Every year I come to write a Christmas message on the website and every year I wonder where the time has gone.
Once again, from the first gig of the year at The Rock, Maltby to the final appearance of 2009 on BBC Radio Sheffield yesterday with Rony Robinson, I can say I've had another great year travelling around meeting new people and making new friends. That's the beauty of the job; you never know who you'll meet or what you'll do on the way.
Early in the year I attended and played at a memorial for friend and performer, Chris Rockcliffe, who lost his battle with prostate cancer back in 2008. It was a well attended event, helping raise awareness of the disease and a fitting tribute to a man who did so much for live music and on a personal level gave me much support in my work. A year has nearly passed by since that night, yet his enthusiasm and passion is not and could never be forgotten.
People say you should never meet your heroes... and for some people that may be good advice. Having said that, nothing can beat the feeling when your heroes turn out to be as great as you'd always believed they were. That was the case when I fulfilled an ambition since childhood and supported, Dougie MacLean. With initial shock aside, I found him a wonderfully down to earth and thoroughly pleasant gentleman, with a keen interest in motor homes and gadgets (bonus)! Nothing can quite beat the surreal experience of taking him on a tour of my motor home before the gig and discovering he'd always wanted one, but had to persuade his wife first!
So here it is in black and white. Dougie, you can borrow my motor home any time!
Once again, my local BBC radio station in Sheffield has been so supportive of my work both musically and journalistically. I've been talking about everything from music, politics, and entertainment to social issues and religious debates with vicars live on air. Thank you to Rony Robinson, Jimmy Carol, Raw Talent and the production teams behind the scenes who've kept my voice and music being heard through your station.
My music night at The Venue in Stocksbridge, flourished into a regular folk club in September this year called the 'Last Friday Folk Club', which thanks to staff, customers and musicians has grown into a very enjoyable and successful event. We gained recognition as Fatea.co.uk's October 2009 Club of the Month and we hope you'll keeping coming to support us in the New Year. Our first event of 2010 is on 29th January with special guest, Paul Bell. Whilst my journalistic writing came to an end with the closure of roots/ acoustic based website Folking.com, I started to branch out and revisit doing photography. Whilst photographing parts of my hometown Sheffield I got involved with a historical group on Facebook who asked me if I'd contribute some of my work to their photography exhibition opening in the Castle Market Art Space in January 2010. I was delighted to accept and plans are firmly underway with a fundraising gig on 8th January at the Harlequin pub in Sheffield. Full details of the gig are here.
I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. See you in 2010!

As ever the summer months have proved to be great for festivals and travelling around the country. In July, Charlie went back to The Tap in Hull for their weekly acoustic music night and once again the local people and performers gave Charlie a very warm welcome back.
August has been the month for the festivals. First of all a trip back to Bakewell where their 11th Arts Festival was underway. Charlie played to a lively crowd in the festival tent and shared a bill with amazing, Ukulele duo, The Re-Entrants. It was also the month Charlie supported the RSPB charity and played at the Old Moor Reserve’s ‘Voice’s For Nature’ festival with Kellie While, Carrie Elkin & Robbie Hecht, Ray Hearne and WWW.Combo. Everyone managed to raise £650.00 for the RSPB reserve in Barnsley. Well done to Marie and Julia for putting on such an enjoyable and successful first event.
Whilst Charlie was on her travels this month taking a well earned break down south, she just so happened to bump into actor and comedian Alexander Armstrong of comedy duo Armstrong & Miller filming a documentary at Wookey Hole in Somerset, pictured in the gallery here on MySpace.
Musicians and fans of The Venue’s Open Mic night will be pleased to hear that the August gathering will be going ahead on the last Friday (28th Aug), starting from 8.30pm. As ever listeners are just as welcome as performers. Be sure to bring your weapon of choice and either plug in or mic up on the night.
On an even better note you’ll be pleased to know that The Venue have been listening to your suggestions about the future progression of the open mic, after all it is your night.
From 25th September (the last Friday of the month) we’re launching the night as the Last Friday Folk Club… we were up all night dreaming up that one! The Venue have now committed to a full year of folk club events, always on the last Friday where you take to stage along with a set from our invited guest.
The folk club will still remain in the Samuel Fox Suite at The Venue and there will be some very significant changes and modifications to suit the needs of a regular musical event hosted in that room.
We’d love to see you at the launch party on 25th September. More details will follow in the coming month and at the 28th Aug Open Mic night. Look forward to seeing you there!

As month's go June has been a pretty good one. Charlie was very pleased to have the opportunity to support two legendary folk/ singer songwriters, Dick Gaughan and Dougie MacLean at The Venue, Stocksbridge (pictured in the MySpace photo gallery). Dougie has always been a hero of Charlie's since she was young, seeing him first on the Transatlantic Sessions with Kathy Mattea and learning to play their music. We had a great time at two new festivals both on the same day: Manor Folk Moot in Coalville and Worral Folk & Ale Festival in Sheffield. Down in Coalville our friends Greenman Rising, Chloe Merriot and Sam Sweeney (who played on Charlie's album 'Sleeping at the Station'), were also on the bill. Back up in hometown Sheffield, there was an appreciative crowd who came to see Charlie along with other acts Paul Pearson, Treebeard, Lou Marriot and Berkana. Everyone was in true festival spirit and the weather was perfect making a very enjoyable first festival for both events. Thanks go out to our special guests at The Venue Open Mic for May and June. We were joined firstly by Rotherham's Andrew Morley and then Pete Thornton-Smith. Our next open mic will be on Friday 31st July with an 8.30pm start. As ever under 16s are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For more information contact: The Partnership Media on 0114 2361040 or thepartnership@charliebarkermusic.com. There's a few additions to Charlie's online sites to mention. If you've not read Charlie's published journalistic work and photography then get yourself along to http://charliebarkerjourno.wordpress.com. There is a range of work on there from Charlie's work at SHU Print newspaper, Folking.com and various radio work and appearances on the BBC. Feel free to leave any comments too! There is a new addition to the downloads on the ' Journalism' page. You can now take a listen to Charlie's comments on the sudden death of pop icon, Michael Jackson here. And finally, if you're into 'tweeting' or are wondering what on earth we're on about then take a look at Charlie's Twitter page http://twitter.com/charliebarker and all will be revealed. Fans of the site include Stephen Fry, Philip Scofield, Demi Moore and Kevin Spacey. One warning though... it can be addictive!

Back in March, Charlie was asked to be part of the judging panel for the Young Acoustic Roots competition 2009. After much deliberation Charlie and the rest of the judging panel including Gary Wells (Wath Festival) and Alan James (RootBeat Records) gave the prize to duo Ciaron Algar and Lizzie Campbell. Here's Charlie pictured with Ciaron and Lizzy on stage at the Phoenix Theatre. Make sure you keep an eye out for them at festivals around the country this summer.
We're also pleased to announce that Charlie has now joined Wath Festival committee to help organise the coming 2010 event. Wath Festival has been very good in supporting Charlie's music for many years and she is happy to join the team in what is a great opportunity to give something back to the local music scene.
Charlie has continued to keep her face (and voice) seen and heard in the Yorkshire/ Derbyshire region with help from BBC Radio Sheffield. You will have heard Charlie discussing everything from politics, religion, society, sex education to the lighter entertainment topics on both Jimmy Carol's and Rony Robinson's shows.
Finally, supporters of The Venue Open Mic will be pleased to know that more dates are coming this summer on 22nd May, 26th June and 31st July. As usual make sure you arrive early at 8.30pm with under 16s accompanied by a responsible adult. Charlie is also supporting two fine folk artists this summer at The Venue: Dick Gaughan on 29th May and Dougie MacLean on 12th June.

February has seen Charlie gigging in one of her favourite places, Buxton, around Sheffield and making another radio appearance. Charlie went to Buxton to play a concert in memory of her friend and musician Chris Rockcliffe who sadly died after a battle with cancer in the summer of 2008. She joined some fantasic musicians including Breeze & Wilson and the members of Club Acoustic to raise money for the Blyth House Hospice.
Charlie's open mic night at The Venue, Stocksbridge was the busiest we've ever seen. Nevertheless the quality of performers was outstanding as ever and we all had a really great night. The next open mic there will be held on the 27th March. Be sure to turn up at 8.30pm and get your name down on the list to perform or alternatively contact The Partnership and let us know you're coming in advance.
You may remember Charlie took part in the Young Acoustic Roots Competition back in 2005, she came in 2nd place out of 5 finalists chosen to perform. This year the competition takes place at the Phoenix Theatre in Bawtry and Charlie has been asked to join the judging panel, to decide which of the finalists this year will go on to take the prize of several folk festival performances. Although she is a bit old at 23 to perform in such competitions, Charlie is thrilled to be able to take part and help send another young performer on their way to a great start in the folk world. Tickets for the event are still available, click here to find out more about the event.

Hi everyone! What a year it has been. After taking a short break at the end of December 2007 till the February 2008, it was straight back to business from then onwards. I've had some great opportunities this year and met some wonderful people along the way. In April I was given the chance of supporting Smokie and playing to a crowd of 1,600 people in the Metrodome Arena. The band, management, promoters and of course all the Smokie fans, were so kind and I would like to thank everyone who made that possible.
In the summer I was invited back to play Henley Festival for a second year running in La Scala Restaurant and once again we had a fun week taking in the various attractions at the festival. We didn't have the best of weather but that didn't matter, we started a new trend of wearing evening gowns and wellies instead!
Along the way I got to meet some fantastic, talented people; actor Ricky Tomlinson, soul legend Alexander O'Neal and comedian Richard Morton. One particular highlight for me was getting to interview one of my heroes, Richard Hawley, when I covered the opening of the Sheffield Carling Academy for BBC Radio Sheffield. Ok, it was more than just a highlight... I was over the moon!
The local BBC radio team has been so good to me this year. Whether it's been a music item, a talk show or something completely off the wall, it has been lots of fun taking part and I am very grateful for your time.
Thanks to everyone who made it to a gig this year. We're booking new dates all the time and I'm really looking forward to what 2009 holds. I'll be supporting another hero of mine, Dougie Maclean, on his 2009 UK tour date in Sheffield and I can't wait.
I suppose all that is left to say is... Happy Christmas and here's to 2009!

Charlie came back to the Henley Festival this month, for a second year in a row, playing in Albert Roux's restaurant, La Scala. It was good to see some familiar faces from the previous year as Charlie entertained the diners every night at the festival.
As the clouds appeared and the heaven's opened on the the first night, everybody got their wellies out with their suits and posh frocks, though it didn't dampen the atmosphere. The show must go on as they say. Fortunately the weather improved for the rest of the week and with a whole host of acts from musicians to street performers, orchestras to comedians 2008's festival was a huge success.
There's plenty of gigs coming up for August, including the return of The Venue Open Mic at Stocksbridge. Make sure you get intouch on thepartnership@charliebarkermusic.com if you would like to perform and under 16's are welcome to join the open mic for the first half hour accompanied by a responsible adult. You can see all the latest gig dates here.
Charlie is once again joining BBC Radio Sheffield's Rony Robinson on his Sunday Forum on 3rd August from 10am. It's an interactive talk show where listeners are encouraged to ask the panel questions on any of the topics featured. Make sure you tune in on 88.6 FM, on DAB digital radio and online at www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/radio_sheffield.
