Redding Ink 2009 postponed…but don’t sweat it!

I expect to re-ignite it again for next year (2010). It was very difficult for me to come to that decision. Especially since last year's went so well! It has really been dialed-in and the formula has been fine-tuned. I plan on keeping it the perfect size and making it more of an invite-only with our most beloved tattoo shops becoming an important part of it. Those shops have helped make this a family-oriented convention. I’m talking about all the local shops from Redding, Eureka and Chico. Long-time attendees like Fallen Angel out of Citrus Heights, Metamorphic and Cruz Creations from San Jose, Black Rabbit out of Bend, Oregon, Kustom Kuts and Blue Lotus out of San Rafael and High Priestess from Eugene, Oregon. Newcomers like DV8 and Blue Star out of Concord and Accents from Ukiah have quickly become members of this new-found Nor-Cal family. Let’s not also forget Miz Beth and Jon The Machine, Uzi, and others who call California their home.

The Redding Ink Tattoo Convention has evolved and is an an electrifying event. Nothing can compare to the extraordinary relationship between all the attending vendors and their Nor-Cal tattoo enthusiasts. Understand that this was a very difficult decision as we all have put a tremendous amount of effort into it. Those of you who have been around the last few years and have seen how much better it is getting can agree that it is becoming a very important and outstanding weekend in our lives. I don’t feel too awful about not doing it this year. That’s probably because I know how incredible it will be next time!

Huge thanks to those of you who want to donate their time and efforts to help me with this. Your devotion is noted and your sincere enthusiasm very much appreciated. Y’all know who you are.

In the meantime, keep in touch. You know how to get a hold of me.

Thanks,
Billy York

4th Annual Redding Ink Tattoo Convention

September 19, 20, 21

The 4th Annual Redding ink Tattoo and Piercing Convention, held on the weekend of September 19-21, met and exceeded all expectations. Nestled in the heart of Hella Far Nor California, Redding played host to what has now become a great big party of a weekend. "This was only my 3rd year doing this," said event promoter Billy York. "And last year was our first year in the convention center. Much was learned and the necessary changes were made." The layout to the Convention Center was radically altered from last year and local marketing efforts produced a dramatic improvement for everybody involved. "I made it a goal that all vendors and artists leave happy. And I can honestly say each one left very happy and wanting to return next year."

Many tattoo contest awards spread out over each day were up for grabs. Wonderful artwork was produced and photos can be seen in these pages and on reddingink.com, which has a list of all attending vendors. The Art Fusion projects once again made everybody happy as people appreciated the original artwork created in front of their eyes. 4 artists rotate to 4 different canvases and are given about an hour to create 4 original pieces. The pieces were auctioned off to raise donations for local charities that benefited tremendously.

On Saturday, reggae band Dubwize cruised through a couple sets as they performed for Redding Ink for the 2nd year in a row. Legendary punk rock band, Channel 3 had everybody cheering for more. Redding Ink typically holds its suspension performances on Sunday and on this particular year, hundreds flocked to see what was arguably the most dramatic performance to be viewed by the general public. For the first time ever, Constructs of Ritual Evolution (CoRE) was enlisted to put on a show. And put on a show they did. Utilizing the entire convention center, their finale ended with a howling applause.

Tebori hand-tattooing by Horisuzu and scarification by Kustom Cuts returned again this year to complement the tattooing. Quality piercings were performed by Pat Tidwell. Many of the attending artists are known on an international level. Belly Dancers were playing with fire and dj's spun the most appropriate tuneage.  The after-parties were, as the kids say, off the hook. Redding Ink has proven it is going to get better every year.

Channel 3 is playing at the 2008 Redding Ink Tattoo Convention! They will perform on the evening of Saturday, September 20th. There is no extra charge to see them. All you need to do is purchase your ticket to the convention. For more info, check out reddingink.com. Yee-haw!

Here is their official story:

Channel 3
, also known as CH3, is a punk rock band from Cerritos, California. Part of the Southern California punk scene of the early 1980s, the band had a sound that was more melodic than many of their hardcore contemporaries, and lyrics which ranged from thoughtful and satirical to bratty and self-indulgent. Songs like "You Make Me Feel Cheap" and "Separate Peace" were among the many sampled on punk compilations of the period, and the band's albums were modestly successful in both the U.S. and Europe.

Channel 3 centered around the friendship of Mike Magrann (vocals, guitar) and Kimm Gardner(guitar), which dated back to the second grade. Forming in 1980, the foursome included Larry Kelley (bass) and Mike Burton (drums, later replaced by Jack DeBaun). They released an EP, Channel 3, in the summer of 1981 and began playing shows in the Los Angeles area. In the summer of 1982, their first album Fear of Life was released, and the band began their first US tour.

After 1983 the band experimented with other styles, alienating many of its original fans. Eventually it returned to its roots, touring Europe in the 1990s and releasing a more punk-oriented CD in 2002.
