/jennyvickmusic
Good night and Good Luck,
love love love.

Each day brings a new rough mix or two as the songs get finished. It's
always difficult to say "ok, this song is DONE" because you always want
to push yourself a little more and not settle. We're trying things we
haven't done before on this record for sure, and even though you can't
force inspiration we're always hoping to get one last cool thing on a
song before we put it to bed. You can tell when something isn't done
but you can't always tell what needs to be added or subtracted... And
you can't have egos. For example, I spent a chunk of time the other
night adding a bunch of lap steel guitar to a song... We thought we
liked it, but then started adding other stuff to the song and it didn't
make sense for it to be there anymore... The song all of sudden took
this new, better direction and inspiration and spontaneity took over...
It's funny because ultimately we DID need lap steel on it but Aaron
played this different part that just worked better. It was cool to see
an instrument being added as an idea, then subtracted, and then added
back in in a whole new way... For me that's why recording never ever
gets old. Why creativity is always something that makes me feel alive.
And why collaboration with other people you love and respect puts a
delectable and rewarding icing on the cake. I sort of can't believe I
just wrote that sentence (ha!) but I'm leaving it anyway. After we
finish recording I'm going to keep things rolling and finish writing
for a side project I'm starting up with some people. I want my brain
and heart to stay in this creative space for as long as possible.
I'm about to leave for the airport to pick up Joey and then the 4 of us
will get to actually be in the same room working on this record for the
first time in a year. He's got drums left on one song and I think it's
one of the best songs on the record. It was a song Aaron wrote for
something else while he was training an engineer producer, totally not
intended for Fair. But it turns out it just has to be a Fair song. An
afterthought, written 2 years after the other songs. But it brings
something fresh and exciting, and we can't let it go. Looks like Joey
brought the rain back with him to Seattle... It's a perfect day for
rain.
xoxo

Every song means SOMETHING when it is written, but not every song has a ton of meaning. The lyrics we're writing on this album mean a lot to us. I feel like I've been harping on this a lot but it's true... Aaron is writing lyrics and tracking vocals right now in the other room at the studio and it's been moving to hear what he comes up with on each song. The lyrics of mine that we used on this record mean a lot to me as well, and collectively each song has something all 4 of us can really relate to and play with passion. It's just about singing what we think sounds cool anymore. It's about meaning... Life is too short to settle sometimes.
Rough mixes are coming together bit by bit and we're sharing new songs with Tooth and Nail and some friends and family as they are completed. So far everyone is just as excited as we are and that's encouraging... And someday you'll all get to share this music with us as well.
Talks of release dates, maybe some tours, and all that stuff are starting to happen and we hope that we can see some of you out there at some point. Thanks for being a part of Fair with us. So often it feels like a big family.
xoxo

Man we've gotten a lot done in two days... Aaron finished lyrics and vocals for two songs and we completely changed the vibe one of the tracks and now it is one of my favorites. That's what makes collaboration so much fun in music... taking an idea and seeing where it goes. I remember when I wrote the basic song a couple years ago, and we had sort of kept it the way it was but something was missing. Between all of us we got a wild hair and just took it in a completely different direction. Problem solved, and good times had by all. I'm a pretty sappy person, so I don't have a problem saying how much I love making music with Aaron, Nick, and Joey. Things come together in a very organic way and we have so much fun doing it. I'm so excited for the mixes to be done and have all of you hear some of the new songs. We are getting artwork ideas from Ryan Clark pretty soon and are doing our photos next week as well. This is where it starts to get really fun... I am blown away by people that do visual artwork. I guess it's not much different than making music but since I don't do it I just have this insane respect and reverence for it. Anyway... We're stoked to see what he comes up with and of course share it with you. We'll see what happens today and where the song we pick to work on takes us... xoxo Erick

We got back into the studio today to finish the new record... the next couple weeks will consist of putting the finishing touches on the songs, finalizing the tracklisting, writing lots of lyrics, and just hearing things come together...
Today we spent a lot of time going through all of the material because it has been months since we were last here. Hearing things for the first time in a while made everything sound new again, and we are so excited about these songs. It's going to be a lot different than the first album... even moreso than we thought. We've said it before but each of these songs really mean a lot to us. We're being intentional about what we're saying, what we're playing... and at least for us we are developing relationships with these songs like we haven't experienced in the past...
More tomorrow....
xoxo

Current mood:Informative!

So we've been getting a lot of email and messages and what not about when we are finishing our new album. We've said 100 different things about when it will be done, so we understand the confusion. So here is the official word on where are currently at with the record:
- We started recording in Dec 2007 and had a great batch of 25 or so songs to pull from - We chose 12 to 14 to record and made significant headway during Dec 2007 and then again in a few different chunks of 2008 - At multiple points we thought we were going to finish, but because of scheduling conflicts or other reasons, our lives, jobs, etc... didn't allow us to finish during 2008 as we'd hoped. - The latest you've heard is that August 2009 is the projected release date for the album... BUT! That will no longer be the case. We are more than likely looking at a late 2009 release, but can't make any promises.
...The thing to know is that we are working as hard as we possibly can to get this done. But, we are perfectionists and aren't going to turn in an album to our label that we are not 100% satisfied with. We are about 90% done - so we're close! But this last 10% is the most important to "get right."
...The most important thing to know is that we are beyond excited about these songs. We think you're going to love this as much as we do. We've tried lots of new things, kept some of the old Fair formula, and come up with a record we know we will be very proud of.
We are still blown away by how many of you still listen to The Best Worst-Case Scenario so frequently. It's been encouraging to know that it's at least stood the test of time for 3 years :-), and that you all still enjoy it.
I know this was wordy... But you are all such loyal fans that we figured we owed you a solid update on where we were at with recording. Keep in touch as always and we'll talk soon!
Cheers,
Erick FAIR
